Analysis of the Rhetoric of LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka) in His Campaign to Promote Cultural Black Nationalism

Hart, Madelyn E. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to discover and assess the rhetorical methods employed by LeRoi Jones in the evolution of cultural black nationalism. First, the thesis concentrates on his ethos and philosophy. Second, it analyzes the cultural black nationalism organization in Newark, New Jersey. Third, it discusses the impact of LeRoi Jones on the black cultural nationalism movement. The conclusions drawn from this study reveal that LeRoi Jones was able to attract, maintain, and mold his followers, to build a sizable power base, and to adapt to several audiences simultaneously. Implications of the study are that because of his rigid requirements and a gradual change in ideology, LeRoi Jones is now losing ground as a leader.

Rémillard, Anne 04 1900 (has links)
The identification of the financial and social constraints that underlie Menander’s love plots helps in explaining the arguments contained in the persuasive and dissuasive discourses employed by the various archetypal characters of this literary genre. This research demonstrates that there is a narrow parallel between the rhetoric rooted in these narrative situations and the later works of the Latin love elegists in a way that elucidates some aspects of the elegiac discourse: the poet-narrator positions himself in the situation of the enamoured young man of new comedy and his beloved addressee’s situation corresponds to that of the independent mistress who appears in many comic plots.

In light of the recent literature on the production of this type of text, mapping the areas of mismatch between the suggestions of this literature on the ADT and the effective accomplishment of this type of text by the candidate. The diagnosis should allow the development of a framework that provides teachers with resources that can guide students to write texts that meet the expectations of the academic audience in terms of both structure and language requirements. The difficulty that writing production represents for most students, at all levels of education, is present in the discourse of teachers from the most divergent areas. As for the high school students, as well as the university ones, this difficulty relies on the writing of ADT - the type of text requested for the students, but in which they, according to research, find it difficult to argue, discuss and persuade. For the executive secretary of MEC, Maria Helena Guimarães de Castro, the writing relates to the language performance. With the basic support of Systemic Functional Linguistics - a multiperspective model, designed to give analysts complementary lenses for the interpretation of the language in use. This thesis examines interpersonal aspects related to gender structure - with its stages and purposes, as well as the texture of the ADT, focusing on the lexicalgrammatical choices of the text (cohesion, coherence, modality and evaluation). The research should answer the following questions: (a) What are the interpersonal resources that affect the success of producing an ADT? (b) What role does the gender structure unit play in this issue? and the texture unit? The diagnosis should allow the development of a framework that provides teachers with resources that can guide students to write texts that meet the expectations of the academic audience in terms of both structure and language requirements / O objetivo desta tese é o delineamento de um diagnóstico baseado no exame da unidade de estrutura e de textura de textos dissertativo-argumentativos (TDAs) redigidos por alunos do Ensino Médio e vestibulandos para, à luz da literatura recente sobre a produção desse tipo de texto, mapear as zonas de desencontro entre as sugestões dessa literatura sobre o TDA e a efetiva realização desse tipo de texto pelo candidato.

Paulo and another one in The New York Times concerning the impeachment process which removed Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff from office in 2016. The research focuses on the issue of the representation of the event as well as their social actors in both newspapers, analyzing the correspondence between the choices of certain linguistic forms and the ideologies and relations of power that underlie these forms. Guided by proposals for Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and with the support of the analytical context offered by Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL), the project examines, in particular, two dimensions of the grammar of the clause: transitivity and modality/appraisal, respectively associated to the ideational and interpersonal metafunctions of language, according to SFL. Through this this theoretical-methodological support, it is attempted to unravel both explicit and implicit persuasive processes on which newspapers count to persuade their readers. For this purpose, the research should answer the following questions: (a) how does a transitivity and modality/ appraisal contribute to the persuasive process in editorials? (b) how can the underlying ideology of the two newspapers be revealed? The research shows that the Brazilian editorial "Muitos anos em um" blames government institutions for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, whereas the American editorial "Brazil’s ousted president" attributes responsibility to former president Dilma Roussef. The support of SFL through its ideational and interpersonal metafunctions, as well as complementary theories, were paramount to characterize the persuasion that pervades the editorials to achieve the alignment of the reader with the newspapers’ positions / O objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado é o exame do processo persuasivo que percorre um editorial publicado na Folha de S. Paulo e outro no The New York Times referentes ao impeachment – que destituiu a presidente do Brasil, Dilma Rousseff, em 2016.

Valentinian ethics and paraenetic discourse : determining the social function of moral exhortation in Valentinian Christianity

Tite, Philip L., 1969- January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation sets out to determine the social function of paraenesis ("moral exhortation") within Valentinian Christianity. In order to explicate this social function, this study places the discussion within the context of ancient rhetorical practices of ethical admonition; i.e., how did paraenetic discursive practices act as rhetorical devices for affecting social formation? In order to establish the function of paraenesis, it is necessary to engage both literary and social aspects of the paraenetic genre. The latter is most challenging, given the methodological difficulties inherent in moving from textual context to socio-historical reconstruction of the situation behind a text. To address this problem, a method is adapted from sociology (interactionism) and social psychology (positioning theory) in order to critically gauge the social idealization of the sources. Special attention is given to the paraenetic contours of the Gospel of Truth (NHC I,3) and the Interpretation of Knowledge (NHC XI,1). / This dissertation is structured into five chapters. The first chapter will frame the discussion within current developments in the study of Gnosticism, where there has been a growing appreciation for social and ethical aspects of the Nag Hammadi tractates. A delimitation of the source base for this study will also be offered. Chapter 2 will offer a comprehensive overview of scholarly discussions of paraenesis over the past century. A functional definition, with an attendant typology of paraenetic material will be offered in closing. Chapter 3 directly engages the literary aspects of paraenesis within Valentinianism, placing the discussion within the context of moral exhortation in the Greco-Roman world, and, more specifically, early Christianity. This chapter will establish the presence of paraenesis within the Valentinian sources. Chapter 4 will then address the social function of paraenesis in two examples of Valentinian paraenesis, highlighting the rhetorical and discursive voice of each text. The final chapter will summarize the findings of the dissertation and raise implications of this study for the field of early Christian studies.

Rhetorical vision and the great commission

Anderson, Amber L. January 1998 (has links)
This study analyzed representative works of John Mott and Bill Bright using Ernest Bormann's method of fantasy theme analysis. The analysis confirmed that Mott and Bright, as leaders of two organizations that encourage college students to engage in evangelism, share an identical rhetorical vision. This vision can be labeled the Great Commission and is identical in thought and content to the words of Christ found in Matthew 28. The shared rhetorical vision encourages members of the rhetorical community to acknowledge the needs of the world and seek to meet those needs by sharing the gospel message of Christ. In addition to a shared rhetorical visions, the works considered in this study also share identical fantasy types: "Fetching Good Out of Evil," and the quest. The fantasy type of the quest has received little interest in other studies. This study suggests that the type might provide rhetorical critics with a useful form for future studies. Several fantasy themes also were found to exist within each artifact. The presence of shared fantasy types and the commonalties that exist between the fantasy themes verifies the presence of the shared rhetorical vision, the Great Commission. / Department of Speech Communication

Heresy vs. Orthodoxy: The Preus/Tietjen Controversy

Barnhart, Melody R. (Melody Ruth) 08 1900 (has links)
Using the framework set up by rhetorical critic Thomas M. Lessl in his article "Heresy, Orthodoxy, And The Politics Of Science", this study examines the ways in which heretical discourse defines community boundaries and shapes perceptions of right belief. Specifically, this study analyzes the historic conflict in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod which produced the doctrinal statement "A Statement of Scriptural and Confessional Principles". Comparison is made between this event and other "heretical" conflicts in other discourse communities. This study concludes that community boundaries must be drawn, and that a doctrinal or policy statement is a useful rhetorical tool to accomplish such a task. Rhetorical critics may assist in this by examining heretical conflicts as historical trends, rather than emotional dissonance.
