Postmodernism, democratisation and transformation : implications for teacher college management

Lowan, Vongane Manasse 12 September 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / Since postmodernism according to Von Recum (1990:10) has to do with the dissolution of universal meanings for the world and life, along with the process of egalitarianism, that is, equality for all people, and dehierarchisation, and dismantling of authority, the administration and management processes of colleges of education are invariably influenced by the movement. This investigation therefore seeks to find out the influence of postmodernism, that is, dehierarchisation and dismantling of bureaucratic authority by students and lecturers on the generic processes of administration and the significance of it for educational management. The dehierarchisation process will, in the view of this study, make it possible for the colleges of education to be democratised and to be transformed. It would appear that the colleges of education have difficulties in coping with the demands of the postmodern times that are characterised by democratisation and transformation. This study therefore intends to examine the paradigms or models that may help these institutions to succeed in accomplishing the missions for which they were established which is to nurture and to train teachers.

Ao escolher compreender o espaço no qual a escola discute, planeja, seleciona e organiza os saberes emergiram situações do cotidiano reveladoras de formas de expressão da cultura escolar, das práticas e políticas curriculares / Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to present mainly a social story of the curriculum presenting aspects related to processes and practices dealing with schooling. It deals with the study of curricular practices in a perspective of understanding the problems of knowledge in the social organization of the school. The narrative deals with the discussion on the curricular reform implemented in the state of Ceará, Brazil, in 1998, focusing on three inter-related aspects, which are: the discussion on the influence of the directions that set up the curricular policies; the comprehension on the deliberations that outline the production and implementation of the curricular text; and the understanding of the schooling practices that implement the reform in the process of knowledge production. The mainline of the thesis makes an attempt to understand how the premise of change, that leads to the deliberation of reform reaches the school and how this instrument makes a new interpretation of the policies, whether it be by means of knowledge selection, by means of diverse institutional organizational practices or in the implementation of the curricular reform as building elements of the curriculum. The research united government, regional schooling secretariat and school documents. The sources are made up of curricular texts, government deliberations, reports, meeting agendas, work projects, planning notebooks, pedagogical agenda, photograph album, posters, note board material, among others. Daily situations will emerge that reveal the form of expression of the school culture, of the practices and the political curriculum, when choosing to understand the area in which the school discusses, plans, selects and organizes knowledge / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Education policy development in South Africa, 1994-1997.

Fataar, Mogamad Aslam January 1999 (has links)
Black South Africans have been exposed to an unequal and divided education system. It has been expected that the basis for an equitable education system would be laid in the post apartheid period. In this thesis I have provided an analysis of education policy development in South Africa between May 1994 and mid-1997. My main aim has beento understand the policy vision that the post apartheid state has enacted as the basisfor educational reconstruction.

The conceptual framework of this thesis is located in the academic fields of Education and Development and Policy Sociology. I have focused on the interaction between the broad delimitations set by the structural, economic and political dimensions in society on the one hand, and the political and policy dynamics that have given education policy its specific meaning on the other hand. The role of the government in enacting a specific policy vision has been at the centre of my analysis.

The government has effected a conservative vision with the adoption of the Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR) macroeconomic strategy. GEAR has targeted the development of an export-based global economy along post fordist lines. Predicated upon an emphasis on fiscal discipline, the dominant policy orientation has supported equity but without an emphasis on redress. This approach has not provided the necessary basis for education reconstruction.

The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and Outcomes-based education (OBE) embody a definite '/ision in terms of which education policy would be aligned with economic development. This vision is based on the false assumption that education should playa fundamental role in producing the sophisticated labour demands of a globally competitive economy. The logic of both GEAR and the NQF is internally inconsistent and the relationship between these two policy frameworks is unsustainable.

A questionnaire, with 29 questions, was applied to 283 students between 15 and 18 years-old from 3 schools in São Paulo (2 public and 1 private). The students were asked about the information provided by their schools regarding: voting, candidates, political parties, occupations of Brazilian schools in 2015, President Dilma's impeachment process, the relevance of teaching political questions in schools, and whether students felt that their schools contributed to their political education. The results suggest that many of the young people surveyed did not identify that their schools provided information on the topics cited. However, many recognized that teaching political issues is relevant, not only for voting purposes, but also for different objectives, such as the formation for the future, the formation of a critical sense and a better understanding of the situation from the country. Some students pointed out what their school did to contribute to their political education, while many others made suggestions for schools to meet this demand / O objetivo desse estudo foi identificar a iniciativa de três escolas do ensino médio na formação política de seus alunos, na perspectiva destes.

Stereotype activation and university access programmes : preparing students with one hand and holding them back with the other?

Essack, Zaynab. January 2008 (has links)
A generally untested assumption within the stereotype threat literature is that it is only those individuals who are highly identified with a domain who will be susceptible to stereotype threat. Further, many of the studies on stereotype threat have been confined to artificial laboratory settings and have been conducted on American samples. The current study aimed to develop a measure of domain-identification in order to test this central assumption of stereotype threat theory on a sample of students in a humanities access programme in a South African university. Results indicate that the experience of stereotype threat varies with respect to the combination of 1) the degree of domain-identification, and 2) the degree to which students are aware of negative domain-relevant stereotypes. That is, students who were highly domain-identified and were highly or moderately aware of negative stereotypes performed worse than highly domain-identified individuals who had low levels of awareness of others negative stereotypes about their in-group. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

Flores, Maria Luiza Rodrigues January 2007 (has links)
This thesis of receiving of doctoral degrees had as privileged area of interest the Infantile Education, first stage of the Basic Education in accordance with the current Brazilian educational legislation. The objective of the research was to investigate the public politics for the Infantile Education in the city of Porto Alegre, implemented in the period between 1989 and 2004, when four consecutive managements of the Party of the Workers in the city had happened. In this historical period, it has a national movement of recognition of the right of the child of zero the six years old to the Education, unchained for different actors: organized legislators, intellectuals, social movements. The study analyzed two fields of the educational politics: the offers of attendance, the formation of professionals, including the regularization of the institutions next to the Municipal System of Education - SME. The methodology, of qualitative approach, involved two approaches: half-structuralized interviews and documentary research. Politics since different places had been interviewed representative of three involved segments with these, including legislators of the City Council of Education, coordinators of the Infantile Education of the City Department of Education - SMED, employees of the Municipal Schools of Infantile Education and educators of the day-care centers’ agreement to the City Hall. The documentary analysis involved federal, state and municipal legislation, publications of the SMED, management reports, other research on the municipal education and documents not officially recorded yielded by the interviewed ones, among others. Once the researcher, as teacher of the Municipal System of Education, was involved, since different places, with the implementation of the politics in study, was opted to the Theory of the Complexity, Edgar Morin, as a methodological theoretician referencial for the development of the research and the data analysis. This theoretical perspective relativizes the neutrality of science, recognizes the compromise of the observer in relation to the observed one and defends a dialogical position in the data analysis, allowing the inherent consideration of the contradictions and errors to the human knowledge. The presentation of the analyses on the searched material focused the movements and complexities presents in the public politics in the studied period. Among the analyzed marks as much in the proper net how much in the agreement one is distinguished that the city carried through the transition of the attendance to the zero children the six years old of other spheres for the Education; it uninterruptedly invested in action of formation continued for all the segments of the educational community, especially teachers, monitorial and educators of the day-care centers; it unchained programs of initial formation in service in level of Average education Normal Modality and superior course of Pedagogy Infantile Education; and unchained the processes of regularization of the establishments of Infantile Education next to the SME, through the creation of specific sector for orientation to the establishments. The referring data to the credential of the establishments next to the SME indicate the necessity of revision of flows and directions, in view of the small number of authorized establishments in the period of 2001 to 2004, after the creation of Resolution 003/01 of the CME.

In 2011 the Assembly of God did 100 years of existence, and in the 2000s there was an increased demand for courses in Theology, as a mandatory and necessary tool for development within the institution of the believer as a minister of the Gospel. The Assembly of God had received the interest of researchers, who presented works about the institution, but not about the education in that Institution. This work search to offers a preliminary contribution to the institution and to a better understanding of that Christian denomination in the Brazilian society. O levantamento desses trabalhos, relacionados à educação e a Assembleia de Deus no Brasil, possibilita comparações, oferecendo resultados e divisando tendências.

ABSTRACT This work is about the Rural Education Funding Policy, bounded to the National Program of Rural Education (PRONACAMPO), from the Department of Continued Education, Literacy, Diversity and Inclusion (SECADI) of the Ministry of Education (MEC). Based on the analysis of educational indicators for the Rural Education, we see a picture of poor conditions in the physical structure of schools, problems in initial and continued teacher training, big age-grade incompatibility, among other issues. From this analysis of the data collected, the research problem was identified: What are the advances of PRONACAMPO in relation to the field of Rural Education for the education of workers of Brazilian countryside? From the problem research, questions were elaborated: What are the PRONACAMPO areas activity?; What are the sources of financing for PRONACAMPO?; What are the limits of PRONACAMPO in ensuring a Rural Education that meets the aspirations and demands of rural workers? Considering the defined problems, in this study we list the general research objective: identifying what PRONACAMPO’s areas of activity are, what the advances in comparison to the field of Education previously offered by Brazil have been, as well as proposing adjustments and changes to the program so that it have the possibility of meeting the claims of rural workers. We see as a hypothesis the reflection that the limits of the development of the Federal Government Rural Education Policy through the PRONACAMPO are defined: (1) By the fact that Rural Education is part of the scenario of Brazilian education, which still has many obstacles to overcome in order to provide an education that meets the interests of the working class of the city and countryside, characterized by not being organized in a system that can tackle their weaknesses and not having a national plan of financing associated to it; and (2) By the prestiging of agribusiness and land concentration, to the detriment of family farming, not allowing the education of workers to be a priority, since education of the worker has always been neglected by the government. A critical analysis of the program shows that the PRONACAMPO’s limits for the development of actions, needed to finance the Brazilian Countryside Education, urgent demand for the training of field workers.
