An Algorithm to Recognize Multi-Stable Behavior From an Ensemble of Stochastic Simulation Runs

Monzon, Eduardo 01 December 2013 (has links)
Synthetic biological designers are demanding tools to help with the design and verifica- tion process of new biological models. Some of the most common tools available aggregate multiple simulation results into one “clean” trajectory that hopefully is representative of the system’s behavior. However, for systems exhibiting multiple stable states, these techniques fail to show all the possible trajectories of the system. This work introduces a method capable of detecting the presence of more than one “typical” trajectory in a system, which can also be integrated with other available simulation tools.

Cellular Neural Networks with Switching Connections

Devoe, Malcom, Devoe, Malcom W, Jr. 06 May 2012 (has links)
Artificial neural networks are widely used for parallel processing of data analysis and visual information. The most prominent example of artificial neural networks is a cellular neural network (CNN), composed from two-dimensional arrays of simple first-order dynamical systems (“cells”) that are interconnected by wires. The information, to be processed by a CNN, represents the initial state of the network, and the parallel information processing is performed by converging to one of the stable spatial equilibrium states of the multi-stable CNN. This thesis studies a specific type of CNNs designed to perform the winner-take-all function of finding the largest among the n numbers, using the network dynamics. In a wider context, this amounts to automatically detecting a target spot in the given visual picture. The research, reported in this thesis, demonstrates that the addition of fast on-off switching (blinking) connections significantly improves the functionality of winner-take-all CNNs. Numerical calculations are performed to reveal the dependence of the probability, that the CNN correctly classifies the largest number, on the switching frequency.

Atenção para tarefas simples e complexas nas perspectivas de primeira e terceira pessoa : um experimento fenomenológico / Attention to simple and complex tasks in the perspectives of first and third person: a phenomenological experiment

Rosemberg, Daniel January 2008 (has links)
This paper compares the attention performance between molecular task (focus on simple and reduced tasks), which the attribution of meaning is external; with molar task (focus on complex task that require abstract and global apprehension), which the attribution of meaning is internal. The investigation was organized into three studies. First, it was presented the short-length movie "i" to 26 undergraduate students in psychology, to undertake the molar attention proprieties as a multi-stable field. It was asked to the participants to write a free reports right after the movies exhibition. A phenomenological semiotic analysis of the reports interpreted that the movie was pregnant of emotional appeal, mobilized viewers’ attention, and invited the participants to reflect about themselves. Second, it was applied the Rosemberg’s Attention Questionnaire to 140 universities student to examined the psychometrical proprieties. The measure is a selfreport about the experience of attention and the results were modest (alpha=.60). However, the factorial analysis was encouraging. The items used were adequate, but it suggested an increase in number and in spectrum, to explore the attention to repeat tasks. Third, it was developed a phenomenological experiment to verify the influence of a distractor as molecular task (counting the protagonist duplicate appearance in scene) in a molar task (meaning apprehension of the movie). Twenty-two graduate psychology students were asked to respond to three instruments in the following sequence: 1) Concentrated Attention Test (third person data); 2) Rosemberg’s Attention Questionnaire (first person data); 3) Exhibition of the short-length movie "i" (first and third person data). The results for the external attribution were compatible with third person information already knew (experimental psychology), as showed in the significant correlation between concentrated attention and counting the protagonist duplicate appearance in scene. Therefore, first person data did not correlated with third person data. However, the performance for the molar task was successful (qualitative significance). The results suggest that the reflexive process is necessarily dependent on attention, but uses cognitive plasticity for meaning composition, excluding the apparently superfluous in the constitution of a message.

Contribution to optical wireless multi-stable micro-actuation / Contribution au micro-actionnement multi-stable piloté par radiations optiques

Liu, Xingxing 07 October 2015 (has links)
In this work, a bistable mechanism based on antagonistic pre-shaped double beams was proposed. Employing the proposed bistable mechanism, a quadristable micro-actuator was designed. ln order to validate the quadristability of the device, a meso-scaled prototype was fabricated from MDF by laser cutting. After the quadristability was experimentally confirmed, a quadristable micro-actuator was realized on SOl wafer using DRIE technique. Strokes for inner row and outer row were reduced to 300 µm and 200 µm respectively. For the actuation of the quadristable micro-actuator,laser heated SMA elements with deposited Si02 layer were used to realize the optical wireless actuation. With the help of a laser beam steering micro-mirror, both inner row and outer row were successfully actuated. ln order to further reduce the stroke, a bistable actuator with stroke reducing structure was designed and a prototype eut from MDF was tested. Bistability was validated and a stroke of 1µm was experimentally achieved. Based on this bistable module, a multistable nano-actuator, which contains four parallel coupled bistable modules, was designed and simulated. The simulated result have indicated that it was capable of outputs 16 discrete stable positions available from 0 nm to 150 nm with a step of 10 nm between two stable positions.

Achieving Complex Motion with Fundamental Components for Lamina Emergent Mechanisms

Winder, Brian Geoffrey 01 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Designing mechanical products in a competitive environment can present unique challenges, and designers constantly search for innovative ways to increase efficiency. One way to save space and reduce cost is to use ortho-planar compliant mechanisms which can be made from sheets of material, or lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs). This thesis presents principles which can be used for designing LEMs. Pop-up paper mechanisms use topologies similar to LEMs, so it is advantageous to study their kinematics. This thesis outlines the use of planar and spherical kinematics to model commonly used pop-up paper mechanisms. A survey of common joint types is given, as well as an overview of common monolithic and layered mechanisms. In addition, it is shown that more complex mechanisms may be created by combining simple mechanisms in various ways. The principles presented are applied to the creation of new pop-up joints and mechanisms, which also may be used for lamina emergent mechanisms. Models of the paper mechanisms presented in Chapter 2 of the thesis are found in the appendix, and the reader is encouraged to print, cut out and assemble them. One challenge associated with spherical and spatial LEM design is creating joints with the desired motion characteristics, especially where complex spatial mechanism topologies are required. Hence, in addition to a study of paper mechanisms, some important considerations for designing joints for LEMs are presented. A technique commonly used in robotics, using serial chains of revolute and prismatic joints to approximate the motion of complex joints, is presented for use in LEMs. Important considerations such as linkage configuration and mechanism prototyping are also discussed. Another challenge in designing LEMs is creating multi-stable mechanisms with the ability to have coplanar links. A method is presented for offsetting the joint axes of a spatial compliant mechanism to introduce multi-stability. A new bistable spatial compliant linkage that uses that technique is introduced. In the interest of facilitating LEM design, the final chapter of this thesis presents a preliminary design method. While similar to traditional methods, this method includes considerations for translating the mechanism topology into a suitable configuration for use with planar layers of material.
