Do repeated judgments of learning lead to improved memory?

Larsson Sundqvist, Max January 2011 (has links)
Judgments of Learning (JOL) that are made after a delay, instead of immediately after study, are more accurate in terms of predicting later recall (the delayed JOL effect). The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy (SFP) theory explains the delayed JOL effect as the result of a testing effect. In the current study we tested the prediction that performing delayed JOLs leads to a memory improvement. During learning, 79 participants studied Swahili-Swedish word pairs, immediately followed by a cued recall test, and then made either one single or three repeated, spaced JOLs. A final cued recall test was given after either 5 minutes or 1 week. Making repeated JOLs did not increase memory performance compared to the single JOL condition, hence lending no support to the SFP theory. However, making repeated JOLs did improve their relative accuracy, which suggests that the delayed JOL effect mainly concerns memory monitoring and not performance.

Muhammad : prophet of God

Barthis, Samuel Darryl 30 June 2003 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to capture Muhammad's emergence as Prophet. It starts from the premise that he located himself as a Prophet within a fraternity of prophethood. More specifically he has seen his work as a continuation of the Biblical prophetic tradition. However he has stressed his election as correcting what has been altered in this Biblical tradition. Muhammad: A prophet of God argues that he has as prophet the same defining elements as Biblical prophets; as result we must not criticise him unnecessarily, that is, for the sake of fitting him into our categories. Muhammad must be seen terms of his experiences. In addition we must capture his contribution to humanity. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.A. (Religious Studies)

Prophetisches Reden und Evangelisation: eine missiologische Untersuchung der über Berlin ausgesprochenen Prophetien (1980-2000) / Prophecy and evangelisation : a missiological study of prophecies regarding Berlin (1980-2000)

Heim, Detlef Peter 31 October 2002 (has links)
Prophecy and evangelisation are central topics of the Bible and instruments of God, Biblical reports show, that mission and evangelisation were mostly possible by a prophetic word (Chapter one). The concern of this study is to analyse the prophecies spoken out for Berlin between the years 1980 to 2000. The prophecies were compared with biblical statements, were proportionate to one another and were analysed regarding their mission-theologicai relevance. A questioning of few leaders of charismatic-embossed churches of Berlin gives the practical part of the study (the theoretical part see chapter two, the results see chapter three). It has to be articulated, that there is no objective judgement for the analysed prophecies. All indications are not bound by time and were given in general sense. All prophecies deal with a spiritual quantum leap, who speaks of an out-pouring of the Spirit of God over Berlin covering the whole area (Chapter four). / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. A INFLUÊNCIA DAS MULHERES CLÂNICAS NO PENSAMENTO PROFÉTICO DO PÓS-EXÍLIO. UM ESTUDO DE ISAÍAS 57,1-21. / The influence of clan women in prophetic thought post-exile: astudy of Isaias 57.1 to21

A Study of Isaiah 57.1 to 21, we propose a search for fundamentally demonstrate who the three groups of clan women who appear in Isaiah 57.3 to 9, namely: hn+n>[o (sorceress) aEßnm. (Adultery, meaning adulterous - tp,a(nm) and hnAz (prostitute) And so develop that influence had in prophecy, in the post-exilic period To such a task we used two methods: the first, one diachronic method in which the text demonstrated a very negative view of these women, as the backdrop would be established where the text is strong patriarchal influence. But by applying a second, the synchronic and intertextual method, the result showed different because the set of texts which are included, namely: Isa from 56.1 to 12, 58.1 to 14, and from 61.1 to 11, inclusive demonstrate the program Thus, in Isa 56.3-4 - rkªNEh;-!B, (foreign son) and syrIêSh; (eunuchs) are admitted to the community; in Isaiah 58, 1 - bqoß[]y: tybeîl.W (and the house of Jacob), this house represented by a group of men is reprimanded because of fasting; and Isaiah 61.5 to 6 - ~yrIêz (strangers) and rkênE ynEåb.W (and foreign children), they are ones who feed the community. Due to this, there was a chance that a negative view of them could not be accepted within an inclusive project. However the question must be answered. Leave to do a mapping of the clan way of life in Genesis, a set of texts that speak mainly family/ clan. As we study some mythical mothers: Havah, Sarah, Hagar, daughters of Lot and Tamar, and compare them with those of Isaiah 57.3 to 9, many of the characteristics show similar. So we realize that all these women by having clan kingdom animal and plant knowledge, exerted influence on the life and death of families/clans, so they had to be fought by groups of men over time. Yet another important feature in the post-exile, is the movement that families/clans perform, but this exit is always loaded with plenty of fertility and conflict resolution solidarity. We should be in the prophecy, as to crystallize a negative text against a group of women, in fact we are denouncing violence against them.

As relações entre cristãos e muçulmanos na Península Ibérica: perspectivas e práticas da igreja ibérica a partir da análise da Crônica Profética de Pseudo-Ezequiel (século IX) / Relations between christians and muslims in the Iberian peninsula: perspectives and practices of the iberian church from the analysis of the Prophetic Chronic by pseudo-Ezekiel (9th century)

Amanda Pereira Dias 14 October 2010 (has links)
The Church in the region of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages, become a reference to the laic power, as it was for the people. Although it was backed by the Visigothic monarchy, still faced internal problems of dogma and situations resulting from human conflicts. The Arab expansionism brought to the Iberian region a confrontation, as well as civil, religious that threatened and weakened the homogeneous role that Church played in the territory. The coexistence between Muslims and Christians, who were enslaved, made the Church sought answers to the situation experienced at that moment, after the Muslims invasion in the Iberian territory. This dissertation sought to understand the speech prepared for the Church, written by one of its members, who would interpret the situation according to the ecclesiastical perspective. Concurrently, we find structural problems concerning the formation of the Visigothic monarchy, to consider the historical context in which it was produced the document used in this work.

Prophets reading prophecy : the interpretation of the Book of Revelation in the writings of Richard Brothers, Joanna Southcott and William Blake

Downing, Jonathan Philip January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the use and interpretation of Revelation in the writings of the contemporary prophets Richard Brothers, Joanna Southcott and William Blake. Contributing to an emerging scholarly interest in the reception of biblical texts within marginalised interpretative traditions, the thesis offers a detailed exploration of how Revelation is incorporated into these authors' prophetic texts, and how it informs the identity of readers who see their activities as bringing about the fulfilment of the text's visions on the historical plane. This aim is achieved by engaging with extant comparative studies of Brothers, Southcott and Blake within historical and literary studies; a comparison with similar contemporary prophetic figures and the contribution of Revelation to their prophetic self-understandings; and contextualising these figures against contemporary constructions of Revelation as a prophetic text, and the recognition of the poetic nature of biblical prophecy in the eighteenth century. In particular, the thesis advocates for the continued exploration of "emic" approaches to these figures, a process started by members of Oxford's Prophecy Project. The thesis thus argues that "prophecy", rather than "millenarianism," is the most appropriate way of characterising these authors' scriptural engagement, and explores how prophecy is understood in their writings to delineate commonalities in their understanding of the prophet's role. Finally, it surveys how Revelation is interpreted within the respective works of the writers who are the focus of this thesis. The conclusion offers a hermeneutical reflection on the relationship between the prophetic interpreter and the texts they engage with. It suggests that the reader who claims to be "inspired" faces a tension between offering an interpretation of the authoritative text, and claiming an equivalent level of authority for their own works. The thesis makes three contributions to existing scholarly debates. Firstly, it demonstrates that attention to these three authors' interpretations of Revelation shows how attention to neglected voices illuminates the history of interpretation of this biblical book. Secondly, it justifies comparing these three authors under the framework of "prophecy", rather than the anachronistic terminology of "millenarianism." Thirdly, it explores their readings of Revelation to shed light on how interpretation of a scriptural text such as Revelation is key to the evolution of prophetic vocation; how Revelation’s images are developed and transformed in their own prophetic texts; and finally, their sensitivity to hermeneutical questions raised by Revelation’s relationship to other biblical texts and the problems posed by its eschatology.
