Arthur Miller's concept of tragedy

Stark, Howard James 01 January 1962 (has links)
In recent years, Arthur Miller has been the subject of much critical debate. Numerous critics have stated that his plays are not true tragedies because they do not meet the requirements for tragic drama. Several other critics, however, attempting to some to Miller’s defense, have stated just the opposite. So far, the situation has not been resolved; and there appears to be little chance that it will, considering the manner in which both Miller’s defenders and sensors have been approaching the problem. First, they have been brandishing a term which does not carry the same meaning for each of them. They have been forcing this term, with all its ramifications, upon Miller’s plays in order to make some erudite statement about the plays. Each has been attempting to justify his position by comparing Miller’s plays and his tragic heroes with plays and heros that symbolize best his own interpretation of tragedy. This approach is inconsistent, contradictory, and illogical; for it shows that the critics are examining Miller’s plays not as literary expressions unique in themselves but by standards which are far too often completely irrelevant to the situation. Also, this approach forces the critics to examine the plays out of context, thereby destroying their relevance. It is this problem that attention must be paid first. Therefore, the task before this paper is twofold. First, it is to examine MIller’s concept of tragedy, the philosophical ideas behind his plays, in order to see whether it is a logical, rational theory, one that is valid in itself. Once it has been determined whether Miller’s concept is valid then the second step can be taken: to analyze his plays in order to see whether they are artistic expressions true to and incorporating the beliefs expounded in his concept of tragedy. In no way does this approach invalidate the idea that the works must be examined by themselves and in themselves, for Miller’s theory and his plays should be expressions of the same viewpoint.

The Incompatibility of Citizenship Revocation with Liberal Nationalism : A Critique of David Miller / Oförenligheten av Tillbakadragande av Medborgarskap med Liberal Nationalism : En Kritik mot David Miller

Lindh, Emma January 2023 (has links)
In his seminal work Strangers in Our Midst (2016a.), David Miller develops his version of liberal nationalism, where he argues for liberal states being justified in requiring immigrants to integrate themselves culturally before giving them access to formal citizenship equal to native citizens. Elsewhere, Miller (2016b.) has also expressed that there are instances when states are justified in revoking citizenships for national security reasons. This paper argues that these positions held by Miller are inconsistent with each other. To make the case against Miller for why this is, three arguments are presented. Firstly, the strict immigration policy suggested in liberal nationalism is permissible because once it is successfully completed, the naturalised citizen gains equal standing in citizenship to native born citizens. If denationalisation is applied in conjunction, but only to some, then their citizenship statis is not equal, and thus the justification for liberal nationalist immigration policy is undermined. Secondly, while it might otherwise be plausible that this injustice is permissible by viewing dual citizens secondary citizenship as a protective privilege, the necessary integration in liberal nationalism makes this response less believable. Finally, one of the most important objectives in liberal nationalism is to promote trust between members. If dual citizens are the only ones who can have their citizenship revoked, and the only reason for this is on suspicion of terrorism, then this risk promoting mistrust against these individuals, making the combination of liberal nationalism and denationalisation self-defeating.

When Reality Was Surreal: Lee Miller's World War II War Correspondence for Vogue

Rose, Josh 12 1900 (has links)
During World War II, Lee Miller was an accredited war correspondent for Vogue magazine. Miller was trained as a surrealist photographer by Man Ray, and her wartime work, both photographic and written, is indicative of a combination of journalism and surrealism. This thesis examines Lee Miller's war correspondence within the context of Vogue magazine, establishing parallels between the photographs and writing to determine how surrealism informs it stylistically and ideologically. Using surrealist techniques of juxtaposition and an unmanipulated photographic style, and the surrealist concepts of the Marvelous and Convulsive Beauty, Miller presented the war as a surreality, or a surreal reality. This study concludes by using Miller's approach to suggest a new concept of journalistic practice: surrealist journalism.

Castro Rodríguez, Yuri Alejandro January 2015 (has links)

[en] STRATEGIC GROUPS IN THE BRAZILIAN FINANCIAL INDUSTRY: THE EFFECT OF STRATEGIC POSITIONING ON BANKS PERFORMANCE / [pt] GRUPOS ESTRATÉGICOS NA INDÚSTRIA FINANCEIRA BRASILEIRA: O EFEITO DO POSICIONAMENTO ESTRATÉGICO NO DESEMPENHO DOS BANCOS

BRUNO TRACHEZ DO COUTO 29 May 2008 (has links)
[en] The existence of a theoretical relationship between the performance of a company and its participation in existing groups in the industry is a central theme in researches about strategic groups. This work is not only about the most traditional analysis related to the differences among groups, but it also aims at complementing the empirical evidences through the analysis of the differences in performance associated with the positioning of the companies within these groups. In order to achieve that aim, strategic groups, composed of eighty banks performing in the banking industry in Brazil, were identified according to Miller and Dess` typology (1993). The banks were also classified according to their competitive positioning within each group. Results show that the typology adopted allowed the identification of groups composed of banks with similar strategies. Evidences show that strong investment banks, which use differentiation and low cost strategies simultaneously, reached higher level performances. However, there were no significant performance differences among banks with closer positioning to the strategies defining their groups and those adopting a more distant positioning.

Análise formal de Death of Salesman, de Arthur Miler, e Rasga Coração, de Oduvaldo Vianna Filho: a utilização do épico / Formal analysis of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and Rasga Coração by Oduvaldo Vianna Filho: the use of the epic

Oliveira, Ewerton Silva de 17 April 2012 (has links)
O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar e comparar as peças Death of a Salesman [Morte dum caixeiro viajante] (1949), do dramaturgo americano Arthur Miller (1915-2005), e Rasga Coração (1974), do dramaturgo brasileiro Oduvaldo Vianna Filho (Vianinha) (1936-1974), especialmente em relação aos elementos épicos presentes nelas. / The objective of this research is to analyze and compare the plays Death of a Salesman (1949), by the American playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005), and Rasga Coração, by the Brazilian playwright Oduvaldo Vianna Filho (Vianinha) (1936-1974), especially concerning their use of epic elements. Both plays have a formal structure that presents past and present simultaneously on stage. Since a dramatic work always presupposes the scenic exposure of the present as a central characteristic, the fact that the past is part of the structure of Death of a Salesman and Rasga Coração transforms it into the most important epic element in both plays. Other epic elements of importance for the repre-sentation of social and historical conflicts of the United States in the forties and of Bra-zil in the first seven decades of the XX century will be examined as well. Another char-acteristic shared by these two plays is the fact that they discuss the generation conflict between father and son(s) in a way that combines the representation of private family affairs to the one of bigger social and historical forces. To study the nature of these so-cial forces represented in the two plays is another objective of this research, which will discuss and point out similarities and differences between them and their respective so-cial contexts.
