In a relationship with cell phone": an ethnography of consumption practices of smartphones by women

Pereira, Camila Rodrigues 23 March 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation is an ethnographic study about smartphones consumption by low-income women from different age groups in the city of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Based on the ethnography, which I choose to use as a theoretical-methodological approach because of its qualitative and empirical character, with participant observation, interviews and duration of twelve months, I try to understand in this work which are and how the practices of smartphone consumption occur among women from the low-income groups from different districts of the city. I also try to investigate the social and cultural practices that are found in the relation between women and their smartphones, as well as verify if the cell phone brings possibilities of female empowerment. Understanding what women intend to communicate through the use of smartphones, which strategies they use, and to identify the relevance of mobile devices on a day-by-day basis and in the women surveyed lives are also part of the specific objectives of the work. Theoretically, this dissertation mainly addresses anthropological researches on cell phones and social media, studies on consumption and material culture and work on gender and technology. As research considerations it is possible to state that: smartphones have become everyday; there is a gender consumption of the devices, related to what is to be a woman, to motherhood, to sexuality, to love and to family relations; currently the smartphones move the jobs of the working women, mainly the autonomous ones; and these artifacts, through their various functionalities, enable low-income women to feel included in the digital world and to know new ways of sociability, communication and how to be a woman. Women are in a relationship with their cell phones.

Indians (classified in ethnology as belonging to J?-Timbira group) and the Museu Paulista of the Universidade de S?o Paulo, which we can classify as two distinct social fields. The understanding of the drama is conveyed through an examination of each of these fields and the coming together of both on the basis of the positions taken up, within the network of relationships established during the social process, by actors representing both the Krah? field and what we may call here the academic-administrative field. A multi-sited ethnographic approach is adopted, seeking the complexity of the drama and the positions in the aforementioned network, taking into consideration institutional political projects, personal projects and personal trajectories within a historical perspective. The aim is to encourage discussion of the relationship between the formation of the historical-scientific and ethnographic museums and the practices of the anthropological discipline, as well as the social role of these institutions and the processes of signification of objects belonging to the indigenous material culture / O presente trabalho prop?e a an?lise de uma situa??o de drama social envolvendo a etnia Krah? Beadwork and its impact on contemporary fashion in South Africa

Hamalwa, Beata January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012. / Judging from the market growth of African-style designs, including beadwork, it is clear that beadwork continues to recur in contemporary fashion, both locally and internationally. This thesis addresses the role traditional South African beadwork plays in contemporary fashion, in an attempt to determine its impact on fashion trends over time. It explores the history of beadwork in South Africa: its development from the pre-colonial era, under colonial rule, and during apartheid. The beadwork of the Ndebele, Zulu and Xhosa are looked at specifically, since beadwork forms a vibrant part of their cultures. The research examines the history of South African beads, as far back as 75 000 years ago, when beads were first made, used and traded. This research is underpinned by the way in which beads contribute to a cultural identity in society. The research considers how South Africa's colonial and apartheid past inhibited the development of beadwork in South African fashion. This thesis describes the process and dynamics of traditional beadwork in contemporary fashion; the way in which beadwork has been infused into fashion; and the reasons for these trends. It also investigates the way in which African designs, patterns, colours and techniques began to playa role in negotiating fashion designers' identities during the African renaissance and at present. This is a qualitative study that through in-depth interviews, analyses the relationship and balance between beadwork and fashion trends. Lastly, the research indicates whether South African fashion consciously affirms beadwork and beading techniques in contemporary fashion design.

Battezzati, Ligia Cristina 02 August 2013 (has links)
This work is a study on the use of vintage and retro styles in domestic arrangements, considering the decorative order, the relationship between fashion and interior design, the meanings attributed to artifacts, the construction and representation of identities. The research aims to understand the characteristics of the vintage and retro, explore their ways of appropriation and constitution as strategies for customizing home environments. Its main sources discourses were found in Casa Claudia and in Casa e Jardim magazines, specializing in decoration, published between 2002-2011. In the reports, both the texts and images are important features for understanding of the types of arrangements characterized as vintage, whose main property is the use of artifacts from the past, or as retro, classified as objects that take advantage of current technological resources, but that refer to the past. Through some articles published, I intend to discuss the importance of material culture as a resource for building models lifestyle. Although the discourse of magazines favors the understanding of vintage and retro as forms of customization and expression of individuality, I want to highlight their social and cultural nature, showing the set of rules governing their meanings and forms of use.

Para beneficiar la plata: labor, role, and status in a silver refinery during the First century of spanish imperialism in the town of Porco / Para beneficiar la plata: mano de obra, papel, y posición social en una refinería de plata durante el primer siglo del imperialismo español en el pueblo de Porco

Weaver, Brendan J. M. 10 April 2018 (has links)
Before the Spanish conquest, the town of Porco, in the Department of Potosí in modern-day Bolivia, was the site of one of the most important Inca mining projects. During the viceregal period it became the focus of the first Spanish silver mining operations of the in the Andes. This region offers an excellent opportunity for historical archeology to ask questions about the relationship between the states that organized such mining projects and the workers who exploited the ore. Such an undertaking grants us a better understanding of the dynamics that had a profound impact on the origins of the modern Andean economy. This article presents ethnohistorical and archaeological evidence in order to discuss the organization of colonial labor categories, and the development of the changing social roles and status of skilled workers associated with the south-central Andean mining industry. In doing so, I trace the regional transitions in labor from the Inca to Spanish empires. Excavations at the colonial site of Ferro Ingenio, a silver refinery in the San Juan Valley, southwest of the village of Porco, shed new light on labor in the first century of Spanish colonialism and how skilled indigenous workers negotiated their positions within colonial society.

Quliaqtuavut Tuugaatigun (Our Stories in Ivory): Reconnecting Arctic Narratives with Engraved Drill Bows

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation explores complex representations of spiritual, social and cultural ways of knowing embedded within engraved ivory drill bows from the Bering Strait. During the nineteenth century, multi-faceted ivory drill bows formed an ideal surface on which to recount life events and indigenous epistemologies reflective of distinct environmental and socio-cultural relationships. Carvers added motifs over time and the presence of multiple hands suggests a passing down of these objects as a form of familial history and cultural patrimony. Explorers, traders and field collectors to the Bering Strait eagerly acquired engraved drill bows as aesthetic manifestations of Arctic mores but recorded few details about the carvings resulting in a disconnect between the objects and their multi-layered stories. However, continued practices of ivory carving and storytelling within Bering Strait communities holds potential for engraved drill bows to animate oral histories and foster discourse between researchers and communities. Thus, this collaborative project integrates stylistic analyses and ethno-historical accounts on drill bows with knowledge shared by Alaska Native community members and is based on the understanding that oral narratives can bring life and meaning to objects within museum collections. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Art 2013
