"Jernvägsfrågan" : Om det offentliga samtalet kring järnvägar i Sverige 1851 / The railroad issue : The public conversation regarding railroads in Sweden 1851Sjösten, Andreas January 2018 (has links)
Despite a situation of poor state finances 1848 marks the starting point of Sweden’s railroad history, as this is year when the country’s first railroad was proposed and approved in parliament. Not sufficient funds for the project was raised though, and a new motion was raised in parliament in 1851 with improved financial support from the state. This caused an intense debate which is the main subject of this essay. By analyzing the public discussion regarding railroads, as expressed in news media, during 1851 this essay aims to analyze the discussions about railroads in search of the 19th century’s overarching themes of modernity and nationalism. These terms are to be understood as rhetorical expressions, in accordance with Aguiars and Andersons interpretation of the terms. The performed analysis displays how nationalism is a theme present in both sides of the debate in 1851, though in different ways. Those skeptical of the planned railroad line argues about the nation being tricked into embarking on an expensive project that will never be financially viable by bought foreign interest. Those in favor argues rather that the project will bind together a fragmented Sweden into one nation. Arguments involving modernity though, are just to be found amongst those in favor. Here we find arguments about the promises that the future holds with railroads connecting the swedes and a pervasive optimism regarding the future. Less concern is displayed to current day problems, other than how it might threaten future railroad expansions.

The study examines the two newspapers’ changed view of the three countries during the course of the war. Furthermore there is a compararition between what the two newspapers wrote. The study is a qualitative and comparative analysis based on material from Dagens Nyheters and Svenska Dagbladets editorial pages. The method that has been used is a qualitative content analysis and a comparative method. Framing theory is used as the study's theoretical ground. The result of the study shows that Dagens Nyheter had a neutral and positive framing of England, a negative and neutral framing of Germany and a mostly negative framing of Germany. "The Awful State of Ireland" : Irländarens avbildning i Punch under Repealrörelsen 1842 – 1848 / "The Awful State of Ireland" : Representations of the Irish in Punch during the Repeal movement 1842 – 1848.Wallin, Alexander January 2023 (has links)
By examining the British satirical magazine Punch's presentation of the Irish during the Repeal-movement, this study explores how satire can be used as a tool for colonial powers to establish dominance over differing nationalities through print media. This has been examined by extracting traits attributed to the Irish in Punch's illustrations and articles from 1842 - 1848, the Repeal independence movements most active years. The study is split into three seperate categories: "The Irish in relation to the Repeal politician Daniel O'Connell"; "The political Irish"; and "Paddy" (the Irish outside of politics). Within these categories the study also found a chronological pattern of Young Ireland gaining increasingly negative attention in Punch as a result of Daniel O'Connell, one of Repeals leaders, leaving the political scene during the last years of his life 1846/1847. The increased attention for Young Ireland is attributed to Punch's rivalry with the Irish nationalist magazine The Nation; Young Irelands mouthpiece. The study found that Punch's disdain towards Repeal supporters such as The Nation, Young Ireland, and Daniel O'Connell extended to their view of the Irish as a people. Although Punch's Irishman is almost exclusivly portrayed as violent and stubborn, these are seen as virtues rather than flaws when used to resist Repeal advocates and Irish politicians. Further, Punch's rivalry with The Nation creates a polemic relationship of British upper-class versus Irish nationalist commoner which can be used as a press historian scale model of the Anglo-Irish conflicts of the 19th century.

Att representera och representeras : samiska kvinnor i svensk och samisk press 1966-2006 / To Represent and be Represented : Sami Women in Swedish and Sami Press, 1966-2006Ledman, Anna-Lill January 2012 (has links)
This doctoral thesis examines how Sami women were represented in Swedish and Sami press during the years 1966, 1986 and 2006. Moreover, it problematises how the image of "the Sami woman" was constructed and represented in the press, in relation to the (re)production of normality and deviance, with special attention to the concepts of ethnicity and gender. The thesis adopts a theoretical framework informed by post-colonial theory and intersectional analysis, and the empirical study was approached through critical discourse analysis. Concepts such as orientalism, intersectionality, and strategic essentialism are central to the study, and the thesis includes discussions on ethics, reflexivity, knowledge and power as well as scrutinizing the hegemonic Western perspective in connection to Sami related research. As the main source materials, the Sami magazine Samefolket, and the Vilhelmina Sami press clippings archive were used. In addition to the articles, some of the women who appeared in the newspapers and magazines were interviewed, providing a valuable complement to the printed source materials. The study shows that Sami women were represented in a stereotypical manner in both Samefolket and in the Swedish press, with clear connections to the image of the Sami as it was formulated in the Swedish Sami policy during the 20th century. The balance between Sami and Swedish ethnicity was given increased attention over time, and women approached the theme by expressing themselves through various forms of art such as literature, film, photography or other extroverted activities. The importance of Sami women for the Sami ethno-political mobilisation appears to be more significant than has previously been noted, however women act from artistic platforms aswell as the traditional political arenas. As the dominant Swedish society, including members of the media, generally hold a low level of knowledge about Sami societies the discussion on Sami society, history and culture is kept at a rudimentary level. As a consequence, opportunities for in-depth discussions that represent the Sami from heterogeneous and alternative perspectives are limited. /
20160120: författaren har numera efternamnet Drugge. /ME
