Vliv genderu na profesionální výběr zpráv: Posuzují editorky zpravodajskou hodnotu událostí jinak než editoři? Existují "ženské" a "mužské" preference zpravodajských hodnot? / Gender Influence on Professional News Selection: DO Female Editors Judge News Value of Events Differently Than Male Editors? Are There "Female" and "Male" Preferences of News Values_

Erwerthová, Jana January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to find an answer to the question if gender influences news production and news selection. It is hypothesized that in national daily broadsheet newspapers, the editor's gender has no influence on the professional behaviour and therefore editors' preferences of topics and news values should be identical. The theoretical part deals with different approaches to the topic of gender influence on the news production, describes the situation and stereotyping of female journalists and strategies they choose to deal with it. Next it briefly recapitulates the main news values theories and dichotomy of "hard" and "soft" news. The research part describes a study of gender influence on decision-making processes during news selection in Czech national daily broadsheet newspapers. The statistical methods used herein include the Student's T-test, Z-test and ANOVA. The statistics show no significant differences between male and female editors in consideration of news topic importance (to the reader), news values assessment or the selection of printable news. All the editors in the researched respondent population tend to favor "hard" news and to consider the same values and topics important in the same manner regardless of their gender. Despite slight differences in individual topics, this...

“Farmers need illegal immigrants ‘to pick the crops’” : Examining News Values on immigration Discourse in CNN and Fox News

Salameh, Admiral January 2023 (has links)
Media outlets play a pivotal role in the shaping of society's perception on different matters. The research of this thesis consists of 20 articles in total from two of the larger media outlets in the US, CNN and Fox News. Each dataset contains 10 articles consisting of 5269 words, for the former, and 4516 words, for the latter. The analysis categorized how CNN and Fox News utilize linguistic devices when constructing newsworthiness in their depiction on immigration with news values. Both CNN and Fox News exhibited variations in the utilization of news values. CNN emphasized personal narratives, utilizing names and locations, while Fox News leaned towards highlighting elite figures and frequently labeling immigrants as "illegal." These differences in narrative strategies could potentially shape public perceptions of immigration, influencing attitudes and policy discussions. Understanding these media portrayals is critical in comprehending how news influences societal views on this topic and highlights the importance of diverse and balanced media representation in discussions on immigration.

[en] RECIRCULATION AND REMIXING OF NEWS IN LGBT ACTIVISM: AN ANALYSIS OF THE NEWSPAPER GAVE IN THE WEEK / [pt] RECIRCULAÇÃO E REMIXAGEM DE NOTÍCIA NO ATIVISMO LGBT: UMA ANÁLISE DO JORNAL DEU NA SEMANA

CARLYLE SANTOS JUNIOR 14 November 2019 (has links)
[en] Discussions on issues of sexual orientation and gender identity have been put in the public arena to understand behaviors, the relationship with the body, the yearnings and the difficulties faced by gays, lesbians, transvestites, transsexuals and transgender (LGBT) people in society Brazilian. They are individuals who challenge and destabilize the prevailing order based on heteronormativity and the male and female binomial, and, from this, seek recognition to guarantee rights and the end of numerous violations. As a result, the journalistic narratives seek to capture with greater amplitude and empathy the human, political and public character of themes related to sexual and gender diversity. This dissertation looks at the Deu na Semana section, housed in the YouTube channel Põe na Roda. This is a news video on the video platform that gathers news about the LGBT population. In this sense, we seek to understand how the internet and social networks have reconfigured the ways of production, circulation and recirculation of news bringing new actors in a context of participatory and activist journalism. And, under the light of journalism theories, such as Gatekeeping (WHITE, 1950) and Newsmaking (TUCHMAN, 1978), one investigates how news selection, articulated to the seizure of noticiability criteria of the major press, helps to build a new reality of the LGBT population from the frameworks and cuts of themes related to the conquest of rights, representativeness, fight against homophobia and support for the LGBT cause.

The aim has been to answer the following questions:- What amount of the news coverage in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter concern the metropolitan areas compared to the provincial areas, and how do these two newspapers differ in the news covering of these areas?- Is there a difference in the news articles size and content, depending on weather they concern the metropolitan or the provincial areas?- How has the balance between news concerning metropolitan and provincial areas changed over the recent 20 years? The theories used in this study are News values, the media commercialization and Popular Journalism, and The Agenda Setting Theory. “E che diavolo è preso agli italiani?” – Il quadro del sistema politico italiano nella stampa di qualità tedesca / "Und welcher Teufel reitet die Italiener?": Das Bild des politischen Systems Italiens in der deutschen Qualitätspresse / “Are the Italians leaged with the devil?” - The image of Italy´s political system in Germans quality press

HENSCHEL, JAN 14 February 2011 (has links)
In the ongoing discourse about Italy's political image in Germany, the dissertation adds to the discussion the analysis of the modalities about how the present-day image of Italy's political system is handled in the German media during the so-called “Second Republic”. More than the illustration of Italy´s political institutions, parties and leader images in German media, the paper consults theories of gatekeeping, news bias, news values, and framing handles with the origins of the perception and in particular with the communication processes that reduce the accuracy in political foreign news. The analysis of journalist's daily work through 90 interviews / questionnaires and a content analysis of 1.024 newspaper articles shows that the media image of Italy's political system is not so much characterized as permanently negative as it is a never-ending personalization of Italy's political leaders. Finally, the dissertation shows the political orientation of newspapers in contrast to national news doesn't significantly influence foreign news. Moreover it was demonstrated the processes of perception and communication that take place in foreign news is determinant. Under these restrictions the correspondents are able to use the scope of development for writing articles and judging the events and the characters of Italy's political system.

Covid-19 & Swedish exceptionalism : A critical qualitative content analysis on the international print media discourses of Sweden’s Covid-19 strategy / Covid-19 & Svensk exceptionalism : En kritisk kvalitativ innehållsanalys av den internationella tryckmedia diskursen om Sveriges Covid-19-strategi

Kippersluis, Rianne January 2022 (has links)
In 2020, the year the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the Swedish Covid-19 response differed radically from the general policy of total lockdown and strict enforcement of Covid-measures and regulations recommended by the WHO. Instead, Sweden strove early on to achieve herd immunity, with no mandatory measures to limit numbers in shopping malls, buses, and other public events, nor mask requirements. Hence, during the height of the pandemic, Swedish Covid-19 policy was a highly debated issue in the international media, within academia and the World Health Organization. The aim of this study is to examine the international media discourse on the Swedish Covid-19 strategy in the international print media. The focus has been on newspapers from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The research has been done by investigating how Sweden’s Covid-19 strategy is discursively constructed, through major themes and sub-themes that have emerged. Additionally, the differences in discourse between Dutch, English and American media have been explored. As well as the use of language, ideologies, and linguistic devices within the international discourse have been investigated. A total of 178 articles, published between the period of 1 January 2020 until 6 February 2022, have been collected and analyzed. This study uses Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) as main method and has been inspired by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). A coding frame has inductively been created, by having used a sample of 20 newspaper articles in a pilot study. The software of NVivo has been used for the coding process. The major themes that emerged from my analyses of media discourses are: Anders Tegnell, Strategy, Trust and Image of Sweden and Swedes. My study found that media discourses on the Swedish Covid-19 policy are not positive. Rather these tend to be negative or at best neutral. Images of Sweden tend to vary in tandem with increase or decreases of Covid-19 infections and/or deaths. As the Swedish strategy became more or less aligned with the ‘norm’ of the WHO, the coverage of Sweden in media declined and lost its newsworthiness.
