The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library and Archives project is an on-site repository created in order to provide access to information regarding tribal culture and heritage to local tribal members and researchers. The project filled the need for a space dedicated to material related to the history of local Southern California Native American tribes and information regarding the topics of Archaeology, Anthropology and History. The collection includes: books, manuscripts, documents, audio/visual media, and photographs. Bringing together multimedia sources, the Special Tribal Library allows for the preservation and accessibility of these items through cataloging and digitizing the collection. This method allows for the collection to be available to the public while being able to preserve its integrity through limited handling. In order to facilitate the establishment of the Special Library and Archive, the Malki Museum Special Tribal Library and Archives project teamed up with the Malki Museum’s Director, as well as the Malki Museum’s Tribal Board of Directors. Several weeks of organization, assessment, and collaboration helped prepare the Special Library first for user-friendliness. The final product is the Malki Museum Tribal Special Library which provides tribal members and scholars alike a locality where research can be undertaken and acquired. The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library project helps bring important data within reach to its local community.

By the 1990's many modes of artwork incorporated the constructs of the museum. Art forms including, 'ethnographic art', 'museum interventions', 'museum fictions' and 'artist museums' were considered to be located in similar realms to each other. These investigations into this emerging 'genre' of collection-art have primarily focussed upon the critique of the public museum and its grand-narratives. This thesis will attempt to recognise that the critique of institutional hierarchical systems is now considered integral to much collection art and extends this enquiry to incorporate private collections which examine the narratives of everyday existence. This paper adopts an interdisciplinary approach to material culture and art criticism in examining everyday objects within contemporary collection-art. In this context, this paper argues that: the investigation of collection motivations (fetish, souvenir and system) as metaphor, process and imagery in conjunction with the mimicking of museology methodologies (classification, order and display) is an effective model for interpreting everyday objects within contemporary collection-art. In formulating this argument, this paper examines the ways in which artists emulate museology methodologies in order to convey cultural significance for everyday objects. This is explored in conjunction with the employment of collection motivations by artists as a device to understand elements of human/object relations. In doing so, it contemplates the convergence between the practices of museums and collection-artists. These issues are explored through the visual and analytic investigations of key artist case studies including: Damien Hirst, Sylvie Fleury, Mike Kelley, Christian Boltanski, On Kawara, Luke Roberts, Jason Rhoades, Karsten Bott and Elizabeth Gower. In doing so, this paper argues that the everyday objects of collection-art can represent a broad range of socio/cultural concerns, so delineating a closer relationship between collection-art and material culture.

<p>The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how museums, seen as heterotopic places where time and space act simultaneously, can, with the help of museum educators and guides, integrate the foreign citizens in Sweden. The analysis is done with the help of three institutions: The Vasa Museum, the Royal Armory and The Great Synagogue in Stockholm.</p><p>The author of the thesis argues that recruiting trained personnel with foreign roots by museums would help significantly in the creation of a sense of collective identity and belonging among those citizens who are just adapting to the country. Through the use of Swedish, in conjunction with their mother tongue, as well as analogies, an important contribution can be attained in their integration.</p><p>In this work, concepts such as the accent, are treated in a categorical manner, as the author, with the assistance of other researchers, concluded that the accent should not influence the perception of the intellectual and work capability of a professional museum educator/guide.</p><p>History represents another key element in this thesis, as it discusses the way to find a new narrative form to channel history and refer to it, thus sharing historical roots with these new immigrants in Sweden.</p>

The foundation of this study is built on the school curriculum and five concepts which Ann Zetterqvist identifies in her research as central and necessary for understanding evolution. Research indicates that teaching the theory of evolution is a challenge for teachers and also emphasizes the importance of internal and external support. I propose that GNM is valuable for teaching evolution. The criteria for the selection of candidates are college teachers who have used the museum during the last two years to teach evolution. The study is based on semi-structured interviews completed with questionnaires. Research reveals that without a conscious educational policy the museums pedagogic message may not reach the visitor. Research also shows that it is very important that museums school programme is based on the national curriculum. Results from previous research reveal that students have difficulty in reaching the curricular goals concerning evolution.The results from this study show that teachers had not consciously followed the curriculum when planning their visit, their subject request is however clearly applicable to the curriculum. The teachers interviewed clearly value GNM as a place to teach the theory of evolution, but request certain didactic elements and teacher guides to motivate teaching without the aid of a museum teacher. This study results in a number of didactic elements based upon the teachers and museum teachers' requests.</p>

This essay is a case study based on two sources of empirical data, qualitative interviews and responses from a questionnaire, which examines upper secondary school students’ attitudes to history teaching in a museum context. The students’ answers are further analyzed in relation to the concept of historical consciousness. Thus, history teaching in the museum, from a student perspective, and the students’ capacity of expressing a historical consciousness in their answers, constitute the core of this essay. The motive for a case study like this, is the emphasis of historical consciousness in the course syllabus as well as the emphasis of cooperation between different educational institutions in the goverment’s goals of cultural politics. My study shows, that a majority of the students appreciate the museum as a learning context, they define it as an entertaining but also as an informative, involving and including milieu. The study further shows, that the students have difficulties expressing a historical consciousness, but also the complexity of the concept itself and the problems to identify and “measure” it. My conclusion is, that in order to stimulate an interest and understanding for the history subject – and perhaps even a historical consciousness – it is important that history as a school subject, is not confined within the four walls of a classroom, but is learnt and experienced through and within the center of our daily lifes.

Das Konzept der dynamischen Fähigkeiten, das der Forschung zur Privatwirtschaft entspringt, stellt die Frage wie Unternehmen um ihre Ressourcen optimal nutzen zu können, Fähigkeiten entwickeln, durch die sie in der Lage sind, sich stetig zu verbessern. Da sich auch im öffentlichen Sektor die Frage nach einer verbesserten Nutzung und Einsetzung der zur Verfügung stehenden Potentiale stellt, ist es Ziel dieser Arbeit das Konzept der dynamischen Fähigkeiten auf den öffentlichen Sektor und hierein den Untersuchungsgegenstand Museum anzuwenden. Somit werden mithilfe der Durchführung einer explorativen Fallstudie dynamische Fähigkeiten und deren Parameter untersucht und identifiziert. Hierzu wird zuerst das der Arbeit zugrundeliegende theoretische Verständnis des Konzepts dargelegt um darauf aufbauend anhand narrativer Interviews mit Mitarbeitern des Jüdischen Museums Berlin im empirischen Teil der Arbeit das Konstrukt auf den Untersuchungsgegenstand anzuwenden. Durch den somit erlangten detaillierten Einblick können dynamische Fähigkeiten und Faktoren, die sich auf diese auswirken, identifiziert werden. / The dynamic capabilities perspective based on private sector research poses the question how firms can develop capabilities to use and apply their resources in an optimal way to improve business steadily. In the public sector the question concerning the resource configuration of a firm is also enquired about the improvement in usage of internal potential. Therefore the aim of this paper is to transfer the concept of dynamic capabilities to the public sector, in that case with museums as the object of investigation. Hence dynamic capabilities and their parameters are analysed and identified by the use of an explorative case study. Due to that the theoretical background is defined in order to analyse interviews with stuff members of the Jewish Museum Berlin. This gains detailed insights and makes an identification of dynamic capabilities and their parameters possible.

During the nineteenth century, museums dedicated to the collection, preservation, and display of human anatomy became familiar institutions in America and Europe. The anatomical museum operated under one of two guises: popular museums run as commercial establishments, or medical museums attached to a professional medical society or college. Over the course of the century, the medical establishment sought to cement its authority over anatomy by legitimating its expertise through specialized training. Doctors criticized commercial anatomical museums, which were eventually closed under accusations of obscenity, yet there was considerable overlap in the types of objects on display at both museums. This paper examines how the medical museum was permitted to supersede its commercial cousin and explores the exhibitionary narratives at the sites of both types of institutions.
