The own-group bias in face processing: the effect of training on recognition performance

Wittwer, Tania 02 March 2021 (has links)
The own-group bias in face recognition (OGB) is the greater facility to distinguish and recognize people from one's own group at the expense of people from other-groups. The OGB has been studied for many years, however, very little research focuses on finding a way to decrease or eliminate it, through training. Reporting five studies involving memory or matching tasks, the aim of the present thesis was to develop and to explore to what extent training can decrease or remove the OGB. French White participants, and South African White, Black and Coloured participants took part in different studies, using Black and White faces as stimuli. In each study, White participants from both countries presented the expected OGB prior to any intervention. However, the presence of the OGB in South African Black participants was detected only in one (matching task) study, instead recording a higher discrimination performance by Black participants for White faces in the other studies. As expected, South African Coloured participants did not display increased discrimination performance for any of the other stimuli groups, both being out-group stimuli. Results from the training studies revealed either (a) no effect of a distributed training in feature focus over 5 weeks; (b) an increase of the OGB after a focus on critical facial features; (c) a decrease of the OGB in a task-specific training using pictures whose quality had been manipulated, and; (d) an important implication of the presence/absence of the target in a field detection study. With some promising results, the present work contributes to our understanding of how training could be used to improve face-recognition, and especially other-group face recognition.

Personliga erfarenheter i arbeten skrivna av gymnasieelever – Om ett av kunskapskraven i ämnet psykologi

Dunkers, Li January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore to what degree the knowledge claim in psychology, that says that the student is to relate knowledge to own experience, has meaning to the learning and understanding of new theoretical knowledge. The object was also to explore what meaning the relation between teacher and student has when it comes to what the student chooses to share out of own experience and what the student thinks is sized up in the assignment. In this study I used a qualitative onset where the material was collected through interviews with six students who studied Psychology 1 in senior high school. The result showed that the students found it clear what was sized up in the assignment. When it comes to relate knowledge to own experience the result showed that all the interviewed students thought it was easier to understand the theoretical knowledge when it was related to own experience. The relation between teacher and student also had significance to what the student chose to share. Furthermore the result showed that certain students who chose to write something personal and emotional could need support in the process and that it is important as a teacher to be responsive to that.

Vlastní literární tvorba s komentářem / Own literary work with a commentary

Sanytráková, Lada January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis "Own literary work with a commentary" consists of, apart from the own literary work, a reflexion on this work, reviews (a review of a nursery school teacher, a secondary school teacher, a review of a regular reader, a review of an author of books for children), response to the reviews, partial conclusions with a feedback and the conclusion. The diploma thesis emphasizes the importance of own author's experience, mainly for the teachers who work with literature in the groups of children. It demonstrates the benefits of literary creative teacher's work for the children's reading experience. In the context, the thesis deals with the development of reading in nursery school, elementary school and family. The diploma thesis describes the features of original author's poetics. Simultaneously, based on the reviews, the author's work is included into the genre of fairy tales. Key words Own literary work, reflexion on own work, own author's experience, children's literature, reading development, author's poetics.

A Study of the Application of a Bring Your Own Device Strategy in an Elementary School

Scholz, Carol Louise 01 January 2016 (has links)
Numerous studies have been published on the efficacy of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) at the U.S. secondary and postsecondary school levels to increase student access to technology. However, there is a lack of data on the efficacy of a BYOD AUP to increase elementary student technology access. The purpose of this descriptive case study was to determine if a BYOD AUP at the U.S. K-5 level would increase students' access to technology as necessitated by the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This study was grounded in social transmission and transformative theories. The phenomenon of a northwest suburban elementary school BYOD implementation was examined by documenting the perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, lived experiences, and practices of administrators and teachers. This study used interview and classroom observation of a purposive selection of 3 elementary educators, the principal, and superintendent. Coding of data according to key words lead to analysis according to nodes and themes. Triangulation of multiple data sources and member checking helped to establish the credibility of data. Study findings documented increased access to technology for elementary students, best practices and steps to implementation. Study recommendations for elementary educators and administrators considering BYOD include consensus building, AUP, technology infrastructure, communications, professional development, classroom management, and lesson design to inform the field on elementary BYOD. Study findings facilitate social change by providing BYOD implementation recommendations, increasing elementary student access to technology at a reduced cost to districts and schools.

The Challenges of Implementing Bring Your Own Device

DeShield, Leslie 01 January 2017 (has links)
Research conducted by Tech Pro (2014) indicated that the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) concept is gaining momentum with 74% of organizations already having some BYOD program or planning to implement one. While BYOD offers several benefits, it also presents challenges that concern information technology leaders and information security managers. This correlational study used the systems theory framework to examine the relationship between information security managers' intentions, perceptions of security, and compliance regarding BYOD implementation. Participants of the study consisted of information security managers in the eastern United States who had obtained the Certified Information Systems Manager certification. Data was collected from 94 information security managers through a survey instrument. The survey instrument integrated three other instruments with proven reliability developed by other researchers. Data was analyzed using a multiple regression analysis to test for a relationship between the variables of the study (security, compliance, and intent to implement BYOD). The multiple regression conducted in this study was insignificant indicating a relationship did not exist between the study's variables (F(2, 86) = 0.33, p = .718, R2 = .00). A significant negative relationship was found between security and compliance indicating a weakly negative correlation (r = -.26, p = .016). Using the results from the study, information technology leaders may be able to develop strategies from which to implement BYOD successfully. Implications for social change include increased knowledge of securing personal devices for employees and consumers in general and reduction in costs associated with security and data breaches.

Jorden åt folket : nationalföreningen mot emigrationen 1907-1925. / Land for the people. : The National Society Against Emigration 1907-1925.

Lindkvist, Anna January 2007 (has links)
<p>This thesis deals with the National Society Against Emigration (Sw.Nationalföreningen mot emigrationen) – referred to as the NE – and its radical right-wing leader Adrian Molin. Th e NE was founded in 1907 in order to stem the tide of emigration from Sweden and facilitate re-immigration by providing jobs and accomodation. Its many bureaus served as employment offi ces, land distribution centres and own-your-own-home companies, mainly aimed at creating smallholdings for Swedish working-class families.</p><p>The purpose of the study is to investigate the organization, concept and practise of the internal colonization of rural Sweden between 1907 and 1925. By following both the successes and setbacks of the NE during the first decades of the twentieth century, ideas and opportunities circulating in Swedish society in a time of wide-ranging ideological and material change are discussed. Questions in focus include why a society to prevent</p><p>emigration from Sweden emerged at that particular time; the function it served for both society and the state; the form internal colonization actually took and how it was conducted in comparison with other governmental and private agricultural reforms; and the attitude of the NE toward modernization in general. Theoretically the dissertation takes its point of departure in theories on nation-building and internal colonization (i.e., the establishment of small-scale farming and the cultivation of new land within the national borders), corporatism and attitudes toward modernization. The ideological analysis has been inspired by political scientist Michael Freeden´s theory of the construction of political ideologies via political concepts, as well as an analysis of the view of social categories such as gender, class and ethnicity. The source material is comprised of magazines, newspaper articles, letters and books and offi cial parliamentary publications. The practise of internal colonization has been studied with the aid of preserved accounts of the NE’s small-scale farming colonies, real estate documents, company reports, correspondance and further press materials.</p><p>The surge of anti-emigration attitudes is explained as a powerful reaction arising at the turn of the century due to the economic upswing in Swedish industry and the social transformations which followed in the 1890s, when the country was seen as a nation with a promising future. That Adrian Molin founded the NE in 1907 is viewed as a consequence of his nationalistic thought. Together with political scientist Prof. Rudolf Kjellén, Molin was one of the country´s foremost advocates of an integrative nationalism.</p><p>The NE was led by an elite of middle- and upper-class men involved in politics, industry and voluntary associations. Female members and representatives of the lower social classes were mostly absent. In general the NE neglected women in both speeches and plans, being preoccupied with ideas concerning the cultivation of middle-class Swedish men.</p><p>The NE became a co-actor in a corporative colonization eff ort sanctioned by government financing during the 1910s. In 1920 the NE’s projects were condemned as hierarchical and undemocratic in comparison with other own-home organizations. Many other own-home companies were built on a cooperative foundation,</p><p>while the NE was run by a national, regional, and local political and financial elite. Suspicions were raised about the raison d´être of the society. The state withdrew its subsidies and loans, and the NE lost it close connections with the government. Though conservative and reactionary in social issues, the NE cannot be characterized as critical of civilization or economic modernization of the country. Its programme intended to aid in the development</p><p>of both agriculture and industry. The creation of more smallholdings would help bridge the problematic transition between two systems, from agrarian to industrial society.</p>
