This study investigated the relationships between diverse variables and secondary school pupils' Mathematics achievement. It also dealt with the relative contribution of each variable to Mathematics achievement and the significance of differences in Mathematics achievements when pupils' gender and home background as well as teachers' experience, gender, education, in-service education, homework assignment and testing frequency are taken into account. A questionnaire was administered on 163 standard 8 pupils. I The most important findings of this study were: {1) There was a significant relationship between pupil variables and Mathematics achievement. (2) Pupil variables, particularly self-concept, contributed significantly towards the variance in Mathematics achievement. Wiskunde as taal van die wetenskap en tegnologie is een van die weinige vakke wat spesifiek as voorvereiste vir die bestudering van sekere studierigtings gestel word. Leerlinge met Wiskunde-angs word verhoed om hul ware potensiaal in Wiskunde te verwesenlik en word sodoende gediskwalifiseer om hul regmatige plek in die beroepswereld in te neem. Die doel van hierdie studie was om te bepaal of hipnoterapie aangewend kan word om Wiskunde-angs tot werkbare vlakke te beperk sodat leerlinge optimaal in Wiskunde kan presteer. Die aard, oorsake, aanvang, herkenning, verklaring, gevolge, voorkoms en meting van Wiskunde-angs, die verband daarvan met Wiskundeprestasie en die hulp wat onderwysers en hulpprogramme kan lewer, is nagegaan. Daarna is hipnose en hipnoterapie beskou om te bepaal of dit as terapeutiese hulpmiddel pedagogies verantwoordbaar is. Mathematics anxiety prohibits certain pupils to reach their full potential in Mathematics and thus to obtain their rightful place in the world of work. The aim of this study was to determine whether hypnotherapy can be used to lower Mathematics anxiety levels to such an extend that pupils can optimally achieve in Mathematics. The nature, causes, extent, recognition, explanation, consequences, incidence and measurement of Mathematics anxiety, its relationship to achievement in Mathematics, as well as the help that can be rendered by teachers and treatment programmes were studied. Hypnotherapy was then examined to determine whether its use was pedagogically justifiable. The application and empirical comparison of item parameters of Classical Test Theory and Partial Credit Model of Rasch in performance assessments

This study empirically compares the Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Partial Credit Model (PCM) of Rasch focusing on the invariance of item parameters. The invariance concept which is the consequence of the principle of specific objectivity was tested in both CTT and PCM using the results of learners who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Mathematics examinations in 2010. The difficulty levels of the test items were estimated from the independent samples of learn- ers. The same sample of learners used in the calibration of the difficulty levels of the test items in the PCM model were also used in the calibration of the difficulty levels of the test items in CTT model. The estimates of the difficulty levels of the test items were done using RUMM2030 in the case of PCM while SAS was used in the case of CTT. RUMM2030 and SAS are both the statistical softwares. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the four different design groups of test takers. In cases where the ANOVA showed a significant difference between the means of the design groups, the Tukeys groupings was used to establish where the difference came from. The research findings were that the test items' difficulty parameter estimates based on the CTT theoretical framework were not invariant across the different independent sample groups. The over- all findings from this study were that the CTT theoretical framework was unable to produce item difficulty invariant parameter estimates. The PCM estimates were very stable in the sense that for most of the items, there was no significant difference between the means of at least three design groups and the one that deviated from the rest did not deviate that much. The item parameters of the group that was representative of the population (proportional allocation) and the one where the same number of learners (50 learners) was taken from different performance categories did not differ significantly for all the items except for item 6.6 in examination question paper 2. It is apparent that for the test item parameters to be invariant of the group of test takers in PCM, the group of test takers must be heterogeneous and each performance category needed to be big enough for the proper calibration of item parameters. The higher values of the estimated item parameters in CTT were consistently found in the sample that was dominated by the high proficient learners in Mathematics ("bad") and the lowest values were consistently calculated in the design group that was dominated by the less proficient learners. The role of mathematics in first year students’ understanding of electricity problems in physics

Mathematics plays a pertinent role in physics. Students' understanding of this role has significant implications in their understanding of physics. Studies have shown that some students prefer the use of mathematics in learning physics. Other studies show mathematics as a barrier in students' learning of physics. In this study the role of mathematics in students' understanding of electricity problems was examined. The study undertakes a qualitative approach, and is based on an intepretivist research paradigm. A survey administered to students was used to establish students' expectations on the use of mathematics in physics. Focus group interviews were conducted with the students to further corroborate their views on the use of mathematics in physics. Copies of students' test scripts were made for analysis on students' actual work, applying mathematics as they were solving electricity problems. Analysis of the survey and interview data showed students' views being categorised into what they think it takes to learn physics, and what they think about the use of mathematics in physics. An emergent response was that students think that, problem solving in physics means finding the right equation to use. Students indicated that they sometimes get mathematical answers whose meaning they do not understand, while others maintained that they think that mathematics and physics are inseparable. Application of a tailor-made conceptual framework (MATHRICITY) on students work as they were solving electricity problems, showed activation of all the original four mathematical resources (intuitive knowledge, reasoning primitives, symbolic forms and interpretive devices). Two new mathematical resources were identified as retrieval cues and sense of instructional correctness. In general, students were found to be more inclined to activate formal mathematical rules, even when the use of basic or everyday day mathematics that require activation of intuitive knowledge elements and reasoning primitives, would be more efficient. Students' awareness of the domains of knowledge, which was a measure of their understanding, was done through the Extended Semantic Model. Students' awareness of the four domains (concrete, model, abstract, and symbolic) was evident as they were solving the electricity questions. The symbolic domain, which indicated students' awareness of the use of symbols to represent a problem, was the most prevalent. / Science and Technology Education / D. Phil. This study used Polya’s problem-solving model to map the level of development of the algebraic problem solving skills of Grade 12 learners from the Oshana Region in Northern Namibia. Deficiencies in problem solving skills among students in Namibian tertiary institutions have highlighted a possible knowledge gap between the Grade 12 and tertiary mathematics curricula (Fatokun, Hugo & Ajibola, 2009; Miranda, 2010). It is against this background that this study investigated the problem solving skills of Grade 12 learners in an attempt to understand the difficulties encountered by the Grade 12 learners in the problem solving process. Although there has been a great deal of effort made to improve student problem solving throughout the educational system, there is no standard way of evaluating written problem solving that is valid, reliable and easy to use (Docktor & Heller, 2009). The study designed and employed a computer aided algebraic problem solving assessment (CAAPSA) tool to map the algebraic problem solving skills of a sample of 210 Grade 12 learners during the 2010 academic year. The assessment framework of the learners’ problem solving skills was based on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Schoenfeld’s (1992) theory of metacognition and Polya’s (1957) problem solving model. The study followed a mixed methods triangulation design, in which both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analysed simultaneously. The data collection instruments involved a knowledge base diagnostic test, an algebraic problem solving achievement test, an item analysis matrix for evaluating alignment of examination content to curriculum assessment objectives, a purposively selected sample of learners’ solution snippets, learner questionnaire and task-based learner interviews. The study found that 83.8% of the learners were at or below TIMSS level 2 (low) of algebraic problem solving skills. There was a moderate correlation between the achievement in the knowledge base and algebraic problem solving test (Pearson r = 0.5). There was however a high correlation between the learners’ achievement in the algebraic problem solving test and achievement in the final Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC) examination of 2010 (Pearson r = 0.7). Most learners encountered difficulties in Polya’s first step, which focuses on the reading and understanding of the problem. Learning about and understanding fractions and their role in the high school curriculum

A report from the Department of Basic Education (DBE, 2012c: 15) has highlighted that the lack in basic fraction sense was one of the areas of concern that contributed to the low achievement in matriculation mathematics examinations in 2012. Fractions play an important role in our ever-advancing technological society. Many occupations today rely heavily on the ability to compute accurately, proficiently, and insightfully with fractions. High school learners’ understanding or the lack thereof is carried over to their tertiary studies and workplaces. It is for that reason that in this dissertation, the learning and understanding of fractions and their role in the high school curriculum are studied through a critical literature review. Fractions are compound constructs and can therefore be interpreted in many different ways, depending on the area of study within mathematics. The concept of fractions consists of five sub-constructs, namely, part-whole, ratio, operator, quotient, and measure (Behr, Lesh, Post, & Silver, 1983; Kieren, 1980). This thesis starts with discussion of the background of the study and its importance. Thereafter the elements that assist in the understanding of the fraction concept is discussed. Then, the five different sub-constructs are elaborated on, and how these different sub-constructs are used in the high school curriculum is demonstrated. The conclusion offers some implications for classroom teaching and mathematics teachers’ professional development. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Talle leerders, tot op hoërskool vlak, ervaar probleme met breuke en berekeninge met breuke nie. ‘n Verslag van die Departement van Basiese Onderwys (DBE, 2012c: 15) het beklemtoon dat die gebrek aan basiese breuk vaardighede een van die oorsake was wat daartoe gely het dat die prestasie in die 2012 matriek wiskunde eksamen so laag was. Breuke speel ‘n belangrike rol in ons voortdurende tegnologiese voor uitgaande samelewing. Talle beroepe vandag is grootliks afhanklik van die akkurate, bekwame en insiggewende berekeninge van breuke. Hoërskool leerders se begrip, of die gebrek daaraan word oorgedra na hul tersiêre studies en werksplekke. Dit is vir dié rede dat hierdie tesis die leer en begrip van breuke en hul rol in die hoërskool kurrikulum bestudeer deur middel van ‘n kritiese literatuur studie. Breuke is ‘n saamgestelde konsep en kan vir hierdie rede op verskillende wyses geïnterpreteer word, afhangende van die area van studie in wiskunde. Die konsep van ‘n breuk bestaan uit vyf sub-konstrukte, naamlik deel-van-‘n-geheel, ‘n verhouding, operateur, kwosiënt en meting (Behr, Lesh, Post, & Silver, 1983; Kieren, 1980). Hierdie tesis begin met ‘n bespreking oor die agtergrond van hierdie studie en die belangrikheid daarvan. Daarna word die faktore wat bydra tot die verstaan van die breuk konsep. Dit word gevolg deur ‘n uitbreiding op die vyf verskillende sub-konstrukte en waar hierdie verskillende sub-konstrukte in die hoërskool kurrikulum voorkom. Die bevinding bied ‘n paar implikasies vir onderrig. Hierdie studie fokus nie op die ontwerp van enige take of ander leermateriaal vir ‘n intervensie program nie, maar konsentreer op die belangrike kwessies rondom breuke. My hoop is dat die bevindinge van hierdie studie implikasies inhou vir wiskunde onderwysers se professionele ontwikkeling deur hul te motiveer om nuwe leerondersteuningsmateriaal te ontwikkel en die aanbieding van breuke in klaskamers aan te pas sodat die begrip van breuke by leerders ten volle ontwikkel kan word.

Relationship between visual perceptual skill and mathematic ability

Poor mathematics performance in South African schools is of national concern. An attempt to gain insight into the problem prompted a study into the possibility of a relationship between visual perceptual skill and mathematic ability. A theoretical review revealed that inherent limitations of traditional psychological theories hinder an adequate explanation for the possible existence of such a relationship. The theory of situated cognition seems to be better suited as an explanatory model, and simultaneously clarifies the nature of both visual perception and mathematics. A small exploratory study, with a sample of 70 Grade 6 learners, provided empirical evidence towards the plausibility of the relationship. Specifically, it proved the hypothesis that visual perceptual skill positively correlates with scholastic mathematics achievement. The results of the study, interpreted within the situated cognitive framework, suggest that a conceptual emphasis in mathematics education – as opposed to a factual emphasis – might improve mathematic ability, which may credibly reflect in scholastic performance. / Psychology / M.
