ABSTRACT There are vast experiences in digital technology education in the classroom in different Brazilian regions. The objective of this research is to analyze the digital information policies adopted in the public high schools of the capitals located in the Northeast region, regarding the adoption of mobile devices for access to information. For specific objectives, schools were mapped to be part of the sample surveyed. Next, the identification of the mobile devices used in the schools studied and the investigation of the consequences of the use of the mobile devices for access to the information and finally to understand the reasons of the adoption or not of the mobile devices by the schools to be part of the investigation. It is a descriptive research, with an approach that is characterized as qualitative and quantitative. The procedures adopted refer to the study of multiple cases and the techniques were based on questionnaires with teachers from the nine federative units of the Northeast region. For the execution of the research, the teachers of the average level of nine units of education of the Northeast - being a school in each capital - were consulted through questionnaires sent by electronic mail. The questionnaires sought to investigate the concept that the teacher has about the use of mobile digital technologies in the classroom, what devices are adopted, if there is difficulty in the use of these technologies in the classroom, how often the use in class, technology Digital technology most used between the cell phone, tablet and notebook and how is the experience with the use of digital technology in the classroom. The results show that the tablet, a mobile device offered by the Ministry of Education to many public schools in the Northeast region, mainly for the use of teachers, is one of the least used mobile technologies used by teachers. The mobile and the notebook are work tools most used by teachers in class, finding no difficulty in using and the results obtained with these mobile technologies in the classroom, add value in the acquisition of knowledge regarding the classes without the aid of these technologies . We have identified examples of digital information policies within schools in Fortaleza (CE) and João Pessoa (PB) that can serve as a basis for the creation of a digital information policy in other states. Autonomy, self-creation, and the woman artist figure in Woolf, Lessing, and Atwood

Sharpe, Martha January 1992 (has links)
This thesis traces the self-creation and autonomy of the woman artist figure in Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook, and Margaret Atwood's Cat's Eye. The first chapter conveys the progression of autonomy and self-creation in Western-European philosophy through contemporary thinkers such as Charles Taylor, Robert Pippin, Alexander Nehamas, and Richard Rorty. This narrative culminates in a rift between public and private, resulting from the push--especially by Nietzsche--toward a radical, unmediated independence. Taylor and Rorty envision different ways to resolve the public/private rift, yet neither philosopher distinguishes how this rift has affected women by enclosing them in the private, barring them from the public, and delimiting their autonomy. The second chapter focusses on each woman artist's resistance to socially scripted roles, accompanied by theories about resistance: Woolf with Rachel Blau DuPlessis on narrative resistance, Lessing with Julia Kristeva on dissidence, and Atwood with Stephen Hawking and Kristeva on space-time. The third chapter contrasts the narratives of chapters 1 and 2 and reveals how the woman artist avoids the problematic public/private rift by incorporating the ethics developed within the private into her art; she balances her creative goals with responsibility to others. Drawing on the work of women moral theorists, this thesis suggests that women's self-creation and autonomy result in an undervalued but nevertheless workable solution to the public/private rift.

The Effect of Mobile Technology as an Active Student Response System on the Acquisition of U.S. History Content of Secondary Students with Specific Learning Disabilities

Monem, Ruba 16 March 2015 (has links)
Students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) typically learn less history content than their peers without disabilities and show fewer learning gains. Even when they are provided with the same instructional strategies, many students with SLD struggle to grasp complex historical concepts and content area vocabulary. Many strategies involving technology have been used in the past to enhance learning for students with SLD in history classrooms. However, very few studies have explored the effectiveness of emerging mobile technology in K-12 history classrooms. This study investigated the effects of mobile devices (iPads) as an active student response (ASR) system on the acquisition of U.S. history content of middle school students with SLD. An alternating treatments single subject design was used to compare the effects of two interventions. There were two conditions and a series of pretest probesin this study. The conditions were: (a) direct instruction and studying from handwritten notes using the interactive notebook strategy and (b) direct instruction and studying using the Quizlet App on the iPad. There were three dependent variables in this study: (a) percent correct on tests, (b) rate of correct responses per minute, and (c) rate of errors per minute. A comparative analysis suggested that both interventions (studying from interactive notes and studying using Quizlet on the iPad) had varying degrees of effectiveness in increasing the learning gains of students with SLD. In most cases, both interventions were equally effective. During both interventions, all of the participants increased their percentage correct and increased their rate of correct responses. Most of the participants decreased their rate of errors. The results of this study suggest that teachers of students with SLD should consider a post lesson review in the form of mobile devices as an ASR system or studying from handwritten notes paired with existing evidence-based practices to facilitate students’ knowledge in U.S. history. Future research should focus on the use of other interactive applications on various mobile operating platforms, on other social studies subjects, and should explore various testing formats such as oral question-answer and multiple choice.

Usability Evaluation of Notebook Computers and Cellular Telephones Among Users with Visual and Upper Extremity Disabilities

Mooney, Aaron Michael 26 July 2002 (has links)
Information appliances such as notebook computers and cellular telephones are becoming integral to the lives of many. These devices facilitate a variety of communication tasks, and are used for employment, education, and entertainment. Those with disabilities, however, have limited access to these devices, due in part to product designs that do not consider their special needs. A usability evaluation can help identify the needs and difficulties those with disabilities have when using a product and universal design principles can then be applied to enhance accessibility and usability. This study addresses the usability of two of the most common information appliances - notebook computers and cellular telephones. The usability of notebook computers was evaluated using a remote ethnographic method where participants recorded usability-related critical incidents. Participants included those with a wide range of abilities, such as legal blindness, total blindness, and upper extremity physical disabilities. Objective and subjective measures were used to determine the effects of several specific design parameters for cellular telephones. The notebook computer study revealed that participants have difficulty with non-standard keyboard layouts, the use of isometric pointing devices, case latches, and inadequate system feedback. User performance and ratings in the cellular telephone study were the best with the 12 mm lateral pitch and 0.7 mm key height, while the fewest task failures were committed using the 0.5 mm keystroke. Participants also preferred telephone models with large <Power>, <Send> and <End> keys located in prominent locations, and 22-point and 36-point display fonts. These results were used to generate product-specific design guidelines that can be used to design notebook computers and cellular telephones that are more usable and accessible for users with visual and upper extremity physical disabilities. Universal design implications are also discussed. / Master of Science

The Notebook and the Romance Genre : An Investigation of The Notebook As A Romance Novel

Kapic, Ajla January 2019 (has links)
Critics and readers often consider Nicholas Sparks’ novel The Notebook to be a romance novel, while Sparks himself considers it a love story. Sparks claims that there are no similarities between the two genres. Therefore, this paper investigates the differences and similarities between the romance genre and the love story genre, while simultaneously exploring The Notebook’s storyline, the characterization, and the marketing surrounding the book in order to understand the novel’s classification. The purpose is to discover if The Notebook can be identified as a romance even if it never was Sparks’ intention. The only aspect that differs between the genres is how the ending is written, other than that there are no remarkable differences. There are also several elements that validates that The Notebook has romantic features. Both of the protagonists have romance characteristics, the cover of the novel is a characteristic romance cover, and the storyline itself is based on a romance structure and it follows all of the essential romance elements. The conclusion of this paper is that The Notebook has romance elements and therefore can be placed in the romance genre even if that never was Sparks’ intention.

The Effect of Interactive Notebooks on the Science Proficiency of Biology 1 Students

Newson, Shereka Faye 01 January 2019 (has links)
Local High School, a pseudonym, located in Northwest Mississippi has in place two differing Biology 1 curricula; in one curriculum, the students use interactive notebooks daily and in the other curriculum, they are not used. The purpose of this ex post facto quasi-experimental study was to investigate the impact that an instructional tool, such as the interactive notebook, could have on student achievement. Instructional design theory and the materials, methods, environment, collaboration, content, and assessment (MMECCA) framework served as the theoretical framework for this study. The standard measure of science proficiency was provided by the test results from the Biology 1 Subject Area Testing Program assessment (SATP). Using data from 2016-2017 Biology 1 students who took the pretest, CASE 21 assessment, and the posttest, Biology 1 SATP assessment (N = 184), three independent samples t tests were used to analyze the data. The first independent samples t test performed on data from the pretest established that the two groups began the study with similar science proficiencies. The second and third independent samples t tests, conducted using overall mean scores and the mean scores for each of the individual six categories from the SATP Biology 1 assessment, determined that there was a statistically significant difference in the overall science proficiency of the two groups. A position paper was developed recommending the use of the interactive notebook to improve science proficiency. Positive social change is expected to occur as this information can be used to inform educational policy makers and close the achievement gap.
