Etude des mécanismes de formation des patines manganésifères des grès du château de Lunéville / Study of the formation mechanisms of the palace of Lunéville sandstones’ manganese patinas

Gatuingt, Laure 13 December 2017 (has links)
The formation of iron and/or manganese black patina on sandstone buildings is a phenomenon observed for various environments but which is not fully understood yet. The palace of Lunéville, in eastern France, is an interesting example because it has patinas that have developed in different conditions : some seem to have grown naturally while others have appeared on stones which were exposed to a fire. These stones experienced an increase of their surface temperature, but most of all, they were subjected to a substantial volume of water as part of attempts to extinguish the fire. The goal of this thesis is to understand the formation of the patinas by investigating different sandstone facies collected from the palace of Lunéville and from quarry. In order to understand the influence of the sandstones intrinsic parameters, the patinated and unpatinated facies were compared from petrophysical, chemical and mineralogical point of view, using laboratory techniques (optical and electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrometry, permeability, porosity and capillarity measurements, ...) and large instruments (Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) on the AGLAE proton accelerator, X-ray micro-diffraction analysis and X-ray absorption micro spectroscopy (XANES) at the SOLEIL synchrotron). In addition to this characterization, patinas coming from different environments were also compared in order to extract the main extrinsic parameters. Finally, the dynamical aspect of the release of manganese from the sandstones was investigated by conducting dissolution experiments at various pH, and by demonstrating the possibility to recreate a Mn patina in laboratory, using sandstone imbibition techniques. The results allow to propose a model for the patina formation based on the dissolution of the Mn-phases initially present in the sandstones’ bulks, followed by the migration through the porous network towards the surface of the ions released in the solution

Study of Silver Deposition on Silicon (100) by IR Spectroscopy and Patina Formation Study of Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Ruthenium or Platinum

Yang, Fan 08 1900 (has links)
To investigate conditions of silver electroless deposition on silicon (100), optical microscope, atomic force microscope (AFM) and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy were used. Twenty second dipping in 0.8mM AgNO3/4.9% solution coats a silicon (100) wafer with a thin film of silver nanoparticles very well. According to AFM results, the diameter of silver particles is from 50 to 100nm. After deposition, arithmetic average of absolute values roughness (Ra) increased from ~0.7nm to ~1.2nm and the root mean square roughness (Rq) is from ~0.8nm to ~1.5nm. SCN- ions were applied to detect the existence of silver on silicon surface by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and IR spectra demonstrate SCN- is a good adsorbent for silver metal. Patina is the general name of copper basic salts which forms green-blue film on the surface of ancient bronze architectures. Patina formation has been found on the surface of platinum or ruthenium after several scans of cyclic voltammetry in 2mM CuSO4/0.1M K2SO4, pH5 solution. Evidence implies that oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) triggers the patina formation. ORR is an important step of fuel cell process and only few sorts of noble metals like platinum can be worked as the catalyst of ORR. Mechanisms of patination involving ORR were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, optical microscope, AFM, rotating disk electrode and other experimental methods: the occurrence of ORR cause the increase of local pH on electrode, and Cu2+ ions prefer to form Cu2O by reduction. Patina forms while Cu2O is oxidizing back to Cu2+.

Interfacial Study of Copper Electrodeposition with the Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM)

Ojeda Mota, Oscar Ulises 05 1900 (has links)
The electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) has been proven an effective mean of monitoring up to nano-scale mass changes related to electrode potential variations at its surface. The principles of operation are based on the converse piezoelectric response of quartz crystals to mass variations on the crystal surface. In this work, principles and operations of the EQCM and piezo-electrodes are discussed. A conductive oxide, ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is a promising material to be used as a diffusion barrier for metal interconnects. Characterization of copper underpotential deposition (UPD) on ruthenium and RuO2 electrodes by means of electrochemical methods and other spectroscopic methods is presented. Copper electrodeposition in platinum and ruthenium substrates is investigated at pH values higher than zero. In pH=5 solutions, the rise in local pH caused by the reduction of oxygen leads to the formation of a precipitate, characterized as posnjakite or basic copper sulfate by means of X-ray electron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The mechanism of formation is studied by means of the EQCM, presenting this technique as a powerful in-situ sensing device.

Tyresö gymnasium, en restaurering. / Tyresö upper secondary school, a restoration.

Thunström, Ida January 2014 (has links)
Restoration is about saving something of the existing and use it, whether it is a structure, a memory, a part or the internal air mass. The question is why, in some cases, save a piece of wood from the 1700s that are crooked and worn out, when you could replace it with a straight instead, but paint it the same color. There is something in that worn piece of wood that conveys something to us. Perhaps the feeling that we are part of a history and a context. In projects that are about restoration architects work with the handling of the history but also the creation of the future. That is what is so fascinating about restoration, as Ove Hidemark so great puts it; "... The past is constantly present in the moment, and with the present moment, it is in the same time in the future." The view of each building and each restoration as unique has really emerged during the 1900s. Sigurd Curman began to formulate ideas about preserving the "signs of history" in a building, which you can call patina, precisely because it had something, not because there were no resources to renovate it. These ideas have continued to develop and reached its peak with Ove Hidemarks thoughts on how he sees the buildings as they all have their own personality. To then shape something as an architect in the building while maintaining respect for the object's patina and past lives, means that the only justice towards it is not to mimic it or try to copy but to create something that can speak with the old and architecturally coexist. Examples of this are seen in the Neues Museum by Chipperfield´s and their work with surfaces and its low-key supplementing them, in Skokloster castle through Hidemark´s respect for the all-time additions and the existing and added materials relationshisp, Lacaton & Vassals´ decision to leave a park as it was, and Rachel Whiteread´s conservation of a building through casted interior of it. The architect's role in the restoration work will be to go to the object or location, and first and foremost to look. See what is there and picture it in words, text, image, sketch drawing etc. By making the selection the architect says something about the value of these things. It is an exercise of power, to determine what is of value to shape or not, but also what is of value to let live on into the future. Tyresö upper secondary school was built in two phases, 1978 and 1981. Our mission from the School of Architecture includes a program of 1,500 sq.m. residential which you can choose to place inside the existing school. I have chosen this line and my starting point is to build on what exists and preserve it as much as possible. I have tried to, in simple ways, transform the school into housing. I have tested my theory that a home with signs from what it once was is a more enjoyable home than a home without any tracks at all. My method is inspired by Ove Hidemark from where I tried to get to know the building and investigate it as much as possible. I have gone there and documented through sketches, drawings and photos things that I considered are of high spatial quality. These large and small parts of the building have been my starting point for the creation of the new homes. I have tried to draw the dwellings around these parts so that each apartment has its special detail reminiscent of the past. Tracks that are signs of history.

Concerning Conserving

Ollinen, Carin, Streiffert, Filip January 2019 (has links)
What is it in old industrial environments that fascinates us? Is there a value in preservingrusty doors, worn facades and cracked asphalt where the grass penetrates? We want toinvestigate how different preservation strategies affect design transformations in urbanharbour areas. With the help of literature and interviews, we examine conservation basedon antiquarian- and aesthetic points of departure. The place we chose as a study object isthe Varvsstaden area in Malmö, which is currently undergoing a major transformation, where the old industrial environment is adapted to new urban uses. Our analysis show that the term conservation entails different expectations among variousstakeholders in the urban development process, and that it is therefore meaningful toextend the discussion about the concept.

DIRT & The Prison of Stained Acceptance

Makara, Viktor January 2022 (has links)
Studying the societal and spatial implications of dirt and its inherent out-of-placeness brought forth a heuristic exploration of heterotopic spatial qualities within the realm of architecture. Taking on the metaphorical role of dirt, the prison is juxtaposed with its societally defined counterpart, the museum. An architectural form began to take place via the implementation of interpretations and a general ambiguity derived from the strange merger of the two ‘counterparts’. The Prison of Stained Acceptance questions and tests boundaries of acceptance within societal stigmatization of otherness, furthermore, inquires the efficacy of out-of-placeness on humanity indoctrinated into a defined good/clean and bad/dirty. With a focus on humaneness and egality, the prison tests the possible outcomes within the occurrence of power shift – from a governing/guarding body to the inmates and architecture. The heterotopic nature of the proposal perhaps raises more questions than it answers, however, it became imperative to sprout a debate within its eclecticism. Rather than defending a direct conclusion this thesis focuses on provocation and thought.
