Measuring experience, language ability, cross-cultural adaptability and intercultural business negotiation performance

Karkut, David Michael 05 1900 (has links)
In this study, performance in the speech event of negotiation was used to investigate the validity of using experiential, linguistic, and psychological/affective/cognitive assessment instruments for training or selecting candidates for intercultural business negotiation between Canadians and Koreans. Instruments used were: background questionnaire, TOEIC scores, and CCAI scores. The participants were 12 businesspeople from Korea and 12 commerce students from Canada. After the bargaining session, each person completed a questionnaire. The negotiation outcome variables considered were source's relative monetary performance and target's relative satisfaction with the negotiation, including process and end-deal aspects. Case analysis suggests that individual experience and middle-to-high TOEIC scores have no significant correlation with either type of performance. Three subsections of the individual CCAI scores were associated with partner satisfaction, but not with monetary performance. Analysis of combined dyadic data revealed strong negative correlation between pair CCAI scores and negotiated endprice. Positive correlation was shown between pair CCAI scores and mutual satisfaction.

Creationism as a social movement : the textbook controversy

Nielsen, Kirstin January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the rhetoric of the Creationist-evolutionist textbook controversy. In Chapter II, Leland Griffin's approach to the study of historical movements was used concomitantly with Thomas Kuhn's ideas concerning scientific revolution to explore the first research question: What changes have occurred in the persuasive success rate of the Creationists' textbook battle as it has moved from its stance of "the good versus the evil" toward the stance of the scientist, (including scientific methods of reasoning and observation)?Chapter III explored the second research question: Do the new persuasive tactics, the use of scientific vocabulary, grammar, and forms of argument, provide more effective persuasive persuasive methods than did the earlier approaches. This chapter examined the evolutionary content of secondary school biology textbooks, and in particular, estimated the impact of change in Creationist persuasive tactics used since 1968 upon the content and marketing of secondary biology textbooks. The textbook studies supported the contention that the bifurcated movement has been highly successful. Evolutionary coverage has decreased in biology textbooks since 1968 while biblical creation has seen a definite increase.Currently, however, the two Creationist fronts face a new challenge as their polar views have been observed together in recent legal battles. This polarity in approach has already proven detrimental to the Creationists in recent trials. Chapter IV discussed the implications of this bifurcation of the Creationist Movement. Further, the implications of the current rhetorical crisis were examined. It was recommended that research be continued examining the rhetorical strategies used by the Creationists since 1963. Also, further research in the area of textbook analysis was deemed necessary. / Department of Speech Communication

Paul Simon's Graceland : a fantasy theme analysis

Horn, Kristina K. January 1989 (has links)
Chapter one began with an introduction to the rhetorical study of Paul Simon's Graceland album. The events which led to the recording and release of the album were discussed, showing the significance of the album in the context of 1985-86, and research questions were posed, showing the focus of the study. Furthermore, the definition of rhetoric was given beginning with Aristotle's "the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion" (Rhetoric I: 1356a) through the advancements made by the National Development Project on Rhetoric, which included music in the study of rhetoric. Finally the literature review included articles which showed the relationship between music and rhetorical theory, and James Irvine and Walter Kirkpatrick's six musical variables along with Ernest Bormann's method of fantasy theme analysis were discussed for the purposes of critical analysis. Chapter two presented the historical, political, and social contexts surrounding the recording and release of Graceland. Most importantly, U.S. attempts to intervene in the affairs of South Africa as well as musical attempts at intervention were discussed as background material to understand more clearly the impact of the Graceland album.Chapter three moved from the context to the people involved on Graceland. Paul Simon's and Ladysmith Black Mambazo's musical careers and interests were recounted. The importance of Paul Simon in boosting the careers of Ladysmith Black Mambazo as well as concert co-stars Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela was also emphasized.Chapter four presented the critical analysis. First the album analysis based on the musical variables of James Irvine and Walter Kirkpatrick was discussed. What was found on the album itself seemed very innocent and nonsensical; thus, the importance of the media and the ideas it imposed became very clear. However, the major section of analysis involved the identification of mediated fantasy themes based on Ernest Bormann's method of fantasy theme analysis. Chronologically, characters, plots, and settings were portrayed, which helped to explain the development of Graceland as a rhetorical drama. Finally, one overarching rhetorical vision was identified, "The Unification of an Unaware Public," which was evident throughout the drama.Chapter five concluded the findings of the study. Because of the unrealistic goals that the media placed on Graceland, the many successes that came as a result of Paul Simon and Graceland were overshadowed by political controversy. Thus, the impact of the media on the outcome of persuasive events is of the utmost importance to consider. / Department of Speech Communication

This work aims to investigate some central concepts of Hannah Arendt's work. We assume that the German thinker understands the political sphere from worldly concepts such as plurality, persuasion and impartiality. The investigation will discuss the position occupied by these concepts in the Arendtian constitution of the political sphere: they were put in the world as paradigmatic historical experiences and they provide the basis of a political sphere from the fact that men live and act in common. In particular, we are interested in the Arendtian comprehension of the role played by the concept of impartiality in the realization of a political sphere orientated by the plurality and in the meanings of its requirements when it comes to bring to the public human actions as well as their results. The main demands of this work are: for Arendt the world is constituted as the result of human plurality in the midst of a web of relationships. In this web, impartiality is not dissociated from the individual freedom to express one own views and opinions, under the risk of part of the world being lost in oblivion. The public life implies a willingness to submit one's own opinions, even those regarded as the truest, to the examination of others in the public sphere and plural, i.e., submitting the certainties to the seems to me that model / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia

Orientador: Sylvia Bueno Terzi / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T15:22:06Z (GMT). A partir dos resultados alcançados, efetuamos uma avaliação das teorias que nos serviram de base teórica e metodológica e apontamos as implicações que decorrem deste trabalho / Abstract: The aim of this Applied Linguistics research is the reading development of low literacy students from the sixth term of Language Graduation of a private college in the inland of São Paulo State. This investigation analyses the meta-discoursive processes of these students in reading tasks of journalism texts at a didactic context which favored the co-relation between the information conveyed in the language theories and the empiric analysis of the linguistics and discoursive aspects of the texts. The theoretical and methodological framework came from Critical Discourse Analysis and the prospects of the Literacy studies. Besides this, we focused on the persuasive aspect of the language based on the argumentation theory. The description of the students¿ productions was anchored on Critical Discourse Analysis theories and on enunciative analysis studies. Two language concepts were highlighted in the analyses, so as to represent the world and as an interaction among the subjects, besides the emergency of the meta-discoursive reflection towards a more critical posture of the students and also of the teaching approach effects. It was conclued that the meta discoursive reflexions were important for changes of language concepts as well as depended on reading context's construction. From this point on, we made an evaluation of the theories that helped us to outline the theoretical and methodological basis and we nominated the implications resulting thereafter / Doutorado / Ensino-Aprendizagem de Lingua Materna / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada
