Examensarbete är utfört på GKN Aerospace Applied Composites (ACAB) där produktionsflödet för fyra produkter har kartlagts. Idag upplever företaget svårigheter med att hålla leveranstiden för dessa produkter, dessutom upplevs verkstäderna som ostrukturerade. GKN Aerospace Applied Composites tillverkar idag flertalet produkter i komposit till både den civila och militära marknaden. För detta examensarbete har flödet av tre stycken radomer och en storlek av tryckkärl kartlagts. Tryckkärl är en produkt som tillverkas i större volymer och har ett flödesorganiserat produktionsupplägg. Radomerna är kundorderspecifika produkter som endast tillverkas i enstyck eller mindre volymer. Detta innebär att radomverkstaden är funktionellt organiserad. Med ett varierande och växande produktsortiment ökar kraven på produktionsplaneringen och hantera kombinationen av de två olika produktionsuppläggen. För att kunna ta fram förbättringsförslag för framtiden har en analys genomförts av produktionen. Förbättringsförslagen resulterar i studiens rekommendationer och förbättringsplan till ACAB. Den metod som använts är Value Stream Mapping (VSM), som är en metod i Lean filosofin. Denna metod används för att eliminera alla former av slöseri genom att identifiera värdeskapande och icke värdeskapande tid. För att sammanställa en VSM för respektive produkt genomfördes en datainsamling som bestod av intervjuer, observationer och uppmätningar av flödenas avstånd. För varje produkt identifierades problemområden med tillhörande förbättringsförslag, dessa förslag på åtgärder och rekommendationer resulterade i ett framtida alternativt flöde för produktionen. Historisk data har analyserats av genomloppstider, en medeltid för varje process har beräknats ur äldre order för respektive produkt. Som en riktlinje för dagens produktion har ACAB idag standardtider som de planerar leveransdatum efter. Beräknade medeltider har satts i förhållande till standardtiderna för att kunna urskilja vilka processtider som överstiger eller understiger dagens riktlinjer. I de alternativa flödena presenteras åtgärdsförslag för att kunna förbättra verkstädernas layout genom att förkorta de uppmätta avstånden. Utöver jämförelse av tider och avstånd presenteras övergripande åtgärder som 5S och kontinuerlig utbildning av personal. Generellt för båda produktionerna har jämförelsen mellan medeltider och standardtider visat att standardtiderna behöver korrigeras. Korrigeringen av tider medför inte kortare genomloppstider utan bidrar till en bättre planering av leveransdatum. Däremot förväntas de förändringar av layout och organisering som föreslagits för respektive verkstad reducera genomloppstiderna.

The modern interaction we have with the natural environment surrounding our cities is often limited to designated areas that usually contain manicured trails. When information is very limited or absent we often avoid exploring such areas and instead opt for others both familiar and easily accessible. Mapping as a means to engage a community is a method that encourages exploration and discovery. Often there are hidden treasures of our communities’ backyards that have nearly been lost to time and memory. This practicum is an attempt to reconnect and engage residents and visitors of Thunder Bay, Ontario, with the historically significant Kaministiquia River. It focuses on the Kaministiquia from Kakabeka Falls to Lake Superior. By providing the public with information on the river’s attractions and how to access the river, it is hoped that families and individuals will utilitize the information to get outside and explore their surrounding environment.

QTL mapping, gene identification and genetic manipulation of glucosinolates in Brassica rapa L.

Glucosinolates are amino acid derived secondary metabolites found in the order Capparales. It is an important class of phytochemicals involved in plant-microbe, plant-insect, plant-animal and plant-human interactions. It is, therefore, important to understand genetic mechanism of glucosinolate biosynthesis in Brassica for efficient manipulation. In this study, QTL mapping of leaf and seed glucosinolates was performed in B. rapa using two RIL populations, SR-RILs and BU-RILs. QTL mapping was performed using SR-RILs developed from a cross of Chinese cabbage and turnip rapeseed and a genetic map in B.rapa. Genetic map was developed using a total 1,579 molecular markers including 9 markers specific to glucosinolate genes, GSL-ELONG, GSL-PRO, GSL-FMOOX1, and GSL-AOP/ALK. Several QTL for progoitrin, gluconapin, glucoalyssin, glucobrassicanapin, 2-methylpropyl and 4-hydoxyglucobrassicin glucosinolates were identified with phenotype variance between 6 and 54%. Interestingly, a major QTL for 5C aliphatic glucosinolates was co-localized with a candidate Br-GSL-ELONG locus on linkage group A3, displayed co-segregation with co-dominant SCAR marker BrMAM1-1. The Br-GSL-ELONG locus was identified to regulate 20 µmole/g seed 5C glucosinolate biosynthesis. BU-RILs derived from a cross of yellow sarson and USU9 was segregated for glucoerucin, gluconapin and progoitrin 4C aliphatic glucosinolates with 4-hydoxyglucobrassicin. Phenotyping was performed in controlled and field environments for seed glucosinolates and controlled environments for leaf glucosinolates. Genetic map was developed using SRAP markers and glucosinolate gene, GSL-ELONG and GSL-PRO specific 4 loci were integrated on map. Four and three QTL were identified for seed glucoerucin and gluconapin, respectively in both environments with phenotypic variance up to 49%. Additionally, genetic manipulation of glucosinolates was performed by backcross with MAS in B. rapa. Resynthesized B. napus line was backcrossed with B. rapa genotypes, RI16, BAR6 and USU9 for replacement or introgression of glucosinolate genes, GSL-ELONG- and GSL-PRO+. In RI16 genotype, 15 to 25 µmole/g seed 5C glucosinolates reduced in 15 BC3F2 lines those were positive with GSL-ELONG- marker and negative with the A-genome and gene specific marker BrMAM1-1. This suggests that the functional allele has replaced by non-functional from B. oleracea. GSL-PRO+ positive backcross lines in RI16 genotype displayed sinigrin 3C aliphatic glucosinolate in B. rapa. This suggests introgression of GSL-PRO+ in B. rapa.

Charting a new course: collaborative environmental health mapping with the Isga Nation in Alberta, Canada

Many Indigenous communities around the world are facing a health crisis aggravated by environmental degradation and dispossession. Through community-based participatory research, we examined barriers to land use, declining environmental health and human health implications for the Isga People in west-central Alberta, Canada. Through interviews, land use-and-occupancy and traditional and local knowledge of environmental change was spatially documented. Key concerns including declining wildlife health and water quality were largely attributed to the petroleum and forestry industries. Barriers included the encroachment of industry, agriculture and urban development, and a legacy of state-imposed assimilation policies. Human health concerns were associated with these barriers and environmental degradation along with a loss of connection to land and cultural practices. However, community resilience was also evident in the persistence of land use and cultural revival. Underlying environmental and sociopolitical factors are crucial for the health and wellbeing of the Isga and Indigenous Peoples worldwide.

The visualisation and rendering of digital elevation data

The thesis addresses a longstanding cartographic problem, of how to visualise the Earth's surface relief in an effective and meaningful way. The problem is narrowed to relief defined by digital elevation data and visualised as a static, orthographic representation. It is approached in three steps: firstly research focuses on determining the most useful form of graphical representation to be pursued; secondly the theoretical basis of computer visualisation is investigated through a three-model framework, prompting a number of directions where solutions might be developed; and thirdly the development and engineering of a system is reported which models and renders widely available elevation data, and which provides flexibility in its input variables. The developed system is then applied to specific cases of relief visualisation, and new graphical forms are developed. The investigation of past and current approaches to relief representation, and a review of computer-graphic rendering of simpler geometrically defined objects, have revealed some limitations in commonly used relief visualisation systems, but have established the simulation of light and shade as still the most promising line of development. Analysis of the component variables of surface visualisation and rendering has led to the visualisation paradigm of three parametric models - of elevation, illumination and reflectance. Some attractive qualities, including widespread availability, of the contour elevation model have been identified, and a system has been developed which reconstructs surfaces from this data structure in a more effective way than typical current approaches. The system is also designed to support more complex illumination and surface reflectance models than the somewhat simplistic scenarios commonly available. The thesis reports the application of the system to generate surfaces from contour data, and experimentation with multiple coloured light sources and varying degrees of surface specularity. Evaluation of system implementation, and of the qualities of a representative set of graphical products, is addressed through six design criteria within a context defined by a typical mapping application. This has led to conclusions that the system and the new graphical forms have a number of virtues, including close fidelity with the source data, and significant improvements in visualisation.

Mathematical analysis of novel magnetic recording heads

As a contribution to increasing the areal density of digital data stored on a magnetic recording medium, this thesis provides mathematical analyses of various magnetic recording heads. Each of the heads considered here is for use in a perpendicular recording system, writing to or reading from a multi-layer medium which includes a high magnetic permeability layer between the data storage layer and the substrate. The exact two-dimensional analysis is performed in each case by one of two methods: either Fourier analysis or conformal mapping. The types of heads analysed include conventional styles but particular emphasis is placed on the effects of the novel idea of potential grading across the pole pieces. Exact head fields are derived for thin film heads with both constant and linearly varying pole potentials, single pole heads with linearly and arbitrarily varying pole potentials and shielded magnetoresistive heads, all in the presence of a magnetic underlayer. These and other published solutions are used to derive output characteristics for perpendicular replay heads, which are compared with published theoretical and experimental results where possible. The Fourier solutions obtained are in the form of infinite series dependent on at least one set of coefficients which are determined by infinite systems of linear equations. Approximations to the potentials in the head face planes, independent of these coefficients, are derived from the exact Fourier solutions. The accuracy of these approximations is demonstrated when they are used to estimate the vertical field components and the spectral response functions. Heads with graded pole potentials are found to have more localised vertical field components than the corresponding constant potential heads. They are also better suited for use with thin media for 'in contact' recording.

Wayfinding in complex spaces

This thesis is primarily a theoretical examination of people environment relationships directed towards the performance requirements of buildings for human occupation. It commences with a review of extant behavioural models used in the fields of Life Fire Safety Engineering and Wayfinding. The review includes several other interconnected disciplines and areas of interest such as space syntax and cognitive science. Extant behavioural models are described as essentially mechanical however there is also another, less familiar and not yet fully understood, symbiotic model. The symbiotic model is expanded and a new form of spatial analysis, developmental syntax, presented. Symbiotic models seem capable of providing a theoretical base for both the mechanical and also more subtle and complex relationships between space, social interaction and personal knowledge. Case studies are included as tentative explorations of developmental syntax and the symbiotic model in use and recommendations are made for further research into both developmental syntax and the symbiotic model.
