Impacts of Postmodernity Factors on the Association Between Maternal Distress and Children's Delinquency Among Low-income Families

Bessa, Yawo 12 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the effects of postmodern factors on the relationship between maternal distress and children's delinquency. It seeks to understand the factors associated with distress levels of mothers whose children exhibit delinquency in order to potentially decrease the cost associated with mental health problems especially in mothers. Another goal of this study is to contribute to the sociological analysis of mental health problems which seem to be the reserved domain of the discipline of psychology and related subfields. The data came from the third wave of the 3-city study with N = 1835. The ages of the children range from 5 to 18 years old. The analysis of the data using regression analysis suggests children's delinquency significantly affects maternal distress in mothers. The study also indicates postmodernity factors did not moderate the association between maternal distress and children's delinquency. However, postmodern factors have significant, separate, and direct effects on maternal distress. For example, employment and religion have positive influences on maternal distress. The research points toward weakness in the postmodern perspective. It also underlines the importance of a sociological approach to the assessment and treatment of distress problems among mothers with low-income. Agencies working with low-income families should integrate the sociological approach in their intervention programs. Additionally, the study uncovers possible problems with assessment criteria used by these agencies to determine eligibility for assistance among low-income families such as education levels; and consequently calls for further investigation.

Sociologické čtení postmoderní literatury na příkladu prózy Dona DeLilla / Reading Don DeLillo (Sociological Interpretation of Postmodern Literature)

Stehlík, Martin January 2015 (has links)
The relation between sociology and literature opens up a broad field for discussion because of their closeness. The diploma thesis pursues a rather uncommon approach to literature that searches for manifestations of sociological thought in literature in order to use them within contexts of thematically similar sociological theories. A considerable attention is paid to definition of this approach, especially in relation to standard methods of sociology of literature, and to subsequent formulation of its methodological starting-points. Sociological reading as introduced in the text interprets a literary work in the perspective of selected sociological theories to which the interpretation is reversely related in the following step. In the thesis the novel White Noise by Don DeLillo, a classical work of American postmodern fiction, is taken as an object of such interpretation. The theme of effects of the mass media in contemporary society marked out widely in the beginning is specified by selected theories of Jean Baudrillard and Niklas Luhmann. In the case of Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality and simulation, changes in relation between reality and representation, respectively disappearance of their traditional opposition, are concerned. Luhmann's social systems theory is used to explore the...

The Politics of Disaster and Their Role in Imagining an Outside. Understanding the Rise of the Post-Fukushima Anti-Nuclear Movements

Tamura, Azumi January 2015 (has links)
Political disillusionment is widespread in contemporary Japanese society, despite people’s struggles in the recession. Our social relationships become entangled, and we can no longer clearly identify our interest in politics. The search for the outside of stagnant reality sometimes leads marginalised young people to a disastrous imaginary for social change, such as war and death. The imaginary of disaster was actualised in March 2011. The huge earthquake and tsunami caused the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which triggered the largest wave of activism since the 1960s. Based on the author’s fieldwork on the post-Fukushima anti-nuclear movements in Tokyo, this thesis investigates how the disaster impacted people’s sense of agency and ethics, and ultimately explores the new political imaginary in postmodernity. The disaster revealed the interconnected nature of contemporary society. The thesis argues that their regret about their past indifference to politics motivated the protesters into social commitment without any totalising ideology or predetermined collective identity. They also found an ambiguity of the self, which is insufficient to know what should be done. Hence, they mobilise their bodies on to the streets, encountering others, and forcing themselves to feel and think. This is an ethical attitude, yet it simultaneously stems from the desire of each individual to make a difference to the self and society. The thesis concludes that the post-Fukushima anti-nuclear movements signify a new way of doing politics as endless experiments by collectively responding to an unexpected force from an outside in a creative way.

Postmodernita hledá postgender: Brophy, Winterson a Place / Postmodernity's Search for Postgender: Brophy, Winterson and Place

Peková, Olga January 2014 (has links)
Postmodernity's Search for Postgender: Bropy, Winterson and Place (Abstract) The thesis examines three formally very diverse texts published in 1969, 1993 and 2013 respectively that creatively approach and subvert the gender binary: Brigid Brophy's In Transit, Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body and Vanessa Place's Boycott. Based on Jean-François Lyotard's conception of postmodernism as modernism in a constantly nascent state, the author advances a hypothesis of "postgender." This however does not mean overcoming gender for good (as it is sometimes understood, for example by Rosi Braidotti), but as a structural momentum, a possibility of subversion at the heart of any gender schema and currently therefore of genderism, i.e. the belief that gender is necessarily binary and that aspects of our gender are inherently linked to our sex assigned at birth. Apart from feminist theory and literary criticism, the thesis also touches on the field of transgender studies, psychoanalysis, philosophy of history and most importantly the work of Jacques Derrida. In so doing it tries to articulate the notion of postgender as part and parcel of the condition of postmodernity and a culmination of the modern split of the subject, leading to a certain cultural gender turn during the 1990s. The work nevertheless remains...

An Analytical and Descriptive Assessment of Michael Fullan's Scholarship on Educational Change

Escobar-Arcay, David Alcides January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Robert J. Starratt / This thesis is a descriptive and analytical study of the complete works of Michael Fullan as a scholar of educational change. Fullan is one of the foremost individuals who have helped established the field of educational change and who continues to push the field forward. This dissertation investigates, articulates and interrogates the intellectual and strategic contributions of Fullan in the scholarly field of educational change. This is a critical description and examination of the historical events and trends that influenced his research and to which he was responding. It provides insight into a significant area of practice and research in educational administration by looking at the development of a field through the intellectual contributions of one of its most important authorities. The main purpose is to highlight the development and cogency of Fullan's ideas in the field of educational change through an examination and exploration of his intellectual underpinnings. This study was grounded in the qualitative research tradition, particularly rooted in a conceptual framework of hermeneutics. The task was to search for an understanding rather than explanation and for interpretation rather than prediction. Thus, in this study the researcher was the primary instrument for data collection and analysis. Data was using collected various artifacts, namely: books, journal articles, scholarly papers, technical reports, conference papers, dissertations about Fullan, web-site reports and/or papers, newspaper articles and publicity material. More specifically, Fullan's writings were primarily accessed through various venues: the internet (especially his website: http://www.michaelfullan.ca/), college libraries and professors who use his books. One person-to-person interview was conducted to clarify. Data was critically analyzed and reported thematically and chronologically in order to position Fullan's works within those historical periods and to identify the development and evolution of his theory of change. Findings indicate several periods of education reform: innovation and diffusion, school effectiveness and school improvement, restructuring and reculturing, large-scale reform and post-standardization. Fullan's assessments of each period revealed that he has been more influential in the large-scale reform period than the others. Themes unfolding highlighted the importance of stakeholders (students, teachers, principals, parents and community, district administrators, consultants) and concepts (process, objective and subjective assumptions, moral purpose, relationships, knowledge, sustainability, complexity/chaos & evolutionary theories, systems, paradoxes, coherence and theory of action. Connections to key thinkers in sociology, educational change and mentors as well as Fullan' unique approach to the change process among various other change process models, definitions and perspectives were highlighted. Development and evolution of Fullan's theory of education is underscored by the influence of early mentors in sociology as well as decades of emphasis on certain critical issues within the literature: namely, the absence of the implementation perspective (1970s), meaning-making (1980s), capacity-building (1990s), systems-leading (2000s) and a more recent post-standardization era. Critical and positive commentaries on particular Fullan's works reveal multiple and often opposing values, assumptions and purposes of education that characterize scholar's experiences and advocacy. The paper concludes with a brief personal and critical reflection on Fullan's educational change literature highlighting strengths, weaknesses and the future challenges for scholars in the field. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Emergence du récit écologiste dans le milieu de l'architecture 1989-2015 : de la réglementation à la thèse de l'anthropocène / Appearance of the environmental narrative in the world of architecture 1989-2015

Mosconi, Léa 03 October 2018 (has links)
The 1990s and 2000s are often punctuated by global political events, participating to do, what we then called sustainable development, a major societal issue. How he gets this story on ecology the architectural environment? What lexical field he summons? Which actors do they seize it? What institutions are these themes and to which directions? What influence he has on the French architectural? The aim of this research is to understand the genealogy of the environmental story in the architectural environment, regulatory and energy issues in the 1990s paradigm shift taking place in the late 2000s, especially with the emergence the thesis of the Anthropocene

The routine of everyday work in mental health care giving and the production of pleasure: cartography

Martines, Wania Regina Veiga 20 June 2011 (has links)
Pertencer e estar implicado traz as intensidades conjugadas. / The research was done at the Psychosocial Attention Center (CAPS) Perdizes, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The aim of this study was to map the possible territories that produce pleasure in the everyday work routine of mental health care providers, correlating the whole staff. The cartographic method was used for the data in four modalities: panoramic participant observation; focused participant observation; personal interviews with the interdisciplinary staff members; and group work, so that a flowchart showing the work process could be drawn. Psychosocial area, postmodernity and cartography were the theoretical references chosen for this study. The discussion was held over the observation of three interconnected territories: 1) the nomadism related to the logic of care; 2) team confidence, i.e.: common vibrations and the processes of negotiation; and 3) the in situ process and its concreteness and subtleties (andandand). Vibrations, such as affection and unrooting were observed in all territories. The map, as a coreless system, different from the tracing system, showed multiple entrances and exits. Pleasure, satisfaction and similar feelings were present in the staffs narratives in a remarkable way. In such territories, the production of subjectiveness, as the main characteristic of care giving, is imperative. It is a kind of law followed by the subjects, bringing about the concrete aspect of the psychosocial action in the everyday work routine. However, such subjectiveness may fall apart and be reset by means of disordered affections, unexpected negotiations and creativity. Consequently, subjectiveness flows in a varied way acquiring unique characteristics in order to produce life. The feelings that surround the subjects are usually pleasure and satisfaction. However, they may also feel discomfort and tiredness of trying multiple ways, of questioning their own practice or being questioned by the collective during the care giving in mental health. The sense of belonging or being implicated brings about both feelings at the same time. Tiredness and happiness all together are present in the staff narratives and gestures many times, especially when those feelings are related to contact with patients. Unity and uniqueness were evident in the collective as dimensions of the routine in everyday work, either because the staff shows consistence when choosing unity to act against the traditional mental health system or because they feel protected by the actions of the collective. Acting collectively represents its natural subjects uniqueness (heteroxy) and actions. Collectiveness maintains a permanent, tense and pleasant place for negotiations. The logic for postmodern thought in which the notion of identity (subject) may shift to identification (attractiveness among subjects), legitimizes the existence of pleasure as affection, feeling or dimension since it occurs primarily among subjects.

O papel visionário da arte na expressividade do vestir cotidiano / Art\'s visionary part in the daily expression of dressing up

Nobriga, Heloisa de Sá 24 August 2018 (has links)
The construction of individualized personal appearance has been gaining prominence as expressive potential, its finalization has increasingly migrated from the tutelary suggestion, both industry and renowned stylists to the hands of the final consumer. With the multiplication of the aesthetic possibilities offered by the fashion system, users have more breadth to select the aesthetic elements that symbolically translate their way of being, beliefs and values, personality, lifestyle, among other subjective and unique configurations. On the other hand, this clothes is still limited by adaptations of belonging to the social collective and industrial impositions that are responsible for offering products that will be accessible in the market following the capitalist logic of massification. Individuals are thus trapped between the technicities of clothing and their inherent expressive power, which is dimmed by the mass production system of fashion, which from the outset has its mechanism and visuality investigated by avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century. Without strings to the implications of consumption, artists will, during the entire twentieth century, promote clothing to the level of experience, and question paradigms of appearance by dressing, making visuals emerge, pointing to trends in fashion behavior. This work studies the artist Hans Eijkelboom that emerges in the late twentieth and early twentieth centuries, embodying the exploring visionary of clothing in its expressive aesthetic potential, as an inseparable tool of experience. With this intent will be analyzed excerpts from the History of Fashion, the issue of individuality related to dress, and readings of images of some works of Hans Eijkelboom.

A cultura dos novos museus: arquitetura e estética na contemporaneidade / The culture of new museums: architecture and aesthetics in contemporaneity

Meira, Marcel Ronaldo Morelli de 28 March 2014 (has links)
This paper examines the shapes architecture acquired since 1970´s, in the context of changes that have occurred in the cultural and economic world order. We begin by analyzing the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris (1977), by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers which is considered the inaugural landmark of the culture of museums. Then, we examine the Guggenheim Bilbao (1997), by Frank Gehry, taking it as a symptom of iconic architecture and media. Next, we show that due to the slowdown of the real economy, resulting from successive international financial crises, there was a reorientation of the architecture of museums to less spectacular shapes, as evidenced by the expansion of the Prado Museum (2007), in Madrid, Rafael Moneo, and the new Louvre in Lens (2012), in France, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue of Nishizawa (SANAA). Such new global trend, expressed in the abandonment of iconic architecture, is characterized by more parsimonious shapes. We found, at the end, the retraction of this culture of museums, both indicted as in emphasis in more austere buildings, as in the role assumed by the city in recent years, at the expense of architectural form.
