Testing Theoretical Relationships among Alcohol Use, Drinking to Cope, Mood Regulation Expectancies, and DepressionDeMarce, Josephine Marie 17 February 2006 (has links)
Participants (N = 164) completed measures of depression, negative mood regulation expectancies, coping motives for alcohol use, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems allowing for cross-sectional and prospective examinations of theoretically derived hypotheses regarding motivational models for alcohol use and related problems in a college population. Using hierarchical linear regression techniques, 3 hypotheses were examined. The hypothesis that lower levels of depression and higher levels of negative mood regulations expectancies would interact to predict drinking to cope was not supported. The hypothesis that drinking to cope would be predictive of alcohol-related problems even when alcohol consumption was controlled for was supported. The creation of two subscales intended to measure objective and subjective alcohol-related problems is explained. There was mixed support for the hypothesis that drinking to cope is more predictive of subjective alcohol-related problems compared to objective alcohol-related problems. Findings from the current study provide support for social learning theory and have implications for alcohol intervention programs on college campuses. / Ph. D.

Mood and risk-taking judgment: The role of mood regulationKim, Min Young 10 April 2008 (has links)
During the past decade, there has been increased attention on the role of mood on risk-taking and judgment. According to Isen¡¯s (1987) mood-maintenance hypothesis, individuals in a negative mood state tend to take greater risks than individuals in a neutral or positive mood state in order to improve their mood. In contrast, however, theorizing and research derived from an information-processing perspective indicates that individuals in a negative mood are more likely to engage in deliberate cognitive processes directed toward avoiding risk. This study seeks to resolve the discrepancy between these two perspectives by examining the influence of systematic cognitive processing as a mood regulation strategy (Forgas, 1998). Negative mood states were induced using a standardized film clip procedure. Participants then completed a risk-taking questionnaire either immediately following the induction, after performing a moderately difficult word anagram task, or after a delay period. As expected, participants in the anagram task condition showed lower levels of risk-taking preference than participants in the immediate judgment and delayed task conditions. Implications and future research directions for research in risk-taking and mood regulation are discussed.

The thesis presents the concept of emotion regulation in connection with music and its listening. It deals with the theoretical definition of emotions and in the context of emotion regulation supports the process model following the theory of appraisal. For further description we choose reappraisal strategy, with which is also worked in this research study in the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), which analyses 215 responses from 215 respondents by collecting online study data and finding that three variables predict this strategy, namely discharge (VE), entertainment (Z) and revival (R) of the used questionnaire Music in Mood Regulation (MMR). Furthermore, a negative correlation was found in the strategy of suppression with life satisfaction and a positive correlation of reappraisal with life satisfaction. The thesis by its research outcomes supports connection of ER concept together with mood regulation by music.

Dreaming is a complex, multimodal and sequentially organized model of the waking world (Metzinger, 2003). Nightmares are a category of dreams involving threatening scenarios, anxiety and other negative emotions (Hartmann, 1998; Nielsen & Levin, 2007). Dreams and nightmares are explored in this present thesis in the light of psychology and modern cognitive neuroscience as to their nature, function and neural correlates. The three main dream theories and their leading investigations are reviewed to evaluate their evidence and overall explanatory power to account for the function of dreams and nightmares. Random Activation Theories (RATs) claim dreams are biological epiphenomena and by-products of sleep underlying mechanisms (Crick & Mitchison, 1983; Flanagan, 1995, 2000a, 2000b, Hobson & McCarley, 1997). Mood regulation theories consider that the psychological function of dreams is to regulate mood and help with the adaptation of individuals to their current environment such as solving daily concerns and recovery after trauma exposure (Hartmann, 1996; Levin, 1998; Stickgold, 2008; Kramer, 1991a, 1991b, 2014). Threat Simulation Theories of dreams present the evolutionary function for dreaming as a simulating off-line model of the world used to rehearse threatening events encountered in the human ancestral environment (Revonsuo, 2000a). With the threat-simulation system, threats were likely to be recognized and avoidance skills developed to guarantee reproductive success. TST consider nightmares to reflect the threat-simulation system fully activated (Revonsuo, 2000a). Supported by a robust body of evidence TST is concluded to be the most plausible theory at the moment to account as a theoretical explanation of dreams and nightmares

Music listening is considered one of the most ubiquitous activities in everyday life, and one of the main reasons why people listen is to affect and regulate their mood. The vast availability and unlimited access of music has made it difficult to find relevant music that fits both the context and the preferences of the music listener. The aim of this project was to investigate the personalized relationship between music and mood using everyday technologies, focusing on how a listening experience could be adapted to the desired affect of a music listener while also taking the user’s individual listening history into account. In large, the project concentrated on the possibility of using context-aware music recommendation to generate personalized playlists by focusing on the audio features and corresponding mood of the music. A web-based application was developed to act as a prototype for the study, where the application allowed users to connect to Spotify, pick a desired mood and generate a playlist. By allowing people to access music in this personalized way, a user study could be conducted in order to investigate their music listening while incorporating this recommendation tool. The findings showed that the users’ found the experience to be engaging in that they could use the application as a companion to everyday tasks in addition to it being a tool for getting new, personalized music recommendations. Overall, the participants also found the generated playlists to be accurate to their music preferences and desired affective state.

本研究目的在整合依附理論、負向情緒調適預期和壓力因應三種理論觀點,建構面臨生涯抉擇的大四學生之情緒經驗歷程模式。研究採問卷調查法,以台灣八所大學783位大四學生為對象。研究工具包括依附風格量表、負向情緒調適預期量表、生涯抉擇壓力因應量表、快樂感受量表和憂鬱量表。資料分析方法為因素分析、信度分析、皮爾遜積差相關分析、t考驗、單因子變異數分析及結構方程模式。
初步模式驗證發現,初始模式與觀察資料間無法適配,故根據修正指標,刪除不適當路徑、整併觀察變項、將部分觀察變項的殘差連結後,產生三個理論模式。進一步進行模式適配度考驗,顯示三個模式與觀察資料間適配度良好,並能有效解釋變項間的關係。模式一:依附會影響負向情緒調適預期;依附會透過正向壓力因應影響情緒經驗。模式二:依附會影響負向情緒調適預期;依附會透過負向壓力因應影響情緒經驗。模式三:依附會透過情緒焦點因應影響情緒經驗;依附會透過負向情緒調適預期和情緒焦點因應影響情緒經驗。
三個模式的共通處為:依附會影響個人的壓力因應;個人的壓力因應會影響其情緒經驗;依附並不會直接影響個人的情緒經驗,但依附會透過壓力因應而對情緒經驗產生影響;依附會影響個人的負向情緒調適預期。
研究建議為:宜積極發展生涯輔導方案與生涯探索課程;協助個案瞭解依附、負向情緒調適預期和壓力因應對其情緒經驗的影響;針對不安全依附者提供預防介入;以不同性別和不同依附型態者為對象,進行模式的建構與驗證;採焦點團體法或縱貫研究法進行研究;將其他重要變項納入模式中,或探究變項間的關係;依附和情緒經驗等測量工具的改進。 / The purpose of the study was to integrate attachment theory, coping theory, and the perspective of expectancies for negative mood regulation (NMR) to develop the process model of emotional experiences for senior college students encountering the stress of career choice. The participants of the study were 783 senior college students in Taiwan. The participants were evaluated by Attachment Style Scale, NMR Scale, Coping Scale, Happiness Scale, and Depression Scale. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, Cronbach α analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and SEM.
In the primitive model testing, the original model couldn’t fit with the observed data. Adjustment is thus made, in accordance with the modification index, to delete the unsuitable paths, combine the observed variances and line the error variances of some observed variances. Three models are generated. As shown in the result of model testing, the three models coordinate with the observed data, explaining the relationships among main variables. Model one: Attachment can affect NMR; attachment can affect emotional experiences through positive coping. Model two: Attachment can affect NMR; attachment can affect emotional experiences through negative coping. Model three: Attachment can affect emotional experiences through emotion-focused coping; attachment can affect emotional experiences through NMR and emotion-focused coping. The similarities in the three models were as follows: Firstly, attachment can affect coping. Secondly, coping can affect emotion. Thirdly, attachment can’t affect emotional experiences directly, but attachment can affect emotional experiences through coping. Fourthly, attachment can affect NMR.
The suggestions were as follows: 1.The programs of career guidance and the curriculum of career exploration should be developed. 2. The clients should be assisted to understand the influence of attachment, NMR, and coping on their emotional experiences. 3. The preventive intervention should be provided to students of insecure attachment. 4. The models should be developed and tested according to the participants of different gender and attachment styles. 5. The focus group interview and the longitudinal method should be adopted. 6. Other important variables should be added to the model; alternatively, the relationships of these variables be explored. 7. The instructions of measurement in attachment and emotional experiences should be improved.
