Vocabulary : it's all about words working together : an interactive multimedia program to improve senior phase English first additional language learners’ functional vocabulary through an increased understanding of everyday authentic texts and classical and contemporary poetryEkron, Anna Cecilia 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The continuing decline in Matriculation pass rates is a matter of concern for
government, educators, parents and students in South African schools.
According to official statistics, only 8% of South Africans are mother-tongue
English speakers, yet English is the chief language of learning and teaching
in South African schools. Researchers relate the poor pass rate to
inadequate proficiency in English of both English First Additional Language
learners and some of their teachers. Research has further revealed a
significant positive correlation between reading comprehension and academic
achievement.
Consensus exists among researchers about the necessity of a basic
vocabulary (variously estimated at 2000 to 3000 words and more) for
developing the necessary reading comprehension. Theories and approaches
regarding the development of vocabulary, however, are sometimes
diametrically opposed to one another. Among the most conflicting theories
are those which advocate the acquisition of vocabulary by guessing the
meanings of words from the context as opposed to those favouring conscious
and deliberate vocabulary teaching, which may include lists of words.
The current study briefly investigates underlying problems, theories,
methods and approaches to enhancing learners’ vocabularies. Conclusions
are applied to the development of an interactive, multimedia program for
improving learners’ functional vocabularies. The content of the program is
based on authentic texts and simulations of situations which call for language
interaction. This is supplemented with extracts from classical literary works
and poetry and entertaining verses which present possibilities for use in
vocabulary building.

Aschenputtel und ihre Schwestern : Frauenfiguren im Marchen : eine Kontrastierung des Grimmschen Aschenputtel von 1857 mit Aschenputtelerzählungen des 20. und 21. JahrhundertsWittmann, Gerda-Elisabeth 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Modern Foreign Languages))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / It has been widely assumed that the portrayal of women in fairytales subscribes to somewhat
outdated and stereotypical modes of representation. Upon closer inspection however, it can be
seen that this is a fallacious assumption and that the female roles in these stories are much
more multidimensional in nature. One of the most popular fairytales from the Grimm Brothers
is Cinderella. The portrayal of women in this story is typical of the weak, subjected woman
who needs to be rescued by the prince from her unfavourable and subjugated position.
The research presented here aims to show that the Grimm’s specific depiction of Cinderella in
the 19th century provides an alternative to the modern myth. Here, she reacts strongly and
independently to find the most advantageous resolution to her problematic subject position.
To this end the Grimms’ version will be compared to text and filmic versions from the 20th
and 21st centuries. By comparing aspects of female representation in the Cinderella-themed
portrayals, one can evaluate the extent to which societal expectations have altered over time
as well as investigating the modern-day implications of this.

Afrikaans as kommunikasietaal in sy elementêre vorm by derdetaalsprekers by Hoërskool WestonVraagom, Elvin 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Over the past three years, Weston High School has received an increasing number of
Xhosa-speaking learners. They come from remote rural towns in the Eastern Cape. At
present, there are approximately forty Xhosa-speaking learners at the school. Many of
these learners understand very little English or Afrikaans while others speak “broken”
Afrikaans and / or English. They have a lack op prior knowledge and their exposure to
Afrikaans was limited.
As part of this project, a computer programme was designed to support the Afrikaans
language needs of these learners. The programme endeavours to develop the limited
vocabulary and language abilities of these learners in elementary Afrikaans. The
emphasis is on Afrikaans as a medium of communication. The programme has been
developed according to the language needs of these learners.
The design and composition of the project is based on general theoretical principals of
computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The project is discussed and analysed
within the CALL environment.

Abenteuer mit Werner und Roswitha : a multimedia program based on suggestopedic principles for the teaching of German in the first year at universityVan der Merwe, Cornelia Christina 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / Suggestopedia, as an innovative method of teaching, inter alia, second and foreign languages, has reportedly achieved exceptional results. With the development of this multimedia program it was decided to base the program on suggestopedic principles. In this thesis, I discussed the theory of adult second language acquisition, cognitive learning theory, constructivist learning theory and the consequences these theories have on language teaching. The overview of literature incorporates a description and analysis of Suggestopedia and looks at Suggestopedia from the following perspectives:
• a description of suggestion
• a description of suggestology
• the basic premises of Suggestopedia
• the purpose of Suggestopedia
• the principles of Suggestopedia
• the suggestopedic cycle
• the suggestopedic text
• the classroom module
• the computer program.
The multimedia computer program was developed to enhance the classroom module of the first year students of German at the university. In this thesis, I describe the interface and design of this program in terms of colour, incorporating colour theory, the name of the program, the overall design and the structure of each scene.

Beyond buzzwords : towards an evaluation framework for computer assisted language Learning in the South African FET sectorCoetzee, Renee Wilma 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The evaluation and selection of software is a complex undertaking best performed by those with applicable specialised skills and knowledge. When it comes to a field like CALL, which draws on the theory and best practice of a variety related disciplines, language teachers in the South African FET sector are unlikely to possess those specialised skills and knowledge beyond language learning content. In an effort to make the evaluation and selection of CALL software a more productive process, the literature pertaining to the components that constitute CALL and the South African FET context was reviewed. Based on this an evaluation framework was developed incorporating all the crucial contextual elements. The choice of a framework as opposed to a checklist was motivated by a need to reflect context at a variety of levels, combined with the flexibility allowing customisation for use in a variety of language learning settings.

A internacionalização e ensino básico: suas motivações / Internationalization and basic education: their motivationsServilha, Gustavo Brechesi 26 May 2014 (has links)
This paper discusses the motivations that drive the internationalization of basic education, with special attention to high school. Through a qualitative and deductive analysis, the research has the hypothesis that the inclusion of the theme of internationalization of basic education in public schools is directly related to the politicalinstitutional and sociological motivations, in the context of globalization and new strategies for international operations national and subnational actors, and, in the case of the Education, the main instrument for this action is the teaching of modern foreign languages. The analysis was developed through theoretical analysis in the field of International Relations, Political Science, Sociology and Law, as well as the practical field, to analyze possible factors of internationalization in the Secretariat of Education of the State of São Paulo. At the end, it is concluded that the process of globalization (and its integrative and exclusionary character), the process of regional integration, new strategies of action states through public diplomacy and paradiplomacy, the new strategies for schooling from families (and from states), the resumption of the importance of teaching modern foreign languages from the LDB 1996, and the growing demand for knowledge in this field, had caused the environment and the conditions required for the issue of the agenda and enter in the field of public policy

Överinvesterarna : En studie av avancerade språkelever i gymnasieskolanKrigh, Josefine January 2013 (has links)
Over-investors – a study of advanced language pupils in the upper secondary school. The thesis examines the advanced study of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) from a sociological point of view, inspired by Bourdieu. Founded in official statistics and a specially designed survey its main findings can be said to be that it is mainly pupils with a high amount of acquired educational capital from higher social backgrounds who avail themselves of this opportunity, predominantly girls. The amount of inherited language and transnational capital in the family seems to be of particular importance for the pupils’ choice of advanced language studies. French, German and Spanish are the predominant languages of study. Advanced courses in MFL are almost exclusively taught at elite schools, rich in symbolic capital.

Previous issue date: 2014-09-04 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / This work aims at understanding how the Linguistic Policy proposed for the state system of the state of Amazonas is shaped and how it is carried out in reality in public schools in the capital city. We start with the presentation of conceptual terms Policy and Planning and with the new configuration of society geared by globalization. We go through the history of the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Brazil and the elements that make up the interpretive schema within the Amazon Rainforest with regard to aspects related to the formation of the Amazonian social thinking and the de/construction of the identity of a people. We analyzed official state documents which deal with laws and proposals for teaching of MFL. We finally presented a comparison between what the laws say and the reality of public schools in the state system of the capital city. The research is based on the theoretical assumptions of Discourse Analysis.
