Assessing Tsunami Risk in Southwest Java, Indonesia: Paleo-Tsunami Deposits and Inundation ModelingDeng, Han 01 February 2018 (has links)
Samples from 13 different sites along the south coast of West Java yield 7 candidate paleo-tsunami sands, which may represent 4 different paleo-tsunami events. Ages obtained from one deposit may document a tsunami and coastal subsidence from an earthquake in 1,053 AD. The tsunami deposit from this event is preserved in an uplifted marine terrace exposed at Panto Cape, Banten Province. We speculated that the terrace has been uplifted about 4.6 m to the present height of 2 m above sea level, since the 1053 AD event at a rate of 4.8 mm/a. This uplift is strong evidence that strain is accumulating at the Java Trench and enough has already accumulated to generate a megathrust earthquake event.Numerical models using ComMIT of possible megathrust earthquake scenarios were constructed using the 2004 Sumatra earthquake, 30-m fault slip, and the 2011 Japan earthquake as proxies. These three scenarios yield earthquakes of Mw 9.3, 9.5 and 8.9, respectively. The worst case scenario is used to estimate the extent of tsunami inundation of the SW coast of Java, which totals 643 km2. The total number of people who inhabit the inundation area is around 451,000. Some coastal configurations cause a no escape situation where the modeled tsunami arrives in less than 20 minutes, which is not enough time for those near the coast to escape far enough inland or to a sufficient elevation to avoid the tsunami. These areas include the coastlines of Sukabumi, Cianjur and west Garut Regencies and the Pameungpeuk area.

High resolution sequence stratigraphy of late Mississippian carbonates in the Appalachian BasinAl-Tawil, Aus 15 December 2008 (has links)
The late Mississippian carbonates in the Appalachian Basin, U.S.A., were deposited on a huge, south-facing ramp during long-term Mississippian transgression that formed the Mississippian supersequence. The St. Louis- to Glen Dean interval consists of up to twelve fourth-order depositional sequences (300 to 400 k.y. average duration). The sequences (a few meters to over a hundred meters thick) consist of eolianites, lagoonal carbonate muds, ooid shoals, and skeletal banks, and open marine skeletal wackestone and basinal marion the ramp-slope and basin margin. Sequence boundaries are at the top of prograding red-beds, eolianites, and shoal water facies on the ramp, and beneath lowstand sand bodies and quartzose calcisiltite wedges on the ramp margin and slope. Maximum flooding surfaces are difficult to map regionally, therefore it is difficult to separate the TST from the HST of these fourth-order sequences. / Ph. D.

Red ochre : an archaeological artifactNortham, Janice K. 14 December 2013 (has links)
Red ochre, an iron-oxide mineral has been found in prehistoric sites worldwide, in many types of
sites. It has been noted as being present, but has not been afforded the status of artifact with the same
level of analysis as other artifacts such as ceramics or lithics.
McCullough’s Run, a multi-component prehistoric cemetery in Indiana contained red ochre with
cremation burials. By treating red ochre as more than incidental to the site, but as an artifact, new
information about mortuary behavior was learned. The red ochre was from locally or regionally
available materials, and was placed with the deceased during cremation.
Therefore, red ochre must be treated as an artifact for comparing, contrasting information intraand
inter-site. / Red ochre as an artifact -- What exactly is red ochre? -- Setting the stage -- The site : McCullough's Run, Bartholomew County, Indiana, 12B1036 -- Red ochre : the artifact. / Department of Anthropology

Contribution of the virtual reconstruction of the pelvis Regourdou 1 (Dordogne, France) in the knowledge of the Neandertal obstetrical mechanics.Meyer, Valentine 04 October 2013 (has links)
The discovery of a new Neandertal pelvis, Regourdou 1, allows discussing the functional implications of Neandertal pelvic morphology. First, the specimen is described, which offers to proveits affiliation to the Neandertal population and to highlight specific Neandertal features. Even if none of these are autapomorphic, the combinaison of these traits characterize the Neandertal pelvic belt. The pelvis Regourdou 1 is reconstructed, by an estimation of missing-data, thanks to the thin-plate splines method, applied on Kebara 2. The dimensions of Regourdou 1 birth canal are compared with those of two others Neandertal individuals (Tabun C1 and Kebara 2) as well as a modern population (n=151).The analysis of the obstetrical planes morphology (by geometric morphometrics) and the cephalo-pelvic relation highlights the presence of traits associated with rotational birth in modern Human. Our work attests the existence of modern type obstetrical mechanics, in Neandertal. This interpretation allows enriching our biological and cultural knowledge of this population.

Entre as tradições planálticas e meridionais: caracterização arqueológica dos grupos caçadores coletores a partir da análise de sete elementos e suas implicações para a ocupação pré-cerâmica da Região Cárstica do Alto São Francisco, Minas Gerais, Brasil: cronologia, tecnologia lítica, subsistência (fauna), sepultamentos, mobilidade, uso do espaço em abrigos naturais e arte rupestre / Between the central and southern traditions - Archaeological study of seven elements related to hunter-gatherer groups and their implications for the preceramic occupation of the \"Carstic Region of the Upper São Francisco River Valley\", Minas Gerais, Brazil: chronology, lithic technology, subsistence (fauna), burials, mobility, use of space in rock-shelters and rock-artKoole, Edward Karel Maurits 11 August 2014 (has links)
This thesis brings a first archaeological framework for the pre-ceramic occupation of a carstic area situated in the upper São Francisco river valley, also known as the Pains region, with an area of about 1500 km², in the central-western portion of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This was done by the study of seven elements related to these populations: chronology (relative and absolute), technology (lithic and bone), subsistence (faunal remains), burials, mobility, use of space in rock-shelters and rock-art. The most relevant findings were made in excavations and test-pits by artificial levels of 10 cm in four limestone rock-shelter sites, distributed in eleven different places or sectors, all of them from the drip-line to the interior of the shelters, with a total area of 28m². The most important site is the \"Gruta do Marinheiro\" cave, where 20m² were excavated. After the analysis of the different types of materials by level, sector and site, the quantitative and qualitative vertical changes were studied in search for tendencies, ruptures and/or transformations. The horizontal variations between sectors were also observed. These analysis showed that the rock-shelters were intensely occupied in the first three millennia of the Holocene, between ca. 10200 and 7200 years BP, associated with an unifacial and bifacial lithic industry and faunal remains, indicating they hunted small and middle-sized mammals, fished mainly Siluriformes and gathered Gastropoda. They buried their dead in a variety of manners, in patterns that are also seen in other rock-shelters of Minas Gerais associated with the paleo-indian occupation. Looking at 27 known rock-shelters in the region with pre-ceramic evidence, it was also possible to see that they were present in all main topographical areas of this limestone region, indicating a high mobility within it, but also showing some connections with areas outside, as seen by very similar lithic material found by amateurs in the \"Lago de Furnas\" area (80 km to the SW). There is also circumstantial evidence that could relate these groups to the \"Planalto\" rock-art tradition. Finally we argue that there are many elements that put the Pains region close archaeologically to the better-known Lagoa Santa region, situated 200 km to the NE.

Formas arquitetônicas clássicas em edifícios religiosos do Período Bizantino / Classical Architectural Forms in Religious Buildings During the Byzantine PeriodRezende, Regina Helena 16 March 2007 (has links)
The goal of this dissertation is the identification and study of Graeco-roman architectural forms - classical forms - that were preserved in early Christian churches built in the Palestinian area. The chronological scope is from the first half of the IVth. century, under Constantine\'s rule, to the end of the VIth. century AD. Studying these three centuries, we tried to recognize which basic architectural shapes had been part of early Christian churches and which classical shapes were preserved. We tried to go beyond the building materials, looking for ancient ideas and values still in use in this age of transformation, called Byzantine Period, when the new concepts of an arising culture were starting to achieve material forms.

Reconstitution paléogéographique et prospection archéologique en zone littorale par approches géophysiques multi-méthodes et multi-échelles / Paleo-geographical reconstitution and archaeological survey in coastal area by multi-method and multi-scale geophysical approachesBruniaux, Guillaume 07 December 2017 (has links)
Archaeological study of a site is based on an excavation which is a comprehensive study on a restricted gap. Before excavation, geophysical survey supplies the possibility to locate an area likely to provide details by detailed mapping of the site. This PhD work focus on an original magnetic survey protocol to detect pluri-metric and pluri-decimetric structures and a methodological approach to estimate the conservation of an archaeological level occupation. These developments have provided maximum information on anthropogenic settlement and to target excavation zone according to the archaeological problem of the site. In coastal zones and according to the considered chronological period, the environment of the settlement was different. The relatively rapid change in coastal environments results from the rise of sea level since the end of the last glacial maximum. As part of a paleoenvironmental study of a site, the objective of geophysical survey is similar to that for excavation : locating an area to paleoenvironmental coring. The methodological approach developed in this work is based on a paleogeographic approach to the site environment using multi-method and multi-scale geophysical surveys. Electromagnetic survey (Slingram), electrical tomography and direct-push electrical resistivity logging provide a cartographic and stratigraphic representation of the geophysical contrasts of the subsurface. Two study areas were selected to test and implement these methodological approaches, the Neolithic site of Le Pontet (Charente-Maritime) and the ancient harbours of Narbonne. These two sites are in different archaeological, geographical and geological contexts.

Analyse structurale (terre-mer) de l’Est de la Crimée : conséquences sur l’évolution tectonique de la marge nord de la Mer Noire orientale / Structural analysis of the Eastern Crimean mountains (onland-offshore) : consequence of the tectonic evolution of the northern margin of the eastern Black SeaKorniyenko Sheremet, Yevgeniya 13 July 2016 (has links)
This study is focused on the main structural features of the Eastern Crimean Mountains (CM) and of their closest offshore, with a purpose to derive and reconstruct the tectonic evolution of the northern inverted margin of the Eastern Black Sea. This study was inspired because the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic age of the oldest exposed flysch-like rocks (so-called Tauric Group) “was” defined as 60 to 110 my younger, namely as the Albian (Middle Cretaceous). The aim of this thesis was to obtain by field observations, new dating of rocks, structural analysis, stress-field analysis and seismic interpretation allowing reconsidering the geology of the CM. The main findings of the thesis are: (1) the Lower Cretaceous sediments have a much wider spatial distribution in the Eastern CM; (2) the presence of two flysch units of different age: the youngest flysch unit of the Early Cretaceous age and the oldest, the Tauric Gp and Middle-Jurassic flysch; (3) the structural analysis in the Eastern CM resulted in new structural geological map of the Eastern CM and showed the evidence of extensional tectonics during the Cretaceous and of compressional structures during the Cenozoic; (4) two-stage compression: 1) during the Paleocene-Early Eocene and 2) during the Oligocene-Middle Pliocene were confirmed by interpretation of seismic lines offshore, correlated with the “Subbotina-403” well; (5) both geological and geophysical data in the on-and- off shore transects evidence connection of structures in the northern inverted Black Sea margin; (6) the paleostress analysis of the brittle fault-slip data allow distinguishing of several tectonic regimes responsible for the developments of main tectonic structures of the study area; (8) finally, this thesis presents a new vision of the tectonic evolution of the northern inverted part of the Eastern Black Sea illustrated with paleotectonic maps providing the reconstruction for each main stage of its geological history since the Late Triassic.

To the north of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone, from North to South, the obliquity of the subduction is decreasing. This study is focus on the consequences of the entrance of Bahamas bank buoyant plateau into the subduction by studying stress field evolution in the NE of the Caribbean plate since Eocene. This work show that the volcanic arc activity on Anguilla bank islands begin at the Eocene. The volcanic arc migration toward his actual localisation occurs during early Miocene – late Miocene period. The Oligo-Miocene period is transitional as a switch in the stress field from pure parallel-to-the-trench to radial extension occurs. A restoration of the regional deformation shows that this switch is related to strain partitioning initiation in the upper Caribbean Plate in response to trench bending that followed the entrance of the Bahamas Bank in the subduction zone. In the Guadeloupean archipelago, kinematic analyses onshore and offshore show a pure extension with a perpendicular-to-the-trench σ3. The similar faults orientations since Eocene confirm that inherited structures control strain localisation. At present day, in NE corner of the Lesser Antilles, the NW-SE main extensional direction of strike-slip stress regime is trench-parallel. In the Guadeloupean archipelago, the pure extensive stress regime is trench-perpendicular (NE-SW). These different orientations of the stress field are interpreted to be the result of increasing trench bending to the North responsible for a northern increase of subduction obliquity
