Previous issue date: 2008-06-09 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The subject of this research is the Pragmatist Philosophy and its area of action is the
Popular Education. Our aim is investigating the possibility of applying Pragmatist
Philosophy in educational activities through the Popular Education. For doing so, we
developed a study concerning the Pragmatist Philosophy educational experience with
abandoned chidren from an institution named Foundação de Amparo ao Menor
(FUNDANOR), fron the city of Palmeira dos Índios, in the state of Alagoas Brazil.
We begin by critically investigating the fundamentals of the Program of the
Philosophy for Children and Adolescents, which was created by the american
philosopher and educator Matthew Lipman. Besides, we tried to bring together his
proposal to Paulo Freire s Pedagogy. This is a historical-bibliographical research that
was empirically developed with the assistence of a social in Popular Education. We
also examinad to which extent methodology used in teaching of Pragmatist
Philosophy accomplishs the plan of Alphabetization proposed by Paulo Freire s.
Finally, we concluded that there is an aplication of Pragmatist Philososophy in
Popular Education; so, it is an important tool in the process of developing a
thoughtful set of questions concerning education. Besides, we realizad that it is a
crucial point in the formation of philosophical, ethical and moral knowledges. Thus it
is possible to bring together thet philosophy and Paulo Freire s Pedagogy.

Einfluss des Weltbildes auf die Interpretation Biblischer Texte Untersucht am Beispiel von Predigten von Johannes ChrysostomusBrütsch, Martin Ulrich 31 October 2002 (has links)
Text in German / This thesis gives a short overview abont the anthropological term worldview and
discusses various views of it. A historic resume of the situation of the metropolis
Antiochia in Syria in the 4th century AD is followed by an analysis of some important
aspects of the worldview of its inhabitants. A short account of the life and work of John
Chrysostom is given and followed by an analysis of four of his homilies of the Gospel of
Matthew. These are compared with own exegetical points of view of the same texts. The
focus is directed to some topics where the influence of worfdview makes itself felt. In the
last chapter some observations in connection with the influence of worldview on biblical
interpretation ensue. The thesis closes with a short discussion of some missiological and
hermeneutical consequences / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Missiology)

Blind injustice : Jesus' prophetic warning against unjust judging (Matt 7:1-5)Chandler, Christopher N. January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to provide a plausible alternative to the consensus interpretation of Jesus' "do not judge" teaching in Matt 7:1-5. While the overwhelming majority of recent interpreters understand "do not judge" (7:1) and its concurrent sayings such as "take the log out of your own eye" (7:5) to promote a non-judgmental attitude, this monograph seeks to situate this block of teaching within a Jewish second-Temple judicial setting. To this end, an overview of the judicial system during the second Temple era is provided, after which it is argued that Matt 7:1-5 is the Matthean Jesus' halakhic, midrashic comment upon the laws for just legal judging in Lev 19:15-18, 35-36 by which he prophetically criticizes unjust legal judging. Jesus' brother James takes up this teaching in Jas 2:1-13, using it to exhort Jewish Christian leaders who judge cases within Diaspora synagogues/churches. Such an alternative interpretation of Jesus' "do not judge" teaching in Matt 7:1-5 matches well other passages in Matthew which likewise speak of judicial, brotherly conflict such as 5:21-26 and 18:15-35. Some early Christian writers who quote or allude to Matt 7:1-5 reflect a judicial understanding of these verses as well, often relating Matt 7:1-5 to Lev 19:15-18, 35-36 and/or drawing parallels between Matt 7:1-5 and one or more of the NT judicial texts which, this thesis argues, is related to it (Matt 5:21-26, 18:15-35; Jas 2:1-13).

From the exile to the Christ : exile, restoration and the interpretation of Matthew's gospelEloff, Mervyn 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2002 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate by critical interaction with four key areas of Matthean
research that 'restoration from exile' provides a valid and valuable hermeneutical prism for the
interpretation of Matthew's gospel. The investigation is undertaken from a Reformed and Evangelical
perspective and an inclusive approach is adopted with regard to hermeneutics, viz that interpretation
should take note of the historical and literary and theological aspects of Matthew's gospel. The four
key areas of investigation were chosen because they involve both particular texts and the gospel as
a whole and are, respectively, Matthew's genealogy, Matthew's concept of Salvation History, the Plot
of Matthew's gospel and Matthew's Use of the Old Testament. Each of these areas has already
received extensive attention in Matthean scholarship, though in each case the question of'restoration
from exile' has been almost entirely neglected. In each area, a brief critical survey of current
scholarship is provided, both in terms of content and methodology. This survey is then followed by
a discussion ofthe relevant texts and topics, demonstrating both the presence and the hermeneutical
importance of the 'restoration from exile' theme. In this way, the thesis thus shows that 'restoration
from exile' does indeed provide a valid though not exclusive, hermeneutical prism for the
interpretation of Matthew's gospel and that such an interpretation casts fresh light on both familiar
and more troublesome texts and topics of investigation. The final section of the thesis comprises a
brief survey of the theme of 'restoration from exile' within the Hebrew Scriptures and a
representative selection of early Jewish texts. On the basis of this survey, the conclusion is reached
that despite the very real diversity within early Judaism, it is possible to conclude that perhaps the
majority of Jews of the Second Temple Period saw themselves as still 'in exile', at least in theological
and spiritual terms. This in turn suggests that Matthew's presentation of Jesus as the one, who by
his death and resurrection brings the exile to an end, both for Israel and for the human race at large,
is designed to meet a very real spiritual and theological need. Furthermore, the pervasive interest in
'restoration from exile' within representative texts from Second Temple Judaism, and Matthew's
clear interest in this same theme, further support claims for the Jewish-Christian setting of Matthew 's
gospel and its dual function of legitimization for the Matthean communities and evangelistic appeal
to outsiders.

Ninety-five human skeletons from archaeological excavations at the protestant Saint-Matthew burial ground (Quebec City, 1771-1860) were studied with respect to two major aspects of palaeonutrition: palaeochemistry and palaeopathology. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between nutrition and health in this preindustrial population. Direct information on the types of food consumed was obtained from stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses of bone collagen, and indirect information was acquired by quantifying health status. Palaeopathological methods used are the “health index” method (Steckel et al.,2002) for interpopulational comparison, and then quantifications using more precise severity degrees for assessing intrapopulational variation. Data analysis revealed a relatively bad health status compared to other contemporary North-American groups despite a relatively similar nutrition. Food differences in relation to palaeodemographical data (age, sex) were noted, in particular about the variability of weaning process achievement. Furthermore, a diet depleted in C4 (corn, sugarcane) and in animal resources (meat, fish, dairy products) was noted for children between two and seven years old in comparison to older individuals. Finally, a possible relationship between pathologies severity (cribra orbitalia, periostitis) and the consumption of C4 and/or marine resources and animal products rich in protein was highlighted while comparing all the data.
