Bibblan svarar – ett tecken i tiden : En virtuell referenstjänst ur ett postmodernt perspektiv

Wirström, Sofia January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine the virtual reference service Ask the Library [Bibblan svarar] from a postmodern perspective. Ask the Library is a Swedish online reference service that is run by the country’s public libraries. The postmodern theories of Jean-François Lyotard are used to study how information is managed and transmitted within the service. From this point-of-view three aspects of the reference service are studied; how the information is affected by the virtual environment, the librarian’s role within the service and finally how the content of the service is managed. The methods for extracting data are a blend of qualitative interviews and online observations. The data is then analyzed from a theoretical viewpoint. The result shows that there are several postmodern tendencies in Ask the Library. Namely the service shows a number of indications toward plurality. This can be related to Lyotard’s theory of the downfall of the grand narratives since postmodern theories celebrate the idea of plurality and diversity. Ask the Library is complex and dynamic in the sense that it adapts its services to the users. In addition to a multilingual service, Ask the Library also offers the users reference help in the form of social network sites like Facebook and Twitter. This makes the service more varied but also deeply complex. The reference service also emphasizes on the librarian’s individual competence and promotes personal knowledge and expertise. In Lyotard’s postmodern theories there is a rejection of absolute and objective truths and this falls in line with the subjectivity that the reference service celebrates. Ask the Library has two different agendas; providing qualitative reference service to the users and also promoting the librarians and their skills. The information, or content, in the service is still organized and under examination by the librarians. Critique of the sources is an important skill for a librarian within Ask the Library to have. These traditional ideas of objective truth are balanced with the new virtual environment that often promotes collective construction of information and knowledge. This study is a two years master’s thesis in the academic field library and information science.

Z. Baumano socialinė filosofija / Z. Bauman's Postmodern Social Philosophy

Barevičiūtė, Jovilė 23 May 2005 (has links)
Postmodern social philosophy of Z. Bauman is considered in this master’s thesis making emphasis on its main frames and aspects. The thinker analyses the phenomenon of globalization basing on dialectics of globalism and localism and states that globalization in fact is glocalization, that means some are becoming more and more global while others become more local and provincial. Globalization and localization are two sides of this process: some are globalizing because others are localizing, and there are no any without others. In Z. Bauman’s opinion, the phenomenon of globalization has become vital for the concept of the society itself. Release from the panoptical individuals’ levelling mechanisms and regimes of modernity marks the end of the traditional community as well as reign of individualistic communitarianism. In his philosophy, Z. Bauman emphasizes significance of growing urbanization and individualization as its result for decay of collective relations. This problem discloses transformations of postmodern ethics and morality. Z. Bauman defines postmodern morality as morality without ethics. Following E. Levinas’ asymmetry of I-Thou relation, the thinker analyses problems of individual’s identity, mass culture and Holocaust. Z. Bauman’s social research of postmodernity is essential for philosophic consideration of certain transformations of modernity phenomena in the era of postmodernity and for defining of modernity and postmodernity relation as well distinguishing... Allegories of Modernity, Geographies of Memory

Jeon, Seenhwa 2012 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines how postmodernist narratives of memory in Graham Swift's Waterland, Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, and Amitav Ghosh's The Shadow Lines retrieve the stories of those who have been lost or forgotten in official history and refigure the temporal and spatial imaginary in intertwining personal stories of crisis with public history through acts of remembering. Questioning the modernist ideology of progress based on the idea of linear sequence of time, the novels not only retrace the heterogeneous and discontinuous layers of stories overlooked or repressed in official accounts of modern history, but also re-examine the contradictory and contested process by which subjects are situated or positioned, and its effects on the production of knowledge. These postmodern historical novels examine history as a discourse and explore its limits. The narrators of the novels are engaged with an autobiographical act of rewriting their lives, but their efforts to reconstitute themselves in unity and continuity are undermined by the disjunctive narrative form of the novels. The layered narrative of memory through which the novels reconstruct modern history is allegorical in the double sense that it exposes the act of signification by decentering the symbol of the transcendental signifier while telling an allegorical story of personal and familial history that mirrors national history in a fragmented way. In Waterland, Tom Crick retells his personal and familial stories intertwined with local and national history as alternative history lessons and challenges the Idea of Progress by revisiting sites of traumatic memory. Midnight's Children constructs counter-stories of Post-Independence India as multiple alternatives to one official version of history and addresses the limits of history in terms of "a border zone of temporality." In The Shadow Lines, the narrator retells his family history as a story of borders through his struggle with gaps in official history and creates a national imaginary with mirror images and events. The postmodernist narrative of memory in these novels turns the time of the now into a time for the "past as to come," a time to detect the unrealized and unfulfilled possibilities of the past, through retellings of the past.

Jiménez Morales, Manel 25 February 2011 (has links)
The aim of this PhD dissertation is to analyze a narrative paradox: how to deal with a drama series story – which should be allegedly a potential infinite tale – when this drama is pressured by an apocalyptic end. The presence of this finale should avoid this ability to defer the story sine dia; nonetheless, that controversial relationship seems to be reliable and absolutely needed in some North American production series, that have as a background the paranoic feeling recalled by the September 11 attacks. To this goal, this research studies the narrative and aesthetic elements which contribute to the serial construction of the following television dramas: 24 (Fox, 2001, Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow), Prison Break (Fox, 2005, Paul Scheuring) and Heroes (NBC, 2006, Tim Kring). This text is divided in three chapters, which concern to three concepts; these three items integrate the main features of the drama series architecture in their wider meaning. Firstly we would like to stress the concept Saturation to define the elements that set up narrative complexity in these series. From this point of view, we analyze the mutual contribution of the television drama series, their hybridisation and their growing plots. The second section, Fragmentation, also begins with the out of time chronology, typical from these series. The spreading plot and the fight against the clock – also other subject issues - lead the stories to a constant fracture, in a structural meaning, but also in metaphorical or literal ones. Finally, the race against the clock makes the story dependent on a certain Simultaneity. That implies to use all sort of technological resources to explain the communication between characters and plots, as an extension of a spying eye. Saturation, Fragmentation and Simultaneity will be three factors that will help to understand the postmodern behavior of the new television dramas.

This work aims to demonstrate the ruptures and resistances encountered by the new epistemological currents, namely postmodernity and its correlative neologisms concerning the investigation of the modern epistemological currents. In this sense, the general objective of this thesis is to present the ideas that created the historical, social and epistemological theories responsible for a certain type of social thought used to understand modern society and its values. This thesis will then highlight the new ideas that have transformed the outlook of “classical” modernity which now demands original and explanatory discourses. For this reason, and methodologically, a bibliographical survey of the historic and epistemological practices, that we usually credit to the social construction of modernity and its probable overcoming, postmodernity, is conducted. Thus, this work also seeks to contribute to the explanation of the socio-cultural and epistemological distinctions and changes responsible for the judgement that the modern individual has of himself and society, compared with the perspective that the contemporary subject attributes to his identity and social relationships. Thus, through a systematic bibliographical analyze and historical comparison, the value of this research lies in the possibility of confrontation between social ideas and practices which have become more common, which have lost their influence or which have emerged in contemporaneity, defying the precepts prevailing within the social science´s policies. Above all, to defend that the modern project of emancipation and regulation of social life is still valid and that the reason for its questioning lies in the overlap of capitalist development and instrumental and technical reason over the paradigms of democratic political action and emancipatory culture proposed by the first moderns.

Adolescer em um contexto fundamentalista pentecostal gaúcho

Luciano de Carvalho Lirio 05 June 2013 (has links)
This research was carried out with the support of CAPES Brasil and proposes a reflection on the adolescence experienced in a Gaúcho Pentecostal fundamentalist context , adopting as parameter the Igreja Batista Conservadora [The Conservative Baptist Church], having as a specific goal to conceptualize what it means to be adolescent in these churches which arise in a neo-Pentecostal, postmodern and pluralist religious Brazilian scenario, but which evoke a belonging to the classical Pentecostal movement begun in the country a century ago. In the first chapter I propose the analysis of the adolescence experienced in fundamentalist religious spaces, and being more specific, in a denomination which was born in Rio Grande do Sul. Observing which cultural manifestations are produced in this scenario, I use as theoretical-methodological references the contributions from Psychology, Sociology, Biological Sciences and their articulation with Theology and Pedagogy in the postmodern perspective. The second chapter proposes a reflection on fundamentalism and its influence on Gaúcho Pentecostal adolescents, having as a specific goal to analyze how the adolescents construct and share particular ways of understanding the globalized world, understand the reality which is drawn out around them and express the faith in a fundamentalist Gaúcho context. In the third chapter the fundamentalism is analyzed in a Christian Protestant Pentecostal cutout, recognizing that other fundamentalist matrices exist and thus delimiting the perimeter of the research. A social research was carried out so as to verify the reality experienced by the adolescents in a Gaúcho Pentecostal fundamentalist context.
