Dermal Absorption Of A Dilute Aqueous Solution Of Malathion

Malathion is a commonly used organophosphate pesticide on field crops, fruits, nut trees, vegetables, livestock, agricultural premises, and land. The approved uses also include mosquito and medfly control. These uses can result in human skin contact. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the human skin absorption of malathion for the purpose of assessing the risks associated with aqueous solution exposures following applications. Aerial applications can result in solubilized malathion in swimming pools and other waters that may be contacted. Human volunteers were selected and exposed to aqueous solutions of malathion at various concentrations. Participants submerged their arms and hands in twenty liters of dilute malathion solution in either a stagnant or stirred environment. The "disappearance method" was applied by measuring malathion concentrations in the water before and after human subject exposure to the water for various periods of time. Malathion was measured using Gas Chromatography. No measurable skin absorption was detected in 42% of the participants. Measurable skin absorption among the remaining 58% of participants resulted in doses that were more than an order of magnitude less than the minimal dose necessary to cause a measurable change in red blood cell acetylcholinesterase (RBC-AChE). Extrapolation of these results to a mathematical model for recreational swimmers and bathers exposed to contaminated swimming pools and surface waters typically detected after bait application again are an order of magnitude below the doses needed to cause a detectable change in RBC-AChE. These data indicate that exposure to aqueous malathion following usual aerial bait applications is not appreciably absorbed, and therefore, it is not a public health hazard.

Seed Pool Dynamics of a Great Basin Sagebrush Community in the Context of Restoration

Restoration of Great Basin sagebrush communities is often attempted without understanding the potential impacts of either restoration treatments on the seed pool or the seed pool on restoration efforts. In addition, few studies have examined seed pools of the Great Basin and the role of vegetation in structuring seed pool communities. I evaluated soil seed pool dynamics of a Great Basin sagebrush community in a restoration context. In Chapter 1, I determined the relationship between the compositions of the seed pool and aboveground vegetation and the effect of shrubs (microhabitat effects) and perennial bunchgrass cover (community phase effects) on the seed pool community composition, seed density, and seed pool species richness. To evaluate the relationship between the two communities and the effects of microhabitat and community phase, the aboveground vegetation and the soil seed pools of different community phases and microhabitats were sampled prior to restoration. Similarity and distance metrics and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) were used to asses the relationship between the two communities. NMDS and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine the effects of aboveground community phase and microhabitat on the seed pool community. Results suggest that the relationship between the aboveground vegetation and seed pool community compositions varied according to the organizational level used for vegetation. In addition, microhabitat and community phase did influence seed density but not species richness. I sought to evaluate the effects of restoration treatments on the seed pool community in Chapter 3. To assess the impacts of restoration treatments, the seed pool community before and after treatments was censused. NMDS of the seed pool community and ANOVA on dominant species of the seed pool were performed to determine treatment effects. Results from this research suggest seed pool community composition and seed density varied temporally and spatially. Tebuthiuron and Plateau may have altered community composition whereas prescribed burn affected seed density. This research is applicable for land managers by helping determine the most effective restoration treatment, which will include effects on the seed pool.

The new proposed building Leisure time centre Brno is to create a dignified place for leisure activities, especially for water sports and more attractive place around the Brno dam. Rowing sport has a long tradition near Brno and also today there are two rowing clubs and this sport is in great demand. The new center will offer more options, greater capacity and more advanced technology. The basic idea of architectural design is to incorporate the object into the environment so as not to interfere with the character of the surrounding landscape and doesn‘t protrude from the surrounding buildings. Leisure time centre consists of two buildings, rowing club and accommodation for students. Both objects are separated by different shapes . The building of Rowing Club consists of four masses whose shape is inspired s of rowing sport, especially shape of oars. There was effort to create an architectural form that will be close to the sport, its curves will be resemble the motion, grace and speed…..they are characteristics of rowing sport. In the building is located restaurant, administrative part, sports part and boathouse. Accommodation for students is in the form of rails, offers accommodation for students who represent their faculty in the rowing sport.

Seismic high-frequency content loads on structures and components within nuclear facilities

Sweden is generally considered to be a low seismicity area, but for structures within nuclear power facilities, the safety level demand with respect to seismic events are high and thus, these structures are required to be earthquake-resistant. The seismic hazard is here primarily considered to be associated with near-field earthquakes. The nuclear power plants are further founded on hard rock and the expected ground motions are dominated by high frequencies. The design earthquake considered for the nuclear facilities has an annual probability of 10-5 events, that is, the probability of occurrence is once per 100 000 years. The focus of the study is the seismic response of large concrete structures for the nuclear power industry, with regard not only to the structure itself but also to non-structural components attached to the primary structure, and with emphasis on Swedish conditions. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to summarize and demonstrate some important aspects when the seismic load is dominated by high frequencies. Additionally, an overview of laws, regulations, codes, standards, and guidelines important for seismic analysis and design of nuclear power structures is provided. The thesis includes two case studies investigating the effect of seismic high-frequency content loads. The first study investigates the influence of gaps in the piping supports on the response of a steel piping system subjected to a seismic load dominated by high amplitudes at high frequencies. The gaps are found in the joints of the strut supports or are gaps between the rigid box supports and the pipe. The piping system is assessed to be susceptible to high-frequency loads and is located within the reactor containment building of a nuclear power plant. The stress response of the pipe and the acceleration response of the valves are evaluated. The second study investigates the effect of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) on the response of an elevated rectangular water-containing concrete pool subjected to a seismic load with dominating low and high frequencies, respectively. The pool is located within the reactor containment building of a boiling water reactor at a nuclear power plant. The hydrodynamic pressure distribution is evaluated together with the stress distribution in the walls of the tank. From the two case studies, it is evident that the response due to a seismic load dominated by high frequencies and low frequencies, respectively, is different. Although the seismic high-frequency load may be considered non-damaging for the structure, the effect may not be negligible for non-structural components attached to the primary structure. Including geometrical non-linear effects such as gaps may however reduce the response. It was shown that the stress response for most of the pipe elements in the first case study was reduced due to the gaps. It may also be that the inclusion of fluid-structure interaction effects changes the dynamic properties of a structural system so that it responds significantly in the high frequency range, thus making it more vulnerable to seismic loads dominated by high frequencies. In the second case study, it was shown that even for a seismic load with small amplitudes and short duration, but with dominating high-frequency content, as the Swedish 10-5 design earthquake, the increase of the dynamic response as fluid-structure interaction is accounted for is significant. / <p>QC 20150519</p>

Vernal Pool Vegetation and Soil Patterns Along Hydrologic Gradients in Western Massachusetts

This study looks at relationships along the hydrologic gradient between and within six pools; including the vegetation community, soil characteristics and hydrology. Pool conditions were monitored weekly throughout the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons. Each pool was equipped with permanent platinum-tipped redox probes to quantify the severity and duration of soil reduction. We described and analyzed 12 soil profiles in each pool, distributed in summit/upland, basin, and rim/transition positions as defined by the high water line. The pools were systematically surveyed for understory vegetation during the 2012 growing season. Vegetation patterns varied between study areas. No clear pattern of unique vegetation was evident from an ordination of the gradient communities. Time series redox potential data showed a visual relationship to water table fluxuation, but also a dampening effect from soil organic matter content in the basin positions.
