"All Blacks Vote the Same?": Assessing Predictors of Black American Political Participation and Partisanship

Jackson, Antoine Lennell 01 January 2013 (has links)
The politics of Blacks are stereotypically assumed to be the same and share the same race-based root, be it disenfranchisement or solidarity. Given the recent jump in Black political participation and the seemingly race-based and partisan nature "the Black vote" holds, it is essential to investigate what factors drive Black voter turnout as well as what factors contribute to the partisan nature of Black voters. Most other studies of political opinion, turnout, and party preference only consider comparable demographic groups such as men versus women or Blacks versus Whites. This study examines partisan preference and participation only among Black Americans. The data used here come from the American National Election Survey (ANES) 1984, 1996, and 2008 Pre- and Post-Election Survey, election years that coincided with peaks and lows of Black voter turnout since the Civil Rights Movement. Findings indicate that Black Democrats report higher voter turnout than Black non-Democrats, and younger Blacks and those who opposed abortion were less likely to vote. Also, results suggest that although Black partisanship can be predicted by gender, abortion stance, and age, partisanship is largely not a product of demographics or political stances based on how little variance these models account; rather, Black partisanship may be explained by aspects that go beyond these usual determinants, measures, and proxies. Implications of this study show that non-Democratic Blacks were political available to other parties, and it warrants a further investigation into Black partisanship.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the feminine voice

Bonneau, Chris W. January 1998 (has links)
This paper examines whether Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg demonstrates any evidence of a "feminine voice" in her opinions. There has been much jurisprudential literature written recently regrading the possible existence of a "feminine voice." This paper surveyes the literature and defines what is meant by a "feminine voice." The paper proceeds to analyze some of Justice Ginsburg's opinions to determine if a "feminine voice" is present. This study focuses on four areas of law the literature suggests evidence of a "feminine voice" might be found: cases involving gender, race, the Establishment Clause, and physician-assisted suicide. With the exception of cases concerning race, no evidence of a "feminine voice" was found. In race cases, there is evidence to suggest that Justice Ginsburg arrives at her decision in a way that is different from her male colleagues. The lack of evidence of a "feminine voice" in the other areas does not mean that no such voice exists; rather, it is just not present in all of the decisions written by Justice Ginsburg. The paper concludes that, at least in cases involving race, Justice Ginsburg does reason in a "feminine voice." While this is a narrow finding, the fact that there is evidence of a "feminine voice," at least in some cases, suggests that gender does play a role in judicial decision-making at the United States Supreme Court level. / Department of Political Science

Tredje årets gymnasieelevers inställning till och åsikter om blodgivning

Hjelmtorp, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
Background: Health care is in constant need of blood and blood donation during the last few years has declined. An important task for blood centers is to recruit new donors. There’s a lack of research on high school students' attitudes towards blood donation. Objective: To examine high school students' attitudes towards blood donation and their reasons for donating and not donating. Gender differences will also be investigated. The aim is also to investigate what they know about blood donation. Method: One hundred forty-five high school students from Uppsala and Stockholm answered a questionnaire focused on blood donation. Results: Only 22.1% knew what was required to donate blood. The majority of high school students felt that it was good with blood donation. Half wanted to donate blood (52.4 %). The main reason to donate blood wanted to help others. Needle phobia and fear of blood was the main reason not to donate blood. Main reason for not donating blood for men was lack of interest (21.8 %). Medical reasons were an important reason for women not to donate blood (19.1 %). Conclusion: The knowledge of high school students about blood donation is flawed. High school students believe that blood donation is good. High school students want to donate blood to help others, and chooses not to donate blood because of their needle phobia and fear of blood. Reasons to donate blood are similar between men and women, while reasons for not donating blood is widespread.

Project-based learning through the eyes of teachers and students: Investigating opinions of PBL in adult ESL

Petersen, Cristina Suzann 05 September 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines research done to explore teachers‘ and students‘ perspectives and use of Project-based Learning (PBL). The research was conducted at two ESL schools with distinct student populations in Victoria, BC and had 118 total participants. There were 30 teachers from three schools and 88 students from two schools. The teachers and students completed parallel questionnaires asking about their opinions of the various aspects involved in a PBL approach, their use or teachers‘ use of it, their opinions about examples of projects, and also completed open-ended questions about their opinions and experience with projects. The questionnaires were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), non-parametric, 2 independent samples and is the primary quantitative data. The means and statistical significance between teachers and students were examined to find any main differences in opinion about PBL. Individual interviews were also conducted with teachers and students from two schools. Seven teachers also provided some artifacts from their classes which were examined to see if they corresponded with their perspectives. The latter two forms of data collection form the qualitative data in this study. Perspectives on PBL were found to be generally positive, with some mixed results within certain areas. Teachers‘ and students‘ perspectives were not that different, which is encouraging for those interested in using projects. Although teachers scored slightly higher in most cases, there were no stark contrasts between negative and positive attitudes. There were distinct differences between schools, as School A used project work more often due to different student backgrounds and needs. Teachers and students were the most favorable to more common practices in ESL classes, but still exhibited positive perspectives towards aspects of PBL as well. And lastly, the most common type of project being used in adult ESL is the presentation of some kind, falling under the production or performance project type (Stoller, 1997). Beckett‘s (1999) study found that students carried out projects successfully, but that their evaluations ―expressed dilemmas, frustrations, and tensions‖ (Beckett, 2002, p.60). No such comments were found when interviewing students about their project work presentations at School A, as most students felt that they were interesting, motivating, dynamic, and fun,‘among other comments. These results, along with means in the quantitative section exhibiting positive results reveals more support for the use of projects in adult ESL. The most significant discovery from this research was that teachers need to consider their students‘ backgrounds and needs when trying to implement a project. The initial assumption that School B, which had all immigrant students, would have more projects was completely wrong. I was surprised that they did not do more projects, and was faced with the reality that teachers need to take into consideration hectic lives outside of school and family obligations of immigrant students before using a PBL approach. The international students at School A were younger and seemingly more devoted to learning language through a variety of methods within their time in Canada.

Mischievous partners and systemless systems : Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy and Friedrich Schlegel's concept of irony

Frock, Clare January 1992 (has links)
This thesis considers Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy in light of Friedrich Schlegel's concept of irony. Departing from previous criticism, which focuses on Sterne's playful narrative techniques, the discussion here elucidates other ways in which Tristram Shandy exemplifies the kind of irony Schlegel theorizes. These ways include: Sterne's "Mischgedicht" method, which amalgamates in a single work many types of style, or diverse permutations of form and content; the depiction of Parson Yorick, who epitomizes Socratic irony as Schlegel defines it in the 108th Lyceum fragment; Sterne's gentle satirizing of systematic thinkers, including his own narrator, Tristram; and Sterne's attitude toward words, knowledge, and reading. At the end of chapter 5, Sterne's irony is unraveled and reconstructed. This disentangling leads to a proposed refutation of recent interpretation of both Sterne and Schlegel. These studies see Sterne and Schlegel's irony as implying lack or flux of meaning. It is the strong contention of the following thesis that an essential aspect of Sterne and Schlegel's shared ironic world view is the continual, optimistic attempt to understand life, which necessarily presupposes a sincere and profound belief in both meaning and the reliable conveyance of it.
