Spiritual meaning and the prophetic mode in T.S. Eliot’s Four quartets

Von Bergen, Megan Kimberly January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of English / Michael L. Donnelly / Among the body of criticism on T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, critics such as Cleo McNelly Kearns and Alireza Farahbakhsh have recently interpreted the poet’s “intolerable wrestle / With words and meanings” (EC II) in light of deconstructionist theory. Although the poetry does recognize the difficulty of speaking about spiritual experience, it does not embrace the resulting linguistic miscommunication. In fact, the poems resist such a move, identifying the spiritual danger of such miscommunication; instead, they seek to overcome these difficulties and accurately communicate spiritual experience – an aim achieved in the context of biblical prophecy. Louis Martz argues that the Quartets are, in fact, not prophetic; however, he defines prophecy in terms of its social interests, rather than in terms of the interest in the human-divine relationship that characterizes both biblical tradition and Eliot’s poetry. I want to argue that reading the Quartets in the context of biblical prophecy, filtered through mystical tradition, explains their ability to transcend linguistic difficulty and explore spiritual experience in human language. In biblical tradition, the prophets overcome linguistic difficulty through a direct encounter with God, which purifies language of error and equips them to speak of divine reality. In Eliot’s Quartets, the poetry undergoes a similar purifying experience meant to replace linguistic error with a meaningful exploration of spiritual experience. For the Quartets, linguistic purification is accomplished by means of the mystical via negativa. Appropriating images associated with the via negativa, the poetry denies language tied to direct perception of spiritual reality and adopts instead a language that conveys such experience through unfamiliar words and images. In that language, the poetry is purified of its errors and made capable of exploring the human relationship with God. A poetry identified with the Incarnation, this solution communicates in human language the reality of spiritual experience. In this communication, the poetry at last explores spiritual experience in a way freed of miscommunication and meaningful for the audience, thereby fulfilling its prophetic aims.

Muhammad : prophet of God

Barthis, Samuel Darryl 30 June 2003 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to capture Muhammad's emergence as Prophet. It starts from the premise that he located himself as a Prophet within a fraternity of prophethood. More specifically he has seen his work as a continuation of the Biblical prophetic tradition. However he has stressed his election as correcting what has been altered in this Biblical tradition. Muhammad: A prophet of God argues that he has as prophet the same defining elements as Biblical prophets; as result we must not criticise him unnecessarily, that is, for the sake of fitting him into our categories. Muhammad must be seen terms of his experiences. In addition we must capture his contribution to humanity. / Religious Studies & Arabic / M.A. (Religious Studies)

Prophetisches Reden und Evangelisation: eine missiologische Untersuchung der über Berlin ausgesprochenen Prophetien (1980-2000) / Prophecy and evangelisation : a missiological study of prophecies regarding Berlin (1980-2000)

Heim, Detlef Peter 31 October 2002 (has links)
Prophecy and evangelisation are central topics of the Bible and instruments of God, Biblical reports show, that mission and evangelisation were mostly possible by a prophetic word (Chapter one). The concern of this study is to analyse the prophecies spoken out for Berlin between the years 1980 to 2000. The prophecies were compared with biblical statements, were proportionate to one another and were analysed regarding their mission-theologicai relevance. A questioning of few leaders of charismatic-embossed churches of Berlin gives the practical part of the study (the theoretical part see chapter two, the results see chapter three). It has to be articulated, that there is no objective judgement for the analysed prophecies. All indications are not bound by time and were given in general sense. All prophecies deal with a spiritual quantum leap, who speaks of an out-pouring of the Spirit of God over Berlin covering the whole area (Chapter four). / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. “On the Cusp of Half-Remembered Prophecies”: Interpreting Prophecy in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire

Loar, Patrice A 10 August 2016 (has links)
The prophecies in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series are unclear and often appear to have multiple possible fulfillments, or none at all. In addition, some of these prophesied events occur before they are introduced, which further contributes to the lack of clarity in interpreting them. My thesis will discuss the methods by which Martin offers readers clues to a prophecy’s fulfillment and argue that Martin’s use of these imprecise prophecies challenges high fantasy tropes about prophecies.

As relações entre cristãos e muçulmanos na Península Ibérica: perspectivas e práticas da igreja ibérica a partir da análise da Crônica Profética de Pseudo-Ezequiel (século IX) / Relations between christians and muslims in the Iberian peninsula: perspectives and practices of the iberian church from the analysis of the Prophetic Chronic by pseudo-Ezekiel (9th century)

Dias, Amanda Pereira 14 October 2010 (has links)
The Church in the region of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages, become a reference to the laic power, as it was for the people. Although it was backed by the Visigothic monarchy, still faced internal problems of dogma and situations resulting from human conflicts. The Arab expansionism brought to the Iberian region a confrontation, as well as civil, religious that threatened and weakened the homogeneous role that Church played in the territory. The coexistence between Muslims and Christians, who were enslaved, made the Church sought answers to the situation experienced at that moment, after the Muslims invasion in the Iberian territory. This dissertation sought to understand the speech prepared for the Church, written by one of its members, who would interpret the situation according to the ecclesiastical perspective. Concurrently, we find structural problems concerning the formation of the Visigothic monarchy, to consider the historical context in which it was produced the document used in this work.

Rocha Filho, Sylvio do Amaral 09 June 2005 (has links)

And this is why there are no law operator but law actors. We will affirm that when the cult of the reason was established, we were taught that the Feeling, activity considered till now like minor, should be censured, omitted, despised, plastered, manacled: but it is worthless, it is always there to accomplish its role and there is no way to ignore it; that because its role was never understood, the Feeling (on the contrary of the Reason) did not grow nor become refined, and that it causes problems to human being. We will try to show that in a conflict there are failures in the communication between the parts; that the feeling is a mean of communication; that in the analysis of the conflict the Feelings that caused rupture, appear; that this communication needs to be re-established; that the Law Actors (the parts, the lawyers, the judges ) show themselves in the Judicial Proceedings supported by their Feelings and that, after all, in the actual judiciary system will prevail as definitive solution the one determined by the feeling of the Judge, and that may, or not , provoke more problems. We will try to defend the position that sentence should not only finish the proceedings, but finish it satisfying both parts and society. We will try to study the question in such a way to become the juridical ambient foreseeable, to proportion to the parts previous knowledge of the real scenery, (which is fixed while not changed), and that they can through this knowledge, plan their lives and assume their risks consciously. We will try, at the end, copying the human system, to propose a judiciary system that learns at first rationally the truth involved, secondly that applies the human intuition in the subject, thirdly that tries to conciliate the parts and reconstruct their communication assigning its proportion of reason considering that in many proceedings both parts have reciprocally errors and discernments to adjust being not totally right nor totally wrong what will not be almost never contemplate by the actual judicial sentence in the actual way of treating the subject and at hindmost, to apply the elaborate and refined Feeling to the judicial decisions in a way to content both parts involved more than the actual system does.

While prophetic charism, a developer of unjust power relations, glossolalia is searched, taking as a tool to interpret those that are proper and related to the exegesis of the concepts of religious studies at the prospect of conflictual analysis. This study is divided into three chapters. At first, it held a bibliography on the topic and presents the basic concepts (symbol, charisma, prophet, conflictual analysis, local social) by which the object of research will be analyzed. On the second chapter has the exegetical analysis of the proposed text to search, giving emphasis to the historical context from which it emerges, the grammatical structures in which it was formatted and the possible interpretations to the glossolalic question. In this chapter, is the conflictual model of analysis of Christian sacred texts, with its emphasis on local social and historic-critical method, which guide this research on power relations in the church at Corinth. The third chapter examines how the glossolalia was elevated to the status symbol of spirituality among the Corinthians, that the deleterious effects of this feature of community life and thought and positioning of the Apostle Paul, before the conflictual situation. Research will define the ideas by which a freeing reading can be presented to readers of this dissertation. Finally, in conclusion, it is the opinion that relates to the phenomenon glossolalic into ideological structure of power and its implications for the current religious situation charismatic.

POW/MIC: Prisoners of Words/Missing in Canon: Liberating the Neglected British War Poets of The Great War.

French, Larry T. 09 May 2009 (has links)
Since the First World War ended in 1918 and anthologies began to emerge, limited attention has been paid to the poets of this era. While a few select male poets have achieved canonicity, women war poets of this era have fallen into enigmatic obscurity. The intention of this paper is to expound, explicate, and expose the difficulties relating to gaining entry into the canon of English literature, especially where the poets of The Great War are concerned. This paper discusses the absence of the most profound and foreshadowing poems written during the war through research of scholarly journals and out-of-print poems. The paper also seeks to prove that the defenses offered up which exclude certain poems in the anthologies have had repercussions extending into the twenty-first century. Beyond all human imagination, the excluded poetry of The Great War is languishing, wanting, and imploring for exploration and canonicity.

Hal Lindsey's The Late, Great Planet Earth and the Rise of Popular Premillennialism in the 1970s

Basham, Cortney S. 01 August 2012 (has links)
How people think about the end of the world greatly affects how they live in the present. This thesis examines how popular American thought about “the end of the world” has been greatly affected by Hal Lindsey’s 1970 popular prophecy book The Late, Great Planet Earth. LGPE sold more copies than any other non-fiction book in the 1970s and greatly aided the mainstreaming of “end-times” ideas like the Antichrist, nuclear holocaust, the Rapture, and various other concepts connected with popular end-times thought. These ideas stem from a specific strain of late-nineteenth century Biblical interpretation known as dispensational premillennialism, which has manifested in various schools of premillennial thought over the last 150 years. However, Lindsey translated this complicated system into modern language and connected it with contemporary geopolitics in powerful ways which helped make LGPE incredibly popular and influential in the 1970s and beyond. This paper includes an introduction to some essential concepts and terms related to popular premillennialism followed by a brief history of popular prophecy in America. The second half of this thesis examines the social, religious, and political climate of the 1970s and how Lindsey’s success connects to the culture of the Seventies, specifically conservative reactions to the various social movements of the 1960s. The last major section discusses Lindsey’s malleable theology and the power of interpreting the Bible “literally.” In the 1970s, conservative theologians and denominations won the battle to define certain concepts within Christianity including terms like “literal,” “inerrant,” and related terms, and Lindsey’s treatment of “the end times” reflects these definitions and how they affect Biblical interpretation. Finally, the conclusion fleshes out the appeal of popular premillennialism in the 1970s and into the present day.
