Relationship Between Parents' Attitudes and Involvement in an Elementary School

Williams, Vaneia LaShea 01 January 2017 (has links)
Parental involvement at Shady Lane Elementary School is lower than the district average, which might be contributing to low levels of student achievement. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore attitudes of parents at the school and selected parental involvement behaviors. The framework for this study was the theory of planned behavior. The focus of research question 1 was the relationship between parents' attitudes toward the school and parental involvement in the form of communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. The focus of research question 2 was the relationship between parents' attitudes toward parental involvement and parental involvement in the form of communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. The covariates were parents' level of education, employment status, and income. Survey data were collected from 108 parents of students in Grades 1-5. Descriptive statistics showed parents had low levels of all 3 types of parental involvement and negative attitudes toward the school and that parents' attitudes toward parental involvement were almost equally positive and negative. Spearman correlations showed a positive correlation between both independent variables (parents' attitudes toward the school and parental involvement) and communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. Multiple regression analysis showed a positive predictive relationship between parents' attitudes toward the school and communicating and learning at home, and between parents' attitudes toward parental involvement and communicating, volunteering, and learning at home. Results may be used to improve students' achievement as a result of improved parental involvement.

Einflussfaktoren auf die Thrombozytenregeneration nach Hochdosischemotherapie und autologer Stammzelltransplantation - Untersuchung anhand multipler Regressionsanalysen / Influencing factors for the recovery of the platelet count after high-dose therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation - Study based on multiple regression analyses

Rieger, Reinhard January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The protocol of high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation is an approved and established option in the treatment of haematological malignancies. The developing thrombocytopenia is one of the limiting factors of this therapy, but there are large interindividual differences. The purpose of this study was to identify possible factors of influence for the recovery of the platelet count after high-dose therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation. In order to do this we did a retrospective study that analyses the data of 110 patients, who were treated by the department of medical clinic II of the University Hospital in Würzburg in the years 1994 to 2003. The platelet counts were documented four weeks, three months and six months after the autologous transplantation. Furthermore the duration of time taken for the platelet count of 10.000/µl and 20.000/µl was reviewed. The following parameters were used as potential predictors: age at the time of transplantation, body mass index at the time of transplantation, gender, previous total body irradiation, antibiotics given because of transplantation-associated infections, duration of aplasia, number of transfused CD34+-cells, number of transfused colony forming units (CFUs), number of transfused blood forming units (BFUs), relapse, and the platelet count before high-dose therapy. For the statistical evaluation the Mann-Whitney-U-Test, the Kruskal-Wallis-Test and Spearman´s rank correlation coefficient were used. The quantification of proved correlation was done by multiple regression analyses. The results of the two nonparametric tests and Spearman´s correlation coefficient showed that there was a systematic correlation for the parameters “platelet count before high-dose therapy”, “duration of aplasia” and “previous total body irradiation” to the platelet count after four weeks, three months and six months. There were also significant correlations to the two thresholds “duration until platelet count 10.000/µl” and “duration until platelet count 20.000/µl” for the variables “duration of aplasia”, “antibiotics because of associated infections” and “gender”. The remaining parameters were tested negative. This was surprising under clinical considerations, especially for the numbers of transfused CD34+-cells, CFUs and BFUs. The above mentioned significant, non-random parameters were used for the multiple regression analyses, one analysis for each of the three measurement points and the two thresholds. In the result there were five equations, which allow you to predict the platelet counts at the measurement points and thresholds. You only have to know and insert the duration of aplasia, the gender and the platelet count before high-dose therapy. A possible clinical application of predicted platelet counts could be the identification of risk and high risk groups before the application of high-dose therapy with autologous transplantation. Adjusted therapeutic and diagnostic procedures could improve the safety of the protocol with a possible positive effect on the course of the disease.

Perpetual Peace through Democratic Aid? : Does Democratic Aid Significantly Contribute to Democratic Development among Semi-Democratic States?

Olsson, David January 2009 (has links)

The first purpose of this study is to examine if democratic aid is a statistically and/or substantially significant determinant of democratic development among semi-democratic states. The second purpose is to discuss the effects of democratic aid in light of the theory of ‘democratic peace’, and the debate on whether exogenous or endogenous factors are primary for democratic development. The research question is: how much, if at all, has democratic aid contributed to democratic development among semi-democratic states from 2000 to 2004?

The thesis is delimited to observing the total population of states that were semi-democratic in the year 1999, i.e. 56 countries. Moreover, it only detects the potential impact of democratic aid over one five-year period, namely 2000-2004.

Data from the Freedom House Index (FHI) has been used to distinguish states with semi-democratic regimes from states with other regime-types, and, moreover, to construct two indicators of the dependent variable. The utilized dataset on democratic aid is provided by the Creditor Reporting System (CRS), issued by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Furthermore, in order to assess the effects of democratic aid, a multiple regression model is employed that controls for nine other variables which have been found to have significant impacts on democratic development in relevant previous research.

The conclusion is that democratic aid neither had a statistically nor a substantially significant impact on democratic development of semi-democratic states from 2000 to 2004. Thus, it does not strengthen the ‘exogenous standpoint’ for democratic development, and it does not appear to contribute to an expansion of ‘democratic peace’. However, due to a number of factors, it is acknowledged that more research is required in order to assess the effects of democratic aid more adequately.

Kvicksilversituationen i Stockholms skärgård / The mercury situation in the Stockholm archipelago

Kvicksilverutsläppen har på senare år minskat i omfattning men utsläpp sker fortfarande och det finns ett stort lager i naturen. Perceived Principal Support and Middle School Teacher Burnout

Gaines, Cherie Barnett 01 August 2011 (has links)
Burnout is a tripartite syndrome consisting of the constructs of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced feelings of personal accomplishment (PA) (Azeem & Nazir, 2008; Law, 2010; Yong & Yue, 2007). Teachers in the midst of burnout are in a “state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by long-term involvement in situations that are emotionally demanding” (Harrison, 1996, p. 25). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between middle school teacher burnout and perceived principal support. The combination of the constructs of burnout and principal behaviors (i.e., supportive, directive, and restrictive) provided the theoretical framework for the study. Participants included 282 middle school teachers from 9 schools in East Tennessee. Instruments utilized were the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Educators Survey (MBI-ES), the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire—Revised for Middle Schools (OCDQ-RM); and a researcher‑created demographics questionnaire. Schools were also coded as either rural or non‑rural, and this classification was used as demographic information. Analyses included the calculation of Pearson r correlations and a three-stage hierarchical multiple regression. Of the participants, 43.6% rated themselves as experiencing high levels of EE and 45.4% reported low levels of personal accomplishment. In straight correlations, the EE factors of burnout were significant between gender of teachers, those who taught courses that were tested (i.e., math, reading/language arts, science, and social studies), and those who held higher degrees. For teacher behaviors, those reporting collegial and disengaged behavior had a direct relationship between all factors of burnout, as were principal behaviors categorized as supportive and restrictive. This study, however, focused on the hierarchical multiple regression to determine whether principal behaviors had a greater effect on burnout than did other variables. From the findings, the researcher realized directive principal behavior had no significant effect on any of the factors of burnout; however, those teachers with principals who they perceived as supportive were less likely to exhibit EE or DP. Restrictive principal behavior was the only factor in the regression that was significant for all factors of burnout, indicating that employees of these principals exhibited higher levels of EE and DP and lower levels of PA.

Do Work Values Add to the Prediction of Entrepreneurial Intent Above and Beyond Personality?

Pooya, Arash January 2011 (has links)
This study examined the importance of the Big-Five personality traits and work values for the prediction of entrepreneurial intent. Data were collected from a sample of 261 undergraduate students at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Results of a hierarchical regression analysis revealed that none of the Big-Five personality factors predicted entrepreneurial intent; however, the importance individuals attached to achievement and social-affective work values accounted for 9% of the variance in entrepreneurial intent, above and beyond personality. The results lend support to the argument that entrepreneurship is a cultural phenomenon and that entrepreneurs are ‘made’ as opposed to ‘born’. Consequently, the implications of culture and gender characterization are discussed in relation to entrepreneurial intentions. Finally, a dynamic model of entrepreneurial emergence is proposed and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Lin, Hsu-Hui 21 July 2010 (has links)
According to the change of Taiwan economic structure, Taiwan is gradually moving into an aging society and more and more population in Taiwan will suffer from chronic disease in the near future. Hypertension is not only the first cause of death among the top ten COD in Taiwan, but is also the major source of other four types of disease in the top ten COD list. Market size for hypertension treatment has enormous potential thus all multi-national pharmaceutical companies seize for opportunities in it. Hypertension treatment research and development are always a priority for pharmaceutical companies and medical research centers, however, new compound takes a long time to develop and patent protection period is getting shorter, therefore, how to increase physician acceptance of a new compound becomes the critical success factor of the new launch product for pharmaceutical companies. This research is an attempt to study the relationship between ¡§Current Prescription¡¨, ¡§New Drug Usage¡¨ and ¡§Environmental Factors-Medical Provider¡¨ and ultimately to find the vital factors which would influence the ¡§Willingness¡¨ of the physicians to prescribe product X. One aim of this research is also to understand the potential factors which would affect the physician acceptance of a new mechanism drug. Based on the Multiple Regression Analysis, Analysis of Variance and Factor Analysis, the research results are as follows: 1. The effect of ¡§Current Prescription¡¨ on ¡§Willingness to Prescribe New Product X¡¨ is limited, and factors such as ¡§Satisfaction on Current Prescription¡¨ and ¡§Current Prescription¡¨ do not influence the ¡§Willingness to Prescribe New Product X¡¨. Only the satisfaction of BLOPRESS and PLENDIL and current prescription percentage on ADALOT OROS and CO-DIOVAN show a significant affect. So the research hypothesis H-1 and H1-3 are partially supported. AS far as ¡§Level of Fame¡¨ of the product shows a significant influence on the ¡§Willingness to Prescribe New Product X¡¨, so the research hypothesis H1-2 is fully supported. 2. Relationship between ¡§New Drug Usage¡¨ and ¡§Willingness to Prescribe New Product X¡¨ is not all significant. ¡§External Information¡¨, ¡§Physician Specialty¡¨ and factors a physician will consider when prescribing did not have a large impact on whether the physician will prescribe the new drug or not. Only the familiarity on ¡§Renin system is an import treatment indicator on blood pressure control and organ protection¡¨, ¡§External Information Orientated¡¨, and ¡§Market Follower¡¨ type of physicians and ¡§Will still use broadly to treat, even despite the high cost of new drugs¡¨ and ¡§New product X will always be part of the prescription in combination therapy¡¨ show significant impact. Thus hypothesis H2-1, H2-3 & H2-4 are partial supported. ¡¨Type of Patient¡¨ shows no difference in effect physician¡¦s willingness to prescribe new product X, so the hypothesis H2-2 are not supported. 3. ¡§Level of Fame¡¨ just has partial significance effect to physician¡¦s ¡§Current Prescription¡¨. ¡§Level of fame¡¨ for CCB, ARB and ACEI have significant effect to the physician¡¦s ¡§Current Prescription¡¨, but other drugs like ALPHA BLOCKER, BETA BLOCKER & OTHERS have no effect to the physician¡¦s ¡§Current Prescription¡¨, so the research hypothesis is partially supported. 4. ¡§Environment Factors¡ÐMedical Provider¡¨ has limited effect to physician¡¦s ¡§Current Prescription¡¨. Among all the physician specialties, only Cardiovascular, Nephrology and Meta/Endo physicians show a difference in ¡§Current Prescription¡¨ among all specialties. ¡§Type of Hospital¡¨ shows no effect on ¡§Current Prescription¡¨, thus the research hypothesis is not supported. According to the findings above, pharmaceutical companies should increase call frequency from sales representatives to the physicians; increased call frequency will effectively increase the brand awareness of the new launch products and also to increase the new product prescription rate. Improvement of Sales Training and after sales service can also be a key area for improved for the pharmaceutical companies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency for product promotion. In addition, product efficacy and treatment differentiation messages should also be customized for physicians in different specialties and in different types of hospitals; increased frequency and customized messages will ensure the success of the new product launch.

The Internationalization of Chinese Firms: A Case of IT and Energy Industries

Tsou, Ko-Hsuan 01 August 2011 (has links)
The total amount of FDI ¡]Foreign Direct Investment¡^ in China has increased dramatically in recent years; however, what factors have motivated Chinese firms to invest abroad? Since 2001, China¡¦s foreign exchange reserves have been continuously increasing1, while holding significant FX reserves has pressured the central bank to offset the loss which resulted from RMB appreciation. Moreover, China, where they controlled less strategic asset than the global rivals, taking FDI was also late than developed countries. As a response, Chinese government has implemented the ¡§Going abroad¡¨ policy that foster OFDI which encouraged domestic companies to invest overseas so as to enhance its international competitiveness. In doing so, it is able to address the competitive disadvantage, acquire both tangible and intangible assets by engaging international activities, and in the meantime to sterilize the increase of foreign reserves. In terms of FDI entry mode, China has engaged in different levels of transnational investment. Exporting, OEM, international subcontracting, and joint venture are generally undertaking by Chinese firms, whereas state-owned companies focus on mergers, acquisition and organic expansion. Previous studies into the internationalization have tended to discuss inward FDI, while outward FDI is also important. For the above reason, this study aims at examining both these two parts as well as the internationalization of Chinese firms. Starting from the top 500 enterprises, we will mainly target the energy and IT industry as the basis of analysis. The data collection spans from 2000 to 2009, also include the content analysis .To verify the hypothesis, we apply multiple regression to investigate whether the internationalization of these two sectors have display the correlation between sales revenue, and foreign paten outputs. The empirical results find that: ¡]1¡^ The motivation of IT industry are more inclined to acquire intangible asset and explore new market, whereas the energy industry aims at obtaining natural resources.¡]2¡^ On the respect of entry mode, the incentive of state-owned enterprises is to fulfill the state policy , mainly adopt mergers and acquisitions. and the non-central state-owned and private enterprises relatively focus on organic expansion as well as the M&A. ¡]3¡^ With these two hypotheses, the first one reflects the internationalization is significant to foreign patent outputs and positively related to each other. and second exhibits that all independent variables, including the internationalization ¡]score¡^, patent outputs as well as exporting are all positively significant to the sales revenue. In conclusion, ¡¥¡¥going abroad¡¦¡¦ strategy has positive contributions to the sales revenue.

A Comparison Of Some Robust Regression Techniques

Avci, Ezgi 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Robust regression is a commonly required approach in industrial studies like data mining, quality control and improvement, and finance areas. Among the robust regression methods / Least Median Squares, Least Trimmed Squares, Mregression, MM-method, Least Absolute Deviations, Locally Weighted Scatter Plot Smoothing and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines are compared under contaminated normal distributions with each other and Ordinary Least Squares with respect to the multiple outlier detection performance measures. In this comparison / a simulation study is performed by changing some of the parameters such as outlier density, outlier locations in the x-axis, sample size and number of independent variables. In the comparison of the methods, multiple outlier detection is carried out with respect to the performance measures detection capability, false alarm rate and improved mean square error and ratio of improved mean square error. As a result of this simulation study, the three most competitive methods are compared on an industrial data set with respect to the coefficient of multiple determination and mean square error.
