Speeding Up the Process of Modeling Temporary Structures in a Building Information Model Using Predefined Families

Sabahi, Parsa 2010 December 1900 (has links)
It has been less than a decade that Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been used in construction industries. During this short period of time the application of this new modeling approach has increased significantly, but still the main users of such models are architects (for design purposes) and general contractors (for coordination purposes). Most of the BIM applications are developed to meet design and coordination requirements; yet sub-contractors face hassles when using this new technology to model their products, equipment and services in detail. The literature reveals that one of the reasons is they do not have access to the tools and objects they need to model their work within the BIM environment. Temporary structures, such as shoring systems and formworks, are good examples. Although these structures play a significant role in the logistics of the jobsite, there are neither a special tools nor predefined objects in BIM applications to help model these elements. In this case study a real building project has been used to model these temporary structures by two different methods: 1. Using ordinary tools in BIM application (Revit), and, 2. Using predefined parametric families of objects developed and customized for this project. During the modeling process, time has been recorded as well as other observations describing obstacles, advantages, and disadvantages of both methods. The results show that the usage of predefined parametric families speeds up the process of modeling and also helps to create a model which is more understandable and informative than 2D drawings that are currently being used by most of the sub contractors.

Modelling, Simulation and control of a Shortest Path Enthalpy Change Air Handling Unit with Liquid Desiccant

Wilkens, Marcus January 2021 (has links)
In an abundance of industries, production lines and facilities, a correct indoor climate is an integral part to ensure the quality of the products and also very important for its occupants. To ensure a high quality air climate it is not enough to control the air temperature, air humidity is of at least equal importance. Most heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC), are based on multiple treatment steps that each change both temperature and humidity. Due to the correlation between the temperature and relative humidity this results in system control difficulties, and unnecessary realignments to achieve the desired outputs. The novel Shortest path enthalpy change system (SPEC), developed by AirWaterGreen (AWG) with Controlled vapor pressure technology (CVP), aims to eliminate these problems. This is done by utilizing a method that may achieve the desired air quality with only one conditioning step, transferring heat and humidity simultaneously to or from the air. To validate this technology the work of this thesis is focused on producing a viable simulator model with verification, performed by comparing to a prototype system with the same technology. By verifying the simulator, it is also possible to continue development of the system by implementing system controllers within the Simulink environment. This provides the opportunity to ultimately obtain a highly efficient HVAC system with accurate setpoint control. In addition, the possibility of optimizing system dimensions is also investigated to allow for specific case configurations. The results show that high simulator accuracy is achievable, leading to a high confidence in the results, and showing that a PID or even proportional feedback controller is able to realize satisfactory system control. The optimization of dimensions shows that parallel computing is a fast way to reduce the amount of possible configurations that satisfy specific criteria. To support further development of the control and optimization of the system and ultimately hardware implementation, this thesis suggests points of interest for future work. These points include the improvement of ancillary simulator systems and further development of the pads physical equations, to increase the accuracy of process simulations, and the continued development of more complex controllers as well as their hardware implementation. Lastly, while focus of this thesis has been on the development of a functioning and controllable system, an important addition would be a study on the energy usage of the system and identifying points of interest for decreasing the total energy used from the system.

Avaliação de território e coremática. Aplicação ao município de São Paulo / Evaluation of territory and coremática. Application to São Paulo City

Gonçalves, André de Freitas 18 September 2012 (has links)
In a period where the changes occur at an accelerated way, operating a growing number of actors and the general processes that directly or indirectly reflect the local dynamics, we need to find analytical tools that can assist in understanding these changes. Even though global events strongly influence the location, increasingly smaller scales have greater responsibilities, because it is the place where the social and spatial inequalities appear explicitly. The characteristics of the contemporary period imposes us to the challenge of thinking and renew the technical analysis. Whereas the dimensions of a society is the geographical space, and good understanding of current reality involves the evaluation of our territories, we believe to be pertinent using the appropriate evaluation of territory and coremática as a way to achieving this task. Understood as theoretical methodological tools, the evaluation of territory and coremática are part of efforts to comprehend the contemporary reality, emerged from the need to better understand, more clearly and objectively, the organization of geographical space and the territorial dynamic and be able to, by means of criteria and parameters, an evaluation of the situation of a certain space. These analysis techniques have the same theoretical source and they complement each other. Their first formulations were composed by Roger Brunet, who led a group of French geographers who developed a series of investigations and therefore could improve them theoretically and methodologically. We will validate its use by applying the methodology in the analysis of São Paulo City.

Ensemble Kalman filtering for hydraulic conductivity characterization: Parallelization and non-Gaussianity

Xu, Teng 03 November 2014 (has links)
The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is nowadays recognized as an excellent inverse method for hydraulic conductivity characterization using transient piezometric head data. and it is proved that the EnKF is computationally efficient and capable of handling large fields compared to other inverse methods. However, it is needed a large ensemble size (Chen and Zhang, 2006) to get a high quality estimation, which means a lots of computation time. Parallel computing is an efficient alterative method to reduce the commutation time. Besides, although the EnKF is good accounting for the non linearities of the state equation, it fails when dealing with non-Gaussian distribution fields. Recently, many methods are developed trying to adapt the EnKF to non-Gaussian distributions(detailed in the History and present state chapter). Zhou et al. (2011, 2012) have proposed a Normal-Score Ensemble Kalman Filter (NS-EnKF) to character the non-Gaussian distributed conductivity fields, and already showed that transient piezometric head was enough for hydraulic conductivity characterization if a training image for the hydraulic conductivity was available. Then in this work, we will show that, when without such a training image but with enough transient piezometric head information, the performance of the updated ensemble of realizations in the characterization of the non-Gaussian reference field. In the end, we will introduce a new method for parameterizing geostatistical models coupling with the NS-EnKF in the characterization of a Heterogenous non-Gaussian hydraulic conductivity field. So, this doctor thesis is mainly including three parts, and the name of the parts as below. 1, Parallelized Ensemble Kalman Filter for Hydraulic Conductivity Characterization. 2, The Power of Transient Piezometric Head Data in Inverse Modeling: An Application of the Localized Normal-score EnKF with Covariance Inflation in a Heterogenous Bimodal Hydraulic Conductivity Field. 3, Parameterizing geostatistical models coupling with the NS-EnKF for Heterogenous Bimodal Hydraulic Conductivity characterization. / Natural abundances of stable nitrogen isotopes in rats : their variability and application for the study of body nitrogen fluxes and of the metabolic impact of nutritional and pathophysiological conditions using compartmental modeling.

Poupin, Nathalie 10 January 2013 (has links)
Natural abundances of stable nitrogen isotopes vary among tissues within an individual and among individuals within a population, and these differences are linked to the structural and functioning characteristics of the nitrogen metabolism and also to its modulations in response to variations in nutritional and physiological conditions. In this thesis, we developed an approach combining both experimentation and modeling, in order to better characterize and understand the modulations in the δ15N values of various nitrogen metabolic pools, and to show the capacity of the δ15N to provide information regarding the values and modulations of the body nitrogen fluxes, that are still poorly determined. We first measured the δ15N in various tissues (intestine, liver, plasma, muscle, kidney, skin …) and in various nitrogen fractions (amino acids, proteins, urea, NH4) in rats, under different nutritional (i.e. in rats fed with P of distinct quality, that were milk and soy P) or pathophysiological (i.e. in rats that had or not become obese and insulin resistant after being fed a high-fat diet for 10 weeks). From these experimental data, we showed (i) that the tissue nitrogen discrimination (i.e., the difference between tissue and diet δ15N) is higher when the P is of lesser quality, and (ii) that, during the onset of a metabolic syndrome, in the presence of both insulin resistance and obesity, the δ15N differed in some nitrogen pools and thus constitute isotopic signatures of the metabolic impact of such conditions. In this thesis, we also measured the δ15N kinetics in the amino acid and protein fractions of several tissues after a shift in the diet δ15N. The analysis of these kinetics, using a compartimental modeling approach, enabled us to estimate tissue fractional turnover rates and to investigate the structure and the functioning of the protein synthesis and breakdown exchanges in some tissues and their level of compartmentation. Lastly, we developed a multi-compartmental model that describes the various body nitrogen transfers between and within tissues and accounts for the observed δ15N variability. This model of the nitrogen metabolism provides a new and systemic insight of the interactions and modulations of the various nitrogen fluxes, as opposed to the fragmented information available from the literature data. This model enabled us to reconstruct the mechanisms that caused the observed δ15N differences between nitrogen pools, to better understand how they vary, depending on which metabolic modulation and with which amplitude, and finally to hypothesize which nitrogen fluxes alterations are the more likely to be responsible for the δ15N variations that we observed in our experimentations. In conclusion, our experimental and modelling results show that it is feasible to gain information from the δ15N values regarding the metabolic nitrogen fluxes and their modulations, and highlight the interest of this new approach to get an integrated insight into the complex nitrogen metabolic system and a better understanding of the way the various between and within tissues nitrogen fluxes are regulated and altered.

The identification of sources of particulate matter has been a topic of growing interest throughout the world to assist the air quality management. This class of studies is conventionally based on the use of receptor models, which identify and quantify the sources responsible from the concentration of the contaminant in the receptor. There are a variety of receptor models, this study compares the results of chemical mass balance (CMB) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models for a database of PM2.5, for the region of Brighton, Colorado, with a view to investigate the difficulties in the use of each model, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. It is known that the CMB model has the disadvantage of requiring source profiles, determined experimentally, to be applied and also has limitations when the sources involved are similar. On the other hand, the PMF model does not require source profiles, it has the disadvantage to require a large amount sample, in receptor. The results showed, based on performance measures that both models were able to reproduce the data of the receptor with reasonable fit. However, different results were adjusted for performance measurements. The CMB model, used 9 types of sources and PMF model found only 6 types of sources, it was noted by that what the PMF model has difficulty in modeling sources that appear occasionally. The sources ammonium sulfate, soil, diesel vehicles and ammonium nitrate have good correlation in the results of the two model of sources apportionment. The source profiles used in the CMB model and results of the PMF model that present more similarities were of the sources ammonium nitrate, soil, ammonium sulfate and combustion of wood and/or smoker vehicles. It was verified what the PMF model does not separate well species in the source profiles, therefore becomes even more complex to identify the sources in the FMP model, requiring considerable knowledge about the composition of many sources. For the database used with similar sources, the lack of confidence in the results based only on receptors models for a final decision on the source apportionment.

L'hôpital magnétique : définition, conceptualisation, attributs organisationnels et conséquences perçues sur les attitudes au travail / Magnet hospital : definition, conceptualization, organizational attributes and perceived consequences on work attitudes

Sibé, Matthieu 21 November 2014 (has links)
Many contemporary findings are alarmed of the recurring discomfort of hospital human resources, especially against doctors and nurses, and consequently against risk of poor quality of care for patients. Adopting a more optimistic approach, American nursing scholars have highlighted since the 1980s, some magnet hospitals, able to attract and retain, and with good working and care conditions. This thesis aims to explore Magnet Hospital concept, to inform its definition and scope for hospital human resource management in France. According to a hypothetico-deductive approach, based on a review of the literature, the conceptualization begins with appropriation of synthetic Magnet Hospital model. Under a psychosocial perspective, our original research model focuses on perception of managerial magnetic attributes (transformational leadership, perceived empowerment of participation, collegial climate between doctors and nurses) and their consequences on positive job attitudes (satisfaction, commitment, intent to rest, emotional equilibrium work/family, perceived collective efficacy), at wards level. A quantitative methodology proceeds by a questionnaire of 8 ad hoc scales and interviews 133 doctors, 361 nurses, 362, auxiliary nurses, in 36 French medicine units. A set of structural equations modeling, according to Partial Least Squares, tests nature and intensity of direct and indirect relationships of perceived managerial magnetism. The statistical results show a good validity of constructs and a good fit of models. The major positive effect of magnetic managerial context is on perceived collective efficacy. Some professional differences exist about perceptions of composition and transmission of magnetic effects (via mediation of perceived collective efficacy), indicating the contingency of magnetism. These findings open managerial and scientific opportunities, emphasizing the interest for positive organizational approach of hospital.

Du, Mingxuan 09 December 2016 (has links)
Groundwater modeling with deterministic model is a complicated process, especially in complex aquiferswhere the quantity and the quality of the measuted data arc not satisfying. The unconfined alluvialaquifet is the main water resource in the lower valley of Vat river, Ftench Riviera, but it faces a thteat ofshortage and pollution. Despite numerous previous studies, the dynamics of the gtoundwater flow in thealluvial aquifer and the characteristics of the rivet-aquifer exchanges ¿re s':ll partially unknown. Therefore the local u/ater management service requires a decision support system PSS) based onnumerical models to ensure a better groundwater management. A hydraulic model is set up withFEFLO!ø software by considedng ptecþitation, evâpotranspiration, gtoundwatet exftacdon and rivetaquiferexchanges. The non-documented groundwater exttaction fot agticultural use and the transferrates in the dverbed along the river have been calibtated. The model has been validated with asimulation of 7266 days. The model is applied to simulate the scenarios of flood and drought events, thepollution events in the unconfined aquifer in the valley and the seawater inrusion in the estuary of Yarriver. These case studies contributes to increase the knowledge of the aquifet. A fust conception of theDSS tool is presented as the last example of model application. A coupling interface is developed thanksto aJava which enables an automatic exchange of data between the groundwater flow model and thesurface wâter flow model built with MII(E2ltr}'/.
