Grammatical correctness and communicative ability : a performance analysis of the written and spoken English of Swedish learners

Bergström, Inger January 1987 (has links)
Written and oral material produced by a group of low-achieving learners of English from the 2-year lines of the Swedish upper secondary school was analysed from the perspective of grammatical correctness and communicative ability. The grammatical analysis focussed on the verb phrase and tests included both free production in speech and writing and elicitation tests. Communicative ability was assessed ‘ ‘objectively* ’ by identifying such parameters as fluency, copiousness and span, and “holistically” by using non-expert evaluators. The scores thus obtained were correlated. Grammatical correctness was correlated with communicative ability both in speech and in writing and writing proficiency was correlated with speech proficiency with respect to both grammatical correctness and communicative ability. Our findings are that there is a positive correlation between grammatical correctness and communicative ability. A remarkable finding is that the percentage of correct verb phrases correlates very weakly with communicative ability in written data. In oral data, the correlation is in fact slightly negative. The learner’s competence in grammar is reflected in both his written and oral performance. On the other hand, there is no correlation between communicative ability in writing and communicative ability in speech. The study shows that a working command of a set of syntactic rules is essential for communication. Errors are, however, an integral part of the learning process. The major part of errors are accounted for by the learner’s use of compensatory strategies. Among these low-achievers, communicative ability in conversation is distinct from writing ability. / digitalisering@umu

Indoor localization and mobility management in the emerging heterogeneous wireless networks

Papapostolou, Apostolia 31 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Over the last few decades, we have been witnessing a tremendous evolution in mobile computing, wireless networking and hand-held devices. In the future communication networks, users are anticipated to become even more mobile demanding for ubiquitous connectivity to different applications which will be preferably aware of their context. Admittedly, location information as part of their context is of paramount importance from both application and network perspectives. From application or user point of view, service provision can upgrade if adaptation to the user's context is enabled. From network point of view, functionalities such as routing, handoff management, resource allocation and others can also benefit if user's location can be tracked or even predicted. Within this context, we focus our attention on indoor localization and handoff prediction which are indispensable components towards the ultimate success of the envisioned pervasive communication era. While outdoor positioning systems have already proven their potential in a wide range of commercial applications, the path towards a successful indoor location system is recognized to be much more difficult, mainly due to the harsh indoor characteristics and requirement for higher accuracy. Similarly, handoff management in the future heterogeneous wireless networks is much more challenging than in traditional homogeneous networks. Handoff schemes must be seamless for meeting strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the future applications and functional despite the diversity of operation features of the different technologies. In addition, handoff decisions should be flexible enough to accommodate user preferences from a wide range of criteria offered by all technologies. The main objective of this thesis is to devise accurate, time and power efficient location and handoff management systems in order to satisfy better context-aware and mobile applications. For indoor localization, the potential of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies as standalone location sensing technologies are first studied by testing several algorithms and metrics in a real experimental testbed or by extensive simulations, while their shortcomings are also identified. Their integration in a common architecture is then proposed in order to combine their key benefits and overcome their limitations. The performance superiority of the synergetic system over the stand alone counterparts is validated via extensive analysis. Regarding the handoff management task, we pinpoint that context awareness can also enhance the network functionality. Consequently, two such schemes which utilize information obtained from localization systems are proposed. The first scheme relies on a RFID tag deployment, alike our RFID positioning architecture, and by following the WLAN scene analysis positioning concept, predicts the next network layer location, i.e. the next point of attachment to the network. The second scheme relies on an integrated RFID and Wireless Sensor/Actuator Network (WSAN) deployment for tracking the users' physical location and subsequently for predicting next their handoff point at both link and network layers. Being independent of the underlying principle wireless access technology, both schemes can be easily implemented in heterogeneous networks. Performance evaluation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed schemes over the standard protocols regarding prediction accuracy, time latency and energy savings

The improvement of forecasting and inventory management processes in the case of spare parts supply chain

Lazrak, Adnane 02 December 2015 (has links)
The main scope of these works is the spare parts supply chain management, particularly the improvement of forecasting and inventory management performance. The specificity of low and erratic demand does not allow the use of conventional approaches of forecasting. Moreover, the associated performance measurements, based on purely statistical indicators, are not adapted to this context. Indeed, it should align with different levels of expectations of the maintenance contracts. After a presentation of the processes and tools used by the dedicated literature. Here we propose new performance analysis approaches seeking to combine the statistical performance of forecasting methods and inventory management performance while considering decision makers priorities and using demand pattern as well as parts age segmentations. These works also address the use of customer differentiation in the inventory model based on forecasting, by comparing the performance of the critical level policy with the common stock and separated stock policies. Each studied process was associated with a comparative analysis of different forecasting methods and inventory management models based on real data of the spare parts supply chain of GE Healthcare, which allowed us to define a set of methods and parameters recommendations according to both part segmentations and supply chain priorities.

Modélisation et analyse expérimentale d'une centrale solaire photovoltaïque en milieu désertique maritime / Modeling and experimental analysis of a solar photovoltaic plant in a desert maritime environment

Hassan Daher, Daha 06 November 2017 (has links)
The objective of this work has been to develop a model for the behavior of a photovoltaic (PV) plant in an arid zone, to optimize instantaneous production and maintain performance over time. Monitoring data were collected for a solar power plant, which were then studied to infer the impact of climatic factors (temperature, irradiation and dust deposits). Performance analysis techniques including "transposition to reference conditions" (eg. PVUSA) and "estimation of standard performance measures" (eg. PR) were applied to evaluate the annual degradation rate of the facility. A first indication of expected lifetime of PV installations for the climate of Djibouti was thus obtained, as well as a capacity to predict the long-term evolution of the plant and future installations. In parallel, a numerical model of the photovoltaic installation was constructed using TRNSYS, including the modules and inverters, to transcribe the behavior of the PV system as a whole, and also the environmental conditions in which it evolves. The model included in the standard TRNSYS library was improved with the aid of experimental results, in particular with regards the thermal dependence. A predictive model was thus developed combining dust accumulation, an empirical model of module temperatures and degradation. Finally, a parametric study was undertaken with the complete model, to evaluate the impact of cleaning schedules under various dust scenarios. The results will contribute to the optimization of solar power plant design and operation in this type of climate.

Geneves, Sylvain 05 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis studies the performances of data servers on multicores. More precisely, we focus on the scalability with the number of cores. First, we study the internals of an event-driven multicore runtime. We demonstrate that false sharing and inter-core communications hurt performances badly, and prevent applications from scaling. We then propose several optimisations to fix these issues. In a second part, we compare the multicore performances of three Webservers, each reprensentative of a programming model. We observe that the differences between each server's performances vary as the number of cores increases. We are able to pinpoint the cause of the scalability limitation observed. We present one approach and some perspectives to overcome this limit.

Bourgos, Paraskevas 09 April 2013 (has links)
The advent of many-core platforms is nowadays challenging our capabilities for efficient and predictable design. To meet this challenge, designers need methods and tools for guaranteeing essential properties and determining tradeoffs between performance and efficient resource management. In the process of designing a mixed software/hardware system, functional constraints and also extra-functional specifications should be taken into account as an essential part for the design of embedded systems. The impact of design choices on the overall behavior of the system should also be analyzed. This implies a deep understanding of the interaction between application software and the underlying execution platform. We present a rigorous model-based design flow for building parallel applications running on top of many-core platforms. The flow is based on the BIP - Behavior, Interaction, Priority - component framework and its associated toolbox. The method allows generation of a correct-by-construction mixed hardware/software system model for manycore platforms from an application software and a mapping. It is based on source-to-source correct-by-construction transformations of BIP models. It provides full support for modeling application software and validation of its functional correctness, modeling and performance analysis of system-level models, code generation and deployment on target many-core platforms. Our design flow is illustrated through the modeling and deployment of various software applications on two different hardware platforms; MPARM and platform P2012/STHORM. MPARM is a virtual ARM-based multi-cluster manycore platform, configured by the number of clusters, the number of ARM cores per cluster, and their interconnections. On MPARM, the software applications considered are the Cholesky factorization, the MPEG-2 decoding, the MJPEG decoding, the Fast Fourier Transform and the Demosaicing algorithm. Platform 2012 (P2012/STHORM) is a power efficient manycore computing fabric, which is highly modular and based on multiple clusters capable of aggressive fine-grained power management. As a case study on P2012/STHORM, we used the HMAX algorithm. Experimental results show the merits of the design flow, notably performance analysis as well as correct-by-construction system level modeling, code generation and efficient deployment.

In parallel, it s also visible this progress in various sectors of the automation, such as: industrial, commercial and residential. In one of its branches, we find the hospital networks, which can make the use of a range of services, ranging from the simple registration of patients to a surgery by a robot under the supervision of a physician. In the context of both worlds, appear the applications in Telemedicine and Telehealth, which work with the transfer in real time of high resolution images, sound, video and patient data. Then comes a problem, since the computer networks, originally developed for the transfer of less complex data, is now being used by a service that involves high transfer rates and needs requirements for quality of service (QoS) offered by the network . Thus, this work aims to do the analysis and comparison of performance of a network when subjected to this type of application, for two different situations: the first without the use of QoS policies, and the second with the application of such policies, using as scenario for testing, the Metropolitan Health Network of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) / ? not?rio o avan?o das redes de computadores nas ?ltimas d?cadas, seja em rela??o ?s taxas de transmiss?o, ao n?mero de dispositivos interconectados ou mesmo ?s aplica??es existentes. / This work investigates the use of finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters to separate the signals belonging distinct clusters in a clustered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (clustered-OFDM) scheme, when it is applied to power line communication (PLC) system. In this context, we introduce a formulation to take into account the choice of the digital filter for the clustered-OFDM scheme. Based on this formulation, an equation that quantifies the data-rate as a function ofmultichannel signal noise ratio, digital filter design specification and length of the digital filter is presented. Performance analyses based on a previously selected set of digital filters over three scenarios, channel corrupted by additivewhite Gaussian noise (AWGN), indoor PLC channel corrupted by the noise (measured in a residence located in Juiz de Fora city, MG) and outdoor PLC corrupted by the noise (measured in a low voltage distribution network in Juiz de Fora city, MG), are presented. According to numerical results, Chebychev type II, interpolated FIR (IFIR) and equiripple minimum phase FIR digital filters offers the best benefits in terms of less data-rate loss and computer complexity reduction. Considering the influence of the finite precision in these three digital filters, simulation results shows that the quantized Chebychev type II IIR digital filter attains the smallest data-rate loss and, as a consequence, it a very appropriate digital filter for clustered-OFDM schemes.

Performance Analysis of JavaScript

Smedberg, Fredrik January 2010 (has links)
In the last decade, web browsers have seen a remarkable increase of performance, especially in the JavaScript engines. JavaScript has over the years gone from being a slow and rather limited language, to today have become feature-rich and fast. It’s speed can be around the same or half of comparable code written in C++, but this speed is directly dependent on the choice of the web browser, and the best performance is seen in browsers using JIT compilation techniques. Even though the language has seen a dramatic increase in performance, there’s still major problems regarding memory usage. JavaScript applications typically consume 3-4 times more memory than similar applications written in C++. Many browser vendors, like Opera Software, acknowledge this and are currently trying to optimize their memory usage. This issue is hopefully non-existent within a near future. Because the majority of scientific papers written about JavaScript only compare performance using the industry benchmarks SunSpider and V8, this thesis have chosen to widen the scope. The benchmarks really give no information about how JavaScript stands in comparison to C#, C++ and other popular languages. To be able to compare that, I’ve implemented a GIF decoder, an XML parser and various elementary tests in both JavaScript and C++ to compare how far apart the languages are in terms of speed, memory usage and responsiveness.
