Outreach in community archives in British Columbia: four case studies

O’Donnell, Christine Ann 11 1900 (has links)
In the past, little has been written about the practical aspects of outreach. This thesis investigates the value of outreach and how it is put into practice in British Columbia's community archives. Interviews with managers of four community archives were conducted. The findings reveal that three of the interviewees regard outreach as a high priority and a fundamental part of regular activity. For these respondents, outreach activities have been positive and beneficial. They have successfully used outreach to augment and assist with acquisition, preservation and use of archival records. Only one interviewee presented a passive and cautious approach towards outreach. Results of this study indicate that outreach activities are not influenced by the administrative setting or the budget of the archives. This study identified the essential components necessary for the implementation and delivery of successful outreach initiatives as: a regular source of funding, incorporation into an annual work plan, district goals and objectives that are relevant to the mandate of the institution, attention to the target audience, community co-operation and support, and evaluation of results. This study reaffirms the value of archivists practising outreach, and provides encouragement to those who are looking for concrete methods of approaching outreach. / Arts, Faculty of / Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), School of / Graduate

Conflito estudo versus trabalho: um estudo de caso sobre educação corporativa online / Conflict study versus work: a case study on education corporate online

Trombetta, Maria Rosa 29 July 2009 (has links)
The study was designed in a way to answer the question: Which affective outcomes emerge from tensions, conflicts, and contradictions experienced by executive-learners when incorporate online corporate educational activities in their routines? Aiming at solving the research question, I developed an in-depth analysis of a cohort from the specialization program (mostly online) in Controllership and Finance offered by FIPECAFI (educational institution) to CNO (organization). The analysis was supported by the Activity Theory with the goal of comprehending, describing and analyzing affective outcomes based on that particular educational activity, identifying perceptions about its impacts on other activities, in distinct dimensions of the learners lives. The main purpose of the research is related to the fact that online corporate education is still a recent phenomenon demanding intense investigation due to its incipient characteristics and social impact. The study is designed based on a qualitative framework, addressing in detail several aspects related to the phenomenon. It is supported by a case study, based on a participative-research and using distinct data collection instruments that, together, afforded triangulation of evidences. The main conclusion indicates that subjects tend to find difficult to verbally express the affective outcomes emerging from the studied activity. However, after data triangulation and critical reflection about the context where the activity takes place, a set of affective outcomes was discovered, and they help unveil, among others and not exhaustively, the increase in the safety level of professional performance, development of self-study discipline, recognition of pleasure related to the programs field, which result in feelings of value, appreciation, achievement and confidence. On the other hand, feelings such as fear, guilty, and isolation, not explicitly reported, came up from the critical reflection and data triangulation, based on personal sacrifices (leisure, personal care, hobbies), family time (children, spouse demand, self-demand) and devotion to others (friends and community). Finally, the main conclusion based on evidence from the majority of the subjects in this case study (and related to the educational activity) is that benefits outnumbered sacrifices and both cognitive and affective outcomes, combined, tend to make each individual stronger, fostering personal achievement and boosting professional development.

Lacroix, Abbey 04 1900 (has links)
Since the beginning of the 21st century, a new dimension has sparked a growing interest : emotions. This dissertation offers an exploratory-descriptive study of the place emotions occupy in archival descriptions and dissemination. To contextualize this study, we begin with a review of key literature between 2008 and 2020 illustrating the evolution of professionals’—archivists, historians, emotions historians, and psychologists—understanding and acceptance of emotions in archival descriptions and dissemination. We then review certain rules for archival description and the place, if any, for including emotions in these descriptions. These overviews lead to an exploratory-descriptive study of three description projects carried out by two Quebec archival institutions, the Lac-Brome Museum and the McCord Museum, who have prepared archival descriptions of different collections of textual records including emotions evoked in these texts. We then discuss our analysis of the different index terms and emotions referenced in these archival descriptions, including certain trends that can be identified. Two perspectives emerge from which emotion can be further considered in archival description : emotion expressed by the subjects represented in the record or by the author of the record ; the place of empathy and emotion in archival dissemination. These perspectives could allow the archival community to better understand and accommodate budding practices involving the inclusion of emotion in archival description and in outreach programs.

Nízkoprahové adiktologické služby na malých městech / Drop In Addictology Services in Towns

Jiříková, Adéla January 2014 (has links)
The thesis deals with the specific characteristics of drop-in addictology services in a small town. In the introduction, the author describes the drop-in addictology services existing and their activities. The thesis provides a brief insight into the basic principles of such services and their application in the Czech Republic. The core of the thesis consists of the research carried out among the employees of the civic association o. s. Prevent who work in drop-in addictology services in small towns. Within such research, the method of semi-structured narrative interview was applied. The objective of such research was to identify the specifics of their work in small towns as perceived by the employees proper. The intention was to compare the work carried out in small towns to the work as conducted in larger ones. The results identified are meant to point out the issues and challenges of working in small towns, to illustrate the setup of services in these locations, and to outline other possibilities for the future through the employees' eyes. The author's conclusions may support the employees in similar services to gain better orientation in the situation that they experience. The thesis may also constitute the basis for the founders of drop-in addictology facilities to change the setup of their...

Roy, Sophie 02 1900 (has links)
This master thesis explores the concept of archival dissemination in the Web 2.0 era. In the North American context, dissemination from an archival perspective includes the promotion, valorization and communication of archives. Web 2.0 represents new and interesting opportunites for dissemination as it facilitates interactions among individuals. As few studies examined this question, we were interested in studying an organisation where Web 2.0 platforms had been integrated to establish a dialog with their known and potential users, in order to enhance the exploitation of their archives as well as to increase their visibility. In this case study of the McCord Museum of Canadian History, we interviewed members of the personnel involved in the implementation of Web 2.0 platforms to discover the motivations behind the adoption of those technologies, as well as to describe the selected tools and the way they were implemented. The advantages and disadvantages of these new dissemination plateforms were highlighted. In conclusion, we propose guidelines to successfully implement Web 2.0 tools.

The role of public libraries in enhancing information literacy skills (ILS) of senior secondary school students in the Central District in Botswana

Dube, Sibongakonke 01 1900 (has links)
Modern day society is characterised by the availability of technology and the abundance of information in all formats that require all individuals using it to poses information literacy skills (ILS).ILS enable people the ability to locate, analyse, evaluate access and retrieve the desired information to satisfy a need. Research on IL in academic and school libraries has gained momentum in the field of Information Science where as little has been documented concerning public libraries and IL. This therefore calls for more research on IL in public libraries. Public libraries serve a wide and diverse community of which students are a part. In instances where school libraries are either non-existent or not developed, students seek assistance from the public library within their community. This study sought to investigate the role of public libraries in enhancing the ILS of senior secondary school students in the Central District in Botswana. The fact that school libraries in Botswana are underdeveloped to produce competent and confident students equipped with ILS that could be used in the work environment and continuous lifelong learning, motivated the study. A concern that there exists a gap in research concerning public libraries and IL within the Botswana context necessitated this study. The study used a survey research design where both quantitative and qualitative research approaches were adopted. This involved the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. The purpose of a mixed methods approach was based on the idea that qualitative results could assist in explaining and interpreting the findings of a quantitative study. Data collection involved three sets of closed ended questionnaires and observations in all schools and public libraries. The population of the study consisted of public librarians, teacher librarians and students. Quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) to generate statistics. The findings of the study revealed that the public libraries in the Central District in Botswana are above average in terms of materials and use. It brought to light that senior secondary school students use the public libraries for school purposes and get assistance when they seek for it. Public librarians do not have special classes aimed at enhancing the ILS of students. The public libraries offer IL in the form of computer training, they do this as, and when students register, just like the other members of the community. The library’s contribution to enhancement of the students’ ILS, (study skills, reading skills and use of reference works) is somewhat limited. Limited resources, lack of reading culture, low budgets, and lack of support from government negatively challenge the full potential impact of IL enhancement. / Information Science / M. Inf. Sc.
