O'Nils, Rebecka January 2015 (has links)

Interdependence, responsibility and partnership : a German perspective on the Northern Local Church in her international context

Schmidt, Jörg 05 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This thesis is an attempt to investigate how local churches (re)define their international orientation in response to the shockwaves of globalisation and their interpretation of the signs of the times. The analysis is guided by the key dimensions of interdependence, responsibility, and partnership. The local church is expected to have reached an increasing awareness of interdependence in her international relationships by the emergence of the postmodern systemic paradigm as never before in the history of the ecumenical movement. Consequently, this results in a sense of responsibility developing directly from a prophetic reading and an interpretation of the signs of the times as well as in a receptivity to be fertilised by international impulses. The local church is perceived by both individual Christians and pastors as direct platform for international responsibility. The wounds of the world, the needy and the suffering are suggested as inviting primary responses of local churches in the North. International church partnerships are investigated as practical attempts to live out interdependent relationships, to translate the sense of responsibility into action, and to receive fertilisation from the partner churches. Qualitative case studies from Reformed, United (Lutheran/Reformed) and Free churches present a status analysis of churches regarding the points under discussion. The tendency is observed that pastors inc~easingly look for ways alternative to the old ecumenical structures, which are characterised by rich/poor and donor/recipient relationships, thus operating their churches with free initiative and association. Studies regularly narrow down topics to interdependence, postmodernism, development, development politics, church development services, international partnerships, ecumenical learning, etc. Often recommendations for action are made based on the one single area of research presented. In this study, however, it is argued that pastors and churches do not derive their decisions and programmes from considerations of one single area, but they consider all these areas together. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. The citizen-officer ideal: a historical and literary inquiry

DeBuse, Mark R. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / Due to their unique expertise, military officers have always held a special position within Western society. Yet, while individuals who have demonstrated knowledge of warfare and prowess in battle have long been held in high regard by society and the members of their profession, it is those who have also demonstrated the ideals of citizenship and chivalry who serve as the icons for thoughtful military officers. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the citizen-officer ideal- through a close study of historical and literary case studies. By establishing a common theme or values among completely separate exemplars of this ideal, a continuum joining Odysseus, Cincinnatus, Beowulf, and Gawain to Washington, Chamberlain, and Marshall might eventually be carried forward to the present and the modern military officer. Specific focus is given to the roles that classical notions of citizenship and the Code of Chivalry have played in shaping the ethos of the American officer. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Of space, time, and the archives between: the life of Hugh A. Taylor and the redefinition of the archival cosmos

Buckwold, Jarad 13 September 2016 (has links)
While today, archival theory is permeated with postmodern ideas and philosophies, borrowing from fields as diverse as anthropology and computer science, even just a few decades ago, this was far from the case. This transition was pioneered and strongly influenced by the imaginative and thought-provoking essays of Hugh Taylor, a Canadian archivist who developed a worldview that positioned archives and archivists at centre stage. Taylor was able to do so as a result of his fascination with the works of the media theorist, Marshall McLuhan, whose ideas Taylor found directly applicable to archives and archival theory. This thesis examines the mental state of Hugh Taylor throughout his life and how this mental state shaped his revolutionary concepts, which delved into epistemology and metaphysics, placing archives at the centre of a universal network of connections. These concepts would go on to drastically change archival theory to what it is today. / October 2016

Marshallův plán a Velká Británie / Marshall plan and Great Britain

Paříková, Lenka January 2009 (has links)
This thesis deals with the influence of the Marshall Plan for Great Britain. The goal is to characterize the contribution of European Recovery Programme for the island state. It focuses on the development of the policy and the economy of Great Britain after the Second World War in 1945 - 1948. It reflects British-American relations during this period. It mentions the impact of the Marshall Plan from a global perspective, both economically and politically. It analyzes the economic assistance provided by Great Britain, individual negotiations about the size of assistance, the impact of the program, interim opinions of British government and directions for future development of London.

Elementos da teoria algébrica das formas quadráticas e de seus anéis graduados / Elements of the algebraic theory of quadratic forms and its graded rings

Santos, Duilio Ferreira 27 November 2015 (has links)
In this work I try to provide a self-contained presentation on the concepts of algebraic theory of quadratic forms and on the graded rings that have emerged in the development of this theory. I started trying to clarify the meaning of \"equivalence\"between the various meanings of the concept of quadratic form. After the presentation of geometrical ingredients and results, we make an extract of the theory of Witt rings, a concept that originated the modern algebraic theory of quadratic forms. It is provided the key elements for the formulation of cohomology theories, focusing on the development of profinite cohomology theory and, especially, on galoisian cohomology. Are described the functors K0, K1 and K2 of classical K-theory and also the Milnor K-theory, which is more appropriate to formulate questions about quadratic forms. The dissertation is finished with the presentation of some concepts of the Theory of Special Groups, a first-order encoding of algebraic theory of quadratic forms, and with an example its importance by providing an extract of proof by Dickmann-Miraglia of the Marshalls conjecture on signatures, which relies heavily on this theory.

Fostering a Dynamic and Stable Neighborhood for Europe

Aiginger, Karl, Handler, Heinz January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Europe is less dynamic than other areas in the world. The European Union will lose its position as the largest economic region, with the share in world output decreasing to less than 15% in 2050. This article designs a strategy based on which Europe can increase its internal dynamics, connect with its dynamic neighborhood and stabilize its eastern and southern regions. These regions are currently searching for development paths different from those in the US and China. The envisaged strategy learns from past errors, counteracts "my country first calls", balances uneven trade and investment pacts, and prevents land and resource grabbing. A new partnership strategy with neighbors in Eurasia, the Middle East and Africa will enable Europe to overcome its growth fatigue. It could help to reshape globalization and convert the current "ring of fire" into a "ring of friends". Then, together with its neighbors, Europe could still be an important economic region in 2050, on par with China and larger than the US plus its neighbors.

Oliveira, Felipe Souza Leão de January 2017 (has links)
Our objective in this work is to analyze the construction and the transformations of the idea of history of the American anthropologist Marshall Sahlins, between de decades of 1950 and 1980. We believe that this period is important because we can find in it the principles of a way of thinking about history that will continue to dominate Sahlins work in the following decades. In order to analyze his idea of history, as well as its transformations, we will interpret the theoretical principles that define it as such. We will argue that Sahlins will adopt two ideas of history during this period: one that will have the word "evolution" as its central theoretical principle and another where the words "culture" and "structure" will be its most important theoretical principles. These ideas of history will also be analyzed in the context of the society and the ideas that had a central role in Sahlins intellectual life. We will also defend that, in this context, the works of Leslie White and Claude Lévi-Strauss will have a great importance. And we hope, in this way, to give two contributions: one for the understanding of Sahlins idea of history; and another to the current debate about the relationship between History and Anthropology.

Typically, Marshall is mentioned in economic historiography only as the author of the so-called marginalist or neoclassic school. Since our aim in this paper is to give a broader visibility to this author, it appeared to us that the initial steps here should not be centered around the complex discussion that involves economic theories or the mathematical aspects of such discussions. As regards the latter, Marshall himself insisted in distributing them into appendices aimed at, as told by the author, rendering his work accessible to as many people as possible. Therefore, we decided to follow this author s intellectual path in order to out the contributions he gave to the definition of economic science from his major book, Principles of Economics, published in 1890. Marshall became the responsible for the institutionalization of a new science when he founded the School of Economics and Politics at Cambridge University, defining the role of both economics and economists. The scope of this research encompasses two principal lines: first, to approach Marshall s work from the conditions found in the Victorian age, between 1837 and 1901. In this sense, we looked for those elements which influenced the formation of the author, and which have been influenced by him. Then, we looked for the philosophic and scientific aspects of Marshall s ideas contained in his book Principles of Economics, in which he defines the extent of economic studies.
