Prophecy and Group Identity and Purpose: Connecting the Leadership Conference of the Women Religious with the Catholic Legacy of Feminist PoliticsFischer, Larry M 01 May 2013 (has links) (PDF)
While the Second Vatican Council advocates an inclusive priesthood and unified People of God, exclusion of consecrated Roman Catholic women from ministerial priesthood, official church interpretations of the scriptures, and judgments concerning faith and morals continues. This thesis examines creative tactics of resistance among consecrated women on account of hierarchal and essentialist models found in church traditions, including Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), and contemporary American women associated with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. I analyze aspects of three prophetic critiques and hermeneutical tactics of each, appealing to the critical interpretive methodologies of Elizabeth Bucar and Grace Jantzen. The LCWR are “in good company,” contrary to the representations of male superiors in the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and episcopal hierarchy. The feminist resistance of these women recapitulates forms of what Bucar calls “creative conformity,” which the church has embraced for its forbearers.

RECONCILING ISLAM AND PHILOSOPHY IN THE VIRTUOUS CITY: REREADING AL-FARABI'S AL-MADINAH AL-FADILAH WITHIN 10TH-CENTURY ISLAMIC THOUGHTNigro, Justin January 2017 (has links)
In his tenth-century work, al-Madīnah al-Fāḍilah, the Muslim philosopher Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī posits a solution to the internecine hostilities between Muslim intellectual communities which occurred as a result of conflicting positions on the relationship between revelation and reason, religion and philosophy. In this work al-Fārābī demonstrates that both religion and philosophy are derived from, and dependent upon, divine revelation from Allah to the Prophet. Modern scholars of al-Fārābī interpret his work differently, reading him as an enemy of religion who subordinates Islam to philosophy. In this thesis, after establishing al-Fārābī within the historical and ideological context of tenth-century Islamic thought I analyze al-Madīnah al-Fāḍilah in light of a commentary on the text by Richard Walzer, who is among those scholars who read al-Fārābī as an enemy of Islam who merely reproduces Greek philosophy in Arabic. Contrasting the original Arabic text with Walzer’s English translation and commentary I apply readings of several of al-Fārābī’s other works as an interpretive lens, through which the correct reading of al-Madīnah al-Fāḍilah is made clear. I further analyze the text in light of Islamic Scripture, by which I demonstrate that the foundation on which al-Fārābī’s cosmology is founded has precedence within the Qur’ān. Working in the tenth century al-Fārābī sought to reconcile the conflicting views of his fellow Muslims, in order to bring peace to the community, the Muslim Ummah. Al-Madīnah al-Fāḍilah should be regarded as his crowning achievement in these efforts. / Religion

Alexander the Great : anointed with lightingJahosky, Michael T. 01 January 2008 (has links)
Alexander the Great represents the pinnacle of mortal achievement. There are many histories, novels, and even self-help books written on Alexander, though very few discuss in detail exactly who this enigmatic youth was. Tragically, many historians deny the possibility of understanding the intricacies of Alexander's complex personality. This thesis espouses that Alexander can be studied as a human-being brimming over with wisdom and accomplishment. The research conducted for this thesis has involved combing the ancient authors whom Alexander read and was influenced by in order to fully represent Alexander as a deeply emulative hero. The portrait of Alexander that readers will find below is both deeply historical and fascinatingly mythical, for he lived in both worlds. Alexander believed in a prophecy uttered by Prometheus which foretold of a weapon that would "best the thunderbolt" of Zeus; the fulfillment of this prophecy would bring the glory of Alexander's heroic bloodline to a dramatic and powerful conclusion. To reach this goal, Alexander had to rival his ancestors Achilles and Hercules in accomplishment and then excel them in memory. It is the hope that this thesis will paint an original portrait of Alexander which is overflowing with the spirituality, passion, and adventure that characterized the young king.

The so-called Isaiah- “Denkschrift" (6:1-9:6) : an exegetical-historical studyEsterhuizen, Liza 03 1900 (has links)
Theses (MPhil (Ancient Studies. Centre for Bible Interpretation and Translation in Africa))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The so-called Isaiah Denkschrift (Isa 6:1-9:6) is seen by many scholars as the personal
memoirs of the prophet during the time of the Syro-Ephraimitic war. The aim of this
study is to investigate the related issues in this periscope within the framework of the
Denkschrift. The aim of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of prophecy in
the Ancient Near East and to study how this phenomenon manifests in Isa 6:1-9:6.
This study examines the biblical and non- biblical literature relating to this
phenomenon with the objective to gain an understanding of the text and the world
behind the text. The exegetical process of the study also studied the historical
background as it is found in the Denkchrift (Isa 6:1-9:6). The literature investigation
of the study focuses on prophecy as it is found in the Hebrew Bible as well as in
cross-cultural settings such as the West Semitic, Old Babylonian, Neo- Assyrian and
Egypt cultures. It is eminent that in the Ancient Near East prophecy in the different
cultures shows parallels and differences in the manifestation thereof.
Within the corpus of the phenomenon of prophecy in the Ancient Near East, the study
analyses the calling of Isaiah to become a prophet to the people of Judah. Isaiah 6
reports the prophetâ s vision of the heavenly divine council, his purification and the
commission to prevent the repentance of the people and the resolve of Yahweh to
punish them. Another unit within the Denkschrift addresses the symbolic action
behind the naming of Isaiahâ s children within the Syro-Ephraimitic crisis. Chapters
7:3 and 8:1-4 records the circumstances surrounding the symbolism as part of Isaiahâ s
prophecy when he prophecy to king Ahaz. The interlinking relationship between
Isaiah and king Ahaz is visible in the Denkschrift as an issue in the understanding of
Isaiahâ s prophecy and speeches. Chapter 7, 8 and 9 records the tension in the
relationship and the study explores the significance thereof in the pending crisis. The
literature study shows that this relationship can be interpreted in different ways and
the aim is to compare these literary findings. The investigation of Isaiah 6:1-9:6
construe a prophetic message of disaster, judgement and doom but similarly also
presents a message of promises, hope and future expectations. This message is still a
message needed in a modern world today.
