Hebrew Christianity and Messianic Judaism on the Church-Sect ContinuumKohn, Rachael L.E. 08 1900 (has links)

This thesis places Hebrew Christianity and Messianic Judaism on the church-sect continuum devised by Rodney Stark and William Sims Bainbridge (1979, 1980). According to an axis indicating low to high tension with the environment, Hebrew Christianity is placed on the para-church node, between the denomination and the sect. Messianic Judaism, in general, is placed on the high tension, sect end of the continuum. It is recognized, however, that individual organizations which comprise the movements may vary widely in their relationships to t he environment. Since the organizations as well as the movements may oscillate on the church-sect continuum, social movement propositions are introduced that can explain how and under what conditions these changes occur. A study of one Hebrew Christian organization, which contains both a low and a high tension group, shows, on the one hand, that a single organization can occupy two different . points on the church-sect continuum simultaneously. It shows, on the other hand, that this is made possible through the skillful use of leadership functions, which in turn is buttressed by the symbolic value of a Jewish leader. Finally, the peculiar situation of the HFOI is seen as reflective of the larger trends in the Hebrew Christian and Messianic Jewish movements, in general, and the different "agendas" of the Jewish and the Gentile followers, in particular.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Previous issue date: 2005-08-31 / This dissertation has as object the studying of Saint Dica`s case, occurred in
Lagoa Village, nowadays Lagolândia, district of Pirenópolis, in Goiás State, in the
second decade of 20th century. Analyzed by others researchers was interpreted as
being a social movement of messianic kind, common, at the beginning of the
Republic, as Muckers, Canudos, Contestado, Juazeiro had happened. The main
objective of the refered work is try to explain this kind of movement as being
created by archetype of Terra Sem Mal, present in the Brazilian imaginary, that
showed up in political, economic social crises situations. The principal hypothesis
was settled with: if it is possible to understand profoundly these social movements
named milenaristas, as being myths that belong to the humanity imaginary. The
studies of Jung are usuful as basis to the discussion about archetypes, the ones of
Sergio Buarque de Holanda are based in the vision of the paradise of colonizing
that stood in the imaginary of the Brazilian people. The sense of this utopia of
paradise was interpreted by the symbolic study of Eliade and complemented with
the Eternal Return of the same phenomenologist. To the history part of the chosen
subject the author exploited the dissertation of professor Lauro Vasconcelos, the
first academic informative about Saint Dica and also with the dissertation of
professor Eleonora Zicari. Newspapers, magazines, movie documentaries and field
researches, complemented the data collectio Hermeneuticas being the search of
sense of the social actor behavior served to reveal Saint Dica movement. The most
important conclusion of this dissertation is that, albeit the political, economic and
social crises, and even the ones psychologics may contribute to the rising of these
movements, however, there is, independent of these external conditions, in the
human imaginary, an appeal to the Paradise. In the imaginary of the Brazilian
people this archetype has a cultural historical support, since the arrival of the
Portuguese going through the republic messianic movement, and this appeal, as
Eliade says, acts in a circular way, that is, goes and comes back, it is a Myth that
always returns, specially in Saint Dica case, still present, in Lagolândia, in spite of
her leader had died in 1970, thirty years ago.
implantada no imaginário brasileiro.
destes movimentos, contudo existe, independente destas condições externas, no

Previous issue date: 2017-06-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / The aim of this dissertation is study the Messianic Judaism, a religious group which is characterized by believing in Yeshua (Jesus, in Hebrew) as the Messiah, while is considered a strand of the Judaism. Since they believe in Yeshua as being Messiah, would they have a Christology? This study contemplates the possibility of distinction in the Messianic Judaism theology, which the major hypothesis is: Messianic Jews have a view in the idea of that Messiah approaches more of Messianology than of a Christology. A qualitative research was conducted on the basis of the literature review on the subject. And for that, were selected as Messianic texts for this analysis the Messianic Jewish Manifest, by Rabbi David Stern and the first two volumes of Jewish Objections Against Jesus, by Rabbi Michael Brown. It was discussed concepts such as dogmatic Christology and Messianology, as this last concept was being proposed by David Flusser in addition to checking the convergences and divergences of the idea of the Messiah for Judaism, Christianity and Messianic Judaism in the first century AD. It was also reported about history of the Messianic-Jewish movement. The collected data throughout this research should be considered to point out to the fact that Messianic-Jewish thought about the Messiah does not seem to correspond to Christological thinking.

Jesus as the Son of Man in MarkTejada-Lalinde, Andres A 24 March 2014 (has links)
Scholars have often seen the interpretation of the Son of Man as crucial in discovering Jesus’ self-understanding, given that the expression occurs so frequently and almost exclusively on Jesus’ lips. After ascertaining the authenticity of the Son of Man sayings, I carry out the exegesis in the Gospel of Mark using a methodology consisting of examining Biblical passages within the context of the Bible as a whole and of historical-critical and philological perspectives. Also, the narrative context of the saying is taken into account. I show that the Son of Man is a Messianic title derived from Daniel 7:13, and that the book of Daniel’s content and themes were used as a basis for the Son of Man sayings themselves. In addition to using the Son of Man as a Messianic title, Jesus used the title as a claim for divinity.

Pojem dějin u Theodora W. Adorna a Waltera Benjamina / The Concept of History in the Works of Theodor W. Adorno and Walter BenjaminKettner, Marek January 2020 (has links)
The thesis examines the concept of history in the thinking of Walter Benjamin and Theodor W. Adorno. It systematically inquires into texts of the period between 1913 and 1932. Benjamin's thought is interpreted in its whole, with regards to his key concepts of messianic salvation, profane revolution, biblical fall, mythical positing of right, and actuality of the present. Adorno's contribution to the concept of history is examined on the basis of three early texts from the beginning of the thirties. The thesis follows first the evolution of the concept of history in the thought of Benjamin and then turns toward the relation between the explicated deliberations regarding the theme and the conception of Adorno. The major change which occurs during Adorno's accepting of Benjamin's terminology and thoughts lies in the fact that the concept of history is moved from the theological-eschatological context to the context of praxis. Key Words Philosophy of history, messianic salvation, revolution, myth, right, actuality, configuration.
