[en] This work presents the study and conducting experiments to investigate the PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) effects in polarization control implemented in a single-mode fiber optic link. This study will allow the optimization of polarization controllers in transmission systems that will use polarization multiplexing (PolMux) combined with techniques like UDWDM (Ultra Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing), and thereby to increase the transmission rate in a channel. Therefore, we performed experimental measurements showing the angular displacement of the polarization due to decorrelation between channels by analyzing the evolution of the polarization of the optical signal as a function of PMD, wavelength and the spectral spacing, analyzed using two proposals for the control of polarization, statistics of the fading channels used and also performed the calculate the correlation with the aim to analyze how these channels are related.

[pt] CONTROLE DA POLARIZAÇÃO DA LUZ EM FIBRAS ÓPTICAS MONOMODO E APLICAÇÕES / [en] POLARIZATION OF LIGHT CONTROL IN MONOMODE OPTICAL FIBERS AND APLICATIONS05 October 2009 (has links)
[en] The control of polarization state, as well as a control of all states of
polarization of a light signal travelling through a singlemode optical fiber, is
performed using different schemes. The polarization control of the signal in a
DWDM channel is performed using reference signals in lateral channels in real
time. A polarization encoded quantum key distribution scheme is discussed and
performed in the central channel through the control system polarization. The
influence of the PMD and the spectral distance between channels in control is also
investigated theoretically and experimentally. Two prototypes were built, a full
polarization control system and a PMD compensator is shown and totally
described, as well their test results. Measurements of PMD compensation on a
link at 43Gb / s were performed in different modulation formats and in different
situations of polarization scrambling, with and without the use of FEC in order to
evaluate the efficiency of modulation formats, and PMD compensation with single
or multiple section delay lines.

[en] OPTICAL SYNTHESIS OF DUAL REFLECTORS / [pt] SÍNTESE ÓTICA DE SISTEMAS DE DUPLOS REFLETORESJOAO CRISOSTOMO WEYL ALBUQUERQUE DA COSTA 09 October 2006 (has links)
[en] The aperture blockage by feed, stalls, and subreflector
generally causes degradation of gain and raising of
crosspolarisation and sidelobe levels. Consequently, to
attend recent recommendations for sidelobe envelope, the
design of earth station antennas has employed offset-fed
configurations to eliminate blocking effects. Several dual
offset designs have been presented employing sections of
confocal conic or shaped reflectors. A possible
disadvantage of these designs is that their main
reflector does not show circular symmetry and thus connot
be manufactured by spinning. The use of spherical main
reflector is particularly interesting from the point of
view of fabrication process for mass production. This work
extends the investigation of the design of dual offset
antennas with a spherical main reflector. The phase
correcting subreflector is shaped using Geometrical Optics
meanings. A diffractive analysis based on Physical
Optics approximations is used to predict the radiation
pattern, the efficiency and the crosspolaristion.

<br> / Abstract: A new ab initio method is developed here in order to take into account the polarization effects of molecules in the presence of slow positrons. In this framework, we have obtained low-energy positron cross sections for H2 and N2 molecules, in the energy range of 0,1 to 10 eV. Some specific energies have been studied for the H2 molecule in order to compare its results with those in the literature. The model proposed here is based on the idea that the polarization of the electronic cloud of a molecule is caused exclusively by the positron-electron interactions. So, the polarization potential is calculated as the expected values of the molecular hamiltonian in a polarized wave function in which the positron presence is considered at a fixed distance, excluding the electron-electron interactions. This operator is evaluated for each of those fixed distances, resulting in the polarization energy dependent exclusively on that coordinate. The obtained results are compared to other theoretical and experimental approaches, giving an overall good agreement with some experimental data and more elaborated calculations. Particularly, the cross sections of slow positrons colliding with N2 molecules presented here are the only results in the literature which agrees with the more recent experimental data. This result is very satisfactory, as the proposed method can be applied to a wide variety of molecular targets, and the results are expected to be well comparable to the most recent measurements.

[en] MEASUREMENT OF POLARIZATION DEPENDENT LOSS USING FREQUENCY MIXING IN PHOTODIODES / [pt] MEDIÇÃO DE PERDAS DEPENDENTES DA POLARIZAÇÃO UTILIZANDO MISTURA DE FREQUÊNCIAS EM FOTODIODOSCAMILA SEABRA NOBRE 05 February 2016 (has links)
No presente
[en] This work presents a theoretic and experimental method for Polarization
Dependent Loss (PDL) measurement in optical systems. This method is
based on how two orthogonal polarization components both modulated in
amplitude by two different frequency are coupled in the detector. In this
present work a study is performed about light properties and traditional
techniques used to peform PDL measurement. Before the characterization of
PDL measures the alignment of the device under test (DUT) was performed
to make sure that optical losses were minimized in the system which will
emulate the PDL. Then, the DUT was connected to the experimental setup
to optical carriers suppression and polarization alignment. In this method
is possible to calculate the PDL value and its orientation on the Poincaré
sphere.

[en] POLARIZATION DEPENDENT GAIN FLUCTUATIONS DUE TO PMD IN RAMAN AMPLIFIED OPTICAL TRANSMISSIONS / [pt] ESTATÍSTICA DO GANHO DEPENDENTE DA POLARIZAÇÃO EM SISTEMAS ÓPTICOS COM AMPLIFICAÇÃO RAMANTATIANA MEDEIROS GUASQUE DE MESQUITA 11 March 2004 (has links)
[pt] Este trabalho visa estabelecer na prática a estatística do
ganho dependente da polarização (PDG-Polarization Dependent
Gain) em sistemas ópticos com amplificação Raman. A
Portanto, a
A birrefringência
Nesse trabalho será medida experimentalmente a distribuição
[2]. / [en] Raman amplifiers are very attractive because they provide a
large and relatively flat gain over a wide bandwidth while
maintaining a small noise figure, and they can be made
using regular silica fiber. However, the Raman Gain
coefficient is polarization sensitive and can be up to ten
times higher when the signal and pump polarization states
are parallel rather than perpendicular [1]. Usually fibers
present some degree of residual asymmetry - because the
fiber core is slightly out-of-round, or because of
mechanical stress on the deployed fiber - and this causes
polarization mode dispersion. The light traveling along one
polarization axis moves slower or faster than the light
polarized along the other axis. This effect distorts the
signal and causes polarization fluctuations along the
fiber. As the Raman gain is higher when the signal and pump
polarization states are parallel these fluctuations of the
relative polarization between signal and pump vary the
instantaneous value of the Raman gain. So the Polarization
Dependence Gain (PMG) is directly related to the PMD.
Several experimental studies have shown not only that the
gain of raman amplifiers depends on the state of
polarization of the input signal but also that this
polarization-dependent gain (PDG) fluctuates over a wide
range because of the random nature of polarization mode
dispersion (PMD) [4,5]. It is important to know the
statistics of PDG, its relationship to the PMD, and how the
PDG can be reduced to acceptable low levels. In this letter
we will demonstrate experimentally the statistical
distribution of the PDG given by [2]. This In this work the
polarization dependent gain (PDG) fluctuations due to
PMD in Raman amplified optical transmissions is
experimentally demonstrated.

[en] BIOSENSOR AND ELECTROOPTICAL DEVICE WITH SPECIAL FIBER OPTICS / [pt] BIOSSENSOR E DISPOSITIVO ELETRO-ÓPTICO EM FIBRAS ÓPTICAS ESPECIAISALEXANDRE DE RESENDE CAMARA 05 April 2017 (has links)
[en] The present work investigates the use of fiber optics in biosensing and the creation of a second order nonlinearity to be use in the development of sensor devices. The goal of the proposed biosensor is to diagnose one of the diseases with highest incidence in tropical countries: Dengue. Dengue is a dangerous disease that every year affects more and more people, despite the efforts made to deal with the transmitter, the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Furthermore, since Dengue symptoms resemble flu symptoms, wrong diagnoses are frequently made. As a consequence, wrong medicines may be prescribed, and that may lead the patient to death. Another problem in diagnosing Dengue is the long time is necessary for the laboratorial exams to give a result. In an attempt to offer a solution that could minimize these problems, an LSPR-based fiber optic sensor was adapted for antigen NS1 detection. This sensor is potentially able to perform a Dengue s virus diagnosis in a short period of time in an infected patient s blood. It uses gold nanoparticles that are functionalized with Dengue s antibodies. The antibody, anti-NS1, was immobilized in gold nanoparticles deposited at the endface of a multimode optical fiber. The LSPR sensor is able to detect different concentrations of the antigen NS1 with a limit of quantification equal to 0.074 microgram per milliliter, and may be used in the acute phase of the infection. Another part of the present work investigates the possibility of performing structural modifications in the optical fiber to change the optical properties of silica. Through the electro-thermal poling technique it is possible to record electric fields as high as 108 volts per meter in the core of the fiber, making possible the use of these modified fibers as phase and amplitude modulators, optical keys, pulse selectors, voltmeters, etc. This work also shows a very detailed study of electro-thermal poling in optical fiber through simulations, using the software Comsol Multiphysics, considering various parameters that are involved in the process in order to obtain high second order nonlinearity. Furthermore, experiments on eletro-optical poling were performed to investigate the mechanism involved in this poling process, in order to understand the role of the carriers present in the material in the generation of the second order nonlinearity.

[en] POLARIZATION-DRIVEN PUNCTURING FOR POLAR CODES IN 5G SYSTEMS / [pt] PUNCIONAMENTO ORIENTADO POR POLARIZAÇÃO PARA CÓDIGOS POLARES EM SISTEMAS 5GROBERT MOTA OLIVEIRA 29 August 2018 (has links)
[en] This thesis presents a polarization-driven puncturing technique for the design of punctured polar codes. The proposed puncturing strategy consists of reducing the generator matrix by relating its row index based on
the channel polarization principle. The punctured codes constructed based on channel polarization are then considered with successive cancellation (SC) decoding and punctured bits known to both the encoder and the
decoder. The Spectrum Distance (SD) and the Joint Spectrum Distance (JSD) are then used to performance analysis. Simulation results show that the proposed punctured polar codes outperform existing punctured polar codes.
