The aim of this research is threefold:
• to determine the nature of job satisfaction;
• to determine the factors which influence the job satisfaction of principals at secondary schools; and
• to determine which factors influence the job satisfaction of principals at secondary schools in practice.
In order to achieve these aims a literature study and empirical study were undertaken.
The literature study was based on primary and secondary sources. A DIALOG
computer search was undertaken with the keywords such as: work motivation; work
satisfaction, teaching conditions; teacher motivation, secondary school and principal.
The nature of job satisfaction was then discussed. Once the management factors that
influence work satisfaction of principals were identified, they were grouped and
discussed under the following headings:
• factors that centres in the principal himself;
• factors situated within the school;
• factors at management level;
• factors within the community; and
• factors within the teaching career.
A questionnaire was compiled from existing questionnaires (that of Hillebrand, 1989;
Esterhuizen, 1989; Du Toit, 1994; Engelbrecht, 1996 and the Minnesota Importance
Questionnaire, 1985).
All principals at secondary schools in the Northern Cape Province, excluding schools of
Correctional Services, were taken as target group in this research. The questionnaires
were sent to principals within the target group. The information was statistically
analized with the aid of a computer after with it was interpreted. Subsequent to these
results recommendations were made.
The empirical study showed that principals at secondary schools experience
reasonable work satisfaction but that there are still certain factors which should be
addressed.
Certain recommendations are made on the basis of the empirical investigation. The
most important recommendations are that the problem of work security should be
addressed, rationalisation and assessment of teachers should be planned carefully and
the communication between the school and the Education Department should be
improved. Achievements of principals should receive more acknowledgement. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2000

'n Ondersoek na die implementering van leerderondersteuning in landelike laerskoleCloete, Jemina Elize January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine how learner support has been implemented in rural, historically coloured, Afrikaans primary schools in a part of the Northern Cape, in particular with regard to what teachers, education administrators, parents and learners understand about learner support, the participants' understanding of learner support compared to the White Paper 6, to what extent schools agree and disagree in their implementation of learner support, and the indicators for realistic learner support in this context. This study made use of the conceptual framework of Transformative Inclusive Education. A qualitative research approach was followed. In this study the research design known as Appreciative Inquiry was used. Findings indicated that learner support is indeed implemented in this specific context. It is also clear that the participants have a good understanding of learner support which corresponds well with the policy position, namely that learner support entails academic support but also other developmental activities which all in the end benefit learners’ scholastic achievement. The schools agree in large part in their implementation of learner support and differ only where contextual differences dictate. The indicators for realistic learner support in this context include professional commitment, mutual dedication to each other by the school and the community, countering the potential negative effects of geographical isolation and building strong networks with external partners. / Thesis (MEd (Learner Support))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Basic education in the language of choice : a contextual interpretation / Johan Christiaan BornmanBornman, Johan Christiaan January 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the constitutional right to receive basic education in the
language of choice. This fundamental human right imposes a duty on the state to
provide children with education in the language of their choice whenever
reasonably practicable. It is not a matter of whether the state has to fulfil section
29(2) of the Constitution, but rather how to give effect to this provision.
The right to receive basic education in the language of your choice is however,
qualified by the specific internal limitation that provides that the right is subject to
the condition that provision of education in the preferred language has to be
reasonably practicable. Section 36, the limitation clause, is also a measure that
can be used to limit this right.
The aim of this paper is to contextually interpret the fundamental right to receive
education in the language of one’s choice and to weigh up the intent of the
provision to the provision’s actual result. All relevant factors will be taken into
consideration to examine the possibility of limiting the right to receive instruction
in the language of choice to comply with the purpose of education and the best
interests of the child. / Thesis (LL.M. (Comparative Child Law))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

The effectiveness with which people learn in modem organizations is increasingly emphasized in today's information and knowledge driven economy. The effectiveness of learning and the increase of expertise in a rapidly and dramatically changing economic, political and social environment is regarded as being extremely important for the success and survival of organizations. The way an individual views the process of learning influences the learner's approach to a learning opportunity and the effectiveness of the learning process concerned. An individual's awareness of his/her own learning approach and opportunities for critical and realistic reflection on his/her own behaviour is important for the development of effective learning. Opportunities for critical and realistic reflection on his/her own learning behaviour promotes a learner's ability to handle new and complex situations. The need for a reliable and valid measure for learning approaches as a means to facilitate critical and realistic reflection by a learner must be emphasized in this regard. Related to this is the need for a systems model which promotes a holistic approach to the interpretation of learning approaches and the facilitation of effective learning within organizations. The primary aim of the study was to develop a questionnaire with acceptable psychometric properties which could be used to determine the learning approaches of adults. The secondary aim of the study was to develop a systems model which indicates the relationship between learning approaches, macro- and micro-learning environment factors, personal factors and learning outcomes for organizations. A literature analysis was undertaken to develop a systems model (secondary aim) which could serve as a theoretical framework for the development of a learning approaches questionnaire. Different approaches as described in existing literature were identified, delimited and defined. The factors which influence individuals' learning approaches were investigated. A systems model of learning was developed on the basis of the literature study. This model is used to indicate the relations between learning approaches, learning environment factors, personal factors and learning outcomes. A clear and identifiable input component, a process component and an outcomes component which are interdependent and interact with one another, were identified on the basis of the literature. The study concluded that a systems model of learning provides a useful holistic framework to assist the understanding, interpretation and influencing of learning approaches and the factors which influence learning approaches. The empirical part of the study focuses on the development of a learning approaches questionnaire for adults. The learning approaches questionnaire (LAQ) which was developed consists of two sections, a learning approaches in terms of the learning content section (LAQc) and a learning approaches in terms of social orientation section (LAQs). The LAQc section consists of a deep, surface and achievement learning motive dimension and a related deep, surface and achievement strategy dimension, as well as a self-efficacy and fear-of-failure dimension. The LAQs consists of a dependent, independent, co-operative and competitive learning approach dimension. The research results demonstrated that the LAQ displays content, factor and construct validity. The factor structures of the LAQ are stable for business and tertiary learning contexts. The research results also showed that the LAQ is a reliable and unbiased measure for various language groups. The results of the empirical investigation strongly supported the systems model of learning. The grouping of learning approaches according to particular views of what learning encompasses, the mutual relations between learning approaches, as well as the situational nature of learning approaches as depicted in the systems model, were confirmed. By using the systems model of learning, the LAQ can make an important contribution to the facilitation of effective learning in organizations. / Thesis (D Com (Human Resources Management))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Onderwysers se deurleefde ervaring van werksbevrediging in die onderwys (Afrikaans)Oberholzer, Helena Susanna 11 August 2008 (has links)
This research project was done with the aim in mind to determine how teachers experience their lived through experience of job satisfaction in teaching. The qualitative research process was followed by making use of narrative methods such as narrative essays, interviews and observations. The essays and interviews served as basis for data collection purposes. If was essential for me as researcher, to find the reasons why teachers have negative and / or positive connotations towards certain teaching facets, and also to try and determine what their expectations, feelings and views are about education, so that I can determine how they experience teaching as a career. This research looked at the perceptions, viewpoints and experiences of individual teachers in relation to job satisfaction in teaching. Job satisfaction in teaching is essential, as it evolves around many different parties. It is therefore essential that a healthy organisational environment exists or is created at schools, so that effective teaching can take place. This research focus on factors that have an influence on job satisfaction and the implementation thereof to ensure maximum productivity and job satisfaction amongst teachers. This includes the role that the principal plays in creating a working environment where teachers can experience job satisfaction. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Sosiaal-ekonomies woon baie Tswanas as uitgebreide
gesinne in klein huise.
Matriculants from Tswana schools in the Northern Cape generally have been achieving poor results.
Political instability leading to class boycots has been regarded as one of the main reasons.
The main reason for this research is to determine the role played by culture in the achievement of
poor results. A literature survey has indicated that there is a close interrelationship between education/
upbringing, adulthood and culture. A human being cannot reach adulthood without education
and different cultures have different criteria for maturity.
Schools in South Africa are open to all race groups which results in a variety of cultural groups
receiving education in the same classroom. To avoid misunderstandings and conflicts in the classroom,
multicultural education may be used.
With the empirical investigation by means of questionnaires and interviews an attempt is made to
determine which cultural aspects play a role in the poor academic results achieved by Tswana matriculants.
The medium of instruction is a problem in a multi-cultural country where it is sometimes impractical
to apply mother tongue education. As far as English as medium of instruction is concerned, it is
problematic for many Tswanas in the Northern Cape as they are seldom exposed to it during their
pre-school years.
As far as the cultural-historical aspects are concerned, the Tswana is a proud people who gladly make
contact with and want to learn from other cultures. Socio-economically many Tswanas live as e..'Ctended
families in small dwellings.
Educators will have to act professionaly in the execution of their duties. Pupils will have to accept
responsibility for their actions and build, with the teachers, a cultUre of learning at every school. / Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Historiese Opvoedkunde)
