It's Real For Us: The Literariness of Fanfiction and Its Use As Corrective Fiction

Monroe, Lauren W 06 August 2013 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is how fanfiction, an underground subculture of web literature written about popular books, films, television shows, and comics, treats the original works it derives from. In this study I will examine the ways in which fans reshape the original stories of the works they write about, and the ways in which they do not, and speculate the reasons they have chosen to do so. This project examines fanfiction surrounding three young adult novels: Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Harry Potter. I examine each of these works and their respective fanfiction in order to highlight important themes in each work and problems inherent in each story to account for the changes fanfiction writers make in their literature. I have chosen one overarching theme in the fanfiction in each fandom and will explore why fanfiction authors have overwhelmingly chosen to change the source material to suit that theme.

Becoming The Chosen One : The Choice, Identity and Destiny of Harry Potter

Holst, Oscar January 2008 (has links)

The paper examines the philosophical themes of Free Will as opposed to Determinism/Predestination and how they are portrayed in the seven books about Harry Potter. It is discussed whether the character of Harry Potter, but also the world itself in which he acts, seem to be governed primarily by forces of Free Will and/or Determinism. The author concludes that though Harry is indeed strongly tempted to believe in Determinism, influential figures around him direct him towards a different choice - making himself believe in Free Will instead.

No. of bitstreams: 1 000431100-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 1814373 bytes, checksum: 74584040412304ec635228346c8b38a4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011 / New communication technology and media convergence in the internet environment have transformed its users’ habits – internet surfers, consumers, receivers, readers of all kinds of texts – who now have access to channels that allow them to have the possibility of replying, creating and interpreting objects. This confluence in the virtual environment erases borders among texts and media, art, entertainment and information and also between the means of production and reception. The teenage reader, who’s skilled when dealing with technology becomes the model of the hyperreader: the one who is able to read fragmented texts, scattered in the cyberspace, the hyperreading. Fanfiction writing is one of this reader’s practices and an example of reading transformation: now, when using the computer, writing and reading happen together. This latter practice, writing-reading, uses interpretation networks and the disclosure of written texts by fan of various pieces, such as the Harry Potter series, in several kinds of media. The pieces by J. K. Rowling have become the main source of hypotext for writing-reading, as they present a universe full of gaps, which lead the reader towards creation. This paper gathers theories of Reception Aesthetics, Intermedia and Literary Studies and approximates the strategies used in the Harry Potter books, media convergence and the possibility of media enabling writing-reading as a way of transforming the reader’s habits. These changes have reshaped the literary system – authors, texts and readers are no longer the same, as hypermedia is the only way of representing the world.

Pitta, Patricia Indiara Magero January 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2013-08-07T19:03:10Z (GMT). This dissertation, thus, aims to reflect upon the possibilities of the influence played by image contents, present in the book, in the formation of children’s imaginary. The investigation, which departs from Jung’s postulates on the role played by fundamental images in the unconscious, and from Vigotski’s statements on the reception of the literary work, departs from both a review of the child character in children’s literature, both in the past and nowadays, and a contextualization of the post-modern moment.

What role do tasks play in an EFL environment? Unfolding 9th grade learners' perceptions on the implementation of a cycle of tasks on the first chapter of 'Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone'

Afonso, Joseline Caramelo January 2016 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês: Estudos Linguísticos e Literários, Florianópolis, 2016 / Made available in DSpace on 2016-10-11T04:03:03Z (GMT). The tasks were designed under Skehan's (1996, 1998) frameworks for task analysis and implementation, and their respective teaching procedures, which followed the pedagogical principles of the task-based approach (Ellis, 2003), with the purpose of preparing students to read the first chapter of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' (Rowling, 1999). Furthermore, the tasks also took into consideration the themes brought in PCNLE(1998), the concept of focus on form (Ellis, 2012; Long,1991), which lies at the core of task-based lessons, Long's (2015) needs analysis concept, and the elements of planning by Fosterand Skehan (1996; 1999) and repetition by Bygate (2001). The seventeen teenage EFL learners from Colégio de Aplicação, who attended fourteen classes, answered post-task questionnaires at the end of each class and took part in an interview in the end ofthe task cycle. All data collected was submitted to qualitative analysis. The results showed that, for this group of teenage EFL learners, TBA was perceived as effective in promoting learning opportunities, and that the cycle of tasks was indeed successful in leading them to read the first chapter of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". Moreover, participants' perceptions reflect the teaching principles of TBA as well as the elements, procedures and concepts of the theoretical frameworks used to guide the development and implementation of the cycle of tasks, such as focus on meaning and tasks' resemblance to real world. Results also showed that (1) Skehan's frameworks are resourceful in balancing the task level of difficulty and the learners' attention between meaning and form; (2) adding games to the cycle of tasks was motivational and important in students' perspective; and (3) planning and repetition should be seen in more dynamic ways than what it is proposed within the frames so as to meet the needs and demands of the complexity of the classroom environment. Finally, this study indicates that designing and implementing a cycle of tasks can promote improvement in teacher understanding of the learning and teaching processes, and contribute to a teacher's education.

Johansson, Emelie, Wallberg, Lina January 2018 (has links)

The popularization of the Internet changed the way society is organized, including the ease - and speed – to access information, the ability to relate to other members of the public and the opportunity to create new readings of the original texts. In order to identify how the fans are an active media consumption sphere, the Brazilian fan site Potterish dedicated to Harry Potter was chosen as the object of this research. Using the content analysis as a methodology, this paper considers the structure of Potterish and the fanworks presented on the fan site, the news section publications in the last quarter of 2015, the texts of the columns section with interpretations of the story published in 2014 and 2015 and coverage held on Potterish profiles on Twitter and Facebook about the announcement of the publishing of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This work is based on the theoretical framework produced by fans studies, especially the authors Booth, Duffett, Fiske, Hills and Jenkins, and the authors that contribute to the understanding of contemporary society, as Thompson and Canclini. Research results showed that the fan site structure mainly represents the pleasures of performance of Duffett (2013), related to the activities whose purpose is to experience the fandom, the news selection gathers information in Portuguese about what is new related to the franchise, the columns of the Potterish are highlighted by interpretations of the story that is not explicit in the books and the activity of Potterish on social networks websites shows language consistency and greater interaction with the fans than the site itself.
