An investigation into enabling industrial machine tools as traceable measurement systemsVerma, Mayank January 2016 (has links)
On-machine inspection (OMI) via on-machine probing (OMP) is a technology that has the potential to provide a step change in the manufacturing of high precision products. Bringing product inspection closer to the machining process is very attractive proposition for many manufacturers who demand ever better quality, process control and efficiency from their manufacturing systems. However, there is a shortness of understanding, experience, and knowledge with regards to efficiently implementing OMI on industrially-based multi-axis machine tools. Coupled with the risks associated to this disruptive technology, these are major obstacles preventing OMI from being confidently adopted in many high precision manufacturing environments. The research pursued in this thesis investigates the concept of enabling high precision machine tools as measurement devices and focuses upon the question of: “How can traceable on-machine inspection be enabled and sustained in an industrial environment?” As highlighted by the literature and state-of-the-art review, much research and development focuses on the technology surrounding particular aspects of machine tool metrology and measurement whether this is theory, hardware, software, or simulation. Little research has been performed in terms of confirming the viability of industrial OMI and the systematic and holistic application of existing and new technology to enable optimal intervention. This EngD research has contributed towards the use of industrial machine tools as traceable measurement systems. Through the test cases performed, the novel concepts proposed, and solutions tested, a series of fundamental questions have been addressed. Thus, providing new knowledge and use to future researchers, engineers, consultants and manufacturing professionals.

Diferenciais da saúde em áreas urbanas e rurais: cárie dentária e condições gengivais em escolares no Estado de São Paulo / Health differentials in rural and urban areas: prevalence of dental caries and gingival status in the State of São PauloMello, Tatiana Ribeiro de Campos 29 September 2006 (has links)
Conclusões: Os escolares de área rural mostraram-se mais vulneráveis para todas as condições de saúde bucal avaliadas / Objectives: To assess differentials of prevalence of dental caries and gingival status in schoolchildren from rural and urban areas of the State of São Paulo. Material and Methods: The study population comprised schoolchildren aged 5 to 7 and 10 to 12 years old; the source of information was the Survey of Oral Health Status State of São Paulo, 1998". The prevalence of dental caries (dmft and DMFT indices), gingival bleeding on probing and dental calculus (CPI index) were assessed for the appraisal of association with socio-demographic characteristics of schoolchildren and indices of social development of participating towns. The estimation of adjusted and non-adjusted odds ratios used logistic regression analysis, and the fitting of multivariate multilevel models. The study of prevalence differentials among regions of the State used a previous classification of homogeneous rural areas. Results: Indices of oral health had an unequal distribution among strata, indicating a poorer profile for rural population. Studying in rural areas, in public schools, being black and being a boy associated with the odds of presenting untreated dental caries and gingival status at the individual level. Fluoride addition to tap water and the human development index associated with these outcomes at the town level. Rural areas whose productive system presented enhancements associated with the agro-industry had an improved profile of oral health. Conclusion: Schoolchildren in rural areas had a poorer profile for all outcomes of oral health. These findings should instruct health services for programming specific interventions aimed at this stratum.

Descrição da comunidade microbiana associada à rizosfera de cana-de-açúcar / Description of Microbial Community in the Rhizosphere of SugarcaneDiogo Paes da Costa 24 January 2013 (has links)
The sugarcane is an important crop in Brazilian agrarian context, especially in respect to maintenance and sustainability of agroecosystems and soil biodiversity. Couplage Planification et Ordonnancement: Approche hiérarchique et décompositionGuyon, Olivier 19 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)

In-situ TEM Probing of NanomaterialsHummelgård, Magnus January 2009 (has links)
Nanomaterials because of their small size, may have special properties unlikely to be seen in ordinary types of materials. Nanomaterials like nanotubes, nanowires and nanoparticles are best studied at the nanoscale, vital but also problematic. In this thesis we use a transmission electron microscope (TEM)combined with a scanning tunneling microscope probe. This system allows TEM images to be captured and recorded into a movie together with recordedelectrical data for real time analysis. Using this method we found that the electrical conductivity of molybdenumbased nanowires Mo6S3I6 can be improved by current induced transformation. This might be a general method of improving nanowires which is of high valueif the wires are to be used in electrical circuits or field emission devices. The bending modulus for these nanowires were also determined, by an electromechanical resonance method, to 4.9 GPa. The sintering phase of silver nanoparticles, used in electrical conductive ink for printing electrical circuits, were studied by the in-situ TEM probing method. We observed that percolation path ways are formed and that the dispersive agent of the particles can be pyrolysed into a net of carbon with characteristics similar to graphite. We also developed a method for decorating nanowires and nanotubes with gold nanoparticles. Nanowire particle composites are often used in assembling more complex devices (electronic circuits) or for linking to organic molecules (biosensor applications) and existing particle decoration methods are either difficult or with low yield. By in situ TEM probing we found that carbon nanocages can be grown onto these gold nanoparticles. The size of the gold nanoparticles is controllable an thus the size of the nanocages. These nanocages may be used in medicine- or hydrogen storage-applications. Mo6S3I6 nanotrådar studerades med in situ TEM probing. / The thesis covers six scientific papers

Home networks are evolving vigorously and are also becoming more and more heterogeneous and complex. Home networks contain new services and numerous devices with wired and wireless links. At the same time, users demand high levels of quality of service for many new applications. Hence, the supervision of links quality tends to be mandatory in emergent home networks, to trigger QoS mechanisms. In this context, this dissertation proposes the utilization of the available bandwidth as a performance indicator in hybrid home networks (e.g. for remote service-evaluation, diagnosis and fault detection) and as link-state metric for a number of QoS mechanisms (e.g., admission control, path selection and load balancing). In this dissertation, we firstly explain why available bandwidth probing is a fundamental tool in the new QoS architectures for hybrid home networks and we explore different use cases. We investigate the networking constraints that affect bandwidth probing in hybrid home networks. We explain why most tools to measure available bandwidth on Internet paths are not very efficient on home networks. We make a taxonomic study of a number of state-of-the-art probing techniques and probing tools for available bandwidth. At that aim, we propose a functional framework, called Metrics Profile Capture Filter and Feedback (MPCFF). Based on these studies, we choose Iperf in TCP mode as an attractive tool to estimate available bandwidth. Then, we conduct a performance evaluation on an experimental test bed, to compare Iperf in lightweight TCP-mode vs. various state-of-the-art tools (Wbest, Pathchirp, Pathload and IGI/PTR). We show that Iperf in lightweight TCP mode is superior in terms of accuracy and speed of convergence. Finally, we integrate Iperf in lightweight TCP mode into a path selection protocol using the Inter-MAC software (developed in the Omega European project). We show, on a test bed, how Iperf in lightweight TCP mode enhances the Inter-MAC path selection by eliminating performance deterioration due to time-varying capacity links. Our results show that Iperf in lightweight TCP mode, accurately, triggers path selection and load balancing mechanisms, to adapt the network resources to the strong degradation of WiFi and PLC links. Available bandwidth probing detects and helps to control real-time deviations of the quality of experience, associated of sensitive applications. At the same time, available-bandwidth probing helps the service provider to isolate failures and to monitor the end-to-end residential service, on demand or on long-term periodicity basis.

Development of a micro-milling force model and subsystems for miniature Machine Tools (mMTs)Goo, Chan-Seo 29 July 2011 (has links)
Nowadays, the need for three-dimensional miniaturized components is increasing in many areas, such as electronics, biomedics, aerospace and defence, etc. To support the demands, various micro-scale fabrication techniques have been further introduced and developed over the last decades, including micro-electric-mechanical technologies (MEMS and LIGA), laser ablation, and miniature machine tools (mMTs). Each of these techniques has its own benefits, however miniature machine tools are superior to any others in enabling three-dimensional complex geometry with high relative accuracy, and the capability of dealing with a wide range of mechanical materials. Thus, mMTs are emerging as a promising fabrication process. In this work, various researches have been carried out based on the mMTs. The thesis presents micro-machining, in particular, micro-milling force model and three relevant subsystems for miniature machine tools (mMTs), to enhance machining productivity/efficiency and dimensional accuracy of machined parts.
The comprehensive force model that predicts micro-endmilling dynamics has been developed. Unlike conventional macro-machining, the cutting mechanism in micro-machining is complex with high level of non-linearity due to the combined effects of edge radius, size, and minimum chip thickness effect, etc., resulting in no chip formation when the chip thickness is below the minimum chip forming thickness. Instead, part of the work material deforms plastically under the edge of a tool and the rest of the material recovers elastically. The developed force model for micro-endmilling is effective to understand the micro-machining process. As a result, the micro-endmilling force model is helpful to improve the quality of machined parts. In addition, three relevant subsystems which deliver maximum machining productivity and efficiency are also introduced. Firstly, ultrasonic atomization-based cutting fluid application system is introduced. During machining, cutting fluid is required at the cutting zone for cooling and lubricating the cutting tool against the workpiece. Improper cutting fluid application leads to significantly increased tool wear, and which results in overall poor machined parts quality. For the micro-machining, conventional cooling methods using high pressure cutting fluid is not viable due to the potential damage and deflection of weak micro-cutting tools. The new atomization-based cutting fluids application technique has been proven to be quite effective in machinability due to its high level of cooling and lubricating.
Secondly, an acoustic emission (AE)-based tool tip positioning method is introduced. Tool tip setting is one of the most important factors to be considered in the CNC machine tool. Since several tools with different geometries are employed during machining, overall dimensional accuracy of the machined parts are determined by accurate coordinates of each tool tip. In particular, tool setting is more important due to micro-scale involved in micro-machining. The newly developed system for tool tip positioning determines the accurate coordinates of the tool tip through simple and easy manipulation. At last, with the advance of the 3D micro-fabrication technologies, the machinable miniaturized components are getting complex in geometry, leading to increased demand on dimensional quality control. However, the system development for micro-scale parts is slow and difficult due to complicated detection devices, algorithm, and fabrication of a micro-probe. Consequently, the entire dimensional probing system tends to become bulky and expensive. A new AE-based probing system with a wire-based probe was developed to address this issue with reduced cost and size, and ease of application. / Graduate

Between CPT-probing and CRS-Testing with Respect to Deformation PropertiesTaloyan, Zoran January 2018 (has links)
Deformation modules explains how a material or an area behave or deform when different amount of stresses act on it. CRS-testing, which compresses samples with a constant deformation rate, gives us modules like M0 and ML, with the help of routine examinations. CPT-probing, on the other hand, penetrate a conical tip through stratigraphy and gives us the elasticity module. These methods are very different in many ways, like what parameters, modules, deformation groups and use, are given. CRS-testing is conducted in a laboratory, with samples taken from specific depths, while CPT-probing is conducted in the field, with information about the whole stratigraphy is given. To directly compare these two methods modules are not possible. Due to CONRAD that evaluates and present CPT-probing results, does not evaluate elasticity modules for clay, but only for frictional soils. They complement each other very well due to in areas like Uppsala, which has a great depth of clay, shows with CRS-testing that clay is present but when CPT starts to register elasticity modules, shows that we moved in to frictional soil. With this, deformation properties can be shown for the whole stratigraphy in a drill point. Drill points from Kronåsen and Kungsängen in Uppsala municipality, and in Fyrklövern from Upplands Väsby municipality has been evaluated with respect to deformation properties and the results shows great differences in the deformation modules between themselves.
