The relationship between visual and verbal codes of visual rhetoric in a sequential art settingVan der Merwe, Ernest 11 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech.) - Dept. of Visual Arts and Design, Faculty of Human Sciences - Vaal University of Technology / The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between visual and
verbal codes of visual rhetoric in a sequential art setting. The literature
investigation component of the study covered: (1) the notion of visual literacy;
(2) the principles of visual rhetoric, and (3) trends in sequential art. The
empirical component of the study involved the production of sequential art
test material with an accompanying questionnaire in order to measure the
comprehension of visual rhetoric in a sample of 197 undergraduate students
at the Vaal University of Technology. The working hypotheses that guided
the study were, firstly, that the comprehension of the visual code of the visual
rhetoric used in a sequential art setting differs between (a) study participants
that received visual training prior to the data collection and (b) study
participants that received no visual training prior to the data collection, and secondly, that the comprehension of the visual code of the visual rhetoric
used in a sequential art setting differs between (a) study participants that
received test material in their home language and (b) study participants that
did not receive the test material in their home language. Following a one-way
ANOVA analysis of the questionnaire data, the first hypothesis indicated a
significant statistical difference (p=O.OO) and was not rejected. The second
hypothesis indicated no significant statistical difference (p=0.138) and was
rejected. Based on the result obtained, possibilities for further research were motivated. / Vaal University of Technology

[en] THE VISUAL COMMUNICATION FOR ORIENTATION IN THE INFORMAL ORIGIN ÁREAS OF THE CITY / [pt] A COMUNICAÇÃO VISUAL NOS ESPAÇOS DE ORIGEM INFORMAL DA CIDADELUIS OTAVIO NOGUEIRA PESSOA 08 October 2008 (has links)
Retratando a realidade
social e morfológica de cinco comunidades do bairro Maré,
presença do poder público nestas áreas. / [en] This research investigates the visual communication for
orientation in the urban spaces of the city of Rio de
Janeiro, its emitters, media, and receptors, with
the purpose of evaluating its discursive extension and to
speculate on its probable approach potential among the
informal (or of informal origin) areas, and the group
of the city, contributing to the declared town hall
intention of integrating the whole urban environment.
Portraying the social and morphological reality of five
informally originated communities of the district Maré, it
observes the actions and omissions of the official agents
responsible for this communication in the public
space and it identifies needs of paradigm changes, and
ergonomic and enunciative adaptations, so that the systems
of visual communication for orientation in these
places, dense and organic, could be a powerful instrument
to strengthen the public power in these places.

Visual. Coloquial. Virtual.
The present work has main goal to identify and characterize the emerging phenomenon of graphic comic expression in natural and everyday conversation in virtual social networks, especially through messages in a hybrid language. These still images and text combine creatively through communication skills, previously little explored by the average user, and skills associated with the expression of mood design, to spread \"jokes\" on current affairs among circles of friends and followers. Communicative units, corpus of this work, assume the behavior of visual memes and their classification under the points of view of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, as proposed by Morris (1985), assist in clarifying the relationship between its constituent elements. The popularization of messages with such features indicates its potential to significantly influence on both the maintenance and amplification of \"social capital\" user as creator in the new cultural traits of an emerging culture amateur graphic.

Design total: Cauduro Martino, 1967-1977 / Total design: Cauduro Martino, 1967-1977Longo Junior, Celso Carlos 12 April 2007 (has links)
Under the shield of modern architecture, the competencies of visual programming and industrial design were merged by the hands of architects João Carlos Cauduro and Ludovico Antonio Martino, through the creation, development, and implementation of systemic projects of environmental and corporate identity. In São Paulo, in the 1960s and 1970s and circumscribed by the apex of the modern paradigm this total design not only yielded important and long standing visual identities for the Brazilian productive and operational sectors, but also materialized iconic public spaces for the metropolis, corroborating the consolidation of those projects paradigmatic matrices in the last instance. These matrices, at that moment, introduced in the society a typological and methodological knowledge, reiterating an old ideology and bringing the architect closer to his civil functions within the citys new needs for information and communication.

My intention for this show is to explore the effect of alienation that ironically is being
produced by social media. The principal concept is developed around shame, sharing, and
notoriety on three different social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and
Telegram. This show explores the social media perception of myself in the realms of
human interaction, identity, and memory in social media through the critical
appropriation of the languages of design and photography. The installation with four
Facebook profile pictures in large scale and framed looks at the way a personal image can
convey the impression of widely different personalities. The selections of personal
exchanges over Facebook and Instagram show the degree to which social media creates
its own visual language and mode of communication, which sometimes becomes
separated from reality and intention. The show extends its reach to performance and
direct interaction with the viewer through the availability of stickers for comments by the profile pictures and a third area, where viewers can write or draw their own messages
through the simple medium of chalk, which can then be rendered in virtual form through
posts on a specially created webpage. The viewer should thus be challenged to ask, to
what degrees do words and images communicate the essence of our selves and our own
will. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Previous issue date: 2018-06-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present research is the result of studies of the creative processes of the
contemporary process art works by Elida Tessler and Beth Moysés, which modify
over time, tending towards the unfinished and coinciding with the life of the artist.
Art works that are constituted by the participation of people in its process, with the
proposition of actions and the activation of experiences, whose sensorial
aesthetic is completed by the action of the spectator, requiring a more active
reception. The research was carried out through the observation of a diversity of
documents of creative processes so to formulate hypothesis about the main knots
of the creation networks studied. For this purpose, the theory of creation
processes conceived by Cecília Almeida Salles was used as an instrument for the
critique of the processes and as an itinerary for the study and understanding of
the art works. The aim of the research is to analyze the communicational aspects
of practices that exceed the relation artist spectator and integrate people in their
processes, creating a collaboration structure. The objective is to understand the
artistic-creative procedures that unleash processes of singularization,
vida do artista.

Previous issue date: 2018-06-29 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The following research aims to investigate which meaning-effects are produced
from the massive presence of a visual manifestation denominated pixação
(written with “x”) on buildings and monuments of São Paulo’s contemporary
scenery. The general objective of the research is to understand which values
are articulated in this cipher, which reveal ways of being and happening in the
city, in syncretic construction with the urban space that presents the inequalities
and discontinuities produced over the years of the city’s development.
Considering the most relevant studies about Pixação, mainly in the study fields
of sociology, urbanism and communication, we intend to detail a deepen
the understanding of this manifestation from a unexplored perspective: how
theirs ways of presence build new senses in the public space. The study corpus,
which focuses the space analysis, embraces Sé and República boroughs,in
São Paulo’s central area, which maintains the diachronic marks of its construction.
To present and analyze the tactics engaged by pixadores, we collect
empirical data, news from digital and printed media and videos produced by
themselves. Analysing the communicational and identity processes built in the
space occupied by pixação, we get in on how the manifestations correlate a
part and the whole of the city, approaching the way they make the observer
feel the risks and the interactions that the practice of pixação promotes,
inviting to enter into their joints and build their senses together. The study
is based on the theoretical premises of the discursive semiotics proposed by
Algirdas Julien Greimas, with methodological procedures of meaning-generating
methods, as well as Eric Landowski’s sociosemiotcs in the formulation of
regimes of meaning, interaction and risk, and the postulates of Ana Claudia
de Oliveira, especially regarding to semiotics of visuality. The result puts us
in front of a visual manifestation of strong aesthetic value which translates
the ways of living in the city from the perspective of a peripheral population,
which is often marginalized, and start to compose a enunciate of the public
spaces with the memory of individual and collective paths in the narratives
of the city. Appropriating of the center of the megalopolis, this peripheral
population reinscribes themselves as protagonists, re-signifying their invisible
place in history. The research contributes, for the analysis about strategies of
democratization and appropriation of public space and its patrimony / A presente pesquisa busca investigar quais efeitos de sentido são produzidos
e comunicação, objetivamos detalhar e aprofundar a compreensão dessa
presença constroem novos sentidos no espaço público.
democratização e apropriação do espaço público e seu patrimônio

From Brecht to Butler: an Analysis of Dirty GrrrlsLugo, Joanna 08 1900 (has links)
“From Brecht to Butler: An Analysis of Dirty Grrrls” is a production centered thesis focusing on the image of the mudflap girl. The study examines the graduate production Dirty Grrrls as a form of praxis intersecting the mudflap girl, the theory of gender performativity, and Brechtian methodology. As a common yet unexplored symbol of hypersexual visual culture in U.S. American society, the mudflap girl acts as a relevant subject matter for both the performance and written portion of the study. Through the production, mudflap girl materializes at the meeting point of the terms performance and performativity. The written portion of this project examines this intersection and discusses the productive cultural work accomplished on the page and on the stage via live embodiment of performativity.

Previous issue date: 2011-12-05 / The research aims to trace a historical overview, critical and analytical about the posters nineteenth-century Paris and its importance for the development of visual communication in the same way as the poster-art study in Sao Paulo at the beginning of the century, locating them within call Urban Art, and reflecting on the effects of communication, that interfere with the contemporary visuality. Consequently, analysis of visual inheritance brought the beginning of the twentieth to the twenty-first century and its intersections. The research problem is to investigate the transit of visuality from modern to contemporary, from the object visualities poster and how these make up the urbanity of these periods. Secondly, if this is the question of how the sign represents a space of transgression and the hypothesis that it really opens up new possibilities for the development of visual languages. Finally, the main objective of the thesis attempts to reflect on the connections between objects from similar motives of urban representation and convergence between the arts and communications from the object poster. The corpus will consist of posters of the last two decades of the nineteenth century until about 1914, produced and exhibited in the city of Paris by the artists Jules Cheret, Mucha, Steinlen, L. Capiello, Grasset, Toulouse-Lautrec. As well as art posters, displayed in the city of Sao Paulo in the first decade of this century produced by anonymous designers within the scope of visual Art-Urbana. The methodology will be applied to research literature review and survey of the iconographic posters and photographic records of nineteenth-century art posters pasted in the city of São Paulo between 2009 and 2011. From this iconography is intended to compare the look of the cities of Paris and Sao Paulo. This study is supported in the conceptions of modernity, Walter Benjamin, historiographical references in graphic design in Art History and Urban in the frame of Peircean semiotic to trim the analysis of the object. The project, therefore, are relevant to the contemporary study of communication as it ponders the questions of the poster as an object of communication within the Belle Epoque and contemporary aesthetic and possible relationships between them / A pesquisa pretende traçar um panorama histórico, crítico e analítico a respeito dos cartazes oitocentistas parisienses e sua importância para o desenvolvimento da comunicação visual, assim como da mesma maneira estudar o pôster-arte em São Paulo neste início do século XXI, localizando-os dentro da chamada Arte Urbana, e refletindo sobre seus efeitos de comunicação, que interferem na visualidade contemporânea.

Previous issue date: 2010-05-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The object of this research was territory brands - a drawing and a slogan symbolically
representing a place for the external market, namely in the tourism area -, focused on the Brazil Brand developed by Embratur in 2005 and on the Spain Brand developed by Turespaña in 1984. Here we question whether the brand representation
is able to summarize different elements, such as dance, folklore, nature, climate,
religion, language and all the remaining physical/economic/cultural regional characteristics, even if as a mosaic and heterogeneously, in one single image. The objective is to analyze how the complex codes of the Brazilian culture and Spanish culture were translated into brands' drawings supported by their communicational elements, such as colors, shapes, fonts and slogan. To understand the function of a commercial brand inside a consumer society we adopted as methodological base authors who discuss image and commercial brand, such as Adrian Frutiger, E. H. Gombrich, Joan Costa, Justo Villafañe and Rudolf Arnheim. In order to analyze how a symbol is received, added, transformed and developed by and for a culture we consulted authors who discuss semiotics and culture, such as Amálio Pinheiro, Edgar
Morin, Jesús Martín-Barbero and Iuri Lótman. The methodology consisted of a bibliographical research and assessment of brand images, and the theoretical scenario
includes the culture's semiotics, communication and cultural crossbreeding. In these four years of research, including a six-month period of sandwich-doctorate held in Seville, Spain, a significant increase could be seen in the number of territory brands launched by Latin American countries and in the world. As hypothesis under analysis we propose that creating territory brands arises from the need of building advertising symbols more flexible than national flags and coats of arms / Esta pesquisa tem como objeto as marcas-território desenho e slogan que representam
