El Callao cercado es un distrito que ha crecido exponencialmente a nivel poblacional a lo largo de los años. No obstante, la oferta cultural gratuita no fue de la mano con este crecimiento. La biblioteca municipal actual data del año 1943, y desde entonces, no ha sufrido mayor cambio que la adapte a los tiempos presentes. Esta no solo necesitaba de un incremento de área de lectura para atender a la mayor cantidad de población, sino de nuevos usos que la conviertan en un edificio vigente y variado a nivel funcional, características intrínsecas y actuales de la tipología. Era necesario de un edificio flexible espacialmente, que pueda adaptarse a los cambios en el futuro, pero también de un proyecto que, a pesar de su contemporaneidad, se inserte apropiadamente en un marcado contexto histórico. La presente tesis plantea una alternativa de biblioteca municipal actualizada que, desde el uso, es un complemento a la formación y educación en todas sus etapas, y que, desde lo urbano, aporta animación a la zona monumental y al mismo tiempo fortalece sus características morfológicas respetándolas y respetando el patrimonio edificado presente en el terreno, entendiéndolo como parte del proyecto. / The district of Callao, capital of the province of the same name, has had an enormous population growth in recent years. However, the cultural offerings have not increased at a similar rate. The actual municipal library dates from the year 1943, and since then, it hasn’t gone through any transcendent change for it to adapt it to recent times. This building not only needs an increase on square meters, but also on new program that can turn it into a rich mixed-use project. It is necessary for it to be a spatially flexible building that can adapt to future changes, but that is also able, in spite of its contemporaneity, to insert itself as part of a particular historical context. This thesis project presents a potential alternative for a municipal library that, seen from it use, serves as a tool and an aid for education in all of its stages and that, from an urban perspective, generates activity in its immediate context and enhances its morphological characteristics, all while respecting the built heritage that sits on the space, incorporating it as part of the new project. / Tesis

(in English): Work Starting Reader and Information Literacy in the Municipal Library of Prague - library Smíchov and Barrandov aims to describe and compare the work with starting readers and conduct information education starting readers in accordance with the framework educational programs in the older central city of Prague 5-Smíchov and newer housing estate on the outskirts of Prague 5 in Barrandov. Comparator library Smíchov and Barrandov among the branches of the Municipal Library in Prague. From a comparison of these libraries work is based on methodical instructions for working with starting readers, which rely on the conclusions from interviews conducted by teachers and educators catchment primary schools and kindergartens, as well as with parents beginning readers.

The thesis analyses project HISPRA of The Municipal Library of Prague's Digitalisation Department - development of the project, schedule and funding. Other part of thesis presents Digitalisation Department, assumptions of establishment of the department, development, organization and staff, and hardware and software. Furthermore, there is a presentation of an object of digitization. The most important in this part of thesis is presentation of features of the historical documents about Prague. Furthermore, there is an introduction of document's selection strategy. Thesis also presents the various processes of digitization, including access to The Digital Library Kramerius.

While libraries are an actively supported institution in Sweden there is no distinct notion on of what their purpose should be. The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the discourse expressed in the referral responses to the memo-randum of the new library law, regarding the purpose and task of the public libraries in Sweden. The source material for my thesis was the memorandum sent out by the government during the process of introducing the new library law. I chose to use this memorandum and the municipal libraries’ referral responses on this memorandum as my source material. The thesis is based on discourse analytical theory focusing on discursive formations. In this theory, the discourse on a theme of discussion consists of various discourse formations that together form a common discoue. In order to distinguish these discursive formations, it is necessary to study the texts and examine their empirical foundations. In terms of methodology, this means that I related the municipal responses to four different concepts. These concepts were: "activities", "media", "users" and "librarians". Then I analysed these results in connection with previous research in order to define the different discursive formations I could discern. The seven discursive formations identified are: the educational discursive formation, the discursive formation of the library as the meeting place, the discursive formation of the physical activities of the libraries, the inclusive discursive formation, the cultural and information-mediated discursive formation, the democratic discursive for-mation, the discursive formation around the library's organization. These discursive formations are based on the specific themes they focus on. At the same time, two ongoing themes were identified for the discourse as a whole. The first theme is based on an emphasis on user accessibility and inclusion, as well as on equal communication between users and libraries. The second theme is based on an emphasis on equal treatment between different types of media and a negative attitude to the fact that printed literature was being given a special position in the libraries' activities in the memorandum.

(anglicky) The aim of the work is describe and evaluate history and present of Municipal Library of Kutná Hora and outline possible prospects of its development. The author of this diploma thesis describes departments of Library, their local and national services and activities. The work emphasizes signification of Library not only in regional viewpoint.

(in English): The purpose of this diploma thesis deals with library rules (regulations) of Municipal Library of Prague, Jiři Mahen Library in Brno, Helsinki City Library and with a prefigurative library rules for public libraries available on National Library of Czech Republic. The goal of the thesis is to build a model rules structure based on the analysis of the mentioned library rules followed by the definition an optimal content of public library rules. This work further studies library rules of the Municipal Library of Prague for automated branch offices with a focus on their contentual and formal changes during the validity of the library rule in the period from April 20th 1998 to April 12th 2010. Finally, the thesis offers a brief interpretation remaining library rules. The result of the thesis is the contentual definition of the optimal library rules and its structure intended for public libraries.

Thesis Community services of library for middle-aged citizens deals with ways, which transform services of libraries from traditional borrowing services to community services in recent years. Most importantly, it discusses which kind of events are seen as interesting for middle-aged citizens aged 40-55, or more precisely what makes this group visit the library. First part of the thesis deals with definition of basic terms, such as community library, services of libraries, middle-age citizens and lifelong education. Further, it describes examples of new concept of libraries and library services in practice in age, when printed documents are not as necessary for users as they used to be. Next step of the thesis is the analysis of statistic figures, services and events hosted by three chosen libraries - Masaryk public library in Vsetín, town libraries in Nový Jičín and Valašské Meziříčí. The survey of interest preferences of middle-aged users is divided into two parts. First part deals with effects of survey research among users and potential users of libraries in monitored age, where interest preferences and relationship of respondent to library and its services. Public libraries are facing a great challenge to succeed in serving their increasingly diverse communities. This thesis focuses on the acquisition of foreign-language books in public libraries and attempts to address the question whether libraries have special strategies to select and acquire foreign-language books. Particular attention is paid to fiction, the main genre offered by public libraries. To help answer the thesis question, the author compares the acquisition strategies of the Municipal Library of Prague and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin using structured interviews with the key persons responsible for the acquisition of foreign-language books. As a background, the author provides a literature review of foreign-language materials in public libraries and specifically, the acquisition strategy for those materials (i.e. including case studies, research projects and trends from the Czech Republic, the US, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands). This knowledge foundation is considered in the comparison of the two libraries and their acquisition strategies. (in English) The thesis deals with a support of reading with aim effort to offered service, organizing cultural and educational actions in the Municipal Library of Prague. The first part solves theoretical definition and the meaning of reading. There are briefly explained some terms that relate to - reading, the reader, reading socialization, reading literacy, etc. Factors that influence reading process and education for reading are monitored, as well. Furthermore, national representative projects supporting reading primarily in libraries are presented at my work, too. The second part of my work is focused on the Municipal Library of Prague and its role in supporting reading. It describes the library from the view of its mission, the way of financing (funding) and organization structure. The essential part pays attention to the presentation of specialized sections and services, which are provided in the library. It describes different actions supporting reading or providing propagation of the library. Last but not least, the different sections of the Municipal Library of Prague are depicted here with attention to organizing cultural and educational actions, which contributes to supporting reading.
