Selecting and Prioritizing Projects : A study on Intergovernmental and Non-profit Organizations

Nowadays, organizations are shifting towards project-based management strategies in order to implement more flexible structures that allow them to respond and compete in complex business environments. In this way, project management has been regarded as a valuable competence, providing the organization and its management teams the opportunity to adapt the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to meet project requirements as well as organizational goals. Among the wide array of decisions project managers have to evaluate project selection (PS) and project prioritization (PP) are crucial in order to maximize stakeholder’s value through the effective management and allocation of resources to projects that are in alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives. Moreover, the integration of management techniques, guidelines and practices has also become a necessity for intergovernmental (IGOs) and non-profit organizations (NPOs), especially because they do not possess a conventional bottom line and in most instances, their main goal is rarely profit maximization. Although the main objective of operations of IGOs and NPOs is also success, this is difficult to be defined and evaluated. As a matter of fact, studies related to project management in IGOs and NPOs argue that the literature available has ignored the public good sector to a great extent, since the majority of the portfolio management tools available are tailored for commercial and for-profit organizations (FPOs). Consequently, this study explores the project portfolio management (PPM) process in intergovernmental and non-profit organizations focusing specifically on the decision-making process regarding project selection and prioritization. It provides an understanding of the main criteria these organizations take into consideration when selecting and prioritizing projects and the impact these methodologies have in terms of achieving project and organizational success. In addition, it examines the role of the project management office (PMO) and individual project managers based on their influence on the decisions concerning project selection and prioritization, as well as project success and organizational success. The key findings of this study confirm the relevance of the priorities determined by the main stakeholders as one of the principal criteria for project selection, followed by the allocation of funding and resources and the need for strategic alignment. Furthermore, in terms of determining a ranking among the selection criteria, this study has found that within these organizations all the different requirements encompassed in the selection process should be treated as equal. Additionally, it has been possible to determine that for intergovernmental and non-profit organizations the project selection and project prioritization phases are not isolated from one another; and are in fact treated as on single criteria. Conversely, the findings of this study contradict the proposition that the project management office is highly influential in the decision-making process of IGOs and IGOs; however, it emphasizes the role of the project manager in project and organizational success as highly valuable since they possess the hard and soft project management skills that increase the chances to achieve the organizational goals.

Aristotle on social media? : Investigating non-profit organizations’ usage of persuasive language in their posts on Twitter and Facebook

This study investigates how non-profit organizations market their organizations and persuades their audience on two different social media platforms. The aim is to examine four non-profit organizations’ use of persuasive language in their Facebook and Twitter posts.  in their Facebook and Twitter posts on their social media pages. The aim is to understand if, how and what linguistic means was are used in the posts through Aristotle’s triangle of rhetoric. His theory consists of the three appeals: ethos, logos and pathos. These three appeals all holds a number of individual features.  with a perspective from classic rhetoric, namely Aristotle’s triangle of rhetoric. The persuasion was examined using Aristotle’s triangle of rhetoric and its appeals ethos, logos, and pathos. The research was carried out by classifying the posts by the three appeals and their features. These defined what linguistic means were used and how. All three appeals are equally important when persuading an audience  public through a text as they are necessary to raise an understanding and interest to the text’s focus. Aristotle argued that when including all three appeals, the text has reached its full extent potential of persuasion. The appeals have their unique attributes and may also persuade when used individually. The An author’s credibility and trust applies to the appeal ethos, logic and reasoning in a of the text applies to logos, and a text that moves its reader’s emotions applies to pathos. The research resulted that aWhether a text’s length matters for its persuasion through a comparison of  the two social media platformshas also been examined through comparing the two social media platformsw. Non-profit organizations do not strive for any profit which make it a challenge for them how to market persuade their organization audience in order and actually be able to be able to continue their work. Many of the posts researched included the appeal pathos which aim mainly to evoke emotions with the readers.

This thesis deals with the efficiency of the measures, which are implemented within the projects supported by the European Social Fund and are aimed at the endangered groups of parents (mostly women) on the labour market. The theoretical part introduces the concept of labour market segmentation, theory of human and social capital and finally outlines labour market policies within the framework of the EU and the Czech Republic. Empirical research uses techniques of interviews and a questionnaire in order to evaluate the implementation of the measures and targeting of the funds towards the needs of this specific group of women which is under a long term threat on the labour market. The contribution of this thesis is primarily in a detailed study on the efficiency of the system of subsidies in one part of the support from the ESF from the perspective of non-profit organizations. The thesis deals with the evaluation of the quality of social services, particularly services Sheltered Housing. For this evaluation of quality were selected four non-profit organizations focused on service housing in the region of South Bohemia. In this thesis we determined comparative areas according to the criteria of qualitative standards of social welfare, in accordance with those standards organizations are compared mutually and evaluated. For comparison of those organizations, focusing on social services, I have used the benchmarking method. The aim of the thesis is,on the basis of the lesson learned in comparing those organizations, identify potential improvements of provided social welfare and processing specific proposals and recommendations. These recommendations, can be used by those organizations to improve and enhance the quality of social services.

Pracovní rehabilitace a podporované zaměstnávání osob se zdravotním postižením v ČR / Vocational rehabilitation and supported employment of people with disabilities in the Czech Republic

The thesis is focused on the position of people with disabilities on the labour market in the Czech Republic, on the received arrangements for support of their employment and on their possibilities to get a job. The first part deals with characteristics of the present situation of disabled people on the labour market and with specification of various factors, which can influence their employment. The next part is focused on the supported employment service, which helps disadvantaged people on the labour market, especially people with disabilities, on the principles and advantages of this service and also on the comparison of the Czech experiences with experiences of the chosen European union countries. Only the nongovernmental non-profit organizations so far offer the supported employment service in the Czech Republic and that is why the following part discusses the topic of this organizations and their financing, especially funding from EU structural funds, which are the most important source of money for most of the mentioned organizations. The final part deals with the incentives, which can lead employers to employ the person with disability.

Theoretical part generally characterizes non-profit organizations and non-profit sector in the Czech Republic. First part outlines brief historical context, legal regulations in the Czech Republic, their operation, classification and fundraising. Second part describes public relations in non-profit sector, instruments of this communication and how to make this communication as effective as possible. Empirical part demonstrates these theoretical findings on examples of two particular non-profit organizations operating in the sphere of health care and social-service work. These two non-profit organizations are being compared in reference to public relations and public awareness about these organizations activity. Emphasis is laid not only on communication methods but especially on ethic aspect of this communication. Diploma thesis objective is to evaluate position of two non-profit organizations in terms of promotion and public relations. Conclusion summarizes ascertained facts.

Qualité et contrôle dans les services : le cas des services à la personne / Quality and Control in the Service Sector : The Case of Home-based Services

Les activités de services à la personne incarnent un important potentiel de création d’emplois et de réponse à des besoins sociaux. Elles présentent comme principales caractéristiques une forte dimension relationnelle qui influence leur qualité, ainsi qu’une distance spatiale qui complique le contrôle de cette qualité. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’analyser les pratiques de contrôle de la qualité des organismes offreurs, ainsi que les représentations des différents acteurs en matière de qualité de service.L’approche qualitative retenue donne lieu à la réalisation de deux études empiriques, l’une concernant les services à destination de personnes dépendantes (SAD), l’autre ceux à destination des autres publics (SAP). Au total, 38 entretiens sont réalisés auprès de dirigeants et responsables qualité d’organismes offreurs, 169 avis de bénéficiaires et 318 avis d’intervenants sont collectés sur Internet, ce dispositif étant complété par une phase d’observation participante. Les données recueillies font l’objet d’une analyse de contenu.Ces études permettent d’identifier les critères de qualité perçue des bénéficiaires et des intervenants, trois approches de la qualité des organismes offreurs, sept étapes du processus de production associées aux trois phases du processus de contrôle, les objectifs assignés ainsi que les mécanismes de contrôle mobilisés lors de ces étapes. Les résultats montrent l’influence du régime juridique retenu (prestataire ou mandataire) sur les pratiques de contrôle de la qualité. Ils soulignent également la nécessaire cohérence entre la représentation de la qualité du manager et les mécanismes de contrôle mobilisés pour influencer la qualité. / Home-based service activities embody a significant potential for employment creation and solutions to social needs. Their main characteristics include a strong relational dimension that affects their quality and a spatial distance that complicates the control of service quality. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the quality control practices of home-based service organizations and the representations that actors have of service quality.On the empirical side, the qualitative approach is based on two studies, one regarding services to dependent people (SAD), the other concerning services to other people (SAP). 38 interviews are carried-out with managing directors and quality managers, 169 recommendations from consumers and 318 recommendations from contact-employees are collected on the Internet (electronic word-of-mouth), the methodology being completed with participant-observation. The data collected are subject to a content analysis.The empirical studies enable to identify the perceived-quality factors used by consumers and contact-employees, seven steps of the production process being associated to the three control process steps, as well as the goals set and the control mechanisms used at each step. The results show the influence of the legal framework chosen by the service organization (service provider versus authorised representative) on service quality control practices. They also emphasize the necessary coherence between the manager’s representation of service quality and the control mechanisms used to influence this quality.

The aim of this thesis is to find out the extent to which non-profit organizations (NGOs) specialized on Roma inclusion react to their clients' needs. The thesis works with qualitative research method that is based on interviews with NGOs representatives and field researchers, and a questionnaire filled by Roma clients. The research is focused on four main factors which are: communication with Roma clients, efficiency efforts, dependence on funding requirements, and a support of intercultural meetings between Roma people and the majority. According to the results of the analysis there are different strategies amongst the organizations but all of them try to work in compliance with the needs of their clients. The experience of the interviewed field researchers and Roma clients prove that the NGOs' activities are sufficient and correspond with the real needs of their Roma clients to great extent. The thesis is focused on impacts of the program World of Difference on the relationship of its graduates to the organizations of the civil sector. This paper consists of three main parts. The first one describes the theoretical definitions of the concepts connected with civil sector, organizations of the civil sector, business sector, cooperation between the sectors, values and motivation of the employees in the civil sector and management of Human Resources in civil sector. The second part is focused on methodology of the research, data analysis and the activities of the Vodafone Foundation and the program World of Difference. There are presented the outcomes of the research in the last part. The research is focused on the graduates of the program World of Difference and the fact if they remain in the civil sector after finishing the program. The research is focused on the specifics which they had to meet during the program and if they changed their opinion about the civil sector. According to the research questions, I chose the qualitative research and used methods of semi-structured in-depth interviews. This thesis covers the topic of Non-profit Managers' Education in the Czech Republic. The first theoretical part concentrates on the brief introduction of the non-profit sector, continues with the core management theories, managers' tasks and competencies, and introduces the primary differences between non-profit and profit organizations. It continues with short history of managers' education with concentration in non-profit sector. The first part closes with educational theories, the design of specialized study programs and opinions of current managers on needs of non-profit sector. The second part includes methodology with the main goals, research questions and their presumptions, and also the concrete chosen method and its description. The last part of the thesis is the empirical research which processes data from the questionnaire survey, by which are answered the research questions and fulfilled goals of the thesis.
