Nurses' experiences of providing person-centered care for older people with dementia : A meta-synthesis of qualitative studies

Nakindja, Alice January 2024 (has links)
Aims: This literature review aimed to synthesize nurses’ experiences of providing person-centered care for older people with dementia.  Background: Life radically changes for people with health problems, especially dementia. The number of people with dementia is increasing due to the rapid increase of the aging population. It is predicted that aging will increase worldwide from 5.7 million to 6.6 million people between 2017 and 2050. Around 10% of the elderly suffer from dementia and 3% live in dedicated nursing homes. This implies an urgent need to improve the quality of care for people with dementia.  Method: This study was conducted as a qualitative meta-synthesis. The electronic databases CINAHL and PubMed were used to identify relevant literature, complemented by manual searches of journals and references.  Results: The synthesis of findings from seven studies unveiled nurses' experiences in delivering person-centered care to individuals with dementia, yielding two overarching themes: "Person-centered care in practice" and "Organizational perspectives within person-centered care". Under "Person-centered care in practice", nurses recognized the significance of personal connections, support, and adaptation, considering the patient's life history crucial. "Organizational perspectives within person-centered care" revealed challenges such as high workload and negative attitudes, hindering person-centered care implementation. Nurses expressed concerns about a lack of knowledge and skills, emphasizing the importance of education.  Conclusion: Knowing the patient's life history improves several aspects of care such as communication between the nurse and the person suffering from dementia. Patient safety and security will also improve. If nurses are aware of the patient’s likes and dislikes, the overall care can be more personalized.

Nursing Assistants’ Perceptions of Physical Activity and Exercise among Older People : a Phenomenographic Study / Hemtjänstpersonalens uppfattningar om fysisk aktivitet och träning för äldre : en fenomenografisk studie

Wilnerzon Thörn, Rose-Marie January 2014 (has links)
Nursing assistants’, as frontline caregivers in the care of older people, have a unique opportunity to encourage physical activity and exercise in older people. Hence, the perceptions by these care providers of physical activity and exercise among older people are an essential factor. The aim of this study is to  describe how nursing assistants perceive physical activity and exercise for older people, over the age of 65, receiving home care and home help. Method: Data was collected through interviews with 19 nursing assistants, selected by strategic sampling and analysed using a phenomenographic approach. Results: The findings show two different perceptions of physical activity for the older people: “physical activity is to  move” described as everyday movements i.e. everyday activities and outdoors activities and “physical activity is to make an effort”, described as older people handling their day-to-day tasks and outdoor activities or struggling to be less inactive and performing healthy activities. Three different perceptions of exercise for the older people emerged: “exercise as physical activity”, described as movement performed, based on individual exercise programmes from the physiotherapist or through day-to-day tasks such as dressing, cleaning or shopping; “exercise as rehabilitation” described as part of the rehabilitation process or as a prescription to follow, and “exercise as an agent” described as enhancing the health and well-being of older people, principally related to mobility or enhancing the older people’s social activities. Conclusion: This study shows that there are a variety of perceptions of physical activity and exercise among nursing assistants which can be important for health professionals to be aware of, in order to provide targeted support. This study also shows two different approaches by nursing assistants towards older people: a health-promotion one and a preventive one; it would seem to be important to be aware of these approaches, if a shift towards promoting health and well-being should be implemented in the care of older people.

SJUKSKÖTERSKANS ERFARENHET ATT BEVARA INTEGRITETEN HOS ÄLDRE MED DEMENSSJUKDOM PÅ SJUKHUS : EN SYSTEMATIK LITTERATURATURSTUDIE / THE NURSE'S EXPERIENCE OF PRESERVING THE INTEGRITY OF THE ELDERLY WITH DEMENTIA IN HOSPITALS : A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Nakindja, Alice January 2021 (has links)
Background: The proportion of elderly people in the population is increasing in societies and the health problems are increasing for the vast majority. About half of the patients in hospitals are elderly people. Elderly patients are vulnerable and at risk of illness and injury. It is easy for people to feel that their personal sphere is being exposed because of illness, especially dementia, because dementia affects memory, other cognitive abilities and behaviors that significantly affect a person's ability to maintain their daily activities. All this can cause the elderly patient to have difficulty protecting his or her integrity.   Aim: The purpose of this study is to describe the nurse's experience of preserving the integrity of the elderly who suffer from dementia in hospitals.   Method: The study is a systematic literature study, which uses qualitative meta-synthesis to analyze 19 articles with the objective of answering the study's purpose.   Results: The result of the study consists of four main categories: preserving the patient's physical integrity, preserving the patient's mental integrity, preserving the patient's moral integrity, as well as the organizational aspect of preserving patients' integrity.   Conclusion: Nurses are in dire need of competence about dementia in order to be able to preserve the integrity of a person with dementia. Collaborating with a geriatric specialist when needed can contribute to good nursing. The life history of the elderly person is central to preserving patients' integrity.
