Pohled na problematiku sexuálně přenosných nemocí u pomáhajících profesí / View of sexually transmitted diseases in case of assisting professions

STŘÍTESKÁ, Lucie January 2011 (has links)
Name of the dissertation is:``View of sexually transmitted diseases in case of assisting professions``. I decided to deal with sexually transmitted diseases because the number of these diseases is relatively high and numbers of newly ill people keep increasing. This opinion is confirmed by the fact that, for example, number of HIV positive individuals in the Czech Republic slightly exceeded 100 in the year 1990 whereas the number HIV positive individuals was 1,344 in the year 2009, i.e. 19 years later. Considering also the fact that this disease is an incurable one and treatment of this disease is demanding on the ill people from thein mental as well as physical aspekt and considering also the total effect for society, it is very important indeed to pay attention on this issue. Theoretical part divides sexually transmitted diseases according the often used division in classic generál diseases. They include inguinal granuloma, gonorrhoea, soft chancre, syphilis and venereal lymphogranuloma. Another diseases which include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genital herpes, infections caused by the virus Human papillom, scabies or pubic louses were dealt with only marginally. The last chapter is focused on assisting professions. The goal of the work was to look at the issue from the point of view of assisting professions staff. To find out whether they are interested in the issue, what is their awareness, etc. This goal has been met. Conversations, for example, revealed that employees who are in everyday contact with people who live risky way of living (drug addicts, homeless people, etc.) are better aware of issue concering sexually transmitted diseases than respondents who work with children or seniors. None of the respondents underwent any additional training in this issue. The selected methodology was represented by quality research and the selected method was represented by partially controlled interview with six selected representatives from assisting professions. The overall knowledge will be used not only to find out but also the to complete or correct information on the issue for employees in assisting professions. Information on the issue can be further disseminated among clients via these professionals within primary prevention.

Medical Imaging Field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Identification of Specialities Within the Field

Grey, Michael L. 01 December 2009 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine if specialty areas are emerging in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) profession due to advancements made in the medical sciences, imaging technology, and clinical applications used in MRI that would require new developments in education/training programs and national registry examinations. In this exploratory study, statistical analysis incorporated the use of factor analysis and chi square. Factor analysis was used to group tasks performed by MRI technologists into factors to better identify emerging specialty areas within the MRI profession. Chi square was used to analyze the association between the tasks performed in (a) the employment setting, and (b) hospital size. Factor analysis identified four meaningful factors. The four named factors were: (a) Routine Imaging non-Central Nervous System Imaging; (b) Advanced Imaging; (c) Routine Imaging with Central Nervous System Imaging; and (d) Musculoskeletal and Spine Imaging. From the four named factors, three emerging specialty areas were identified: (a) central nervous system imaging; (b) vascular/cardiovascular imaging; and (c) musculoskeletal imaging. Chi square analysis identified 47 of the 78 tasks as being significant when finding an association between the employment setting and the frequency of tasks performed. Cramer's V was used to measure the strength of their association. The more complicated the procedure the more likely this procedure is performed in either a university or private hospital. Further, chi square analysis identified 42 of the 78 tasks as being significant when finding the association between the hospital size and the frequency of tasks performed. Gamma was used to measure the strength of their association. This means the larger the hospital, the more frequent the tasks were performed.

Performance in credential enhancing masters program facilitates future success in the health professions

Abbas, Majed 17 June 2016 (has links)
This paper examined the critical factors and potential predictors necessary for successful admission to dental school for students participating in the credential enhancing Oral Health Sciences (OHS) master’s program at Boston University. The academic parameters of OHS-DMD and traditional (four year) college graduate DMD students were compared to determine if OHS graduates performed at a comparable academic level in dental school as DMD students who entered dental school without completing a credential enhancing master’s program. To accomplish this, we examined data from students who matriculated to the Oral Health Sciences program from 2006 to 2015 and collected demographic, undergraduate grade point average (GPA), dental admissions test (DAT) scores and Oral Health Sciences GPA from Admissions and Registrar records for our analyses. To compare dental school performance and success on national board exams we obtained data for both OHS-DMD and traditional DMD students who enter the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. We performed unpaired T-tests to evaluate differences in undergraduate GPA, DAT and OHS GPA data for those OHS students matriculating to any dental school to determine what criteria, if any, can be used to predict success. We found that two factors were significant in determining acceptance to dental school: the Oral Health Sciences GPA (3.501 ± 0.301 vs 2.914 ± 0.336, p <0.0001*) and DAT scores (18.380 ± 2.089 vs 17.231 ± 1.833, p= 0.0365*). Comparison of academic performance between DMD and OHS-DMD at BU dental school found that students perform equally as well in Year 1 but dropped lower in Year 2 when comparing GPA (3.40 ± 0.052 vs 3.290 ± 0.259*, p=0.043). Lastly, first attempt fail rates on national board examinations (8.3% + 4.78 vs 7.4% + 5.1, p=0.024) between traditional DMD and OHS-DMD students were reduced however retake pass rates were equivalent (p=0.120). These studies demonstrate that both OHS-GPA and DAT scores are significant factors in successful admission to dental school for those who had been unable to gain acceptance without the credential enhancing master’s program. Additionally, students performing well in the Oral Health Sciences program matriculate to dental school and are nearly as successful academically and on board exams as traditional four-year students DMD. Lastly, in keeping with the original mission of the OHS program, we have been largely successful in allowing underachieving and/or underrepresented minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students to gain acceptance dental school.

The consequences of formal study abroad programs on Thai medical doctors: a literature review and research

Chanchamsang, Uravadee 23 November 2016 (has links)
Many Thai scholars are skeptical that Thai medical doctors can utilize knowledge and skills in Thailand from experience acquired when they study abroad, due to cultural differences, including a hierarchical culture that places importance on seniority and can prevent medical doctors seeking to actualize those new skills when they return to work in Thailand. Despite growing interest in and study of globalization, there are few existing studies that explore the relationship between social and individual consequences of formal study abroad programs. Nor are there many studies that apply sociological theory on the professions to less developed countries, or that focus on the relationship between power and culture in medical education in Thailand. This thesis will explore these topics by first reviewing and discussing three main bodies of sociological literature on medical professionalization, educational institutions, and study abroad. Given the gaps in the literature, it proposes a comparative study that relies on in-depth interviews with two groups of Thai medical doctors: those who have studied abroad and those who have not. The comparative design will allow the researcher to gain leverage on the consequences of study abroad to individual career trajectories, as well as the broader healthcare system, and contributes to the building of new sociological theory. Despite the many challenges that Thai doctors who go abroad face in adapting and actualizing new skills, I hypothesize that study abroad alters Thailand’s social hierarchy through the creation of a new class of “international doctors,” endowed with new skills, knowledge and cultural capital. While the benefits of belonging to this elite class may not be manifested immediately, due to the seniority system, they become apparent over time.

Supervize v pomáhajících profesích / Supervision in the Helping Professions

AUBRECHTOVÁ, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
In Czech literature, supervision is usually referred to as inspection or overview. Certain authors claim that supervision would not be supervision without either of them. Supervision provides an overview, which is important in solving occupational issues and monitoring the workers' quality and professionalism. The theoretical section explains the basic terms that are related to the title of the essay. It explains the word supervision, auxiliary professions, supervision and its forms, objectives, methods and a supervision contract. The text also specifies who can submit supervision, which criteria the supervisor must fulfil and the relation between the supervisor and the supervised. The essay determines supervising methods (and techniques) used in selected institutions and reveals whether and how the supervisor allows for typology of the clients with whom the institution works. It also ascertains how the supervised persons perceive the supervisors. I specified three research issues: 1. What does supervision give to the supervised? 2. Do the supervisors apply different supervising methods according to the client's typology? 3. Does the supervisor heed typology of clients that are a target group of the given institution? In the practical section of the essay, I applied a form of qualitative research with regard to the specified objectives. For collection of data, I used a research method based on queries and an associated research method of semi-structured interviews. I appended the queries with an observation method. Eighteen persons participated in the interviews. Fifteen of the supervised persons came from three different institutions (a Charity Home for Mothers with Children, a Nursing Home in Havlíčkův Brod and an Institute of Social Care in Zboží) and three persons were supervisors, one from each institution. The essay may help to improve knowledge of persons with auxiliary professions on the supervision and facilitate supervision in various institutions with regard to the clients' typologies.

ARQUIVISTAS: UMA ANÁLISE SOB O VIÉS DA SOCIOLOGIA DAS PROFISSÕES / ARCHIVISTS: AN ANALYSIS UNDER THE BIAS OF SOCIOLOGY OF THE PROFESSIONS

Mintegui, Evelin Melo 11 August 2014 (has links)
This study sought to understand the profession of archivist's point of view of the sociology of professions. From a literature review on the topic of the professions, the concept of field of Pierre Bourdieu was critical to design the research object. So, looking up the field of archival science and profession, postings were collected on social networks from archivists in relation to his profession, as well as interviews with some individuals were performed. The documentary survey was also necessary to characterize the profession and its history in the country (Brazil). During the data analysis it was found that there was no possibility of designing the archival field, since this concept requires a certain independence. Once considered the field of information science, we chose the contemporary informative documentary field as a reference to locate archivistics (archival science) and the profession of archivist, competing with other areas of knowledge and professions which also take the files as its objects (historians, librarians). The analysis revealed strategies to strengthen both the knowledge area as the profession.
