The socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS : a case study of elderly people caring for HIV infected individuals in the Ugu North District, KwaZulu-Natal.

Phakathi, Thabo Michael. January 2010 (has links)
This study explores the socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS on the elderly in the Ugu North District, KwaZulu-Natal. This study employs qualitative methods using in-depth interviews. The sample consisted of 6 females and 6 males aged 60 and above. The respondents were all black. The respondents either had lived or were living with an HIV/AIDS infected individual in their household. The findings of the study indicate that the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among the younger generation places a huge social and economic burden on the elderly people, especially those who are caring for HIV infected individuals in their households. The findings of the study show that the elderly are carrying a huge burden because of HIV/AIDS. Elderly men and women revealed the trauma of seeing their children dying in front of them. Providing treatment to a sick person, losing a child, loss of income, stigma and discrimination and caring for grandchildren were some of the difficulties faced by elderly people. The results of the study suggest that elderly people should be a key focus of HIV/AIDS discourse. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.

Intimate partner violence as an obstacle to safer sex practice in South Africa.

Ogunmefun, Catherine Ajibola. January 2003 (has links)
Intimate partner violence is one of the major forms of violence against women, and it contributes to the inability of women to practice safer sex. This study uses a triangulation method to explore the relationship between intimate partner violence and condom use. Secondary data was used for both the quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results from both the quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed that women who report intimate partner violence are less likely to use condom. Other results from the quantitative analysis revealed that women with high socio-economic status are more likely to use condom. However, the qualitative analysis revealed that women experience intimate partner violence irrespective of their socio-economic status. Nevertheless, the two analyses revealed that a woman is less likely to use condom if her partner dislikes it. Moreover, negotiating for condom use could lead to further violence. As a result of this, there is need to target both men and women when addressing the issues of intimate partner violence and safer sex practice. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

An exploratory study of the citizenship processes of immigrants to South Africa : a case study of Pakistanis in Durban.

Pillay, Natashya Kristanna. January 2010 (has links)
The number of Pakistani immigrants who are becoming citizens of South Africa is on the increase. This research was conducted with Pakistani citizens in Durban, South Africa, to examine the individual, social and political decision-making processes that resulted in their citizenship. The motivation for embarking on this study was to highlight the complexity involved in the process of contemplating and acquiring citizenship. In addition to this, local migration literature concentrates on African immigrants, thus this study on the citizenship processes of former Asian immigrants was necessary. Fifteen in-depth interviews were conducted with Pakistani citizens to determine their motivations to acquire citizenship and their experiences with local people and authorities. Pakistani citizens gained citizenship primarily for personal reasons. However, a range of contextual factors were also taken into consideration when deciding whether citizenship would be worthwhile. Social and political factors as well as the circumstances in the country of origin and the destination country were considered during the decision-making process. Durban was favoured as a city to settle in as Pakistani citizens believed it had a multitude of opportunities in comparison with other locations in South Africa. Furthermore, locals have embraced them and this has allowed them to assimilate into local society relatively easily. Pakistani citizens participate politically and make efforts to redress social inequalities; furthermore they are skilled professionals who have honest intentions. Thus they would like locals to abandon the negative preconceptions they hold towards foreigners. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.

Experiences of teenage mothers in the informal settlements : an analysis of young females' reproductive health challenges, a case study of Siyanda informal settlement.

Govender, Carminee. January 2012 (has links)
The reported percentage of births attributable to school going learners has highlighted the concern for adolescents engaging in early and unsafe sexual practices. A review of literature suggests that early sexual initiation and the likelihood of experiencing teenage pregnancy can impede on adolescents' ability to acquire skills, attain high levels of education, and access socioeconomic opportunities. Relatively less attention has been paid to the reproductive patterns and sexual behaviour of adolescents within informal settlements. This research, conducted in Siyanda informal settlement on the outskirts of KwaMashu Township, is designed to explore the sexual patterns and reproductive behaviour of the adolescents there. The study examines differences in sexual behaviour and childbearing experiences among teen mothers, currently pregnant teens; and those that have never experienced pregnancy. The findings suggest that the majority of adolescents residing in informal settlements experiment with and engage in sexual intercourse at ages much earlier than 19. Most teenagers experienced their first sexual intercourse by the second year of high school education. Teen mothers reported higher incidence of multiple sexual partners. Across all adolescents interviewed, the preferred sexual partners were much older males because of level of maturity, financial status; and the ability to negotiate use of contraceptives. Part of the cause of high incidents of teenage pregnancy within this environment was the lack of consistent usage of contraceptives. Many adolescents perceived usage of contraceptives to be impractical prior to conception of first birth. The experience of childbearing was found to have detrimental implications on these young females‟ educational attainment. Many of these adolescent failed to resume school to complete their education due to the lack of emotional and financial support from their partners and family members. Many adolescents highlighted their discontent with the lack of youth integration with the lack of youth integration in community based programmes. Furthermore, communication barriers in nearby health facilities as well as transport restricted their accessibility to obtain counselling with regards to their sexual activities and reproductive patterns. Thus, it is recommended that service delivery should be improved, including providing more health facilities especially the range of methods through which health officials such as nurses, social workers and counsellors which can be made easily accessible to these adolescents on a regular basis. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.

The impact of family structure on schooling outcomes for children in South Africa.

Ndagurwa, Pedzisai. 20 October 2014 (has links)
This study investigates the impact of family structure on schooling outcomes for children aged 7 to 17 years in South Africa. There is limited recent national research focusing on examining factors affecting schooling outcomes for children beyond economic factors in South Africa. Most literature available is either based on selected provinces, communities and Demographic Surveillance Areas or studied schooling outcomes without delineating the effect of the family structures children live in. This study uses data on a sample of 225 538 children obtained from the Community Survey of 2007 (CS2007) which was conducted by Statistics South Africa. It identifies a taxonomy of family structures unique to South Africa in comparison to other parts of the world especially the developed world given the effects of long term migration and macro-social transformations such as HIV/AIDS, increase in urbanisation, decreasing marriage rates and increasing out-of-wedlock births all of which lead to more complex family structures being observed. The study uses quantitative techniques employing logistic and ordinary least squares regression models to analyse the odds of school enrolment for children and average highest grade completed for age. The results of the study show that family structure impacts on schooling outcomes for children significantly. The study thus arrives at the conclusion that, controlling for all other variables like age, sex, population group, province of residence, socioeconomic status and type of school, family structure has a significant impact on the schooling outcomes of children in South Africa. / M.A. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2013.

Estudo da ancestralidade paterna em amostras de populações do Estado do Rio de Janeiro e do Oeste Africano: uma dinâmica populacional / Study of paternal ancestry in samples from Rio de Janeiro and West Africa: a populational dynamic

Andréa Maria de Oliveira 02 February 2015 (has links)
The use of STR and SNP markers has proved to be of great importance to discriminate individuals of the same population as well as for evolutionary studies. The use of a set of 17 STRs and 46 SNPs specific from the Y chromosome allowed the characterization of a group of samples representative of the Rio de Janeiro and the West African populations, with a deep assessment of the paternal ancestry. The first part of this study focused in the analysis of 605 males of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The results showed no significant differences between the Brazilian southeastern populations and Rio de Janeiro, which showed high values of haplotype (0.9999 0.0001) and haplogroup (0.7589 0.0171) diversities. The second part of the study revealed a high haplotype diversity (1.0000 0.0018) in a sample from West Africa. The value of haplogroup diversity (0.6895 0.0200) was similar to those previously seen in the West and Center African Bantu populations, mainly from Benin, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. The third part of this study showed no significant differences between the African component of our sample from Rio de Janeiro and the Southeastern, Western and Midwestern African populations. On the other hand, significant differences were observed when comparing the samples of the African component in Rio de Janeiro and of West Africa with population samples from Uganda, Kenya and South Africa. The increase of genetic studies in African populations is important for a better understanding of world genetic diversity. This work provided new genetic data, which can be added to those already available, expanding our knowledge about the formation of other populations also influenced by the African Diaspora.

Condições de saúde bucal dos idosos moradores no município de São Paulo / Oral heath conditions among the elderly population living in the City of São Paulo in 2006 [dissertation]

Teixeira, Doralice Severo da Cruz 18 October 2007 (has links)
Introduction - The aging of the population has material effects on the dental assistance organization. Purpose - The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical conditions of dental health among the elderly population living in the city of São Paulo in 2006. Methodology - The SABE Study - Health, Welfare and Aging is a multicenter study made in seven countries of Latin America and Caribbean region. The first phase of this study began in 2000, having become a longitudinal study in 2006, year at which 1,212 people of 65 years old or more were examined, representing 515.040 elderly resident in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. 15 dental surgeons conducted the exams according to the methodological criteria established by the Wealth World Organization. Results - DMFT (number of lost or restored teeth or teeth with caries) rate average was 29.87 in the female population and 27.42 in the male population. The DMFT frequency had a variation from 7 to 32 in the female population and 8 to 32 in the male population. There were no elderly elements with all their permanent teeth. The more prevailing treatment was extraction. Among the female population 90.84% have no upper high sextant and 84.56% have no anterior sextant. Among the male population 82.11% and 74.96%, respectively, have no sextants. Attachment losses from 0 to 3 mm were more frequent in both male and female population. The prevalence of total edentulism was 69.40% in the female population and 30.60% in the male population; 74.48% of women and 53.43% of men have total superior prostheses implanted and 45.51% of women and 33.77% of men have total inferior prostheses implanted. The use of total superior and inferior prosthesis prevailed among 44.40% in the female population and 32.90% in the male population; on the other hand, the removable partial prosthesis was more common in the inferior arcade of the female population (16.38%). The average of population in the need but without a total prosthesis was 5.70%, and the largest percentage was found among the male population (14.78%). The necessity of total prosthesis was more prevailing, followed by removable partial prosthesis. Among the elderly population that has other prosthesis types implanted, the average of present teeth was 11.62 in the female population and 13.84 in the male population. As to the presence of injury in soft tissues in the oral cavity, 18.93% in the female population and 15.95% in the male population have any kind of injury. Conclusion - The female population had a higher DMFT ratio than the male population. Except the number of teeth with caries, which was higher among the male population, the other elements showed a higher prevalence among the female population. As to the periodontal condition, the higher prevalence of sextants inexistency was found, as well as the edentulous women, and the use o prosthesis. The presence of injury in the oral soft tissues was more prevailing among the female population. It is possible to conclude that the female population had more access to dental services and the male population has more accrued necessities. By the scope of the mutilation showed by women and accrued necessities found among the male population it is possible to conclude that a new approach should be use to address dental treatment in the elderly population.
