Framework for measuring the effectiveness & efficiency of supply chain resilience strategies for supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the purchasing process of food supply chains : A multiple interview study of food retailers

Carroll-Melzer, Chelsea, Marie Reuter, Luisa, Åkesson, Joakim January 2022 (has links)
Background & aims: Prior research has, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting supply chain (SC) disruptions, increased the level of investigations in the field of SC resilience strategies. Even though many studies have been conducted within the field, little is known about the effectiveness and efficiency of those strategies. As food SC’s (FSC’s) are among the most important SC’s in our societies, their conservation is of great importance. As the operational purchasing process within the FSC was one of the areas within the SC that was strongly affected by the pandemic, this process will be the focus of the paper. This study seeks to identify the most applied SC resilience strategies for operational purchasing activities in FSC’s for various SC disruptions from a SME food retailers perspective. Furthermore, a framework of how to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of those strategies will be developed. Method: To collect relevant empirical data to answer the purpose of the study a qualitative multiple-interview study is conducted based on semi-structured interviews with respondents of the three different case companies. The case companies were selected and four interviews with one to two respondents per company were conducted. European SME food retailers of long shelf life goods are used as case companies to investigate the research gaps. Results: The study found out that the application of theory revealed the five most applied SC resilience strategies (SC flexibility, inventory management, end-to-end (E2E) SC visibility (SCV), information technology (IT) tools and SC cooperation) in operational purchasing, differences between SME food retailers according to their company size and maturity level. The KPIs identified to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of these SC resilience strategies were found to be applied. The KPIs provided are the basis for measurement opportunities that should be adapted and expanded depending on the business model and complexity of the company as part of the SC design. Contributions: The study adds value through theoretical and practical contributions of the most applied SC resilience strategies within operational purchasing from a SME food retailer perspective and their performance measurement system for measuring efficiency and effectiveness. Limitation & future research: The study is limited to the Covid-19 pandemic as a major reason for the triggering of the investigated SC disruptions. Further limitations can be seen within the selection of the case companies. Future research should investigate the differences between SME within their application of SC resilience strategies for their operational purchasing activities, just like the differences between strategic and operational purchasing. Key words: supply chain resilience strategy, supply chain disruption, Covid-19 pandemic, supply chain effectiveness, supply chain efficiency, performance measurements, key performance indicator, food supply chain, food retailers, purchasing process, operational purchasing

Measuring Performance of an Order-to-Delivery Process : A study at Scania CV AB

Sundström, Philip, Tollmar, Klara January 2018 (has links)
The Order-to-Delivery (OTD) process covers the entire flow from an initiated order until the productor service is delivered to the customer. OTD is considered a core flow in order to successfully deliverproducts according to the customer’s needs. Therefore, is it of importance to track the performanceof this flow and all intermediary processes through performance measurements. The key to successfulperformance measurement is to identify critical factors that can be measured towards previous states, future goals and industry best-practices. However, there are no standardized solutions that can beadopted. Instead performance measurements need to be adapted to each organization’s capabilities, limitations and needs. Effective performance measures and indicators can help steer a company in theright direction. In this thesis, Scania’s industrial OTD process and the connecting indicators has been studied. Thecompany would like to know possible indicators to measure the performance of this process so that itwill contribute to find deviations, continuous improvement and challenge the current state. There isalso a need to increase the knowledge of how to interpret and manage indicators. The project has been conducted through both empirical and theoretical studies. An extensive literaturereview has been performed. The study concluded in methods and best practices for performancemeasurements, as suggested by literature. It has also resulted in an identification of relevant OTDmeasures. Empirical studies have been conducted through a current state analysis of Scania and acompany comparison. Five companies were interviewed on the topic of performance measurements. The aim was to identify the measurements used in each of the companies OTD flow and to investigateif any best practices could be identified. The empirical findings have been analyzed towards thetheoretical findings in order to find gaps and improvement suggestions. It was found that lead timeand delivery performance are two strategic elements to evaluate a company’s OTD flow.Lastly, a concept has been developed as an additional approach to measure the part of a lead timethat has the largest variance - transport time. The concept can, with further work, be extended toinclude the entire lead time. The aim with the concept was to fairly compare different transport timesagainst each. It is believed that the approach can be used as a tool to visualize the efficiency of thetransport flow to different delivery countries and therefore determine if the country behavesaccording to a normal situation. The thesis has resulted in recommendations to implement new measures that could be of value toScania. Process wise it is suggested to better differentiate between indicators and to improve the waythey are presented and reported. It is also suggested that that quality of the input data and thereporting process for this should be reviewed.

Management of performance appraisal at institutions of Higher Learning : a case of the University of South Africa

Matjila, Maskhosana La-Portia 01 1900 (has links)
The research examines the management of performance appraisal at institutions of higher learning: a case of the University of South Africa (Unisa). Focus is placed on the Unisa, specifically the two administrative departments, DSAR and PGAD in the centre of providing a service to the most important client, the student. The Integrated Performance Management System (IPMS) Policy is a tailor-made system that provides a systematic process for managing the cycle of events associated with ensuring that individual employees achieve their agreed performance outcomes and the university reaches its strategic goals. To enhance and contribute to the effective management of performance, at Unisa, it is necessary to research the performance appraisal system, a process in place to measure the performance of employees, using a performance rating or score to indicate the level of performance. Performance measurement is utilised by organisations to identify the strengths and developmental areas of employee and relations between the employee and the manager a need to facilitate successful operations. Provide feedback to the employees and management respectively, show flaws identified, suggested improvements to the system. To ensure achievement of performance targets and meet the set objectives of the institution, to the benefit of all stakeholders, i.e. the employer, employee and student alike. Ekonomistyrning i svenska skivbolag : en kvalitativ studie om hur svenska skivbolags ekonomistyrning karaktäriseras utifrån ett traditionellt och modernt perspektiv / Management control in Swedish record labels : a qualitative study about how Swedish record labels’ management control are characterized from a traditional and modern perspective

Lejdeby, Robin, Ewerklou, Gustav January 2020 (has links)
Background and problem: Criticism has been raised towards the traditional management control which pushed forward modern management methods and tools to complement management accounting. The factors that pushed out this modern management control are possible to see in the music industry aswell. This, together with the fact that management control in the music industry has a research gap, makes it interesting to examine how record labels in the swedish music industry are using traditional or modern management control. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to through the examination of two record labels create an understanding of how the management control is characterized through traditional or modern management control. Method: The method used in this study is qualitative. We have through a multiple-case study at two record labels examined and created an understanding of the management control in the companies with the help of semi-structured interviews and complementary questions through mail. Conclusion: It is possible to see that the record labels has partly moved to modern management control but also that you can see a mix between the usage of traditional and modern control methods and tools.
