Zhodnocení efektivity Rady bezpečnosti OSN: případ operací v afrických zemích / Assessing the Effectiveness of the United Nations Security Council: case of operations in the African countriesViryasova, Natalia January 2020 (has links)
Over the past decades, peace missions of the United Nations on the African continent succeed and failed. This thesis attempts to ascertain how success or failure can be explained. For assessment, the success criteria are derived from the academic literature and subsequently implemented into the hypotheses. Relevant indicators concerning peacekeeping success are used in African cases. The effectiveness of UN missions is fully investigated on UNOCI in Côte d'Ivoire, MONUC in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and UNMIL in Liberia. Then the results were compared in tested hypotheses. The findings show that host country's consent and willingness to cooperate, alongside the active engagement of major power, a clear, appropriate and achievable mandate, and the consistency of the UN's commitment to conflict resolution proved to be the most important factors for the peacekeeping effectiveness. The diplomacy and attention, given to underlying causes of conflicts, also contributed to the successful outcomes. The ethnic component and participating regional organisations, in contrast, overcomplicated the peace efforts but did not have a direct impact on missions' effectiveness. The effect of the missions' duration was found to be irrelevant, while ties to success with criteria of national ownership and...

Operace na udržení míru OSN na počátku 90. let 20. století: Hodnocení výsledků operací druhé generace s mandáty kapitoly VII / UN Peacekeeping in the Early 1990s: Evaluation of the outcomes of second-generation operations with Chapter VII mandatesMatějková, Monika January 2020 (has links)
This Master's Thesis is devoted to the United Nations peacekeeping, particularly second- generation operations in the early 1990s and their evaluation. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the (lack of) success of the selected missions, which were the first examples of operations authorized under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations. The theoretical part focuses on the concept of peacekeeping itself, historical development, types of peace operations and literature review, as there are various criteria on how to evaluate peacekeeping missions. For the purpose of this thesis, the work examines three peace operations - the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), the United Nations Missions in Somalia (UNOSOM I and UNOSOM II) and the United Nations Observer Mission in Liberia (UNOMIL). The case studies provide a brief overview of the conflict, the main roots of the conflict, a response from the international community, deployment of the mission and its evaluation according to the selected framework. Furthermore, the supplementary discussion regarding the development and situation in the country in the aftermath of the mission's withdrawal enriches the case study. The thesis concludes with the evaluation of the outcomes of second-generation operations with Chapter VII mandates and aims...

UN Peacekeeping Operations : How do UN peacekeeping missions affect the host country’s economy?Pamliden, Frida, Hellgren, Elsa January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis we aim to examine the economic impact of peacekeeping provided by the United Nations (UN) in conflict-affected countries around the globe. The main interest of this thesis is to estimate the possible economic impact that UN peacekeeping operations may have had on conflict-affected countries’ economies between 1989-2019. We aim to do this by investigating if there is a positive causal relationship between UN peacekeeping operation (PKO) and GDP/capita. This is done by examining previous research and conducting an empirical analysis using a difference-in-differences method. Our model examines the change in GDP/capita levels for both a treatment and non-treatment group, defining PKO as treatment. Data on the conflicts, UN peacekeeping operations and other relevant variables was collected from well-established open sources. The results imply that PKO has a positive impact on GDP/capita development, but that the effect most likely goes through the effect that PKO has on our mediator variables, that in turn positively affect GDP levels. Furthermore, our results indicate that the size of the mission, in terms of military strength, does seem to increase the economic effect.

Rostoucí role Číny v africké bezpečnosti / Growing Role of China in African SecurityKvětová, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
Chinese economic expansion in Africa is a widely discussed topic, but less academic attention is being paid to the role China plays in African security. Since the late 1990s Chinese activity in Africa had been growing rapidly. Beijing's interests are predominantly economic, mostly represented by market seeking and foreign direct investments, and political, generally perceived as a mutual support in international organizations. The thesis focuses on the traditional principle of non-interference in how Chinese policy towards African security has been evolving together with growing Chinese interests on the continent. The People's Republic of China influences African security matters in four areas: diplomatic involvement, arms deals, support and financing, and military cooperation. By analyzing those areas with a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, concrete cases have been identified, when China interfered in internal affairs of particular states, thus altering its policy of non- interference towards more pragmatic and case by case based approach.

Peace and Peacekeeping - A Russian Perspective : An ideational approach to the Russian perception of peaceHardell, Georg January 2020 (has links)
The role of the United Nations in international peace and peacekeeping has traditionally been supported by the Russian Federation, promoting the UN as a central actor in international politics and using force in the establishment of peace in Russian peacekeeping operations. However, blocking several military interventions and UN resolutions on peacekeeping and criticising the use of the UN as a political tool for western states, the Russian perception of peace in the UN remains uncharted. In an attempt to provide new knowledge to the Russian perception of peace, this thesis investigates Russian ideas of peace expressed in national policy documents and UN Security Council statements between 2019 and 2020, concerning the establishment of peace in international conflicts. Using an ideational analysis, Russian ideas of peace are interpreted according to the theoretical framework of situational and relational peace, developed by Jarstad et al. (2019), examining peace as situational security and political order, and as a relational behaviour, attitudes and ideas. The analysis reveals that Russian ideas can be interpreted as characterised by both situational and relational peace, promoting peace and peacekeeping based on international law, establishing security and stability through peaceful means of conflict management rather than promoting forceful military means. Further, ideas of peacekeeping are interpreted as promoting a return to status quo, and state responsibility.

The Relationship Between SEA Allegations in Peacekeeping Missions and Values of Gender Equality : A Qualitative Comparative Cross-Case StudyBergström, Embla January 2022 (has links)
This paper investigates the relationship between gender equality and SEA allegations in peacekeeping missions with the help of structural focused questions aiming to answer; How does UN troop-contributing countries' gender equality affect their SEA allegations during peacekeeping missions? The paper focuses on the troop-contributing countries, selected through Mill’s Method of Difference, Morocco and Bangladesh in the missions MONUSCO and MINUSCA. The results indicate a significance with the hypothesis as the empirical information shows fewer SEA allegations in both missions by Bangladesh, who also appear to have made more domestic attempts to create structural changes for gender equal standards.

Peacekeepers Protecting Civilians, Under the Threat of Violence : A quantitative cross-national analysis on how the risk of violence towards peacekeepers affects their ability to protect civiliansLewenhaupt, Emil January 2022 (has links)
While peacekeeping operations have been researched for decades, due to a lack of data there are still many aspects of peacekeeping that remain unexplored. However, with the introduction of the Peacemakers at Risk dataset a wide array of dynamics and relationships can now be researched. This thesis uses this dataset and others in order to study the risk of violence towards peacekeepers and its effects on the peacekeepers’ ability to protect civilians. My main claim is that due to a shift in priorities, peacekeepers that are exposed to risks of violence have a decreased capacity to protect civilians which leads to increased civilian casualties. The study utilizes a time-series cross-sectional quantitative approach in order to study this relationship. After the introduction of control variables, drawn from the literature, to the multivariate regression, the study finds that there is no statistical significance to the relationship supported in the existing data. However, the study can ultimately not draw a generalizable conclusion due to a lack of observations.

UNDERSTANDING THE PARTICIPATION OF MIDDLE POWERS IN UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING: CASE STUDIES OF CANADA AND THE REPUBLIC OF KOREAJieyeon Kim (17538480) 04 December 2023 (has links)

This dissertation investigates the involvement of middle powers in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKOs), specifically focusing on Canada and the Republic of Korea. The primary objective of this research is to comprehend the motives and behaviors of middle powers when engaging in peacekeeping efforts and to identify the key factors that influence their decisions. To achieve this goal, a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and documentary analyses, is employed. The analysis draws data from government documents, reports, academic articles, and United Nations databases.

The political, security, economic, institutional, and normative rationales identified by Bellamy and Williams (2013) have a substantial influence on the involvement of middle powers in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKOs). Although some rationales might hold greater prominence, the study recognizes that each rationale affects the choices made by middle powers to participate in UNPKOs. The research presents five hypotheses aimed at elucidating middle powers' engagement in UNPKOs and investigates the factors influencing countries' decisions to take part in these operations, particularly focusing on middle powers. The case studies of Canada and the Republic of Korea provide valuable insights into the diverse factors influencing middle powers' engagement in UNPKOs.

The study's findings hold implications for policymakers and practitioners in the field of middle powers and peacekeeping operations. Comprehending the factors influencing middle powers and their motivations can guide the development of effective strategies for engaging these actors and leveraging their unique capabilities in achieving peace and security objectives.
