Shaping This Space Between Us: using a reflexive journaling process to explore the complex and malleable space in which identity exists

MaHusain, Lina 04 December 2013 (has links)
While some parts of identity remain constant throughout one’s life, many aspects of a person’s identity are subject to rapid and constant change and negotiation. Using theories regarding the role possessions play in the construction, reinforcement, and manifestation of a person’s identity, this thesis project explores the potential to facilitate meaningful insights and awareness into one’s own identity. This will be achieved by designing a reflexive journaling process. A qualitative evaluation of this prototype journal process used by a pilot group of young creative individuals will generate an assessment of the proposed process

System integration of electronic functionality in packaging application

Unander, Tomas January 2011 (has links)
Sensor applications are becoming increasingly important as products are now being requested to be more and more intelligent and safe. As the costs involved in sensor technology decrease its usage will spread to new market segments including new areas with products that have never previously used such functionalities, including, wood fibre based products for packaging, hygiene or graphical use. Currently there is a significant interest in developing technology that will allow packages to become interactive and be integrated with digital services accessible on the Internet. In this thesis, the system integration of a hybrid RFID based sensor platform is presented. This proposed platform provides a trade-off between the communication performance and its compatibility with international standards and also includes flexibility in on‐package customization, including the type and number of sensors. In addition it combines the use of traditional silicon based electronics with printed electronics directly onto wood fibre based materials so as to enable the possibility of creating smart packages. Together with the system integration of the sensor platform, five printed moisture sensor concepts that are designed to work with the sensor platform are presented and characterized. Firstly, there is a moisture sensor that shows a good correlation to the moisture content of wood fibre based substrates. The second one involves a sensor that detects high relative humidity levels in the air and the third is an action activated energy cell that provides power when activated by moisture. The fourth one deals with two types of moisture sensors that utilize silver nano-particles in order to measure the relative humidity in the air. The final one is a printable touch sensitive sensor that is sensitive to the moisture contained in the hand. A concept of remote moisture sensing that utilizes ordinary low cost RFID tags has also been presented and characterized. The main focus is thus on system integration to, by combining silicon based electronics with printed electronics, find the most low cost solution with regards to flexibility, sensor functions and still meet the communication standards.

The impact of digital platforms on roles and responsibilities in value creation among stakeholders of an ecosystem

Bonollo, Nicolas, Poopuu, Preedik January 2019 (has links)
Digital transformation is an area of research that has received a lot of attention in recent years. When talking about it in the context of entrepreneurship, digitalization is changing business interactions as well as completing different tasks. Since the businesses are not working in isolation, but can be rather seen as part of complex ecosystems interacting with different stakeholders, there is an unexplored research area regarding digitalization of ecosystems. The purpose of this research is to extend the literature on value creation and delivery within complex multi-stakeholder ecosystems using digital platforms and the change in the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders. The empirical research is based on qualitative approach utilizing case-study to investigate how the roles and responsibilities of an ecosystem have changed via semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that digitalization changes the ecosystem by optimizing the existing interactions between different stakeholders as well as enabling stakeholders to take new roles on the digital platforms. Roles were impacted in terms of power and leadership over the ecosystem, but to a larger extent there was a shift in how stakeholders carried out their responsibilities. Additionally, digital technologies change the responsibilities by automation as well as taking over certain roles in the form of machine learning algorithms.

Periodic location routing with inclusion of transfer routes between ports in offshore platforms service.

Ortiz, Cesar Igal Torres 22 January 2019 (has links)
The main motivation of the following research was to establish a gain related to the total cost of scheduling service of oil platforms, based on the premise of cooperation of ships from different ports. Therefore In this research the periodic routing problem will be studied in the context of delivering supplies to oil platforms at the sea. A novel aspect will be considered which is the sharing of resources (supply vessels) among the ports. This means that one or more vessels can be transferred between ports, being used by all ports. This modus operandi contrasts with a dedicated fleet operating at each port, without the possibility of being shared. The research is focused on proposing integer linear mathematical models, and have them solved with commercial optimization codes. The problem was initially considered as an extension of the periodic location routing problem, which also has been seldom studied in the existing literature. In the case of the urban physical distribution, the resource sharing aspect consists in allowing a distribution route to end at a different depot, other than the one where the vehicle started. For the urban physical distribution, it will be proposed 3 mathematical models. Instances extracted and adapted from the literature will be tested to demonstrate the models\' applicability.

A Hardware Platform for Communication and Localization Performance Evaluation of Devices inside the Human Body

Li, Shen 31 May 2012 (has links)
"Body area networks (BAN) is a technology gaining widespread attention for application in medical examination, monitoring and emergency therapy. The basic concept of BAN is monitoring a set of sensors on or inside the human body which enable transfer of vital parameters between the patient´s location and the physician in charge. As body area network has certain characteristics, which impose new demands on performance evaluation of systems for wireless access and localization for medical sensors. However, real-time performance evaluation and localization in wireless body area networks is extremely challenging due to the unfeasibility of experimenting with actual devices inside the human body. Thus, we see a need for a real-time hardware platform, and this thesis addressed this need. In this thesis, we introduced a unique hardware platform for performance evaluation of body area wireless access and in-body localization. This hardware platform utilizes a wideband multipath channel simulator, the Elektrobit PROPSimâ„¢ C8, and a typical medical implantable device, the Zarlink ZL70101 Advanced Development Kit. For simulation of BAN channels, we adopt the channel model defined for the Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) band. Packet Reception Rate (PRR) is analyzed as the criteria to evaluate the performance of wireless access. Several body area propagation scenarios simulated using this hardware platform are validated, compared and analyzed. We show that among three modulations, two forms of 2FSK and 4FSK. The one with lowest raw data rate achieves best PRR, in other word, best wireless access performance. We also show that the channel model inside the human body predicts better wireless access performance than through the human body. For in-body localization, we focus on a Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localization algorithm. An improved maximum likelihood algorithm is introduced and applied. A number of points along the propagation path in the small intestine are studied and compared. Localization error is analyzed for different sensor positions. We also compared our error result with the Cramèr- Rao lower bound (CRLB), shows that our localization algorithm has acceptable performance. We evaluate multiple medical sensors as device under test with our hardware platform, yielding satisfactory localization performance."

PATO: um ambiente integrado com interface gráfica para a curadoria de dados de sequências biológicas / PATO: an integrated enviroment with GUI to data curation of biological sequences

Oliveira, Liliane Santana 22 November 2013 (has links)
The evolution of the technologies of DNA sequencing has permitted the elucidation of genomic sequence of an increasing number of organisms. Though, the obtainment of the genome nucleotide sequence is only the rst step in the study of organisms. The annotation process consists in the identication of different regions of interest on the genome and their features. Several computational tools were developed to support the annotation process, however none allow the user to select sequences, process them, analyze them graphically and add information about its regions in the same surrounding. Thus, the aim of this project was to develop a graphic platform to genome annotation that allows the user to realize your tasks required from the annotation process in a single tool integrated to a database. The idea is to provide from the user liberty to work with your dataset, enabling the selection of sequences for analyze, pipeline construction, processing them and analyze of results from the viewer that allows the user to add information in the regions and to do the trusteeship of sequences. The resulting tool is easily extensible; allowing the engagement modular of new functionalities of annotation and its structure allows the user works both projects of expressed sequences and with genome annotation.
