The professionalisation of Australian catholic social welfare, 1920-1985Gleeson, Damian John, School of History, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
This thesis explores the neglected history of Australian Catholic social welfare, focusing on the period, 1920-85. Central to this study is a comparative analysis of diocesan welfare bureaux (Centacare), especially the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide agencies. Starting with the origins of professional welfare at local levels, this thesis shows the growth in Catholic welfare services across Australia. The significant transition from voluntary to professional Catholic welfare in Australia is a key theme. Lay trained women inspired the transformation in the church???s welfare services. Prepared predominantly by their American training, these women devoted their lives to fostering social work in the Church and within the broader community. The women demonstrated vision and tenacity in introducing new policies and practices across the disparate and unco-ordinated Australian Catholic welfare sector. Their determination challenged the status quo, especially the church???s preference for institutionalisation of children, though they packaged their reforms with compassion and pragmatism. Trained social workers offered specialised guidance though such efforts were often not appreciated before the 1960s. New approaches to welfare and the co-ordination of services attracted varying degrees of resistance and opposition from traditional Catholic charity providers: religious orders and the voluntary-based St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP). For much of the period under review diocesan bureaux experienced close scrutiny from their ordinaries (bishops), regular financial difficulties, and competition from other church-based charities for status and funding. Following the lead of lay women, clerics such as Bishop Algy Thomas, Monsignor Frank McCosker and Fr Peter Phibbs (Sydney); Bishop Eric Perkins (Melbourne), Frs Terry Holland and Luke Roberts (Adelaide), consolidated Catholic social welfare. For four decades an unprecedented Sydney-Melbourne partnership between McCosker and Perkins had a major impact on Catholic social policy, through peak bodies such as the National Catholic Welfare Committee and its successor the Australian Catholic Social Welfare Commission. The intersection between church and state is examined in terms of welfare policies and state aid for service delivery. Peak bodies secured state aid for the church???s welfare agencies, which, given insufficient church funding proved crucial by the mid 1980s. Read more

Continuing professional development in medicine : the inherent values of the system for quality assurance in health careMpuntsha, Loyiso F. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The practice of medicine has always been a big area of interest as a
profession. The focus ranges depending on issues at hand - it may
be on the educational, training, humanistic, economic, professional
ethics and legal aspects.
One area of medicine that is under the spotlight around the world is
that of the maintenance of clinical competency, followed very
closely and almost linked to professional ethics. This study follows
the introduction of a system of Continuing Professional
Development (hereinafter also referred to as CPD), in South Africa
and an overview of how it has been introduced in a few other
countries. The main areas of focus being the extrication of inherent
values of CPD, relating this aspect to quality improvement in
medical health care.
The medical profession as well as most of the interested parties, has
different perspectives regarding the fact that the system is regulated
through legislation. There is also the doubt whether the CPD system
will be effective in achieving the goals that it has been set to
achieve. Although a system of Continuing Medical Education has
been a tradition in all countries, which implies that the CPD system
is not totally new as far as the educational principles are concerned,
the values accruable need to be exploited. It is the possible success
of this kind of evaluations that may foster more understanding of
the inherent values in this CPD system.
verweef is.
Voortgesette Professionele Ontwikkeling (hierna verwys na as VPO)
ander lande ingestel is.
vooropgestelde doelwitte sal slaag.
Read more

Previous issue date: 2010-04-28 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / I analyze the articulation process existing between the juridical knowledge internationalization, represented here by restorative justice, and local professional networks in two cities from the state of São Paulo: São Carlos and São Caetano do Sul. In the first city it was observed a interest decay in restorative justice with a local configuration of disputes towards the minor with problems against the law. Then, the second city is constituted as one of the three areas in this country in which was established a pilot program of mediation in the shapes of the kind of informal resolution of conflicts indicated here. Based on a bibliography on sociology of professions, it is discussed how this proposal, with a more political content, has been treated more specifically in the field of law professions, assuming that these professions, unique in their historical tradition and strong connection with the State, have taken the knowledge neutrality and strong delimitation with political field as the best strategy for the construction of their autonomy. Příznaky syndromu vyhoření u pracovníků přímé obslužné péče / Symptoms of burnout among staff of direct service careZICHOVÁ, Eliška January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation was focused on burnout syndrome among the staff of direct service care. The degree of burnout was estimated using Copenhagen Burnout Inventory questionnaire which was completed by the respondents from six Prague homes for seniors. The burnout incidence in this group was 30-45 %, whereas it was only 18-32 % among Czech Army employees who were studied for comparison. The staff of direct service care had significantly higher degree of personal, work-related, client-related and total burnout than army employees. Further aim was to verify whether supervision leads to lowered incidence of burnout symptoms. However, this study did not reveal any improvement of burnout degree in homes for seniors in which supervision was installed. When searching for most frequent reasons of profession change among the staff of direct service care, it was demonstrated that respondents with higher burnout degree were looking especially for less stressing work. Practice length was only of borderline importance for the severity of burnout syndrome, while age or education had no significant influence on this syndrome among the staff of direct service care. In conclusion, this study confirmed the importance of respondent relation to their job, which was inversely proportional to their burnout degree. The respondents looking for less stressing work had higher degree of burnout than those who searched for other qualities of their future job. This important difference was demonstrated in all groups examined. On the contrary, those who found their realization in their work were less burned out than those who did not consider work as their mission. These findings are in agreement with the idea that the pronounced job engagement represents a definite protection against work exhaustion and burnout. Read more

of mentoring is investigated, a few characteristics of mentoring which have
stood the test of time are discussed and prevailing practices promoting
mentoring are compared with those of bygone eras.
A diverse variety of approaches to mentoring are presented: in addition to the
views of contemporary behavioural psychologists, vocationalists, educationists
and teaching specialists, the classic interpretation of mentoring (as
presented in the Odyssey and the Les Adventures de Telemaque (the works of
Homer and Fenelon respectively) is also considered.
In the last section a number of conclusions and recommendations are made
regarding the aims, nature, characteristics and value of mentoring, factors
affecting the outcome of mentoring and the skills and personal characteristics
of mentors. The recommendations include guidelines for the effective handling
of problematic issues regarding mentoring, such as the pragmatization and
formalization thereof. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Educational Studies) Read more

The role and position of women in Roman North African societyDe Marre, Martine Elizabeth Agnès 11 1900 (has links)
In this thesis I have endeavoured to throw light on both the private and public aspect of the lives of women living in the Roman African provinces from the first century BC to the seventh century AD. Funerary
inscriptions reveal that the role of women in private life was projected in a manner which reflected the ideals for Roman womanhood (pudicitia, castitas, fides and fecunditas), even when they clearly came of Afro-Punic stock. In terms of the quality of their lives Roman African women of the propertied status groups (about whom we know the most) had a good standard of living compared to other parts of the Roman Empire, and for example were well-educated in the urbanized areas compared to provinces such as Gaul. Roman African women of the elite also enjoyed a degree of autonomy enhanced by the increased financial independence granted to them in terms of Roman law, which enabled them to function as benefactors in their communities in the same way as their male counterparts, donating money for temples, baths and markets. In return for this they were duly
recognized in honorary inscriptions by their communities. Although this public role may appear to be in conflict with the 'ideal' domestic or private role of the Roman matron, this activity was sanctioned by the fact that they were acting in the interests of male family members who were engaged in municipal careers. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries there are a few signs that women were beginning to act more in their own interests, but much of their public role faded with the increasing dominance of the Christian Church which prescribed a more limited role for women. The only exceptions occurred in the times of persecution through the temporary prominence gained
by women as martyrs and confessors, although this prominence cannot be said to have advantaged women in general. During the Vandal and Byzantine period we know of only a few women, primarily those with connections to the elite at Rome and Constantinople, who acted with the independence and authority of their
class. / D.Litt. et Phil. (Ancient History / Ancient and Near Eastern Studies Read more

Prosociální rysy u pracovníků pomáhajících profesí / The Pro-social Traits of Workers in Helping ProfessionsFENDRICHOVÁ, Bohdana January 2009 (has links)
In the thesis on the pro-social traits of workers in helping (assistance-providing) professions I dedicate myself to pro-social behavior, empathy and the basic characteristics of personality issuing from the five-factor personality model {--} The Big Five. Most professionals agree that pro-social behavior and empathy belong among the basic characteristics that assistance-providing professionals should have. An important role is also the personality of the care provider. The listed constructs and connections among them however remain the home environment of empirical research and thereby represent the phenomena regarding which there exist few verified findings. The goal of the paper rests in fining the level of empathy and personal dispositions in accordance with the Big Five model that could influence pro-social behavior in selected groups of assistance-giving professionals. The factors in question are neuroticism, extroversion, and openness to experience, graciousness and conscientiousness. Data collection took place with the help of two psychodiagnostic questionnaires. The IRI questionnaire measures level of empathy and the NEO-FFI questionnaire was used for diagnosing the five personality dimensions. The study was quantitative. The monitored set included respondents from three assistance-giving professions {--} nurses, members of the Czech Republic Fire Rescue Corps, and elementary-school teachers. The results confirmed the hypothesis that care providing workers show higher levels of empathy in comparison to the population average, and the hypothesis that these professionals show a higher level of personality traits that, in an interpersonal context, display positive orientation towards others, that is that they are more extroverted and gracious in comparison with the population average, was refuted. These results make it possible to consider that the relationship between the basic personality dimensions and pro-social tendencies may be mediated by the level of empathy with regard to other psychological constructs and the results of social learning. Conclusions cannot be generalized, due to a relatively small sample group. For this purpose it would be interesting to carry out a professional study, which would exceed, in its scope and possibilities, the usual requirements of a thesis paper. Read more
