With its use developed and consolidated in some sectors such as medicine, architecture and robotics, it is still poorly explored in fashion presenting a great potential for construction of wearable surfaces. The use of digital fabrication implies the three-dimensional design of the wearable surface which brings to Fashion Design challenges to be overcome with regard to cost, the use of materials, the distribution of products and especially the forms of creation and construction. Thus, this research aims to investigate the development of three-dimensional surfaces through additive manufacturing processes from the perspective of Surface Design. The feasibility of using these methods for the construction of wearable surfaces is analyzed and strategies for their use are proposed, in order to contribute to the theoretical knowledge about surface design in terms of three-dimensionality and the use of digital manufacturing technologies. To this end, the work begins with a literature review on Surface Design, the manufacture of wearable surfaces throughout history and on digital fabrication, then starts with the analysis of designs carried out by designers involving surfaces. dimensions and digital fabrication, and then proceed with experimentation. Modular construction is proposed as the main strategy for the construction of wearable surfaces through additive manufacturing. / Doutor

An analysis of Print Media information and its accessibility to people with visual impairmentsKumwenda, Sally 12 1900 (has links)
Media is considered as one of the most powerful tools in disseminating information
thereby shaping people’s lives. While there have been various studies about the
relationship between media and people with disabilities, much of the emphasis has
been on the media’s representation of people with disabilities than accessibility of print
content in formats friendly to people with visual impairments. This research is a
qualitative study which looked at the accessibility of online published print media
information to people with visual impairments in terms of format. This was done by
analysing content in online newspapers and magazines to determine its accessibility
to them. Online interviews were also conducted to find out how print media is
accessible to people with visual impairments. The Uses and Gratifications and the
Social Responsibility theories were selected to frame the study on how media satisfies
their specific needs and desires as well as having certain social obligations to society
respectively. The findings of this study were that print media was inaccessible to
people with visual impairments both in terms of formats and content. There is no print
media known to people with visual impairments producing information in Braille format.
The electronic version of printed media proved to be inaccessible due to the lack of
media adherence to the Web Accessibility Guidelines. The research also established
the underrepresentation and lack of representation in some print media due to print
media’s lack of interest to cover disability issues. To respond to these needs, a
framework was developed to ensure that people who are visually impaired are able to
access print media information. / Communication Science / D. Phil. (Communication studies)

Out of Sight, out of mind : analyzing changes in union reporting in Swedish print media 1995-2019Larsson, Klara January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to investigate if there has been a shift over the last 25 years in the discourses on how trade unions are being discussed in Swedish print news media. More specifically, I will investigate whether a social change and change in power relations of trade unions can be detected in the discourses. The questions that guide this study are (1) How have discourses and discursive practices around news media reporting on unions and their role in society changed over the last 25 years? And (2) What kind of power relations can be detected in these discourses? 52 articles from four different print newspapers within the period of 1995–2019 and six semi-structured narrative interviews with union representatives, labor market reporters and think tank representatives compose the study’s material. From the material, three central themes could be extracted and analyzed with the theories of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and power resource theory (PRT). These themes are (1) the coverage of trade unions’ abilities and agencies, where union initiatives rarely are covered and unions, in general, have faded into more of a commentating role. (2) The discourse of the Swedish model serves as a discourse of power and highlights the alliance of unions and employers’ organizations. And lastly (3) how the reporting has moved away from a collective focus to a focus on the individual in the labor market. Conclusively, the study highlights the relational aspects of power and question whether the Swedish model is contra-productive on the part of labor, as the lack of conflicts fails to draw attention and thereby also fails to create a widespread and collective understanding of what unions are and do.

PEELING GARMENTS : Flat garment construction between fabric layers using the printing process as a construction method and the reference of a peeling wallpaper to create expressive dressColja, Monika January 2020 (has links)
This work is a proposal for an alternative approach to working with print, making the printing process a key element within designing. It is an investigation into flat garment construction between fabric layers, as this enables for the printing to be used in place of sewing. Additionally, working with multiple textile layers connects with the reference of the peeling wallpaper, which is used as a base for material and form developments. The aim of the work is to develop a more holistic approach and new expressions in garment-making in relation to the application of printing processes within textile layers. The main objective is to present a new perspective of the relationship between garment pattern and print, bringing the later forward. Not only does the surface print, through the interaction of colour and texture provide an important element in terms of creating expression, but it additionally acts as a construction element. Moreover, by using the process of printing to create form the element of print becomes integrated into the process of garment-making.

Detection of humidity-treated aged latent prints using cyanoacrylate fuming and a reflected ultraviolet imaging system (RUVIS)Kwong, April V. 02 November 2017 (has links)
For the past several decades, challenges in the detection and collection of latent prints exposed to harsh environmental conditions have inspired research in pretreatment methods prior to the application of chemical, physical, or optical-based enhancement techniques. Some of the difficulties associated with processing degraded latent prints are attributed to dehydration, alterations in chemical composition, and physical disturbance of ridge detail. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of humidity, cyanoacrylate fuming method (CFM), and a reflected ultraviolet imaging system (RUVIS) on the detection and collection of aged latent palmprints. Prints were exposed to air flow and ultraviolet (UV) light for a period of 0 to 28 days, and subsequently treated with either cool or warm humidity and CFM. RUVIS was then utilized to detect and capture friction ridge detail after each treatment step. Improvements in RUVIS detection between treatments were evaluated based on four response factors: minutiae count, percent print recovery, ridge thickness and contrast. By measuring these factors, each latent print photograph was able to be converted to quantifiable data to facilitate statistical analysis of potential differences or improvements between treatments.
The results demonstrate that the application of 80% relative humidity successfully
revived aged latent palmprints across all factors. The combined effect of humidity followed v
by CFM treatment and RUVIS detection was greatest for minutiae count and ridge thickness, while percent print recovery and contrast demonstrated more modest improvements when compared to control prints. Additionally, cool temperature treatments outperformed warm temperature treatments across all factors except contrast. The data therefore suggest that to achieve print rejuvenation and overall improvements in RUVIS detection, combined cool humidity and CFM is more effective than humidity alone. The data also indicate a potential correlation between temperature treatments and latent print age. Warm humidity combined with CFM appeared to best enhance RUVIS images on fresher prints of a few days to one week old, while cool humidity and CFM appeared to maximally enhance RUVIS images on prints of several weeks old.

Teachers' Perceptions About Addressing Literacy for Students With Vision ImpairmentWashington, Samantha 01 January 2017 (has links)
Regular education teachers are sometimes at a disadvantage when required to instruct learners with a visual impairment or other special needs in the classroom. A problem exists with reduced support and training for regular education teachers responsible for meeting literacy needs of students with visual impairment. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive case study was to explore regular education instructors' perceptions of their self-efficacy and ability to modify literature for learners with visual impairment. The research questions targeted this purpose, specifically in the areas of training opportunities and technology use. The social cognitive theory, a model emphasizing learning occurring through social contexts and observations, was used as the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected from 1-on-1 interviews with 10 volunteer regular education teachers teaching students at the elementary level. The resulting data were analyzed via color-coding transcripts, NVivo running word-frequency queries, and manual review of each transcript. The results revealed the participants did not have training, awareness for the literacy needs of students with visual impairment, or knowledge of the different types of technology used to access and create literacy materials. Although they lacked training and current knowledge of providing literacy instruction, the participants expressed confidence in their ability to research, collaborate, and gain the knowledge needed to effectively do so. The implications for positive social change include implementation of training and/or an education cycle for more efficient instruction when serving a student with visual impairment in the local school district. Efficient instruction can facilitate an improvement in the academic performance of students with visual impairment.

Determining the effectiveness of health communication in the Gauteng province : a case study of child immunisation in the Vaal Region.Matsoso, Lebohang Mampone Lesego 28 February 2019 (has links)
M. Tech. (Public Relations Management, Faculty of Human Sciences), Vaal University of Technology / Health communication has become an integral component of quality health care. However, it is not just the process of giving information, but rather an active process that facilitates the use of information to improve decision-making and change behaviour that lead to positive health outcomes. Therefore, effective communication should be encouraged by means of two-way interaction between the health practitioners and the patients.
The purpose of this research study was to determine the effectiveness of health communication in the Vaal region, using Levai Mbatha clinic as a case study. The study used the mixed method design consisting of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Quantitative research design was done through the distribution of questionnaires to parents in order to ascertain how child immunisation issues are communicated to them. Simple random sampling approach was used to gather the data, and the sample size for this design was 100 parents. For the qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews was used to determine the effectiveness of health communication information as disseminated by health practitioners to parents. Purposive sampling approach was used to select six (6) health practitioners.
From the descriptive results (quantitative) it was evident that there is ineffective health communication at Levai Mbatha clinic. Parents are not aware of other illnesses related to child immunisation, and they feel that it would be better if the content of communication mediums were to be written in their mother tongue. It is therefore evident that, due to lack of understanding of the content, parents cannot participate in the discussions related to child immunisation this hinders effective communication.
The interviews (quantitative) revealed that health practitioners felt that much needs to be done when it comes to the dissemination of child immunisation information. They indicate that there is not enough health communication material at their disposal to distribute to parents. Furthermore, there seem to be a challenge in language when they have to communicate with parents. Consequently, the efforts to effectively communicate child immunisation to parents effectively becomes insignificant.
