Norrtullsgatan living street : A public life investigation and design proposal / Norrtullsgatan en levande gata : Ett gestaltningsförslag och ett undersökande av offentligt livRivas Plaza, Veronica January 2021 (has links)
‘Norrtullsgatan Living Street’ is a public life investigation and design proposal to increase accessibility and attractiveness for people along Norrtullsgatan in Vasastaden, Stockholm. It is a response to the Levande Stockholm Programme, an urban place-making strategy to test potential pedestrian streets by restricting traffic and introducing pop-up furniture during the summer and winter months to create pedestrian-friendly environments. Vasastaden is located North of the city center with the major public transport hub of Odenplan and a significant number of people walking along its narrow sidewalks towards Drottninggatan. This area is an important pedestrian zone that connects the city center to other parts of Stockholm with great potential to activate already existing public spaces and create a network of livable streets. This thesis aims to investigate possible long-term strategies based on public life studies, a comprehensive street analysis, and urban place-making interventions that focus on pedestrians, cyclists, and the experience at the street level to create a ‘living street’. This project wants to strengthen and highlight the benefits of walking not only as a choice of mobility but also as a social, economic, and well-being outcome for the city. Moreover, it instigates further the concept of what makes a walkable city. People want to feel comfortable and safe during their walk but they also want to have a pleasurable experience. Urban design qualities, by all means, influence those choices. By following the evaluation of the temporary design during the summer and winter streets, this project re-assess those strategies to proposed permanent design to promote inclusive public spaces. As a result, this thesis emphasizes the importance of design strategies that are well-integrated into a community by taking into consideration site-specific conditions and users. At the same time, it hopes to contribute with input to the already tested pedestrian zones to become meeting places with rich content, high urban qualities, and a strong identity.

Nová nábřeží - urbanistická studie přestavby vybraného území podél řeky Svitavy v Brně / New Embankments - Urban Redevelopment of Selected Area along the River Svitava in BrnoStrašilová, Zdeňka January 2013 (has links)
The thesis aims to create a project that will lead towards the formation of a new waterfront area along the Svitava river in Zábrdovice where poor condition of public spaces and the presence of brownfields cause the fact, that this area, located close to the city center, tends to be one of the least visited places along the river. The project deals with the relationship between the waterfront and the city, using the river's citymaking potential for site development and at the same time creates urban study in a way that will maximize the success of waterfront area as a public space. A strategic plan for achieving this objective is created parallel with the design itself.

Outdoor lighting in Icelandic schoolyards : The importance of outdoor lighting during the dark winter daysGuðmundsdóttir, Anna Kristín January 2017 (has links)
Schoolyards play an important role in the Icelandic education system. Students aged 6 to 12 years old are required to go outdoors for recess at least two times per day. To play, get fresh air and to regain energy for upcoming classes. The schoolyards are even sometimes used for outdoor education where the students can experience their nearest environment. The children spend a great time of their childhood in school, which should support their well-being by offering an environment of good quality. The thesis main objective is to examine the importance of outdoor lighting in Icelandic schoolyards by the dark winter days. Since Iceland is located at high latitudes, the amount of daylight varies between seasons, with shorter days by winter but longer and brighter days by the summer. The structure of the thesis is a combination of research background and a case study. The research background introduces the positive link between the outdoors and well-being and how the mindset towards the winter can change the perception of darkness. Possibilities of outdoor lighting are examined, how lighting can contribute to the users and the identity of urban spaces. The case study examines two Icelandic schools where the current conditions are analyzed. Qualitative interviews were carried out to gain insight from school employees about the school environment and their experience of the students‘ well-being during the dark winter months. Finally, a lighting proposal is introduced that illustrates how layers of light can enrich the school outdoor environment. It can be truly said that outdoor lighting is of high importance in Icelandic schoolyards, for the students to see and experience the schoolyard by dark winter days. It is important that the lighting is in context with the schoolyard elements and thereby enhancing the quality of the environment.

Form-Based Codes, Design Guidelines and Placemaking: The Case of Hayward, CA.Ma, Cindy 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Throughout history planning codes and standards have been used to regulate the built environment for health, power, order, and economic reasons. More recently, in the urban design and planning field, planning codes and standards have emerged to become tools in the process of “placemaking”. The concept of placemaking builds from the desire of humans to create places, not spaces, which are unique, attractive, identifiable, and memorable. It is a concept that is comprised of visual and social components, recognizing the need for both in the creation of successful places. In the field of urban design and planning, form-based codes (FBCs) and design guidelines have emerged to become two types of planning tools used in the process of placemaking. This study explores the relationship between FBCs, design guidelines, and placemaking, investigating it through an extensive literature review, and then in the context of the case of Hayward, California through an update of the City’s Downtown design requirements and guidelines. To frame the update of the Hayward’s Downtown design requirements and guidelines this study used an exploratory methodology that combined quantitative and qualitative methods. Archival research was conducted to provide a historical narrative of the City and the Downtown area and a documents analysis was conducted to reveal information about existing Downtown policies and programs. Community participation through the crowdsourcing platform of MindMixer was used to collect community input and feedback about concepts of place in Downtown. The data analysis and findings from these methods were combined with findings from the literature review to formulate recommendations that were used in the update of Hayward’s Downtown design requirements and guidelines document. The Power of Place: A Qualitative Evaluation of Stream Monitoring Data Usage by Decision-Makers in Dane County, WisconsinSemlow, Andrea R. 05 1900 (has links)
Has years of citizen-based nutrient sampling and baseline water quality monitoring efforts only had a "trivial" impact on natural resource management decisions? This thesis will explore this and other findings from a qualitative evaluation of the Rock River Coalition (RRC) citizen-based stream monitoring project in Dane County, Wisconsin, USA. These findings are the culmination of 47 semi-structured interviews with decision-makers from seven client-identified categories and participant observations of board meetings and other watershed groups. Interview questions focused on current strategies of data design and dissemination with the goal of constructing a clearer picture of existing data usage by Dane County decision-makers. In the wider picture of citizen science and community-based research, this case study aims to highlight barriers to data use and potential solutions. The results of this case study were understood through four key frames: (1) Bourdieu's concept of symbolic capital, (2) Barzilai‐Nahon's theory of network gatekeeping, (3) Newman et al.'s framework for leveraging the power of place, and (4) a Foucauldian approach to the production of scientific knowledge. The findings of this study highlight the presence of gatekeeping mechanisms within the scientific field as well as government institutions, problematize the practice of placemaking, assert there is untapped symbolic capital to be wielded by citizen scientists, and trace the "innovation" of volunteer water monitoring data in Dane County.

體驗經濟之真實性研究-以體驗展示的場所營造為例 / The Authenticity Study of Experience Economy-in the case of Place Making for the Rendering Experience巫基福, Wu, Chi Fu Unknown Date (has links)
In the era of experience economy, the consumer sensibility has transferred from the service-orientation of quality management to the experience-orientation of rendering “authenticity”. Only when enterprises satisfy what consumers really want-real and customized products / services, then they can touch consumers . They can split a value-based business niche market segments in the “cost control” and “quality management” of competitive market.
The experience enterprises have to follow its industrial characteristics and competitive advantages to render their authenticity of products and services to target consumers. Especially in the three fields of product and graphic design, communications, and spatial design, they have to build a corporate identity system – “Marketing Aesthetics”, easily distinguished by consumers. Then they can touch and inspire customers through a variety of perceptual experiences and differentiate from their competitors.
The best way is the “Placemaking” for the marketing aesthetics of differentiation strategy. That is for potential (and current) customers to experience that offering in a place so engaging that they can’t help but pay attention, and then pay up as a result by buying that offering. Thus it make customers imperceptibly accept the corporate identity and value recognition, drive brand loyalty.
The thesis attempts to build the preliminary assessment system of rendering authenticity about the placemaking of experience-based enterprises. This system combines “the style and theme analysis of marketing aesthetics”, and ”the authenticity research of the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention (UNESCO)”. In order to analyze the current market and test the authenticity assessment system, there are some experience-based enterprises (with industrial features and competitiveness) case studies-Canjune international Inc., Shi-Yang Culture Restaurant, and Cha Cha Thé Culture international Co..
In the style and theme analysis of placemaking , the five factors of authenticity-natural, original, unique, referable, and influential, is correctly mapping to the five dimensions of placemaking-materials, design, crafts, places, and spirit/emotions. It forms different characteristics of the corporation (style and theme). Besides, this analysis system which will be effective in helping enterprises systematic/architectural design thinking and service process planning.
In the case studies of Taiwan experience-based enterprises, innovator's personal values and aesthetic tendency that is the company's marketing aesthetics. Because there are no the mature and large-scale enterprises such as Disneyland or Universal Studios. But it is easy to show the uniqueness and authenticity of place for customers.
In conclusion, this is the preliminary research about the place of the authenticity rendering on the experience economy. And this is the cross-border “Marketing” and “Place” dialogue. Then, more "user experience " and "service design" studies should be able to strengthen the integrity of the placemaking authenticity research.

The gatekeepers of Moroccan cultural heritage : Amazigh women and the status quoMacdonald, Madisson January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to determine the role of Amazigh/Berber women in maintaining and preserving the cultural heritage of their people through carpet weaving, as well as how this tradition contributes to gender norms and tourism in rural Morocco. The research method consisted of conducting semi-structured interviews and a literature review of intangible cultural heritage preservation, traditional gender norms in rural areas, and nomadic tourism theories. Analysis of the interviews concluded that Amazigh women keep their traditional culture alive through carpet weaving, and they are simultaneously valued and marginalized within their society. The necessity and pressure placed upon them leads to issues related to gender equality and girls’ rights/accessibility to a quality education in the modern context. Though in a constant state of change and shifting with time, the nomadic lifestyle and traditional Berber carpet weaving are still participated in today and nevertheless hold deep significance for those who partake in these activities. Traditional mentalities regarding gender norms remain intact, although they are challenged more frequently. Women’s weavings are critical in preserving Amazigh culture and symbolize a heritage identity in an overt manner, making women central to the Berber story and Berber heritage.

A socially sustainable society is based on creating an environment in which all individuals are respected and given equal opportunities to participate in society. Public spaces play an important role in the social sustainability of being involved, safe and accessible. People with different conditions should be able to participate in society and public environments need to be planned after physical accessibility so as not to exclude certain groups. Which groups that participate in the public space affects how society develops over time. The study draws attention to how temporary use can be used as a method to bring forward work on social sustainability. A summer pedestrian street is a temporary use of a place during the summer months when use is temporarily changed to pedestrian advantage by turning off the street for automobile traffic. The concept of summer pedestrian street is studied in this study from the perspective of social sustainability, by examining the possibilities and disadvantages that may arise when introducing temporary pedestrian streets and how these can be used in community planning to increase physical accessibility and socio-economic inclusion. A case study has been carried out across Östra Ågatan in Uppsala to investigate the possibilities and disadvantages of organizing a summer pedestrian street based on social sustainability. The results show that broadening the concept of accessibility enables public places to become more inclusive and several groups may be involved in the public environment. If this happens, temporary use can be a way to create meeting places and increase accessibility. Furthermore, it is essential to create an inclusive location for a long-term goal for the site to be expressed
