Toward a Pedagogy of Visual Communication as Critical Practice in Professional and Technical Communication

This project, Toward a Pedagogy of Visual Communication as Critical Practice in Professional and Technical Communication, examines the teaching of visual communication in undergraduate professional and technical communication courses. Through an analysis of scholarship, textbooks, and a service-learning project as a case study, I argue that a situated visual communication pedagogy that integrates both analysis and reflection throughout the visual production and design process can better allow students to understand the ways in which the visual participates within larger social and cultural contexts. This understanding helps students develop abilities to potentially transform visual discourses emphasizing that all visual documents and texts, including the ones they produce, participate in shaping the ways in which meaning is made. By integrating visual communication and design into service-learning and other civic engagement pedagogies in the professional and technical communication classroom, instructors and students can begin to interrogate the view that professional and technical communication is a neutral, objective practice concerned only with prescriptive adherence to forms, conventions, workplace efficiency, and corporate success. Thus, in addition to helping students develop as communicators and thinkers, integrating visual communication into service-learning and throughout the duration of a course allows students to explore the civic dimensions of professional and technical communication, situating them as engaged designers and active members of their communities.

Så gör vi gott för Norrland - : En kvalitativ studie av Norrmejeriers visuella kommunikation / Contribute to the north of Sweden : A study of Norrmejerier's visual communicaiton

In a time where information overload is a fact, well formulated messages is required and communication is a big contributing element for building strong brands. In the north of Sweden, Norrmejerier is one of the big actors with dominance on the dairy factor market. Through making milk products that lands in the consumers refridgerators, they are not only working for economical interest but also for improving the nature of the north of Sweden.   Through visual communication, Norrmejerier shows the consumers a beneficial view of the north of Sweden which corresponds to the populations own impression of their part of the country. This contributes to a feeling of belonging that makes strong and loyal consuments. The feeling of belonging is also reflected in Norrmejeriers commercial movies, that uses the consumers conscience to make costumers.   By two group interviews and a semiotic analysis of Norrmejeriers commercial movies, this study aims to examine how Norrmejerier uses qualities of the north of Sweden when building their brand. The results shows that the consumers opinion of Norrmejerier is positive, and the participants of the group interview sees Norrmejerier as a symbol for the north of Sweden. The commercials makes the consumers feel proud of their heritage. Many of the participants in the group interview feel that the north of Sweden is seperated from the rest of the country, which contributes to the desire of doing everything on their own. The feeling of belonging is one of the factors that Norrmejerier is a strong brand in the north of Sweden. / I en tid då informationsflödet ständigt ökar ställs högre krav på bra utformade budskap, och kommunikation blir en bidragade faktor till ett lyckat varumärkesarbete. I norra Sverige är Norrmejerier en stor aktör, som genom att producera mjölk som hamnar i konsumenternas kylskåp inte bara verkar för kommersiella intressen utan också för hela Norrlands levande landsbygd.   Genom visuella bilder förmedlar Norrmejerier en syn på Norrland som stämmer överens med norrlänningarnas egna bild av hembygden. Detta skapar en känsla av gemenskap och tillhörighet hos konsumenterna, vilket bidrar till stor köplojalitet. Denna gemenskapskänsla beror till stor del på Norrmejeriers reklamfilmer, som anspelar på en samvetsaspekt hos mottagarna som genom att välja norrländska produkter gör gott för Norrland.   Genom två fokusgruppsintervjuer och en semiotisk bildanalys på tre av Norrmejeriers reklamfilmer syftar denna studie till att undersöka hur Norrmejerier använder sig av norrländskhet i sitt varumärkesbyggande. Resultatet visar att konsumenternas uppfattning om Norrmejerier är positiv, och deltagarna i fokusgruppsintervjuerna ser Norrmejerier som en symbol för Norrland. Reklamfilmerna visar en fördelaktig bild av Norrland som gör att konsumeterna känner sig stolta över sin hembygd, trots att det många gånger är en region som upplevs som frånkopplad från övriga Sverige. Känslan av utanförskap kan vara en av de bidragande faktorerna som gör att Norrmejeriers konsumenter är märket troget, som ett uttryck för en önskan om att klara sig själva oberoende av resten av landet.

The use of visual mental imagery in new product design

This dissertation seeks to advance our understanding of how marketing principles can be used to improve the process of new product design. Specifically, it examines the potential of a specific cognitive process, visual mental imagery, as a tool to help designers maximize the appeal of new products in the eyes of their customers. A conceptual framework is presented that describes a process through which visual mental imagery might influence the customer appeal of a design output. This is followed by two experiments which test the hypotheses that flow from this model. The experiments manipulate both the type of visual imagery utilized, and the incorporation of the customer in the imagery invoked (content of the imagery), in order to examine their effects on the usefulness, originality, and customer appeal of the resulting design. Consistent with the proposed framework and its hypotheses, visualization of the customer, as part of the imagery process, proved to enhance design usefulness when this imagery was imagination-based, but not when it was memory-based. Furthermore, use of imagination-based imagery resulted in more original designs than pure memory-based imagery. Finally, and most importantly, the use of customer visualization in combination with imagination-based imagery led to designs that were significantly more appealing to the customer. An analysis of covariance subsequently revealed that this improvement in customer appeal was mediated both by the perceived usefulness of the design, and by its degree of originality. The dissertation concludes with the integration of the experimental findings, and a discussion of the potential of visual imagery as a tool in the new product design process.

Interactive behaviour in pigeons: Visual display interactions as a model for visual communication

Four experiments are presented that explore social interactivity in a visually communicating species: the pigeon, Columba livia. A closed-loop teleprompter system was used to isolate, control and manipulate social contingency in a natural courtship interaction. Experiment 1 tested different ways to measure pigeon behaviour and developed an automatic method for measuring the pigeon’s circle walking display using motion energy analysis. In Experiment, 2 the subject’s courtship behaviour towards the video image of an opposite sex partner streamed live (Live), was compared with their behaviour towards a pre-recorded video image of the same partner (Playback). The only difference between the Live and Playback condition was the presence or absence of social contingency. The results showed that pigeons behaved interactively: their behaviour was determined, in part, by the social contingencies between visual signals. To investigate what types of social contingencies are behaviourally relevant, the effects of the partner’s facing direction and the timing of social contingencies on behaviour were investigated in Experiment 3 and 4, respectively. To manipulate partner facing direction, the camera was rotated so that the partner appears to be courting 90° away from the subject. To manipulate social timing, three time delays, 1, 3 and 9s, were implemented within the closed-circuit communication. In Experiment 4, the context-specificity of interactive behaviour was also investigated by testing behavioural sensitivity to social contingency and timing in both opposite sex and same sex social interactions. The results showed that the partner’s facing direction did not significantly influence behaviour, whereas the timing of social contingencies had a significant impact on behaviour: in courtship only. These findings suggest that temporal relations between display bouts in courtship are behaviourally relevant. A post hoc analysis was then used to evaluate the behavioural relevance of two social contingencies in particular: partner responsiveness and simultaneous display. The results showed that females may be sensitive to the male responsiveness in courtship. Also, simultaneous display appeared to create a perceptual interaction which acted to potentiate the courtship dynamic. This research is a qualitative study of a short project set up to explore the uses of a visual arts-based approach for addressing HIV and AIDS through teacher development. It was undertaken at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in the face of the HIV and AIDS pandemic. It responds to the suggestions that teachers need to explore their own understanding, attitudes and perceptions of the disease if they are to deal confidently with the demands it places on them as educators in schools. Thirteen preservice teachers, who had enrolled in a guidance course, used photographs and drawing to capture their views of HIV and AIDS and to construct messages for their peers. Methods for the approach were adapted from the work of Ewald and Lightfoot (2001) and from Wang’s (1999) photo-voice. A visual arts-based approach was chosen for its potential to simultaneously engage the mind, body and emotions (Weber & Mitchell, 2004). Drawing on the conceptual work of Banks (2001), Hall (1997) and Fairclough (1995), the photo texts were then analysed by the researcher who saw them as socially and culturally embedded constructions and was interested in how they were affected by and could have an impact on culture and social discourses. Reflections on the photo texts and their associated processes by both the researcher and pre-service teachers lead to suggestions as to the pedagogic possibilities of using a visual arts-based approach in education to address HIV and AIDS. The thesis concludes with discussion of what a visual arts-based approach can contribute to HIV and AIDS in teacher education and comments on the challenges and limitations of such an approach. / Thesis (PhD.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.

In this creative project, I propose that comics can be used fruitfully to introduce undergraduates to the image-word dynamic, helping them become betters critics, more thoughtful consumers, and more effective creators of images. In addition, I argue that such a course of study be housed in an undergraduate rhetoric and composition major. Therefore, this project accomplishes three goals: it explores the rhetorical function of comics; second, it justifies the inclusion of comics in an undergraduate rhetoric-composition program; and, third, it provides a master syllabus for four classes that would provide the experience necessary to students wishing to study visual, verbal, and visual-verbal rhetorics. / Department of English

Photojournalism in Quebec's newspapers is studied through the perspective of the essential contribution played by communication in an exercise of democracy. Inspired by some deconstructionist sociological methods, the theoretical framework is based on hegemony and social discourse. A review of the literature unveils the major cognitive models which deal with photojournalism and comments the context of information in Quebec. / A computerized and hermeneutic analysis coupled with a review of the interaction of the image with the page support the inferences. Not only some disturbing disparities are shown in the visual representation, but those disparities appear to be submitted to the current doxic rules. Finally, a synthesis establishes the hegemonical convergences which support those values and presents the ideological activities of photojournalism. The researcher draws his conclusion from the current process of information and is worried of its impact on the capacity of self-governing.

On processing line graphs: understanding aging and the role of spatial and verbal resources

The objective of this research is to explore high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) using silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) for wireless digital receiver applications. The stringent requirements of ADCs for the high-performance next-generation wireless digital receiver include (1) low power, (2) low cost, (3) wide input signal bandwidth, (4) high sampling rate, and (5) medium to high resolution. The proposed research achieves the objective by implementing high-performance ADC's key building blocks and integrating these building blocks into a complete sigma-delta analog-to-digital modulator that satisfies the demanding specifications of next-generation wireless digital receiver applications. The scope of this research is divided into two main parts: (1) high-performance key building blocks of the ADC, and (2) high-speed sigma-delta analog-to-digital modulator. The research on ADC's building blocks includes the design of two high-speed track-and-hold amplifiers (THA) and two wide-bandwidth comparators operating at the sampling rate > 10 GS/sec with satisfying resolution. The research on high-speed sigma-delta analog-to-digital modulator includes the design and experimental characterization of a high-speed second-order low-pass sigma-delta modulator, which can operate with a sampling rate up to 20 GS/sec and with a medium resolution. The research is envisioned to demonstrate that the SiGe HBT technology is an ideal platform for the design of high-speed ADCs.

This investigation’s origin is one born of pragmatism. It seeks to improve the teaching and learning of illustration, a visual communication design discipline. The specific focus is text adaptation and the process involved in interpreting the written word into a visual image. Common characteristics of poor interpretation, identified after many years of teaching illustration, are the creation of images which are either based on relatively insignificant details from a text, or so removed from a text’s theme, that decoding an image’s intended meaning becomes extremely difficult. This study therefore seeks to provide insight into the process of interpreting written text into an illustration and offer some suggestions as to how novice illustration students can improve their skills in this process. The chosen methodology of this study is action research, and within a constructivistinterpretivist framework, work carried out with three groups of novice students, during three linked cycles of investigation has been analysed. Two separate, but linked learning strategies were developed incrementally. These can be thought of as thinking tools. The first one relates to comprehension of text while the second strategy focuses on analogical reasoning as an idea generation method. The data suggests that these learning strategies were successful, allowing students to develop more awareness of their design process and also create concepts which captured the essence of a text. This suggests that, while designing does involve tacit, intuitive thought, explicit methods of thinking can also assist design creativity. Much of the literature on design suggests that a paradigm shift is taking place within the field, in education as well as design practice. One of the characteristics of this change is a call for design educators to develop an epistemology of what constitutes design knowledge. This thesis is an addition to that ongoing search for understanding.
