Protestní paradigma: Rámcování hnutí Black Lives Matter a nastolování agendy v českých médiích / The Protest Paradigm: Framing of Black Lives Matter movement and Agenda-setting in Czech Media

Vogl, Marek January 2022 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the framing of the Black Lives Matter movement and related protests in the Czech news media. The aim of this work is to reveal the way in which the Czech media informed about the Black Lives Matter movement with the help of quantitative content framing analysis. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of social and media construction of reality by Berger and Luckmann, which plays the role of an overarching theory. It also deals with the agenda-setting theory, which it expands with the concept of framing. The agenda-setting theory describes the ability of the mass media to influence the significance of topics in the eyes of the public. The theoretical part also describes a brief history of the Black Lives Matter movement and the events that led to its emergence. Furthermore, the relationship of the mass media to racism is introduced and the concept of the protest paradigm is introduced. The work then describes the previous findings of the protest paradigm, which are then used in the analytical part. The methodological part then presents the research goal, questions and hypotheses, defines the sample set and the research method used, including the characteristics of individual variables. The analytical part of the thesis presents the results of the...

Multiparadigmatická výuka společenských věd na střední škole / Multiparadigmatic Teaching of Social Sciences in High School

Charvát, Štěpán January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to present a specific type of teaching of social sciences in high school, namely the multiparadigmatic type. In accordance with the multiparadigmatic character of social sciences, this teaching type accentuates the plurality of approaches to a given social topic and does not indoctrinate the learner with one specific approach or paradigm. The theoretical part of this diploma thesis describes the concept of scientific paradigms, mostly on the basis of the findings of philosopher T. S. Kuhn, who addresses this issue in the context of natural sciences. Next, it is explained why the concept of paradigms can be related to social sciences and how these two science areas differ. The multiparadigmatic character of social sciences is then applied to their didactics, where selected methodological aspects of multiparadigmatic teaching are discussed, such as the choice of paradigms, working with them, and the attitude of the teacher. This part of the diploma thesis also illustrates the concepts of monoparadigmatism and multiparadigmatism with the comparison of two didactic manuals and two curricular documents from various environments. Furthermore, it describes the reasons for the employment of multiparadigmatic teaching as well as its conditions and limitations. The...

How wellbeing economic projects help contribute to a paradigm shift : Altering the path to a Wellbeing Economy

Leth, Malin, Al-Ali, Basil January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to look at the processes used when creating wellbeing economic projects to further understand what key themes there are. It applies Path-Dependency theory, consisting of Path-Dependence and Path-Creation to see if the chosen aspects are relevant to creating wellbeing projects and altering the path from the Anthropocene. Analysis is conducted on 45 implemented wellbeing economic projects from the Wellbeing Economy Alliance. After formulating questions based on this, interviews are carried out with ten experienced wellbeing leaders to gain a deeper understanding of what could be learned from their experiences of success and failure within wellbeing projects. The main findings of the study show that to effectively alter the path, power should be dispersed between as many people as possible, people are driven by a larger vision than specifics and it is essential for governments and the private sector to communicate with people to understand what they value in regards to wellbeing.

An Investigation into the Current Status of the Paradigm Shift in Technical Writing Textbook Pedagogy.

Byrd, Terre D.M. 04 May 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether a paradigm shift is occurring or has occurred in technical writing textbooks since 1994. This study will further the work of Jerold J. Jeansonne, who chronicled the paradigm shift in technical writing textbooks from 1900 to 1994. Using product and process orientation guidelines, this thesis will examine several technical writing textbooks produced after 1994. The findings will then be calculated to determine the present status of the paradigm shift. The thesis will also propose that the technical writing paradigm shift mirrors the paradigm shift in academic writing textbooks. To make this connection, the rhetoric of Aristotle will be employed to show that textbooks, whether they are academic or technical, are essentially argumentative. In light of this, particular attention will be given to Aristotle's characteristics of artistic argument: rational, ethical, and emotional appeal.

Ecologically Friendly Food Buying and Recycling: Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors in a Tennessee Survey.

King, Jessica Jane 01 May 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis focuses on pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors and the interactions between recycling behavior, food buying attitudes, food buying behaviors, and ecological beliefs. Following an introductory chapter, I present an article-length paper on recycling behavior to be submitted to Environment and Behavior. Data for this study came from a telephone survey of Tennessee residents (N=270). Using OLS regression analysis, I find that recycling behavior is significantly related to access to recycling facilities. I do not find a significant interaction effect between access to recycling facilities and willingness to recycle. I conclude by suggesting that pro-environmental policies need to make structural resources more available to all in order to promote recycling (and protect the environment in general). Positive attitudes alone do not get us very far. My additional thesis research goal of developing an accurate measure of ecological food buying attitudes and behaviors needs further work.

Innehåll och ämnessyn efter ny läroplan 2022 : Textanalys av kursplan och läromedel i svenskämnet

Söderström, Per January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to explore what subject view is expressed in the new syllabus of 2022. Furthermore, since the textbooks used in school can be included in an expanded curriculum concept and many textbooks are produced according to the content of the curriculum this study aims to investigate if older textbooks could still be seen as relevant after the introduction of the new curriculum. According to Lyngfelt (2006, p. 98) research on textbooks used in the Swedish subject is scarce. Therefore, the study uses a thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarkes (2006) model to answer these research questions: Which subject view can be discerned in the changes in the core content in the syllabus? Are all changes in the core content for the Swedish subject covered in the selected textbook? Which changes in the core content in the syllabus are covered most and least? The results show that the textbooks cover the additions in the core content, especially with respect to non-fiction texts. However, the textbooks’ cover in orality is scarcer. The study is based on the paradigms of Sawyer and Van de Ven (2006) and the most prominent subject paradigm in the core content is the communicative paradigm, but traces of all the paradigms used in the study was found in the new additions.

The Ecological Importance of Extrinsic and Intrinsic Drivers of Animal Movement

Rasmussen, Josh Earl 11 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The movement of individuals is foundational to many ecological processes. For example, the movement of an organism from one place to another alters population density at both sites and has potential for affecting the genetic dynamics within the new population. Individual movement events may be in synchrony with overall trends in populations, e.g. spawning migrations, or may be atypical (asynchronous). This latter movement type can affect population and metapopulation dynamics, depending on its prevalence within a population. Nevertheless, given the complexity of interactions, the causative factors of movement are understood vaguely, much less for aquatic organisms. Drivers of movement are extrinsic (e.g. habitat quality, predation or habitat heterogeneity) and intrinsic (e.g. sex, size, or behavioral tendencies). Interactions among these drivers provide crucial insight into the patterns of movement observed within populations. Habitat is here shown to affect observed movement patterns of populations of southern leatherside chub (Lepidomeda aliciae). Streams with higher-quality habitat were inhabited by populations exhibiting lower overall movement compared to lower-quality streams. However, observations of individual long distance movement relative to the norm within the population suggest that movement may also be behaviorally based. In further tests, it is shown that, indeed, behavioral tendencies of individuals can be measured and are predictive of annual movement by individuals. Other drivers, habitat availability and quality, were also found to influence movement on a yearly basis. Movement patterns are also affected by the presence or absence of predators. A tropical livebearer (Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora) has a higher percentage of individuals classified as generally moving when predators are absent from the environment compared to predator sites. Predation environment also significantly affects individual body shape with predator sites possessing caudal peduncles with greater surface area, an adaptation likely promoting burst speed for greater escape abilities. Classification of individuals as generally moving or generally not moving was also significantly related to variation of body shape of these fish. However, biological significance is ambiguous given the absence of obvious morphology trends explained by this factor. It is critical to understand these drivers to better understand the dynamic interface between ecology and evolution.

Examining the Tools Used to Infer Models of Lexical Activation: Eye-tracking, Mouse-tracking, and Reaction Time

Levy, Joshua 07 November 2014 (has links)
Most models of auditory word recognition describe the activation of lexical items in a continuous and graded manner. Much evidence in favor of these models comes from the visual-world paradigm, using either eye fixations or computer cursor trajectories as dependent measures. In particular, Spivey, Grosjean and Knoblich (2005) relied on their observation of unimodality in the distribution of cursor trajectories to argue in favor of a single cognitive process consistent with a continuous model of lexical activation. The present study addresses two questions: (1) whether the logic of inferring the number of cognitive processes from distributional analyses can be extended to a different dependent variable – reaction times, and (2) how robust the distribution of cursor trajectories is to changes in cursor speed (mouse gain). In Experiment 1, eye movements and reaction times were recorded in a visual-world paradigm and reaction times were modeled using ex-Gaussian curve-fitting. Participants responded slower to trials with a phonological competitor presented alongside the target than to trials with a control image presented alongside the target. Crucially, this difference was manifested as a shifting of the distribution rather than as a skewing of the distribution and lends additional support for a continuous model of lexical activation. Experiment 2 measured eye and mouse movements concurrently in a similar visual-world task to investigate the relationship between these two dependent measures at the level of the individual trial. In addition, Experiment 2 manipulated the speed of the cursor (mouse gain) between subjects. The low mouse gain served to reduce the effect of phonological competition. Moreover, the shape of the distribution of cursor trajectories across phonological competitor and control conditions was indistinct with low mouse gain, while the shape of the distributions across the two conditions differed with high mouse gain. This effect of mouse gain shows that the distribution of cursor trajectories is not robust to changes in mouse gain. Moreover, it raises questions about the strength of the linking hypothesis necessary to interpret the distribution of cursor trajectories.

Ranking risks and opportunities of African cities : - A data-driven model to support MNE’s FDI strategies

Marby, Josephine, Chen, Ying January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to build a model that incorporates current data of Africa, both regarding risks and opportunities into a strategic framework that should enable a more informed foreign direct investment decision for multinational enterprises (MNEs). The parameters used in the model were carefully chosen as determinants to foreign direct investment (FDI) based on extensive literature reviews. The model currently covers 101 major cities in 40 African countries. The model calculates and ranks indexes of African cities in terms of prospective investment opportunities. It is a general model with the flexibility of adapting to the user’s specific needs, since they can be highly heterogeneous depending on the industry and the type of to FDI considers. To test the validity of the model, standardized weights were used and the results were compared to current reports of FDI inflows to Africa. The results given by the model were to some extent compliable with the result of current FDI inflows, which thereby can be seen as sign of validity.
