The studied circuit was proposed by Itoh and Chua in [9] and was constructed based on the well-known Chua's oscillators. The studied model is given by a discontinuous piecewise-linear system, defined on three zones in R 3, determined by the following inequalities: |z|<1 (called central zone) and |z|>1 (called external zones). The z-axis is composed by equilibrium points of the system. The local normal stability of these equilibira in each zone is analyzed. We show that, due to the existence of this line of equilibria, the phase space R 3 is foliated by invariant planes transversal to the z-axis and parallel to each other, in each zone. The solutions of the system are contained in a combination of three of these invariant planes: one of them in the central zone and the other two in the external zones. We also show that the system may present nonlinear oscillations due to the existence of periodic orbits passing through two of the three zones or passing by three zones. The analysis developed here has analytical and numerical parts. The analytical part was developed based on the study of planar piecewise-linear systems with three zones presented by Freire et al. in [5]... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Inference Of Switching Networks By Using A Piecewise Linear Formulation

Akcay, Didem 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Inference of regulatory networks has received attention of researchers from many fields. The challenge offered by this problem is its being a typical modeling problem under insufficient information about the process. Hence, we need to derive the apriori unavailable information from the empirical observations. Modeling by inference consists of selecting or defining the most appropriate model structure and inferring the parameters. An appropriate model structure should have the following properties. The model parameters should be inferable. Given the observation and the model class, all parameters used in the model should have a unique solution restriction of the solution space). The forward model should be accurately computable (restriction of the solution space). The model should be capable of exhibiting the essential qualitative features of the system (limit of the restriction). The model should be relevant with the process (limit of the restriction). A piecewise linear formulation, described by a switching state transition matrix and a switching state transition vector with a Boolean function indicating the switching conditions is proposed for the inference of gene regulatory networks. This thesis mainly concerns using a formulation of switching networks obeying all the above mentioned requirements and developing an inference algorithm for estimating the parameters of the formulation. The methodologies used or developed during this study are applicable to various fields of science and engineering.

The main goal of this work aim to study the number and distribution of limit cycles in piecewise linear differential systems. In particular we consider the planar piecewise linear differential system ˙x = −y − ε φ ( x) , ˙y = x, where ε 6= 0 is a small parameter and φ is an odd piecewise linear periodic function of period 4 . We prove that given an arbitrary positive integer n, the system above has exactly n limit cycles in the strip | x| ≤ 2 (n + 1 ) . Consequently, there are piecewise differential systems containing an infinite number of limit cycles in the real plane. First we get a lower bound on the number of limit cycles in the strip |x| ≤ 2 (n + 1 ) via Averaging Theory. In the following , using the Theory of Rotated Vector Fields, we see that above system has exactly n limit cycles in the strip | x| ≤ 2 (n + 1 )

Modelling Functional Dynamical Systems By Piecewise Linear Systems With Delay

Kahraman, Mustafa 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Many dynamical systems in nature and technology involve delays in the interaction of variables forming the system. Furthermore, many of such systems involve external inputs or perturbations which might force the system to have arbitrary initial function. The conventional way to model these systems is using delay differential equations (DDE). However, DDEs with arbitrary initial functions has serious problems for finding analytical and computational solutions. This fact is a strong motivation for considering abstractions and approximations for dynamical systems involving delay. In this thesis, the piecewise linear systems with delay on piecewise constant part which is a useful subclass of hybrid dynamical systems is studied. We introduced various representations of these systems and studied the state transition conditions. We showed that there exists fixed point and periodic stable solutions. We modelled the genomic regulation of fission yeast cell cycle. We discussed various potential uses including approximating the DDEs and finally we concluded.

Development Of Tools For Modeling Hybrid Systems With Memory

Gokgoz, Nurgul 01 August 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Regulatory processes and history dependent behavior appear in many dynamical systems in nature and technology. For modeling regulatory processes, hybrid systems offer several advances. From this point of view, to observe the capability of hybrid systems in a history dependent system is a strong motivation. In this thesis, we developed functional hybrid systems which exhibit memory dependent behavior such that the dynamics of the system is determined by both the location of the state vector and the memory. This property was explained by various examples. We used the hybrid system with memory in modeling the gene regulatory network of human immune response to Influenza A virus infection. We investigated the sensitivity of the piecewise linear model with memory. We introduced how the model can be developed in future.
